Love the work-around idea, I'll have to tell that to anyone who has similar issues.

I sell PS3's all the time now, since the price drop. Even though they're just blowing them out for the 80g models, it's still a HUGE seller now..

Anyways, to your question. The answer is yes, it will do a letterbox mode to fit to screen, or so I have seen. In our EB games, we have a 4:3 plasma screen on our display (apparently I have been told our displays are different than US displays; different regulations maybe?)... either way, we have a 4:3 monitor, and for the official demo game that is always in there, it does set a letterbox for playback. I am assuming it does the same for the home screen, but because it's black I really can't tell if that's just the positioning of the UI, or if it's a letterbox mode.

But yeah, my input still stands, at my EB games, our 4:3 monitor displays a letterbox for the games we are running in it. I have never had a bluray in the drive, so I don't know if it's the same for all discs, or if it's a per-item capability that has to be setup by the developer, on a per-product basis.

and again, love the work-around, ingenious :)

Here's my question... what are said pools for? =P

Pools for money? pools for playstyle? pools for sexual preference? I don't see the thought process here :P

In fact the psuedo FPS element really is just SWG: NGE in a nutshell. If memory serves, that idea was pretty soundly rejected by the MMO community and about killed the game (among other reasons included in the changes) SWG is enjoying a slight resurgence NOt because NGE has gotten better / improved but because they have changed alot of the mechanics BACK to the old way.
IMHO, TR is heading for trouble, not Auto Assault scale trouble or technical disaster scale trouble like Vanguard but acceptance trouble as they are promising something the game is not.
The problem in part as I see it with MMO's is this:
The SAME guys (and I wrote this before a few years ago) who started the genre are still making and controlling the developement of it. MMO development has not changed because the same people are making the same games with improved graphics. Where is all the fresh new talent? Where is the new next generation of designers? The old guard is still calling all the shots and that is one of the core issues with the genre. The same people are basically still controlling Turbine, SOE, NCSoft, Mythic. There is no influx of fresh new ideas.
Dinosaurs still rule our world.

Very interesting insight, and I definitely agree.

I think the problem is more with the 'risk vs reward' system involved with the investment side of things, that makes this happen.

If you look at it, and you'll read this everywhere: publishers rule our development. You could have the best game in the world, but if you don't have a publisher or funding, good luck to you. Which is where it all turns into one big cycle of doom.

'Risk VS Reward' tells us that the more risk we take, the more reward we could gain, but the less the chance of that happening. So, essentially, everyone is taking the 'safe' route, and investing in proved practices, and people who have been around forever, and may offer better insight.

Again, as you stated, the problem is the same ideas float around forever, and get reused, so we keep feeling like we're playing the same game.

BUT the biggest problem lies here:

There have been a bunch of insurgences of new companies, with new ideas, and new people, coming up. They have thought they could take the 'easy' route, and not get the 'old school' funding, and find private investors of their own, had to cut schedules short, and eventually... well, eventually we had games like 'Seed', 'The Saga of Ryzom', and many others, who had great ideas, but fell short because of lack of funding, so the need to press release dates was too harsh.

Now, i'm not saying similar things wouldn't have happened if they had been with some big investor that pushed schedules, but I'm just saying, this is our outcome.

Things are in a big cycle right now, and I really wish we could all fix it, but really, we just have to do what we know best: support the games that deserve it, don't buy the games that don't, and maybe they'll take our hints from now on.

We can only look to the future.

Tabula Rasa is a great game. Great.

Revolutionary though? Hell no. There is not one feature in that game that is 'amazing' in any way. Nor 'revolutionary'. The game is great fun, and greatly buggy. It's definitely a nice atmosphere, and setting... yet he speaks of respawns for no apparent reason... TR has that. He speaks of 'good AI'... I laugh uncontrollably at that one. TR's AI is no better than that of WoW, outside the instances.

It's just funny, because everything he speaks of, he speaks of like it's "The whole game should work like this, not like it does now" except his game works just like WoW. Things don't respawn in WoW for no reason... in an instance. Hey wait, neither does yours. It's like... hmm... could Richard Garriot be lying? Nah, lol.

Great game, but if he's going to say all this, at least make it true, before you spurt it all out Richard.

Link? Haven't heard anything about it, which isn't necessarily the best thing in the world for it's publicity...

however, who knows. Link would be great.

Matrix Online was developed by Warner Brothers, not SOE. It was bought by SOE for the sake of doing so, nothing more.

Vanguard was Sigil's failure, SOE is currently in the process of fixing it.

As for this, have to agree with most, it just seems like it would be a 'cool, i'll play this, but I really wouldn't spend money on it' kind of concept. It's neat, but it doesn't look like there will be much depth to it, which makes it not a long-lasting experience.

HELL YEAH! This game would sell as much as the Transformers games for the consoles sold... and I work at EB games. Want to know how many we sold? 3. That's right, 3.

Huge blockbuster in the making.

Well, yes, and no.

See, with WinXP, they said 'were getting rid of the old way of doing things, NT is the way to go, yo-ho we're microsoft, ladada. Still, they kept a mass of support for old software.

Now, they're all like 64-bit is the way to go, no support for you, eat it.

It's the same kind of attitude, except with XP they kept a way to run compatibility for older software, because they knew that some things just wouldn't get a fix. Now, they are basically shoving it on us, and then saying 'now that we've pretty much forced you to get this because of the need to run new software, know that EVERYTHING you had before this, is now obsolete. Have a nice day.'

How nice, huh?

I think you meant to say a 500gb HDD and 2.0gb of RAM.

Frankly, numbers mean nothing, it's clock speeds and types that matter, but I don't expect most people to understand how it all works.

Plain and simple, you could have 4x the memory I have, and I would still be running things better with my clock synching on all my hardware. It's worth a look into, if you really want to make your computer efficiently fast, and not just overly large.

Also, I don't understand all this 'vista only' push they're doing right now. Shadowrun is now Vista Only because of DX10 as well. I think Microsoft is expecting too many people to push to vista, too fast. They should first fix it up, before they expect us to jump on the bandwagon. They're like a half-finished MMO developer, except they're pretty much PUSHING us into using their half-finished software. Seems kind of like a moneygrab to me =/

Dance Online <-- There's your answer.

EDIT: I play with the Red Octane Ignition Pad's they mention on their site. Great pads, just pricey. But I play PS2 DDR with them as well.

Apples and Oranges. You decide.

You can't compare one genre to another, they draw different play styles, different people, and different gamelpay all together. Although, I don't care for Oblivion, I still like a lot of single player RPGs
