Yeah I love it. It's definitely the most exciting/thrilling MMORPG I've ever played. I can't wait to play GW2 and TERA on release. Both preordered yeah yeahhh |

Are they still following this plan? This seems awesome with tons of great player-generated content with capturable cities and bases. |

Gah, I'm the biggest MMO game hopper ever, and I've played them all (SEED anyone?, Ryzom, everything). i can't stay with a game more than a few weeks, but I've been playing TERA beta since CBT1 and I really think it has hooked me for the first time in a persistent way. OBT is even more difficult and fast-paced than I remember, and it's invigorating picking up the new slayer playstyle as opposed to my archer. And the game just gets more intense and exciting as you play even farther (highest level was 30). The game atmosphere is just so gorgeous and vibrant. The way you characters move makes them seem truly alive and badass when they are taking an enemy three times their size. This game is great and doesn't get boring even after weeks of not playing. If the company can keep coming up with new content, I think they have a long-lasting classic on their hands.
I pre-purchased GW2 as well because I plan on playing both (I know, your mind is blown). No reason not to have one p2p game and one f2p game, especially when they really are very different. Not sure about D3...not too happy about the auction house thing and it just doesn't seem very fresh.
I urge everyone to at least try this game during Open Beta weekend. Most of you--I'm sure--won't regret it.
P.S. play your favorite exercise/techno/pop music while you play. Linkin Park + TERA = AMAZING. |

Why so much hate? I feel like this game has potential.

Originally posted by evilastro Yeah this is just not really true at all. The action combat in TERA is different. it's in an expansive unzoned world and is made for larger battles (not massive yet, but wait a year or two). The animations lack the flash of Vindictus or C9 because those are single-player games with online modes (basically). RaiderZ has impressive potential but it's combat is clunky (broken collision) and an almost direct copy of TERA. Look at the 2H greatsword's animations in comparison with TERA. But it's not made for a large world. I would say it's closest in comparison to TERA for what it's trying to achieve, but just a little worse as of now. Also, the dodging mechanics lack variation and are insubstantial.
But overall, the polish on TERA just speaks volumes of how much quality the developers are going to put into it down the road. I mean look at the physics on the clothes, the hair, the detail of the armor that looks like it's actually worn and not painted on. The aesthetic effort is conveyed through every aspect of this game and makes it truly a piece of art. Not to mention the optimization and fun value of the game. The BAMs feel dangerous and nothing in Vindictus, C9, or RaiderZ ever made me feel in danger. The ambience of those world's just isn't there. Maybe if you don't have a keen eye for quality or the immersiveness of games like EQ and Lineage 2 and Asheron's Call. All are from different eras and calibers of graphics, but all captured a world complete within itself. No other game coming out can touch that right now. Even GW2 is heavily zoned and feels very much like a game and less like a world. Just my .02. |

What the heck, I can't enjoy other games after TERA.
General Discussion « TERA 4/01/12 3:57:44 AM
I don't get it at all. Tera doesn't have the most awesome featurelist out of MMOs coming out, but after playing four CBT events, nothing else seems to compare. I recently tried RaiderZ and Dragon Nest (both frequently mentioned F2P comparisons), along with Path of Exile, and another mmo (in CBT with NDA). But I can't stand playing these games more than an hour before they bore me to tears. I can't seem to capture the same excitement I had playing TERA or same awe when looking around the world. I can't even imagine playing SWTOR anymore. The combat is just so lackluster, and I don't feel like I'm constantly fighting for my life. I can't describe the feeling I had when I took down my first basilisk and barely backstepped out of the way as he charged me. It was crazy exciting. Fun is an understatement. Now, I'm wary that TERA may be ONLY combat, which sucks because eventually I do get tired of playing. After several hours, my hands feel worn and I feel drained. But then if I play any other MMORPGs, they just aren't satisfying viscerally. It's an awkward place to be. I hope they add more to the crafting system and add some fluff features like fishing etc.
BTW: This is not an April Fools Troll. |

Honestly, I am going to play Tera and I'm going to play GW2 (because it's B2P only) but GW2 graphics suck. The characters look like Barbie and Ken doll, and the spell animations look pretty crappy/last-gen. I also have to say that not everything in TERA looks great, but when I fight, the weight and gravity of my movements is way different than when i play GW2. My sword seems heavy and then it leaves cracks in the ground. I think aesthetically, TERA is in a league of its own. |

