I already feel investing in this game was a swing and a miss enough. I guess I really love space sims and it blinded me to the reality of the situation - that this is a disappointment based on the way I play in various ways. Not everyone reads forums, pays attention to the main website.

How exactly is someone supposed to know something floating in space is considered stolen? If anything there should be a claim system in place - it should then be investigated as to how the person got it. To eliminate illegal activities.

I bought the game and after the decision to not offer refunds with offline mode scrapped - which I might add would have all but eliminated the to negative PR. I already had a bad taste in my mouth. Makes me think they spent more money than they could refund.

Stupid rules like this only cement my choice never to play as the correct one. Investing in Kickstarter titles is always a gamble anyway, you win some and you lose some. I learned my lesson about crowd-funded space sims and won't be making the same mistake with Star Citizen. I got my free ship from an AMD card purchase and will not be spending 1$ on the game until launch comes.

Spending tons of money of pretend ships. Toward a game that still has a long way to go in development and may not even come out. Is right up there with buying magic beans in my opinion. But it does show fans of space sims are rich. Hey people should spend their money on whatever they want. I won't be joining them in their quest to spend a ton of money on Pixels.

Man it sure is easy to make excuses not to play.

Certainly a lot easier than actually learning about the game.

It sure is easy to make excuses not to do anything.

Being bitter about their approach towards the refund process? Is in fact, based on reality I'm afraid.  I learned that completely not an excuse.

I played the beta for months. While it was ok. It also played like Euro Truck Simulator in space and I did not think the combat made things interesting enough.  That is also not an excuse, but the reality of the situation as it appeals to me.

The game has potential do not get me wrong. I  just do not think that potential has been realized yet.

Even if I am wrong about the loot system, misinformed or half right. It does not change the problems (my problems at least) above.

But you have a solid point. Big fan of your posts in general.

Well I think this game, rather than being a fantasy MMO is actually more of a true Simulation MMO.   And simulations generally  have hard rules.   The fun in sims is learning to master the rules and systems.   This game is designed to feel like you own your own space freight business, or whatever,  its not just a cowboys in space type of game.   Same as EvE, in that it is a harsh world with rules that need to be obeyed or you pay the price.

But it seems many people just want games where they can do whatever the #$%^ they want.

To each their own.   I have to admit I was not highly excited about this game either, but I enjoyed the review and how he brought out the little points that actually really add a lot to the game, and that would go unnoticed  were you just watching a video or reading about the game.  He kinda of sparked my interest again.   And I do love the graphics.

I look forward to further reviews by this player.

PS:  yes the whole solo game thing was a bad mistake unfortunately.   But I think this is just a good example of lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater.  The potential for a good space game is here.

The game has solo play, you select the way you want to play each time you login, you can even jump from solo to open play whenever you want. It was offline play that was cut off.

I would love to play a Dune MMO. Maybe something Bioware could pull off in the future?

It will be the same as any other game community. Immature and mature players playing together the same game.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I have a normal video card, nvidia gtx 460 (~200$) and I have 60 fps on ultra (40-50 in crowded dalaran).

My hype level for this game just suffered a bump due to this extra feature.

Lightsabers depicted in the first two released films, A New Hope and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, had blades that were colored either blue (for the Jedi) or red (for the Sith). In Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the JediLuke Skywalker's newly-constructed lightsaber was colored blue during the initial editing of the film, and appears so in both an early movie trailer and the official theatrical posters, but it was ultimately colored green in order to better stand out against the blue sky of Tatooine in outdoor scenes. Green would later become another standard blade color for Jedi lightsabers in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Mace Windu's purple-bladed lightsaber, as first seen in Attack of the Clones, was a personal request from actor Samuel L. Jackson as a way to make his character stand out among other Jedi. [10] Jackson's favorite color is purple and he frequently requests the characters he plays to use an item of the color.[11]

A multitude of blade colors appear in the Expanded Universe and in other Star Wars products. The original Kenner figure of Luke Skywalker in his Tatooine costume from Star Warswas released with a yellow-bladed lightsaber. While no yellow-bladed lightsabers appear in the films, they have appeared in several computer games, such as Jedi KnightJedi Outcast, The Force Unleashed, and Jedi Academy. The Knights of the Old Republic video games further expand the number of colors, adding cyanviridianvioletsilver, andorange,[7] and The Force Unleashed video game adds blackgold, and pink in the Nintendo DS version. With the release of The Clone Wars film and series, a build-your-own lightsaber kit was released in toy stores, and included redblue and green shards that colorize the blade when turned on.

Multiple sources refer to a focusing crystal in the hilt as the source of the blade's color, mainly from the video game Star Wars Galaxies.[7]

300k subscribers is still leaps and heads more successful than the average MMO.. WAR is a decent game... If you like PVD (player vs door)... The PVE is a joke... The community is abysmal unless you open RVR all the time.. Scenarios well they can be fun if you bring friends but anymore its just people joining scenarios and then dropping to flip zones in the high end of the game so you cant even run them half the time.

300 k was back in December. The game is slightly above 100k now.

Power Supply burned? AoC's fault for sure. Damn you FunCom.

