So wrong. Its so easy to make combat different from classical perspective. Just make mobs have their own squads, that way your single squad will not be enough to "solo". Just consider your squad as 1 entity, you still have to group to kill off elite or super tough enemy squads while having a completely different (possibly very dynamic AND tactical/strategic) combat game play.

Just because everyone gets a minion(s), it doesn't mean that you can solo all the way to game over.

The concept of Gods and Heroes to classical MMORPG concept is like Dark crusade vs starcraft. If someone doesnt know what Dark Crusade is, its a cool strategy game where your single unit actually consists of several unit soldiers. Get my point?

Dont have much to go with, but from the info you provided, id recommend EQ2, SoR, Eve, VSOH. Eve is the most complex out of those.

For a long time I logged into VG just to look at the scenery, the world (at high details) is extremely beautiful. I hope future games will follow VG in terms of graphics quality, but without as much lag. I took many many screenshots from VG at high res and high details and use those screenies as wallpaper. Often people unfamiliar with computers ask me who painted that painting and then I had to go into lengthy details explaining them that thats no painting, its an actually screenshot from a 3d gameworld.

With a blanket "not in the spirit of the game" line?  Sorry, I tend to think beyond such cliches and black/white assessments of morality.  The fact that hundreds of millions of dollars is spent in the secondary market every single year further proves that I am not even remotely close to alone in my opinion.

Ill summarize your many words with a few words... BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. Totally meaningless facts.

Yes, gold selling lets someone earn some money.
Yes, there are millions of dollars spent on secondary market.
Yes most people leave the game where gold selling is rampant.

Out of those 3 facts, pick one which influences MMO games the most and in what way (bad or good).

If you might also include your specs it would help as well.

Some of my Screenies (click on each to bring it up to 1280x1024 - the resolution I play VSoH and all my games)

Specs:

Intel DualCore 6300

BFG Nvidia 8800GTX

2 gigs dual channel RAM

6-7 hard drives (over 2 terrabytes of data) for movies and games

These screenies and many others u can find here:

Why make a similar MMOrpg if the current one is still cashing in a big $$$? The only reason to create something new is if a) old one isnt making money b) old one is getting obsolete, new one will upgrade, improve old one and will take over cashing in big $$$.

My guess is, if Blizz is making a MMO, it would be a different type of MMO.Maybe a MMORTS or MMOFPS in starcraft world. Or, at the most, it would be a scifi MMORPG. I doubt Bliz would voluntarily create something that will directly compete with WoW.

Im overgeneralizing here but hardcore games (that require a lot of time investment in order to progress in game) tend to have stronger communities. Games like EQ1 or Eve have really strong and stable guilds, if you are looking strictly for the social factor. Light games like WoW arent known for strong communities, people tend to 'tire" out of those games quickly and leave the community. Its best to join a hardcore game and hardcore guild, but it would require a big time investment and great dedication from your part.

I hope you find your game and friends. Good luck.

They screwed up SWG, but that was with LucasArts approval so don't ever forget that.

They fixed EQ1 before Brad tanked it. I will admit they drove it a bit to far with so many expansions.

EQ2 had a ruff start, but turned into a fantastic game.

Planetside is doing better and continues to grow.

Matrix Online sucks due to concept.. come on.. that concept is just.. dumb.. movies are "Ok", but a game? No thanks. Not SOEs fault.

Vanguard is doing much better then before and they are improving it at a hugely rapid rate.

You people act like they are the freaken plague. Your under-educated brains can't comprehend the differense between. PUBLISHER and DEVELOPER. They have absolutely NO SAY in the final product. You need to understand this. They're a good company, but to many idiots screwed up their good name. Not them. Your half-arse assumptions is what screwed it. Now you spread your stupid lies accross the web and cause discontent in others.

Anyway.. whatever.. I planned to try it weither SOEs name was on it or not.. i'm not that shallow

How do you know that? We've heard before stuff like that and its not uncommon for big corps to say that and have secret negotiations with SOE managers for a sale or merger. After Vanguard, I wont believe anything they say. Not saying this is true or not, but I don't have absolute belief in what corps say anymore.

Yeah, well forums like this also have ratings which ranks games like CoH and DaoC over WoW, even though their subscriber base is a fly compared to WoW, so that right there tells you not to take forums seriously when it comes to predicting a games popularity.
Well, just because something is rated higher then something else means it has to be more popular...Forums are a great way of getting predictions as many people express their opinions freely it's a great way to see what people currently think about the game, although it isn't all that reliable because a games success is usually based on how it launches.
Well, forums aren't the BEST ways to get opinions about something specific, especially if those forums are specifically geared to a certain game (fan sites, official game forums, etc). Its like asking for opinions about pepsi from coca cola employees, of course the answers will be very opinionated and not accurate at all. Best way to know if the product is good or not is its subscription base (paying customers).
Since WoW has the largest paying player base, I doubt it will have any downfall any time sooner then 20-30 years. WoW's ingenuity is in its simplicity - any1 can start playing and having fun from level 1. And its casualness covers a huge circle of people - no 5 hour sitting LFGing or endless grinding of low level critters because your class cant solo all that well.

