it was a nice break from poorly done indie sandbox mmos. that being said i don't see it coming back from it's original open beta. If it does I have a feeling it won't be sandboxy anymore. I liked exploring the vast regions, the player built cities and ships. it was a helpful community. eh |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Tightening Up the Graphics
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/18/12 2:09:18 AM
the hero engine is shit, everyone said that the minute bioware announced it was the engine they were using. it shows biowares being new to the mmo field. their desire to keep theri work in house at bioware hurt them, ea had the resources and financing to pull off a bigger game, the trade off would have been EA meddling and influence, which i would have settled for if it got me a better looking game with more features |

if thats the only big ne3ws for 2012 it's gonna be a damn stale years for mmos. you left out the sunstone valley expansion coming to free realms i believe spring of this year. and cummon tor is gonna have a big content push this year...and what about the game trion is developing with syfy what happened to that |

i dont really care if i see 500 people around me especially if it crimps my gameplay due to lag. swg suffered alot of lag and latency in high pop fights..which lets be very honest didn't happen very often. what i think is giving the sense of emptiness is the total lack of any immersion elements on the worlds...running water, flora and fauna, traveling npcs. i keep hearing it's limitations of the hero engine more and more from people with technological experience so....i question why they wen't with a very cheap engine. sony has said they have a new sandbox coming in 2013 that incorporates alot of swg elements. if that happens tor could be in trouble. |

Star Wars The Old Republic Fail
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/20/11 5:40:02 PM
mee why f f2p is inherently bad for the industy, it brainashes people like the op into thinking every game on the face of the earth must offer something free. if you wanted a free trial should tried a beta weekend that not what launch day is for. i'm really getting this sense of entitlment people have on here. |

i'm sorry gw always came off as a poor mans wow. they only got their popularity because they didn't want to nickle and dime people. The simple fact is with the star wars ip behind it this game has longevity. it doesn't matter if you love or hate it or themeparks or whatever. It's gonna be the lasy long term popular subscription mmo. unfrotunately for people who don't really follow the industry f2p and social games have hurt the market ALOT....the recession is starting to hit the gaming industry and alot of bad things are coming. |

if you watch where blizzard is going they are making baby steps to full f2p..and you have to wonder if things they are implementing in wow are tests for titan |

Blizz claims Swor will fail

you have to read deeper into what the guy is trying to say. even sony seemed to lament the high liscencing fee LA put on the star wars IP. Instead of a tiered fee where as the game aged the fee reduce I had heard LA actually increased it twice over the course of SWG's lifetime. Granted that may have been LA's way of killing SWg to begin with but in the end that will take a chunk of profite out of the old republic. The high cost of voice over production for expansions and content will also be a mitigating factor. but yes the game will be profitable, it has garnered a big following and is getting a small attrition from swg and wow. The thing peole need to also be aware of is this is being used as a testbed for a ME mmo in the same way as EVE was being used as a test bed for WOD. All the trials and tribulations bioware experiences with this their first mmo will go on to other projects. I actually see bioware handing the game itself off completely to EA in roughly 3 years..a time when the cost of production would hinder biowares development of other projects. No for anyone who's experiences how EA handles their properties they like to milk their clients for money with expansions...don't get me wrong well crafted expansions but nonetheless. My biggest worry is this turns into the horrible decisions clone wars online has taken with immersion breaking vanity items. yes i know entirely different game and dev but when i see a clone trooper with butterfly wings i realize LA no longer respect their own IP they are trying to milk it for every credit they can. At least for the most part trek hasn't done that in terms of gaming...i dunno I'll be playing the game at launch and seeing as I had alot of fun with beta and I know alot of friends who will play i'll stick witht he game until something immersion breaking occurrs. I havent been involved in a mmo since there.com closed...while not a game and more a virtual world it was one of the few places that kept me exploring and having fun. |

Levels 1-10 are going to turn people off.
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/27/11 5:02:57 PM
my sith inquisitor 1-10 was fun...tropper not so much, jedi night even worse. It also had to do with alot of lag on the light side starting areas I experienced too. I dunno what it was but exploring ruins was more compelling than fighting sepratists. Just me. |

Who's changed their mind after playing this weekends beta?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/27/11 4:50:24 PM
to e honest i was very much on the fence. I waffled 2 or 3 times at cancelling my pre-order based on leaks on the web and the constant droning that this was WOW in space. I HATED WOW the 3 times I tried to get into it. I piced up a chararacter in beta yesterday and if it wasn't for some server issues I would still be playing it right now....that's how much different the game is from WOW. No it doesn't break the mmo mold or offer much in the way of ground breaking additions, but it is a solid fun game and thats where there key word is FUN. I'm not laying out spread sheets to manage resources like eve, or trying to compete with the jonses for the best gear, I am having FUN...something I haven' t had much in games aside from freerealms, but that was more cause it's fun to explore in free realms. So, hey if it's not your game sorry but this is going to keep alot of people interested not only in mmos but also the star wras franchise. |

I started a sith inquisitor/sorcerer. I had to turn down shardows and tree spawn to correct low fps. But the graphics still looked damn good. The environments are a little lifeless. the intitial quest line is captivating even if i did have trouble finding quest contacts especially in the sith academy....maybe im just used to the handholding in free realms a bit much. Combat was fast and fluid...even for a buttion mashing kinda exercise i didnt' feel like i was just hitting the number pad randomly. character cusomization was mediocre however i gathered that as you level more clothing options come to you via vendors and drops....so maybe it's not too bad. I'm working to get my companion and ship hopefully before beta ends. i am not cancelling my pre order...thats for sure |

games i regretted
spore: hollow game play sto: well for being as subbed as long as i was and barely playing
xyson: they incorrectly billed me and game blew bsgo: waste of an ip global agenda: slow on introdoucing new maps, tech issues made playing bothersome and frustrating mars war: never subbed it was a descent planetside clone with no real objectives sims3; was just a visual upgrade of sims 2 dawntide: only because after not mentioning a word an abrupt postponement of launch after financing issues and it was the only sandbox i actually liked ugh |

Amezing game. Finally something new and not some boring traditional fantasy world clone
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/26/11 7:14:53 AM
i'm patching to get ino the beta right now i am keeping my enthusiasim moderatye. I worry i get caught up on the hype train and then get let down especially since last night i tried the swg air ground combat and realized tor might not have this for over a year if ever given the game engine they are using. i'm also bothered by how boring the jedi path seem based on beta tester feed back....maybe its human nature i dunno but i'd think LA woulda wanted the jedi to have the bigger appeal? Its gonna irritate peopel but i'd like to see non instance housing as part of endgame ...something to aspire to attain. I dunno once i'm in beta i'll see |