Game Mechanics are still a big pile of fail. Sure Sieges are nice for the 25% of leel 80s who can participate in them weekly. The other 75% of players can't because of siege blocking on most servers or that they are not in a guild which has a battlekeep because they are limited. You'll also note if you read about AOC that they haven't added even yet the battle towers, and there remains no guild alliance system, or ability to merc your way into a a siege so unless you are in the top 5-10% of guilds you dont siege.

The free trial has led to a modest influx of players coming back. Most are reporting better performance of the client which was achieved 6 months ago, and again the complaints are bank size too small, guild customization options are nil, npc sieges of battlekeeps or city centers, non-existent, looking for group channel non-existent, and dozens of other major features that have been requested since launch, not in game.

Oh yes DX10 is there, current build is pretty buggy but a year after launch it's "Beta" hope that doesn't spoil. The game is fun if you can find a good guild in PVP and you like the mindless FFA PVP that exists in AOC. There still is hardly any incentive to earn PVP points, no real additional abilities, and there sure as hell is no disincentive, which is leading the majority of those giving the 14 day free trial to not-sub. Hence the extension. Oh yeah if you want to run DX10 with any glory you need a GTX level card, no not the 9800GTX+ you need a GTX 275-285-290. Yeah dissapointing considering you can get 50-60 fps in DX9 with a 9800GTX+ only getting between 15-30 in DX10.

AOC dev team has little to show for the past year in terms of real feature adds to AOC, they invested considerable time in fixing performance and that doesn't really matter to the core base who plays on Vista anyway or who will be playing on Win7 with 4 gigs of ram it will run fine. It even runs fine on XP now, but the question is, why are not hundreds of thousands of players coming back to sub and flood servers, create the need for expansions? With DDR2 so dirt cheap It's too bad they didn't include a stick of it in the box instead of busting ass for 12 months since launch to improve performance.

Fundamentally AOC is still not ready for players to pay for. Give it another 6 months or a year, if it survives that long, it should have some major feature tweaks and investment in playability above and beyond bug squashing which seems like all they've really done with AOC since launch.

Just move on. Don't like it? Go play another game and stop bitching.

ok now this is a great idea, it all sounds real fun.

Ideas have never been Funcoms problem. Even Gaute had tons of them. It's the EXECUTION that is the problem. Lets see what happens.

I think Funcom keeps improving their execution and design on their latest patches, don't you agree? At least i think patch 1.05 was considered a success.

You have a source for that? People around here seem to want solid scientific proof. Otherwise it's just your opinion.

It's only my opinion. I'm too old to engage in that "solid evidence" talk nonsense trend.

Frankly I haven't seen any improvement in their execution. Patches still take ages to come to live and when they finally do, there's always tons of issues, most of them already known but not done anything about.

One thing they have improved significantly is communication, when they locked Erling Ellingsen in the basement and let Craig do the talking.

Some nice barb changes tbh. :)

Is there anything specific that catches you eye? I don't play one myself, but I often find them tough in some situations Vs, but they seem to run out of steam after a while haha.

I stopped playing my barb cause in pvp situations I was always faced with one of two options: either CC or DPS. not enough stam for both.

Demo is much better.

Hope these changes will revamp barb.

I like this. I'm not the most hard core of gamers, but FC is adding stuff faster than I can run through it.

I'm especially happy to hear about the added pvp content, but I have a question regarding that; Will the towers be a guild thing, or can any pug be able to get something from capturing one?

If I'm not mistaken, I heard someone talking about 6 vs 6 or 12 vs 12 pvp situations concerning those towers so definitely PUG's will be able to fight for them. Probably something similar to the small world objectives present in WoW.

I have no official "proof" concerning this information I'm posting though.

So what are you using for facts to calculate how big/small is the current AoC subscription numbers? Why do you say that no veterans will resubscribe?

House of Crom and Thoth-Amon’s Stronghold seem very promising to me. Anything that brings more content is a very welcomed plus.

The mini-pvp objectives in form of small capturing towers located in the border kingdoms is also interesting.

As the summer months, here in Norway, bring with them a short period of rest and recuperation for the development team, I wanted to take the opportunity with this month’s letter to both thank people for all their support this year, and to start to lift the veil on the changes for the next update cycle that we have only teased about so far!

Coming Back to Hyboria

Firstly, I want to say thank you to veteran players and returning players alike, who have been playing during this re-evaluation period.

While we, of course, still have work ahead of us and are doing our best to continue to refine and improve the game even further and add even more great new content, we are very pleased to see so many people enjoying the game, and continuing their adventures in Hyboria. It has been the culmination of lots of effort on behalf of the development team to get to the point where we could give people a good impression of what the game is and where we are taking it in the future.

Veteran Rewards Incoming

On the subject of veteran players, I can also confirm that we will be introducing new veteran rewards in the near future. As part of the next major update cycle, a new veteran reward system will be introduced that gives veteran players access to special vendors who will offer them a host of veteran benefits ranging from social status items to special items that will provide extra convenience items to veteran players. As an example of the latter, exp potions and similar bonuses, while not increasing the power of your characters, will provide veteran players with great time-saving rewards and options not available to new players. There should be something for everyone!

