The Secret World: Pre-Orders & Beta Weekends
News Discussion « General Discussion 4/04/12 3:32:06 AM
Originally posted by Xasapis I'd much rather the DAoC model (GW2). AoC was a bust for PvP people could just run away by 'channel hopping'. I guess semantically you are right. Leaving semantics aside the whole architecture was just unsuitable for 'open world' pvp. It is meaninless when every one is in different instances of that open world. |

The Secret World: Pre-Orders & Beta Weekends
News Discussion « General Discussion 4/04/12 3:21:15 AM
Originally posted by Xasapis TSW has open world nothing. It is an instanced (chanelled) game throughout. It will be intresting if they can offer even medium scale battles, unless they made some radical changes to the engine since AoC it seems unlikely. |

I'd like a key too!

Most advances in human development have been basterdisations. Games are no different. I guess you wont be playing GW2 with it's active dogding and blocking and active (albeit 'soft') aiming will not be a game you play, a shame. As for the idea that anyting one does not personally enjoy just should not be developed thats bullcrap too. I don't like period dramas but don't campaign to have them banned. Some while ago someone bsaterdised SiFi and period and came up with 'steampunk' again a genre I also dont particulary enjoy, does it bother me that others enjoy it? In a word, no. |

Originally posted by Boatsmate The obvious answer that has been mentioned is there are no 'healers' per se. The less obvious one is that a lot of the heals are ground effects so it is up to the person needing the heal to move into it. Seems like there are a couple more skills than will comfortably fit on a gamepad, 8 would have been ideal. |

Originally posted by Lord.Bachus Quite so. Probablly on balance I prefered DAoC to AC(Darktide) probablly the best open world MMORPG. OP It will be intresting if thow the 'esport' crowd take to it. I guess the GW1 ladder guys will try that side of things that seems obvious. What will be more intresting if the LoL, DoTA, HoN huys give it a bash. I suspect quite a few will. |

Can we just be honest with ourselves and others about paying for advantages?

League of Legends (the largest multiplayer online game on the planet) has a cash shop that to me seems aceptable, (I don't really play myself cause Im crap, but my son does). By your rather strict definition it is 'pay 2 win' as you can buy character unlocks, not many would agree however. So LoL OK - but most Nexon/Frogster/Gpotato are clearly not OK. |

Well I have a behind the scenes question but it concerns technology rather than people. Why oh why does the 'enhanced' editor disable my browsers spell checker. Sure it has some nice features but it's also somewhat clunky (having to manulay tag links, pasting text includes formating and tags), anyway I'd give it all up for my browsers spell checker to function. |

I heard that when you play Guild Wars 2, you spend real time doing so. Can you believe that ArenaNet is making us spend our TIME to play their game?

Originally posted by Kakkzooka Nothing to worry about if you use the cash shop you can win without even playing! It's going to re define 'playing' games.....literaly. |

Nice to get some written articles. Whilst youtube has its place I'm getting kind burnt out on vids. I guess high res screens are so last year too. I did find a couple that would seem to squash the 'graphics are crap' argument. Oh I remember seeing a couple of vids of the encounter he talks about (seperating the mobs). The yogs where really struggling with it. |

PlanetSide 2: Alpha Game Play Footage Released

Originally posted by Khealler Dunno tbh. Even in this early (and brief) video they said they wanted a level playing field for players. Of course that may or may not turn out to be true. I'm sure with a bit of ingenuity they will come up with something. |

Realm of the Mad God: The Official RotMG Review
News Discussion « General Discussion 3/30/12 2:33:55 PM
Good review captures the essece of the game (which is pretty straightforward tbh). The problem (as highlighted) is the lag spikes. Randomly dieing to lag spikes with a permadeath system is simply game breaking. Of course it dosent matter too much with a character you only have a few hours invested in but there is a sort of 'end game' that involved farming for gear and stat potions. Also if you are modestly geared a half a second spike can get you killed. Of course it is not a game to be taken too seriously and loosing a character due to your own cock up is half the fun. Still when it is taken from you randomly it smarts a bit, and makes it rather pointless. Still I had a lot of fun playing with my son this week. |

Looks like NCsoft explained the European CE pricing
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 3/30/12 7:00:32 AM
Originally posted by Leethe Currency prices have always fluctuated. Multinationals have direct access to the currency markets and have muti denominational funds that they can switch around. They also have access to things like derivatives to buy protection from fluctuations, sure there will be a small premium to pay but it is pretty negligible. |

Any worhwhile persuit is it's own reward. Of course some unfortunate people are forced to persue not so worthwhile activities to house and feed their families. Why they would want to join the same rat race (aptly named) in their games is completely beyond me. The grind for gear that EQ introduced and WoW personified + 'P2W' that was kind of stolen from collectable card games is a real minority thing. Most games do not reward time (you don't get extra pawns for winning in chess, or more trumps in cards). Same is true on the pay to win side even with sports having the best gear is a negligible advantage. My grandfather was a keen golfer he used to carry a single wood, 3 irons and a putter (he could dispense with any one of those at a pinch) and still beat another scratch golfer 9 out of 10 times. EQ (which did not even bother to hide the grind 'camping' for gear) and WoW (which perfected the art of keeping the hamsters running in the wheel) have addled peoples minds and gave rise to 'elitist jerkism'. Of course one has to wonder what the player (not character) skill cap is like on GW2 but that is a different matter. |

So can we call Guild Wars 2 the ultimate Care Bear MMO?
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 3/30/12 2:41:26 AM
Originally posted by Monorojo You know carebear is a word to describe a player that avoids PvP combat, right? It is also a derogatory term (hence the snippy replies). By definition if you avoid PvP you are a carebear. Of course one can use the 'it means something else to me argument' then one would be an arse (I am using the definition of arse as 'someone who uses an alternative vocabulary') If you had bothered putting your point a litlle bit more eloquently I think I might have shared your concerns. Instead you went for the 'lets insult people' approach which of course generates far more 'you tosspot' type responses rather than any meaningful debate. There are intresting things to discuss here for example what happens when a player (not a character) reaches skill cap, can you incentivise as well with horizontal progression as with vertical etc. Sadly your OP did nothing to get the conversation going down those lines. A missed opportunity, does MMORPG have any signal amongst the noise nowadays? |