General Discussion « TERA 2/26/12 6:04:36 PM
Games are about having fun. And TERA is really, really fun. Who cares what features it has or doesn't have?!? GAMES like MORTAL ONLINE and DARKFALL with all those features and more lack in one key feature: FUN. Games should be fun, not spreadsheets (EvE). I'm glad the new batch, GW2, TERA, and TSW (maybe, but tbh it doesn't look fun at all, just interesting), is focusing on fun rather than bad ways to innovate. I've played every MMO since AC1 and I can't even remember ever being this hooked. The ambience of the world, the animations, the sheer variety in playstyles. The world might be static with repetitive quests, but the way you interact with the world is constantly changing whether it is PVP or PVE. Every time i take down a creature as an archer there are a ton of different strategies I could use. I can kite, slow, AoE stun and then charge up, or just charge up twice and let loose. PVP forces you to think on the fly and choose the skills that will best exploit your foe's weaknesses. I was questing near Lumbertown when a player from the guild we were at war with descended on me in his slayer fury. Already vulnerable from my fights I threw down a backshot arrow, exploding backward, and then proceeded to draw 20 mobs in the hopes they would get between me and him. In the confusion, he charged me, hit me a few times and then as I lay wounded, I pulled out a slow on him, then backpedaled in the direction of the mobs. He slash comboed, flying through the air but also hitting the mobs and drawing their aggro. We kept fighting this way, exchanging aggro, until eventually I got the upperhand and finished him with a charge shot. It was exciting and different, as we charged, jumped and ran across the map. I'm sure I won't have another fight exactly like it.
I've played/subbed to SWTOR, DF, AO, AOC, FFXI, L2, Ryzom, WoW, GW, and basically every other major mmo on the market including niche ones like RYL and Earthrise. TERA is the most fun I've had. It just feels completely different. Sure, it has similar features as other MMOs, but the experience is a breath of fresh air. It's like going from one country to another on a different continent. The people live similarly, eat 3 meals a day, speak the same language, and they have jobs. But the experience, the culture, and the environment is vastly different. Not everyone will like TERA just as not everyone likes traveling to specific countries, but I can almost guarantee this game wil not be short of subs despite competition. The dedicated company helps too.
tl;dr Don't focus on the feature list. Focus on having fun. If you have fun, buy it and don't worry about what anyone else says. This should go for any game. Remember any feature can be implemented poorly (EvE, DF, MO). |

You know it may be down due to a large amount of unanticipated preorders. I'm sure they were aware of the internet keys they were distributing to sites, but perhaps just a couple/several thousand more people than expected preordered the game and got the digital code as well. I don't know. That seems very optimistic to me, but it's not like the server hasn't had players on it before, even if they were much fewer. |

Originally posted by Kyleran LOL that's hilarious. I have to say, I have played every major F2P and P2P mmorpg out there and I keep coming back to this game. There is just so much to do and everything is built around being fun rather than a grind. You can really do whatever u want, and make money/gains levels/progress however you want doing it. Definitely my favorite sandbox. I wish they would modernize the graphics a bit. I can't really play this around my dorm because, to be honest, it does look a bit childish. |

I'm not saying it's good. That's because good is arbitrary and heavily based on the stipulations enforced by this forum of MMORPG sandbox fanboys. I have been waiting for a good nonlinear sandbox massively multiplayer game for years, and going into DCUO with that mindset will ruin the game for you. I tried the game during beta and was immediately turned off by the fact the game had no crafting, no housing, and seemingly retarded social features. I played it again this week and--having to pull myself away to work on some CS--realize that this game is unique in the genre for its fast-paced action and integrated story line. Yes, it is more like a console game superhero game except that it is online, has a massively multiplayer player versus player edge and has all the associated flaws of blending console with online. But it's still fun. And fun is really all that matters. Why do we play games? We play them because they are an escape from reality (fantasy life simulator Skyrim and Oblivion don't get me started ---> waiting for a better computer) but also because they are fun! Do you remember that word: "fun?" What does that mean, fun? Well for me it means that I am pulled into the game, immersed in the story and gameplay. I feel exhilarated when I'm able to execute a correct combo on a boss and save my team, earning myself the highest damage output in an instance. I am exhilarated when I can create forcefields around them to protect them from damage just as they are on the brink of death. I am excited when I learn a new piece of the backstory and see comic book rendered movies about Raven or Trigon or Doctor Fate, enemies that I have faced and now can come to know. But mostly, I feel thrilled, frightened, and slightly scared, when I am facing real player enemies anywhere in the game world at any time and we both know that neither can live while the other one stands. So why is this fun( for me at least):
So, while yes, I cannot virtually cut corn or roll dough and bake bread, DCUO is fun and that is perhaps more important to my enjoyment than the realistic scope of a game based on Super Heroes. The content is short, sure, but there is always room for expansion. The biggest complaint about this game was content. Well, the game is free now and worth it. I'm even considering buying the DLC, to support the devs and get more enjoyment. You should check it out.

IYO, what are the 10 best F2P/Freemium games available
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/12/11 8:20:35 AM
The Saga of Ryzom. With it's complex classless system, live events, unique factions that actually influence the world and your gameplay (how much things cost and what missions you can or cannot take + what lore your are given about the world), it is exactly what I had been searching for. However, due to its lower playerbase before I never enjoyed it. Fortunately, there is a thriving new playerbase now due to its release on Linux and Mac as well as Windows. Check my overview out at: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/325183/Need-a-Sandbox-Game-to-Pass-the-Time-Check-out-Ryzom-WinMacLinux.html |