Guild Renown

Now we get to the good stuff!

We have talked for a little while now about the fact that guild gameplay would be a focus for the upcoming update cycle. Today, I wanted to give you the first look at what shape those changes are going to take. The main feature of this area in the update will be the addition of the new Guild Renown system.

So what is Guild Renown?

Guild Renown is a system whereby the actions of any individual player count towards their guild’s reputation. Collectively, guild members can level up their guild in three distinct categories to gain access to new guild rewards and bonuses. The system has two primary components, the Renown level, and also Renown rankings which place guilds against each other and measure your successes against those of other guilds on your server.

Let’s take a look at the Renown levels first, before moving on to the rankings. Renown levels act much like the levels for your character, i.e., as you accrue Renown points through your actions in game, you will in effect ‘level up’ your guild.

Almost every action in the game will earn some form of Renown points for your guild. There are three categories of Renown points that contribute to your overall Renown level:

* Valor points: Earned from PVE gameplay, killing mobs, doing quests, beating bosses and raids.
* Glory points: Earned from PVP activities like winning mini-games.
* Artisan points: Earned through crafting actions.

Your Renown level is a combination of all three of these totals, which allows you to level up your Renown level in any way you choose. You do not have to do all of the categories if you do not want to. It will be perfectly possible to try and level up your Renown level with any combination of the above actions.

This will add another dimension to your everyday gameplay, and even a short ten minute session will be contributing towards your guild’s Renown pool and put them closer to the next reward tier! For example, getting a team together for a dungeon run, or doing a raid will both have the extra benefit of contributing towards your Guild’s Renown level.

As your Renown level grows, you will earn new rewards for you and your guild and access new features for your guild cities, like new pet or mount vendors, and even another new building type for your city, among other amenities. Some of these new rewards will benefit every member directly, and some will be for the guild as a whole. You will get more details on the rewards themselves when the update goes to the test servers.

So that is the Renown level. What about the Renown ranking system I mentioned earlier?

Renown rankings are where the competitive element comes in. People like to claim bragging rights, and the Renown ranking system will allow players to see how their guild has compared to others both on the overall Renown earned and also in each individual category. You will be able to see which guild has accrued the most Valor, Glory, or Artisan points in any given period.

The rankings will reset after each ranking period (currently planned to be weekly, but that may be adjusted during testing), and everyone starts on equal footing.

One area we have considered here is that we don’t want to have players feel ‘forced’ into merging guilds to compete for ranking placement. Thus, we will be making the ranking calculations only count the top X contributions from members in the ranking period (the value of X to be determined during testing). So let’s say we decide the contributing cap will be 50, then the top 50 contributors within the guild will be the ones whose efforts are counted for ranking purposes, even if you have 100 members. Please note that we plan for all members to be able to contribute to the Renown level, so larger guilds may level up quicker, but they won’t necessarily do better in the rankings - they might - but it is important that success in the rankings is down to effort, not just due to overwhelming numbers. With this, we hope that even small and medium-sized guilds will be able to make appearances in the rankings.

Likewise, by having ranking for all three of the categories, we hope to able to give those guilds that choose to focus their gameplay a chance to shine. So, even if your guild focuses only on PVP, and might not gain enough Renown in the overall rankings, you will be able to push up the Glory leader-board, if you are truly successful at PVP.

With the rankings being reset regularly, we hope to avoid guilds being able to ‘bank’ and constantly top the rankings. These rankings should reflect your current status as a guild, and your current dedication to your chosen causes!

The rankings will confer status bonuses to the winning guild - mainly cosmetic items or bonuses for bragging rights. Gold, Silver, and Bronze positions, for example, will be visible in your character’s guild tag.

The rankings are not something we intend to be about bestowing extra power on the winning guilds - they are meant to be an additional part of the system that allows players to prove that their guild is up there with the best on the server, either in their chosen area of expertise, or in all areas!

In Closing

So there you have it, a little bit of insight into what is coming up in the near future for Age of Conan. Of course, there are also a couple of other significant additions coming in the next update cycle, namely new zones in the form of House of Crom and Thoth-Amon’s Stronghold, as well as new Tower-based PVP objectives in the Border Kingdoms, but those will be the subject for future letters!

I see 3 reasons for this:

1. Those honesty disappointed with the horrible game launch have finally moved on with their lives.

2. The game is actually good these days. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it's reasonably polished and without gaping content holes. I stayed through the rough times, so this actually feels like a sort of a reward for my loyalty [or stupidity, if you will].

3. Trolls have Darkfall to laugh at now, and that's a game delivering the 'haters' a lot more laughs than AoC ever could.

I completely agree with you. The sum up of those 3 points explain the trends on the forums. Though there's still the occasional die hard hater here and there.

I thought these forums served mainly as a medium to trash games, especially AoC. What's with the latest positive attitude I'm seeing in threads?

Has the world gone insane?

/sarcasm off

I think you guys should get a job. You're just pathetic.

The only thing preventing you from testing the game with your high level chars is spending 10 bucks?

Nops, don't come back.

Save some money and travel around the world before you die.
