TBH that still looks 100 times better than LOTROs characters. (Just so you know I'm subbed to LOTRO at the moment) I wish LOTRO had that good character models but it hasn't stopped me playing it... yet.

The amount of energy, resources, and enthusiasm being thrown at The Old Republic raises one obvious question: What about Galaxies? LucasArts was emphatic about the fact that there's enough room for two viable Star Wars MMORPGs to co-exist.

"We're looking to continue to support Galaxies with high-quality updates on into the future," said Jake Neri, producer for LucasArts' online division. "We're focused on a chapter release around Hoth, where we're re-creating the battle at Echo Base. We'll allow players to get in groups and jump in and just participate in a very high-quality battle. We've just released a trading card game inside of Galaxies, and fans are eating it up. Looking into next year, we're going to revamp our droid system with something called droid commander." Neri also said that SOE Austin was working in conjunction with LucasArts on further additions to Galaxies for years to come, with no end to the game in sight.

---

No way in hell there is any truth to this.

Sure, they will continue with their once every 3 months lipstick jobs on this pig with their team of entry level college intern Devs (who are being trained on the NGE for future employment at DCMMO)  until the plug is pulled.  Which will happen soon as the new game is released.  Anyone who believes otherwise is completely denying reality.

There is no incentive for SOE to put anything into this.  In fact, I expect them to start working to sabotage Bioware.  They may even sue.

LOL! What? There has never been any "high-quality" updates for SWG ever

For me it really isn't about what texture the armors have or what they look like(well except the few uber dorky looking hats and shoulderpads). Its the fact that even most of the heavy armors look like paper-think skinsuits.

A couple guys showing off their stainless steel swords. These swords would weigh about 1/10th of what an actual medieval sword would weigh.

And pay attention here to the mo-caps (AoC realtime)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6FWHaZ8A8c

You state LOTRO has repeating animations but all I saw in this video was the same left/right slashing... looks more repetitive than the video link for LOTRO you provided.

The Witcher with a HUGE Bastard Sword...look how fast he swings

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/11398.html?type=wmv

Jeez, man. The Witcher only looks like that because it is a motion capture of a guy in a cable wire harness fighting with a hollow broom stick. The motion capture guy would not move like that carrying a 30lb sword.

Then LOTRO with the repeating animations for swordfights (could not find too many as most of these are just people running around showing the landscapes...)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8yb698XORk&feature=related

The animations in this video seem decent. They have a more realistic look to them and do not have the cartoonish superhuman look that most games have.

Actually swords in medieval times were not heavy. Even the heaviest 2-handed swords weight around 3kg and thats around 6,5lb

Also Witchers combat was based on real medieval sword-fighting techniques.

And what comes to LOTROs animations I think they are at "ok" level but could be alot better and characters do look a little cartoony.

I've played WoW and LOTRO and honestly I give LOTRO's combat system the edge with no competition.   I disagree with what you are saying about the chasing after mobs with melee being awkward with the cooldowns -- keep in mind I have a 50 Guard and a 42 champion -- my main is a 50 minstrel.  If you play your class well the journey through the skills is quite smooth and a lot more strategic than WoW IMO.    So your statement that if you'd played both games it would be absolutely clear that WoW is more fluid/smooth is not accurate.   It is still just your subjective opinion which you are entitled to but it's hardly fact.

People are going to enjoy different things about combat systems in all the MMO's and will play what they are most comfortable with an enjoy.   As a steady player of LOTRO I see very little about the current combat system the actual community is overly worried about them changing.    The one issue LOTRO has that WoW doesn't have is it demands a fairly powerful PC so if you're experienced a stutterred or chunky game play I'd wager your graphics levels are set too high for your PC to really handle it.   WoW being an old game runs very very well on a multitude of older PC's.

I have enough power on my PC to run LOTRO in DX10 and very high settings smoothly so the problem is not there. I have level 50 Champion on LOTRO and Had 60 Druid and Rogue in WoW so I dont really see why or how LOTRO would be "a lot more strategic than WoW" its almost the same except in LOTRO you are doing it in slow motion with skills that have small delay even if they are described "instant cast".

Not saying LOTRO is bad game but just slower paced.

Mmmh, well the combat system: click on a monster and click on a spell to attack it.. Is verry common in mmo's. I don't believe it's really slow. You have to like it or not. Is the turbine downloader annoying?  strange I never have problems  with it. You should maby describe your problem with the downloader. And I have to say it seems your picking on little things. Melee combat isn't fluid? explain! I don't understand it because I can't see anny problem with the melee combat. I play a hunter so I do quite a lot melee combat.

