As many posted... if there was any substance to DragonBall.. maybe it could be good... but there really isn't any, so, why?

Ok, I'm going to ask the most unholy of questions, so don't kill me, especially you Enigma, becuase I praise you in my quote *points to the left*

BUT

I play a 70 Mage in WoW, have played a mage for years now, and I've played EQ2 on and off as a side game.

Here's my issue: The reason I haven't stuck to it is because I can't find a similar class, that I enjoy.

I enjoy grouping and helping classes, but because of my dilemma of a low level, I need a pretty soloable class.

As a mage, I enjoy being a support, I cc, decurse, dps, etc.

So.. essentially I need a class that can be a decent support, but has enough solo abilities that I don't feel like a holy priest in WoW (Wand, wand, wand, wand, heal, repeat)

Any help would rock.

EDIT: Also, they won't let me resub, it says they have a system error when I try. *tear*

I dare to be different, and instead of flaming, or stating "The Saga of Ryzom" I will do what is intended, and actually discuss, so here I go. You're all welcome to join, whenever you like.

Personally I love modding, ever since the first day I sat down in Natural-Selection (a half-life 1 modification) I loved the idea of modding a game, NS took modding to a whole new level, it changed the mechanics, and even game-type, not just what things looked like.

So, how does this all pertain to MMOs? As was stated (without any full explanation, thoughts, or expansion) 'The Saga of Ryzom' did expand on this idea with their Ryzom Ring, and I was psyched about it, but sadly, it was not exactly what it could have been, and here's how I see it.

Yes, letting the player's create a scenario is great, yes, it is a step in the right direction, but they didn't do the RIGHT steps, they just jumped in a direction and hoped it would work. Player's want their creations to be open to the public, they want to create something amazing and let everyone know. They want to make it their own. For inspiration, I turn to the little sandboxes we call There, Second Life, and the like.

Looking at these 'life simulations' you can see that there is a large market of players who like to create content, and therefore mod the game. They create entire cities, from the clothing, to the buildings, to the advertisements. This is where we need MMO modding to head.

We know those people who whine for player cities, and the like, but it's never really a player city, it's always "you can put this model, this model, or this model." and I understand, it's not easy, but nothing worth doing ever is.

Now, I turn to 'Spore', Will Wrights latest and greatest, and I look at it. He has the idea right, nothing can be easily achieved with bulky models and texture files, we need algorithms. We need a complex editor that can translate your creations into complex algorithms that the game engine then translates into your own game models and creations. Seen Here. Everything you see in that video is a series of algorithms that are assembled to make the objects YOU want in your world.

Here, we see a simple solution, to a complex problem, and it's only one step of the way. But, if we look at the examples given, we can see the potential. Ryzom had the AI scripting to make interaction and NPCs in the cities work well, 'life simulation' games have the implementation of the player drive world, and with an algorithmic compression and model creator (therefore elimiating the use of outside software, which is a big plus) we can save bandwidth and memory because of the lack of having to load and tell to load a million files.

Those are just some of my thoughts on the subject, I have many more, but frankly, don't have the time to include them all.

Good article, and on most of your points, I agree very much :)

Just because I can, I have to agree with the people who are against it being free.

Nothing good has come from the so-called 'free' games (where you have to pay to keep up with other people... yeah...) and frankly, I don't see it helping Mythos either.

Who knows, maybe they will be just as retarded as Dungeon Runners: "Pay us for a Mythos account, and we will let you stack potions!!!!1!!11one" yeah... smart there... mmhmm...

You know, if no one wants to pay to play your MMO, don't bother. All these MMOs that came out pay, and went free, did it for one reason, their MMO was bad enough that not enough people would pay them to play it, so they were forced to gimp their game with alternate routes.

I don't see the draw in playing a game for free, when the guy who is forking out $100 can get as much, if not more, than I can, just because he has money. I work an entire month for what I have... he pays in a day. Great system, balance is amazing. GG

Give up with the free system, all you're doing is telling the public openly that your game sucks, and you know it.

Alright, time for another WoW player to lend some experience in the matter. What pappy13 said was mostly right, but there's fixes to most of the big issues, which people have gotten used to. That being said, before people saying 'I shouldn't have to adapt, the game should' look at any other MMO and their big changes they make... enough said. Every game does it, adapt, and move with it. Frankly, the changes made in WoW made it more friendly, not less.

Without further adue, here you go:

Yes, factions are more required than they used to. In fact, there is a new type of area called a 'sanctuary' (this opposed to alliance, horde, and disputed territories) and the new town where everyone (hored and alliance) hang out is one of them, it is called Shattrath. This new city is a sanctuary, which means no one can attack anyone (avoiding the nub ganking and exploitation of such towns as booty bay).

Within this town, there are 2 factions, which have their own areas. Each town has different reputation rewards, and while it is not a huge difference which you pick, if you do some research, you will find one usually will fit your playstyle best.

