[mod edit] The largest sandbox game around is Minecraft.  It has the highest player base of any game ever.  People still buy the game and love it. On top of which, it's nearly as far removed from realistic as you can get (graphically).

EQNLandmark is (in time) going to remove minecraft from it's throne.  Assuming at some point the code is released and modding is allowed.  It has the potential to go far beyond anything else we've seen.  And it's free.

(and don't bring the SOE market place into it, if you knew anything about it, you wouldn't bring it up to begin with)

Only real reason I'm watching is because Smedley said that we would be starting Alpha testing second half of January.  I'm hoping they'll give a date on that, or at least some information.   The upcoming event on the 31st seems to state that we'll be playing before then as well.
I love how people say this is a great idea for gaming companies to pick up.  How it's the future plan for MMO's (being the sub for full game access).. But what company can really do this other than SOE?  99% of the MMO companies out there only have 1 game.  I could maybe see CCP doing this with EVE/Dust/Valkyrie/WoDO... And I guess Funcom with AoC and TSW, but that's pretty much it.

... WoW didn't do it better, that's the problem. Most of the games out haven't done it better.  Everquest when it first came out, before Luclin was a hard, challenging game that didn't baby people.  You want to take on a dragon? Fine by us, but if you die, be to lose everything as well as experience.

When WoW came out, they cloned everything from Everquest but the challenge. They copy/pasted spell and skill discriptions and effects.  There is a reason people dislike it.

While what they did is sad and pathetic as well as completely unorigionial, you cannot fault them for it.  They marketed well and pulled in the people because of how easy it was to get into and be good at.

But no games (with the possible exception of Star Citizen) are bringing a true challenge to the gamer.  They are affraid of peoples reactions to it. They are scared that people will quit or give their game a bad review if you can't get to to max level and be a bad ass in a days time.

You aren't very well informed I take it. They've stated they won't be doing any cross platforming which is good, being as the PS4 and Xbox One are both crap.

As for it releasing for Alpha? The January date is pushed back. They stated a 2013 release early on. It has nothing to do with any bad press.  EQ has always preformed well in both EQ and EQII.   They are the kings of the MMO genre.

You are correct about it not feeling like EQ though, being as it's not EQ and minecraft in the EQ universe in which there is little to no actual story.  This isn't EQNext of which very little is known as of yet, being as 90% of it will most likely change in some form or another before release.

Mmos take longer to cook than that, especially when they scrap half the work and go in a radical new direction.

And of course it will be on the ps4. If they're porting planetside 2 to the ps4, themes no reason they can't, and they will want to as its their console, will be something not on the xbox and it will bring in more money.

Honestly you guys thinking it won't be on ps4 are living in a fantasy land yourselves.

I think its going to be coming out shortly after the Aug reveal. SoE has kept EQN in a blackbox so no one can copy their ideas. I personally think the blackbox is useless if we get huge reveals in Aug and the release date is in 2014. My guess is we are also getting a release date in Aug and pre-orders will start then or soon after.

You are correct on this and honestly I believe this is why Blizzard pushed back it's "Titan" release date and they are scrapping it.  They are going to wait to see what EQNext has in it so that they can try to copy and add it's features into it's new game.  And while you might take that as an anti-blizzard statement... it's not, it's the Truth. Blizzard does this with every single game they have.  They take other peoples ideas and try to find a way to top them by throwing more money at it.

Its not anti-Blizzard as everyone does it in MMOs. Blizzard has done a better job at it then anyone.

I completely 100% disagree.  EQ1 came out and provided a very challenging gaming experience for the D&D community. A lot of people really loved it, however, there were others who just couldn't deal with it and ended up after a few years of crying and trying to get the game made into easy mode. Every game gets them. People who bitch and moan over the harder aspects of a game.  WoW, after researching EQ and it's development over the years, brings out it's own game taking all the best qualities of EQ (and the few failures that came out between) and provided it's Starcraft crowd with a far easier version of the game.  There was little to no originality to WoW.  They used warcraft inspired everything and put a new skin over it's dumbed down EQ clone.

Even some of the spells and skills in WoW were copy paste exact from EQ, discription and effect, I mean, come on. While I understand some things are going to be universal when it comes to these games.  WoW doesn't even try to hide the fact that it steals and cannot come up with an original idea.  I bet you money that when WoW's next MMO comes out, it'll be another clone of EQNext. Right here, right now, I'll be you $1000. It will most likely have some aspects of Elder Scrolls Online and SWTOR in it as well.