Combat in WoW is more smooth/fluid and you know that if you have played both games. I think its mostly because WoW has lots of "Instant" skills/spells and LOTRO has very few (if at all). If you are playing only hunter you may not know this but running after something and hitting it in melee feels awkward in LOTRO because there are relatively long delays in melee skills.

Trial would be good idea. I didn't get to beta so I never got to try this game. I never buy MMOs before testing them personaly and I'm not going to risk 50€ just to check it out.

Let's face it folks.  WoW style theme park games have been coming out since WoW.  And due to the success and the money hungry group lucas arts is..   They will most likely follow this forumla.

Thoughts?

isnt this swg in its current state?

Nope. The equation does not have "Broken piece of shit" in it.

Just joking around. Btw what is the "teaser" OP is talking about? Have I missed something or does he just mean the 2 pics that been around here few days now?

They're just nasty and they don't move right and it's hard to explain it without showing it to you in person but they just feel very off. I want to play on because I want to see what the player housing has to offer but frigging the character models are stopping me currently.

No offence m8 and this isn't intended as a flame but how long have you been playing exactly?  you need to be level 15 and have around one gold to get a player house (small but still housing), Character models are pretty good compared to a lot of others m8.

PS: i aint a fanboy or anything, i quit the game 6 months ago after getting 2 characters to level 50 and experiencing almost everything in game, i got bored....

What game has more ugly character models than LOTRO? (out of the AAA MMOs not Runescape or some shit like that)

Is this coming to consoles??

I also don't like the idea of MMOs on console. It severely limits the upgrades done to the game itself IMHO. For example if the game is very good even after few years and devs need to do graphics upgrade and they can't since the console hardware is limiting it. I can imagine there would be all kinds of limitations like if they wanted to add housing and stuff like that (What Turbine did with LOTRO and all the other stuff with patches of huge sizes). Would that be possible with consoles?

Can someone paste link where they say this is coming to consoles or is this just a rumour? If this is true the game wont intrest me at all.

The graphics look sooo dated man, like for a 2008 game I expected better but to me it all looks reused from world of warcraft.

Yeah I had the same feeling too. I was expecting this one to be more dark than the other two. I had goosebumps when I was playing 1 during midnight with the lights off. Theres that guitar music from 1 that also gives me the creeps. I'm a bit disappointed here.

Well graphics don't make the game. Gameplay is more important to me.

yay, the release of another long anticipated level based game.

im sorry but i cant care anymore.  after playing the joy that was a skill based star wars sandbox mmo i dont think any star wars design is going to be as successful.  especially after the disasters that were episodes 1-3 and the clone wars animated movie.

star wars is a dying franchise.  they need a full reboot, or they need to let it go.  too many bad ip management decisions in a row from lucas.  i just dont see how in this economy and market can handle another level based mmo or how it is going to survive the wow and eq comparisons that will go right along with that design.  people will argue the differences, but its still going to be wack a mole with math.  thats the main basis for that design.

Iets face it, since swg was announced there hasnt been a star wars release of any kind that was worth a damn.  not movies, not books, not animated shows.  not anything.  hell the best star wars content any of us has seen in the last 5 years was triumph making fun of what "hardcore" fans it has level.  and seriously.....   look at those people...

george lucas needs to retire this franchise and move on to something else.  he lost touch with his fanbase years ago.

I just cant help but see this mmo as a super expensive misuse of investor dollars in a time people cant really afford to back irresponsible projects.

p.s.

if its level based, its going to get wow comparisons no matter who made it.  theres only so much you can do with that design.  and its been done to death for what, 14 years now in the online space?  theres no escaping that.

Aren't you forgetting the KotOR games?

What if this ends up not being a star wars mmorpg?

Or worse, set in a certain period in the timeline that people don't want?

I hope it is a star wars mmorpg and that it set similar to KOTOR.  Can't wait...........................

I'm guessing alot of pissed off fans

What do you mean worse if certain period of time that people don't want? I bet people are more pissed if it isn't Star Wars MMO.

Worse. How about star wars mmorpg based of the Ewoks Christmas Special?! *puke*

I love those furrballs

No seriously. No one will ever make ewok MMO! No one can be that stupid .. can they?

Why would you want that? The game ends soon after you hit level 50 (IMO). Only thing left to do is grind traits or grind rift for better gear that will be obsolete when expansion goes live.