Before you whine about grinding rep, I offer this to help you understand how DIFFERENT rep is now, as opposed to the old rep system.

Remember the days of Eastern Plaguelands? Remember the billion stupid scourgestones you had to collect in order to gain a minute amount of rep (like 25 at a time, out of the 12k you needed to rep up)... that was rediculous. Well, now, the fixed it, in a great way.

There are many ways to gain rep while you level, and afterwards, and here's the general breakdown. Firstly, rep items drop a lot more, and you don't have to wear any stupid trinket to do it, there's fix #1. Next, rep items drop from almost all the late-game instances, and give you 250 turn in. Also, there are special 'uncommon' drops which you can get, that give you 350 rep each, and help quite a bit. On top of this, most instance quests you can recieve, you recieve through rep related towns, and they give you around 750+ rep for turn in (at 12k rep needed for a rep up, that's a lot of rep considering you get rep items while doing the quests). This way, it is less of a grind, and more of a 'this happened to happen while I was doing what I wanted' kind of thing.

Nextly, the raids. Lowering the raid cap was the best thing that ever happened to WoW. Everyone is whining about not being able to run with 40 people...but remember when you used to run with 40 people, your item would drop, and you would have to wait in line to get the item you wanted? Why the hell do you want to have to win favor over 40 people, instead of just 10? or 25? Seriously a messed up thought process you have there.

Also, they changed the way you gain your tier gear. Remember when you used to run MC, not have 1 pally with you, and then like 3 pally tier pieces would drop? Because I do. What the hell kind of fecked up system is that? Now, you get items that work for multiple classes (ie you get a helm drop, which can be used by mages, warlocks, priests, and then you turn that in to your rep leaders in shattrath, for the item you want; think Naxx). This way, there is always a use for the items that drop, and someone gets what they need more often. No more raiding 400 times to get your set.

The new zones have 4x as many quests as you need to level, which is a good thing. You feel more like you want to do quests after 70 for rewards, money, and rep, not that you HAVE to do these quests to level. Sure, you can power level yourself, but why? The game is supposed to be fun, live it, don't just grind it. The new zones are setup extremely well, accessible, and plentiful. A+

Here's my #1 favorite thing, and if you played any class that felt this way, you know what I mean. Remember when every priest HAD to be holy? or every druid HAD to be resto? Every paladin HAD to be holy? Every warrior HAD to be protect? etc. With the additions of the new talents, and abilities, every build is now a viable build. People actually request Balance druids, or shadow priests, or anything, because they are extremely helpful to the groups now, not just 'we're the other build, that you hate'. And that's the point of talents isn't it? For you to build your class any way you want, not how the 'group' wants.

There are many more examples of what Blizzard did right in this expansion, these are just some, but if you opened your mind and looked past the words, and actually think of what the changes MEAN, not just what they SAY, you'll understand WHY they were put in, and how they HELP us all.

If you want to know the truth, the people who get hacked normally get hacked for a reason.

Here's some helpful tips:

-Anyone that says "give me your WoW account info and i'll give you 100,000 gold... don't do it"
-Any software that promises to make you uber-leet, don't run it
-Stop downloading porn, where do you think they'll infect first? the biggest free market on the face of the earth. Get used to it.
-Stupid software like Bonsai Buddy -- Don't use it! 99% of all free software on the net is infected with more hacks and spyware, than anything.
-Don't download software from 3rd party sites, unless directed to by the company itself!!!

I guarantee you that many of the problems are rooting from simple problems such as these, and it's not so much the companies fault, as it is the ignorance of the public. I see more ignorance in every day life than I care to admit, and frankly, I'm glad that this is happening to these people. If you learn to use your brain, maybe you won't get scammed, cheated, or hacked. Unless you expressly download these things, they can't get on your computer, so stop getting things you don't need, and get a file scanner for gods sake.

Er..not to be a downer, but I have a friend who actually works for Lineage 2 here in the states and in casual conversation here's something he posted to me.....

" Yeah still working at L2. Same old same old. I am just waiting for Warhammer Online to go beta. Also hopefully in a few years from now Warhammer 40k MMO but THQ just started the project .. And God, hope it will be nothing like Tabula Rasa .."

I've sent him another message asking for clarification on his last comment about TR....

I think the biggest issue, and misconception people are having about TR is this:

TR is not a sci-fi shooter MMO. Sure, it has guns, it's sci-fi. If you read the lore, it has a lot of fantasyish background (coming from Lord British, what do you expect?) and it is not a shooter, it's an MMORPG, not an MMOFPS.

I find too many people are associating 'guns' with 'shooter' which is not the case. This is simply an MMORPG with a more advanced tactics system (cover, location, high ground, etc) and should be seen as one.

Just figured I would clarify as it seems to be a recurring problem.

I went through every WoW MPQ and couldn't even find an Expansion 2 folder, let alone any northrend_ pre-scripts.