EQ1 didn't steal from any other MMO. Verant when creating EQ took ideas from D&D and created a world and story of its own.  EQ2 Came out with a Panda race in it's world a few years ago, and then, low and behold, WoW jumps on the copy/paste train and gets them too... People are sick of it. There's a reason WoW has nearly no player base anywhere other than China/Asia where you only have to pay $1 a month to play.  Not to hit on the fact that most of those people have 3 or 4 accounts

Replying in the order of your post...

- You are wrong on this.  First off, the lead Dev of EQNext said it's possible that it might come out 4th Quarter this year.  Secondly, they didn't  completely scrap the game.  EQNext was designed linear based originally. They scrapped that.  They already have the world, they already have the characters/classes and graphics.

It doesn't take 4 years for development if you already have story and a game engine, which, they do.  They are using EQ1 story seeing as this is a relaunch of EQ1, it's not EQ3.  And if you read any of the EQNext News (clearly you don't), you'll find they said that the game will be running and playable at SOE Live.   Shortly after which Alpha will start and so on.  This game will most likely launch before Elder Scrolls Online.

- No where has anyone at SOE said it will be on the PS4.  To assume such simply because of Planetside 2 is a bit silly.  If they do, and if they say so at SOE Live, then you can start saying that. Until then, it's just wild speculation from people who have no idea if it will or won't be.

Why everyone is so hyped? Simple answer is SOE with EQ and EQ2 is the only MMORPG company out there, that has put out MMO's that last.  EQ1 still runs today and has over 500k player base.  That's a 14 year old game.  EQ2 still has an even larger player base (last I checked) and that games is, what, 8 years old?  They are still making content for both games, they are still keeping payed subscribers.  Beyond WoW, which only has WoW, what other company has put out quality, lasting MMO's?

The EverQuest series of games have always been fun, challenging, and rich in content.  The raid events have been the hardest and require nearly perfect discipline for end game content. While you get a little of that in other games, by and large, most games offer little in comparison.

Games coming out now have little in the way of actual difficulty. The worlds all have care bear environments that have little to no punishment for death or failure.    Little to no actual challenge.  GW2 was easy, WoW was easy, SWTOR was easy, Neverwinter Online is easy. You have arrows pointing you in every direction, a map showing you the location of every quest item.  You don't have to think. You don't have to do anything other than run from A to B to A.  Hell, half the time it either insta turns in or you can teleport right back tot he npc or his general location.  None of these worlds even feel large because you can just teleport to nearly every location and you get some sort of movement speed boost for the rest of the trip.  Why? Because of all the Nancy's out there who cry about how its so hard to get from A to B otherwise......

This reply has run a  long lol, ending it here with this thought.  Do we really want another Care Bear Land MMO or do we want a game that lasts? SOE is 2 for 2 when it comes to EQ, chances are they're going to be 3 for 3.

While it looks like a fun game.... I fail to see how you can justify calling that a EQN clone.

We also know that it was said by game dev's that EQNext might launch this year. End of 4th Quarter.  EQ1 launched around Christmas if I remember right, as well.

But ya, StoryBricks, which is partering with SOE for EQNext is far more than NPC's remembering you.  It brings NPC's to life.  It gives them their own goals in the world, it causes them to have interactions with not only other players, but other NPC's.  For example, the guard you are speaking with might have just had his girlfriend break up with him, therefore as you speak to him, he'll be sad and might bring it up.  Or a kid might have lost his dog and be out searching for it and crying.  All of these are sort of randomly generated "events" that take place in each NPC's life.

As for what I'm not sure about when it comes to this.... Depending on how deeply they go into StoryBricks in EQNext, is how they are going to implement this with fully voiced NPC's.  I could see a way for it to work, however, I'm not sure our technology has advanced enough to make it cheap and effective (I could be wrong).  So most likely this will bring back Chat Bubbles and a chat box displaying what the NPC's are saying, and either a list of available reply options or maybe it will ask and give you a choice of replies and you type them in.  All of this removes Voiced NPC's however, and I think this might turn some people off who either never dealt with it before (young whipper snappers) or people who find it old and out of date.  I personally liked the text based/chat bubbles, brings a more retro feel and allows more freedom for things like StoryBricks, Fully Voiced NPC's are far to linear.

What I really want to know, however.... And this is a big one.  Will EQNext support the Oculus Rift.  I want to play this graphically stunning game in full VR. I want to be able to turn my head, lean around corners to take a peek down a hall or into a room.  I want to see the EQ particle effects swirling around me.  To feel like you are not playing your character, but you are your character.

Ahhh, the dream.