As its current player base ages and moves on to other games, the growing population will join in and start their own journey into the world of MMOs. Its a win-win situation.

That’s cool for the first time around, but what happens to all the alt junkies out there? Might be beyond repetitive for them. Then again, this is all hearsay because many of AoC’s systems are still in development.

Your alts dont HAVE to go through single player campaign, you can skip it if you want. Not sure if u can skip it if u r playing your first character though.

And WAR will be very short lived because WARHAMMER 40K (which many thought WAR was in the first place) will tower over WAR. Who wants an imitation when the real thing is around the corner?

I doubt it. Correct me if Im wrong, but Warhammer40K is a completely different type of game. RTS is not RPG, cant realy compete with each other.

Hey guys, just looking for a bit more advice. After looking this up, I'm curious to know what you think.

I've seen many forums about 1 GB RAM vs 2. They were all so mixed up in opinion, I couldn't figure out a final answer towards my question. I suppose there really isn't one, but I'd appreciate a more clear idea.
I'm looking to invest in a new computer, since the one I have is a good 5-6 years old. It can't even run the free MMOs smothly. I get something ridiculous like 5-15FPS, if I'm lucky. (Based on Hero Online, it's pretty choppy gameplay)

My friend advised going with 2GB, but that does add up in cost, so I wondered how I would fair with 1GB? The minimum on some of these games says 512 to 2GB recommended. If you saw my first question, then you know already that I'm going for WoW or EQ2. It seems WoW uses a lot of RAM, but the issues for EQ2 are greater from what I have read. Some places I came across claimed that they had slow gameplay with 2 GBs, while other sites claim that 1GB and a good graphics card can run it well.

The specs I'm going for :
  • – Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 641 w/ HT Technology, 3.2GHz
I suggest upping this CPU to dual cores, they are really cheap nowadays.
  • – 1GB DDR2-667MHz SDRAM (2x512)
1 GB is OK, 2GB is better, anything above 2GB for WinXP is not necessary. 2GB in most situations is more then enough.
  • nVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS 256MB
Dont get GS. Pay a bit extra but get 7600GT. Why? Becuase GS is DDR2, and GT is DDR3. Anything above 7600GS is DDR3 so I highly recommend paying a bit extra to get from DDR2 to DDR3. The faster the memory on your vidcard, the more FPS u will have
  • – 160GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
Good HDD. Theres not that many things that will test your HDD on max performance. However, keep in mind that SATA2 is already on market, so if money is not an issue, u can get SATA2 HDD instead (faster transfer rates).
So, I'd really love some opinions on this ^.^

PS: Make sure u get a decent MOBO and PSU. Try to buy mobo while keeping in mind that u might upgrade your PC in 2-3 years (SLI, RAM slots, etc).

GE is generally following Asian MMO model - little variety in terms of content , which means theres lots of grinding involved. Pretty graphics and great music adds some charm to it, but I doubt anyone is playing an MMO for the sake of graphics or music alone. Gameplay is very limited and linear. GE may be popular in the East (I dont have the numbers so I say may be) but I highly doubt it will break any record in NA. If anything, it will be a niche game with Vanguard population levels (10-20K pop max) after release pop spike.

I don't think that's fair. There is nice game in Granado Espada too, but maybe it's not that well design, but still pretty good try. They just need to change and fix a few small stuff and game could be great.

Exactly what I meant (judging from your follow up posts, you agree as well) there is a nice feel to GE (nice graphics, fluid combat), but once u spend several hours/days in it, there isnt really much else to do there. MMOs biggest advantages over other genres (IMO) are community and immersion. Community is how one player interacts with other players: form groups, raids, guilds. Immersion is a much wider issue: it includes quests, trade skills, PvP, housing, character customization and many other things. This is where GE is lacking.

GE seems to follow (in general) the asian MMO model - fast action but limited alternatives. In human terms - lots of painful grinding with single goal - leveling your toon. I don't doubt that this may work for some, hence I never said it was a bad game per say, just that it does not provide enough alternatives for various styles of play. I could never understand how someone could spend countless hours doing the same thing, following the same routine hour after hour. I cant do that even if im getting paid to do it. But that could be just me, I suppose.