Either way, Blizzard already announced they have a new project that isn't WoW related (which I think might be unveiled at Blizzcon this year, which would rock) so i'm sure that will take a lot of creative juices.

Also, they should already be (and probably have been) working on a new expansion, now that they know the potential of WoW expansions (biggest debut sale day ever people?)

I'm going to try my hardest not to resort to pure negatives against WoW in this... so bear with me.

World of Warcraft in its self... is just like every other MMO on the market. Its not bad, but its not great. As to why it caught on so big? I think it was a mix of hitting shelves at the right time and a decent company behind it.
WoW is easy. Seriously. It is pretty straight forward and has a very small learning curve. There are no intricate crafting blueprints, or weapon upgrade kits. The classes are straight forward as well. Every two levels you run over to the trainer and plop down a certain ammount of cash for your new skills.
The player community is.... ok at its best in my opinion. People will sometimes help you out when you need it, but alot of the time they just don't generally care about you. Its all about them unless you get into a good or at least decent guild.
Quests are generally repetative (but most MMOs have this anyways) and most quests feel like the one you just did with a different dialogue to get you started with.
Instancing in the game is used pretty darn well and used especially where it is needed. I congratulate them on that!
The world is expansive and full of things to explore.. however there is no place for someone who just generally likes to explore. you have to hit 60 first.. otherwise you can expect to be mauled (which is kinda expected) The graphics? They're alright i suppose. They are meant to go along with the warcraft theme and for that i commend them on keeping tradition to inspire new, however MMOs and communities nowa days are screaming for realistic trees and sparkling water.. =/

The MMO has its ups and its downs.. both equal to one another.
However, i think in its own.. WoW is missing something... something big enough to turn down people. Especially after a long period of subscription with them.. you just get bored and feel the need to walk away.

Agreed in many aspects. But you know, I had to go back, and here's why.

I am not some "old school" MMO player, I started playing MMOs back in 2000 with the Ryzom beta. After that time, I fell in love with MMOs.

Since then, I have played many MMOs, and the only one I have been able to truly stick with was WoW.

I love Anarchy Online, traditionally, I am a sci-fi gamer, and therefore it is great, but I found that with AO, and almost every other first generation MMO, the gameplay seems ultimately grindy. There is little to nothing more to offer, and it falls short for me. However, I did play AO longer than most, clocking in at 9 months.

After Ryzom, and most first gen MMOs, I hit the WoW train, and while I liked it, I never hit off too well. I always got mid 30s, and ended up leaving, because it felt like there was something missing, so after around my 5th level 30ish character, I quit.

I then went onto many other MMOs, trying out all the 'little guy' MMOs like FairyLand, Monster and Me, those stupid asian grind ones, everything. I then hit EQ2, which was great, but I found the same issue as I had with WoW.

Then, I found a group of people I liked, that played WoW, rolled on their server, and had the initiative to get to 60 in around a month. Up until BC, I played with them, and loved every minute. There's something great about jumping into WoW, running an instance with your buddies (not some hardcore 'we are elitest bastards' guild, your real friends) sitting on ventrilo, and just having a good time.

Around the Pre-BC PvP patch that screwed up WoW, I had a great time, everything was awesome. At the time of the patch, a lot of big guilds fell apart, because in Blizzard's infinite wisdom, they took guilds, and split them apart with their stupid PvP gear blitz that they almost forced the population to go on.

Up until last month, I had quit WoW, but after jumping between nearly a hundred MMOs, now that things have cooled down, WoW is fun again. Your same group of buddies is still there, you can still have a great time.

I think what most people expect wrong from WoW is that they want it to be more like first generation MMOs, they want nothing more than to grind their faces off. But if you look at how BC is setup, Blizzard is reducing the grind, and steering away from it. Reputation is now easier to get, it's not a years worth of grinding anymore. Items are easier. Raids aren't huge as hell now. Everything is slowly progressing to a playable state.

I don't see the point in bashing WoW all the time, frankly, you people who bash WoW all the time do it because you think it's the "cool" thing to do, and sadly, it just makes you sound like a moron.

No one bashes your game, why bash other peoples? Go play your 'inster derogatory bash here' game, and leave everyone else alone, seriously. You're all just a bunch of 'insert retarded name that makes me feel empowered by putting you down here'.

... they can't even spell correctly in their advertisement!!

That's right, MMORPG.com currently has an advertisement up for http://www.ijji.com/ and it says "Let Youar Shooting Do the Talking"

I just find it amusing that these "professional" companies that are buying the rights to distribute and publish all these new import and small-time games, can't spell correctly, code a decent website, or any of the like.

Call me old school, but last time I checked, in order to run a successful company, you required basic life skills, like proper grammar and spelling.

Just my rant of the night I suppose.

Guild Wars would be my only real suggestion with your criteria.

FFXI, now that I think of it, said they were implementing NPC players that you could have join you, since it was impossible to solo, or at least play without your friends.

Great work Karan, and it's nice to see another user who appreciates the power of Blender :)