I think he was talking about SWTOR. They keep coming out with ALL new armor models that are so cool.. Turns out they are just old ones with a new paint job.... The people at SWTOR have no idea what starwars is.
but since they have introduced gambling via the cartel packs, your argument is wrong

My argument is wrong? It's a fact. Go look it up. And while the Cartel packs are a form of chance, buying something for a chance at getting a rare item. It isn't gambling.  You always get something in return for what you put in and you can give those items to anyone of your alts.

Gambling generally requires risk. You play something of value against someone else who places something of value and you win or lose.  Do I really need to go into more detail here?

let me get this straight,,you want to play a star wars mmo,,but you dont want kids to play it?

i guess they could make one, just for adults, but it would be VERY small,,and VERY cheap

a game of swtor size has to go for the biggest playerbase they can get

and it looks like they dont have enough

Or you could read what I said and not make random assumptions.  EA doesn't allow gambling in their games.  That's all was pointing out. We got a game that was going to allow gambling of sorts, playing cards and betting in game credits for it, but because of EA, we couldn't get it. That is total bs, and EA sucks big for it.  Who else finds it completely freaking asinine that it's ok for a game to have killing in it, Battlefield series, and it's ok.  Oh, there isn't any blood therefor it isn't to much.... Give me a freaking break...

You can play Battlefield and kill people, but they draw the line at gambling.  How the hell does that make any sense at all? There is a massive disconnect from reality on these ratings.

I'm not bashing on battlefield. I'm not bashing on SWTOR. I was answer his question on why there weren't certain games (pazaak) and such in SWTOR when Bioware had it in it's other starwars games.  And I simply brought up the retarded logic that these people use for their game ratings and what they think it so much for "impressionable young minds" to handle.

... this game would have a much better standing!

It´s actually a pretty decent game, clearly better than on release.

Imagine they would not have invested time into the space rails and rather announced a big space sim with the release, and show something of it!

A lot of "would have´s" but hopefully the game is on the right track now and they skim through the tons of suggestion.

Still needs Pazaak, swoop racing, space casino, improve the feeling of the lame ass speeders, giving more life to the planets(day night change), sandbox elements and expand the planets, add a really good "Privateer/EvE" type space sim then it will be perfect.

SWTOR 3.0 maybe?

Had they done a lot of things the game would have been better. Problem is they didn't do a lot of things.  They would have been better off not releasing any space combat all as Starwars Galaxies did, until they could put in a system everyone would like (like Galaxies did)... But they didn't, they made a generic boring as shit space rail game.

Pazaak? Swoop racing? You ask about? Guess what, Boiware was going to put this stuff into game, they were going to have all kinds of crap. They had it all planned out, systems already created from other games... However, they teamed up with EA who wanted a lower rating on the game, and thus gambling had to be removed to fit the T for Teen rating.

I still have hope that this game will become what we all hope it could be, but as time goes on, that hope fades a little at a time.  I canceled my account a while back, but still kind of key an eye on it.  Granted, with Star Citizen, World of Darkness Online, and EverQuest Next... I doubt I'll play it again.

I agree. It's a pretty good game, and I have high hopes it continues to be one... Fewt hings to know before you buy though....

Many bugs, chat doesn't work, servers are unstable, all groups are forced into an open mic VOIP (no push to talk so you hear people cough, sneeze, talk to other people in their house, type and so on)

Few other annoying things you have to deal with.  Also, the world and content are rather small.  People have already completed all of the quests, I'm darn near done with them myself.  So if you are thinking it's a giant world, you will find yourself disappointed.   That being said, I've had a lot of free time so I powered through most of it rather quickly.   I would say for the normal player there is maybe a months worth of content, 2 max if you are really... really slow.

Can you tell me the craft you use, synthweaving/armormech and the schematic that changed to orange?  I'm trying to figure out if only some types can do it or if all.

I've been trying to get an orange belt and wrist, they are in game, just really rare.

Can I get some more info on RE'ing items for orange schematics? Can you do it with any item? Are you guys just guessing at this

Rather negative aren't we Mimzel?

"We're definitely not holding back anything for launch. In fact, we're trying to squeeze out as much content as possible in the time we have left"

= We could spend the rest of our lives putting every  little thing into this game and never releasing it, but we set a time frame for launch to get it out to the players.  In that window we're going to get the best quality content in, and not put something half assed out.

"Plans, of course, will change when we open the floodgates and our world to the players. We're not rigid, and we will make sure that the players are heard"

= This can go either way, but sometimes players have good ideas that help games. Many times players have good ideas that help games.  Player feedback is one reason there are beta's turns out.

You can turn nearly any statement into a negative rather easy, it isn't a skill.  You either look for the good, or you look for the bad.  Your choice.

All I gotta say is Investigation Missions sound fun as hell
