Top Ten Most Popular MMOs by Active Users
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/14/07 5:31:55 PM
I'm nearly positive that those Second Life numbers are pure fabrication. The last article that I read that actually delved into SL's numbers came up with about 90k active users who play it. 90k is a respectable number, but its not nearly the 500k-1m that their marketing department would lead you to believe.

What should Blizzard do to hold the interest of its Veterans?

I'm not saying I do either, but I don't have to. Blizzard is a very successful game company. They obviously know what they are doing, and when you can show me your multi-million dollar international business that brings in the type of revenue that Blizzard does, then you can come back and tell me I'm clueless. I'll wait. In the meantime, let me assure you that hiring new people is not always the way to increase productivity. In fact, your entire presupposition is that Blizzard somehow needs to be more productive. This is not the case, and their success is proof of that, regardless if you personally feel otherwise. Why take on a greater workload at all if your current workload is producing acceptable profits? Why mess with a proven development team by bringing in new people who could potentially cause problems within the developer community? My expectations of what I needed to receive in exchange for my monthly subscription were met or exceeded during the time that I paid for the WoW service. If you think for a minute that I, or any other WoW subscriber didn't "get anything", then you are simply out of touch with reality, and your perception is clouded by your emotions. You certainly are not speaking for all customers, and you certainly are not basing your argument on facts. Good luck to you in whatever business you manage though. You'll need it. |

To the OP,
First, and not to be rude here, but your posts don't give the impression of an intelligent driving force behind them, so you really have no place lecturing us on MMORPG trends. Second, you use nothing but common fallacies to back up your claims, such as presupposition, anecdotal evidence, and bandwagoning. Now, with that out of the way, I think it goes without saying that any company who would rest on their proverbial laurels can find themselves being supplanted by another, more ambitious company. Thats the nature of a competitive market. Is Blizzard worried about AoC and WAR? I doubt it. But I certainly think they would be foolish to not keep an eye on these games, and make sure that WoW stays competitive. The people who are worried are most definitely Mythic and Funcom. Not only are they going up against the juggernaut of WoW, but they are also going to be competing with each other, as well as the many other established MMORPG's in the market. |

An Insect Based MMO-If it was done.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/13/07 4:42:55 PM
As with any idea, its far easier to imagine the potential of it, than it is to deliver a fun and engaging MMORPG based on it.
Honestly, you could have an MMORPG based on amoeba if you implemented it correctly. IMHO, game mechanics, combat dynamics, and a fully realized world determine whether or not an MMORPG is successful. Now, that being said, I always found insects to be real high in the "cool" factor. I used to love my insect transformers (Insecticons!). If a game company brought a fully fleshed out, insect based MMORPG to market, I would definitely be interested. Some of the basic RPG classes can all easily be represented by insects. Mage could be a bombardier beetle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_beetle Warrior could be a rhinoceros beetle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros_beetle Rogue could be an assassin bug en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin_bug Not really sure how to work out a healer type bug, hehe. |

Sounds like your mind is already made up.
But, on the off-chance you will actually listen to an opinion... the answer is, it depends. IMHO, LOTRO is made for very casual play with a heavy emphasis on role playing. If that is your cup of tea, then knock yourself out. However, if you want a solid MMORPG, with well designed gameplay elements and combat dynamics, as well as a quality endgame, then IMHO you may want to look elsewhere. |

What should Blizzard do to hold the interest of its Veterans?

They cannot be expected to produce more simply because their game is highly successful. Think about it. Lets say you work 8 hours a day to the best of your abilities at your job. Your manager notices this, and gives you a raise at the next review. Does that mean that now you have to work 10 hours a day and take on an even larger work load because you are getting paid more? |

There was a recent press release about Runescape that discussed it subscriptions numbers. They claimed 5million active free subscribers, and 1 million active paid subscribers. So its possible that could have created enough interest to get it in Yahoo's top searches.
Another possibility, is that companies pay to be placed in those positions on popular web portals. |

Today's Lesson: The "Flog".
Inspired by an article in a popular tech oriented magazine. "Flog" is a newly coined term for a viral marketing technique in which a fake blog (hence the term flog) is created for the sole purpose of advertising. Probably the most well known example was the flog "All I want for Xmas is a PSP". So why talk about this here? Simple... links to a flog have been appearing occasionally on these forums. This flog is merely an advertisement for a new MMORPG themed site. It was originally advertised directly by "fosts" (fake posts, I just made that up, btw), where "users" would make posts similar to "Hey I just saw this really cool website, check it out!". Later, the posts became a bit more savvy, and would try to include some sort of topic, such as "Hey I think MMO's need a better death penalty. Check out this website that talks about it!". And now, the fosts are centered around creating a discussion about "someone's" flog. They have been even more successful in drawing web traffic, due to presenting the link in a manner which incites a more heated discussion. For example, the fost would be similar to "Hey, in some guy's blog, he says PvP is the most important part of MMORPG's. I think PvE is the most important, and he's dumb. Check out his blog!". I realize I am using vague and generalized terminology here, but I am hesitant to link the actual sites or posts, because inadvertently I would be generating traffic to those sites, which is their goal. Web 2.0 is turning out to be nothing more than a slimy advertiser's wet dream come true. My advice, trust no one, be skeptical, and make liberal use of the Whois database (if you think its trustworthy, hehe). |

'Free Realms' Aims for Bigger Audience than 'Warcraft'

"We're taking our cues from some of the other successful games in the Asian market..."
In other words, we cant seem to get big subscription numbers on our own, so we are going to copy other, more successful, models. I don't think this will have much an impact over here in the states due to it being "just another Asian style mmo". Only time will tell if it can make an impact in the already flooded Asian market, though. On one hand, there seems to be plenty of room for growth in that market, since there seems to be MMO's of all types being released there all the time. On the other hand, with all those games being released all the time, theres sure to be some serious competition. Claiming that you are going to be bigger than WoW in your first foray into a new market seems like setting yourself up for failure. This is my opinion. Edit: I think (hope) that comment about 99.9% of WoW's population being kids was just sarcasm... |

The game you are looking for is called Eve. Of course, you probably already know that, and are just hoping to convince a few noobs to go to low sec space on a "quest", so you and 5 of your gate camping buddies can blow them up.

As we all know, the best way to send a message to a company that you feel has very poor customer service and drastically changed a product you paid for, is to be complacent and accepting. That'll show em.
|
|
|
Because the head of a company that has 3 dead or dying MMORPG's under their belts obviously knows what the MMORPG customer wants and what endgame is all about.
