Very good question. I played the Star Trek Online MMO for about 2 weeks and quit. It was very pretty and glossy but really just a poor copy of what's gone before. I have thought about this a bit as well and wonder if a Star Trek game is possible. My initial reaction is that EvE Online's persistent world is probably the closest mould I can think of. Players could play 6 major races (3 aligned on both sides) and basically fight for space, explore and set up stations. Throw in a lot of missions that allow morale choices e.g. federation player being offered a lot of cash to transport drugs. Ships could work the same as they are supposed to be so big and keep the officer slots the same. The way it is now, its just a glorified arcade game. |

How can I change time zones after moving home?
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 12/21/10 2:01:56 AM
well I downloaded the EU version of WAR and I thought that restricts me to the EU. I have now moved to Australia and would like to play in this time zone, so I need to somehow get on this zone. So do I need to download again or trigger something? dont care if i lose character, I am only playing free version |

How can I change time zones after moving home?
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 12/15/10 3:07:47 PM
I am sure this has happened to other people. I have been in the EU for years and recently moved to a new time zone.. (Australia). Can I access the time zone Australia is in and start a new character on their servers? Or do I need to do a new install for the new time zone? Thanks |

To be fair I can imagine the game coming into its own with mass PvP and if a guild was organised you could have some form of strategy. New patch seems interesting with flight and skaven. I haven't been on for about 2 weeks now, I will continue to drop in and out but although it seems pretty polished, there is some kind of soul missing for me. Maybe playing the table top for too long, in a way, has ruined the experience. In table top if you win you feel like you have really crushed your enemies. In this game its kinda, death doesnt really matter, winning or losing is only temporary. Just like most MMO's but some do it a little better. |

AoC is probably the only game I am tempted to come back to. I played solidly for 6 months but never got to level 80. I have 3 above 70 still. I actually didn’t leave as I really liked the game but due to population dropping a fair bit I got a little tired with trying to find people to group with and then my clan pretty much dissolved so the city building stopped and I didn’t have any mates that played. The final straw was crafting. I don’t mind the system at all but I prefer games which have crafting at the heart and player made stuff is always best. I found too many every day missions gave gear that was better.
So in saying that I am looking at the expansion and I figure if I get 2-3 months of good solo play then I am happy enough. I think AoC is really underrated. It’s a gorgeous game, probably the best looking fantasy game out there. Real fatal blows that make other games seem a little bland. Plus once I really got my head around how to use my character properly, combat was fluid, exciting and skill actually made a massive difference.
I know people drop WAR alongside AoC as epic fails for major companies but for me there is a huge difference. AoC has some epic encounters and it’s almost up there for a solo game like quality. WAR
AoC and Vanguard deserve a much higher population now for what they are today. Both had shocking launches but both in essence are now massive games, have huge content and are really up there.
I think I am definitely heading back, just need to find some time.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Warzone Thoughts
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/11/10 8:18:13 AM
I can understand why they do it from a technical point of view but I personally hate scenarios. I tend to play for a day or so to see what its like then don't bother any more. Every MMO I have ever played with this model fails. The scenarios are used a lot at the start then end up being a ghost town and only occassionally visited by a noob. If and I mean only if they incorporated it really well so that it had meaning. e.g. winner opens up dungeon for their side etc. Then I may be swayed but the entire time I find myself playing a scenario inside an MMO, all I can think about is, 'why not play a game like Modern Warfare 2 that is specifically built for this? Why suffer sub standard combat with auto aim or whatever when its done a 1000 times better in other genre's. An MMO needs to be big, little or no instances and actions mean something on a whole. Not queued up waiting to have a cartoon like whacking fest.

What really happened to Earth & Beyond? Be awesome F2P now

WAR going same way then? Looks a little empty and I KNOW Xfire is not guide but its quite ridiculously low. Something like 2500 hours. |

Wow that is really cool. Going to check that out later at home. Just thinking that if E&B was out now, they would never cancel it but probably make it go F2P. EA must know that they could just turn the servers on and they would have 1000's of subs, that would just be the fans going back. |

General Discussion « Earth and Beyond 11/01/10 4:53:27 AM
Earth & Beyond was my very first MMO I ever played. I still rememeber the awe I had when I jumped into the ship and zoomed around the universe with 1000's of other players. Its too long ago but the trading in the game was very active and I loved gathering recipes and the joy of learning a rare one.
After several months I moved on to Jumpgate (needed PvP). Then I was sad to hear E&B closed down.
There are plenty of crappy MMO's out there making a lot of money. Anyone know why E&B shutdown? Wouldn't it be an awesome game for F2P and micro payments? may look a little outdated but it would have 10's of thousands playing.
(Found the old PC game box on the weekend, brought back memories)

Old WAR hater trying it out again, thoughts…
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 10/27/10 2:28:51 PM
Some thoughts after trying the game again.
Putting this thread into perspective
After leaving back then I decided to try out the endless trial. Some thoughts.
Pro’s
Cons If I ask myself should I subscribe to the game due to some very cool elements I am not sure there is enough to warrant it for the following reasons. · Combat is just so vanilla, it doesn’t require much at all, just push button and you use skill to hit. I worry about any game where I can just hit 1-3 common skills and pretty much that is combat. · I know there are trees later on but its very rigid on levelling. I feel like my character is too similar to every other person playing the same kind. · Once again I find myself asking, ‘what is the point?’ Even though I had fun I just wonder how long I can go with a simple combat mechanic and pretty much the rinse and repeat RvR combat. I just wished back then and I still wish now that WAR added a lot more RPG elements that gave it some depth. Generally speaking it’s a game that focus’s entirely on combat but the combat is too simple. It reminds me of a pinball machine. I really love playing it but how long can I go before I get bored?
Overall I can say that I am not a ‘hater’ anymore. There are some very slick elements to the game which I saw in other MMO’s and I think did a very good job. However I am not sure how a person can be subscribed long term with this game as it just seems a little hollow on ‘point’. I am going to continue to play the endless trial for short bursts of fun but I still can’t see the value in subscribing. If it was a D&D type setup then I would play and they may even make a little money out of me. Plus it would bring in the masses and this game badly needs it.
Just some of my thoughts. |

No crafting equals death for the MMO these days, my opinion only, however some examples.
Vanguard – Played at launch and would have left after the first week. I ended up subbed for 6 months because of crafting. I know at least 12+ people who did the same. (all in the guild)
Fallen Earth – Love the game because of the crafting involved and how its integrated. I am now subbed for 12 months + and I would have left after 3 if it didn’t have it.
There are plenty of other examples but I notice that games with poor crafting tend to lose huge amounts of players after the first month or the 3 month mark. People don’t play MMO’s to combat all day, if they do they tend to be PS3 fans. The pure combat MMO’s out there have died a death so fast its not funny.
So pretty much proven that you need it. Besides an MMO’s greatness is based on what you can do besides combat. That is what makes the game great.

If someone offered you 50 million dollars to create a MMORPG, what would you make?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/18/10 8:51:56 AM
MMO that was built gradually by players. e.g. bare minimum buildings and each race had their own building reconstruction projects going on. Every single mission, tax paid, death toll, went into rebuilding the race's capital, towns, villages etc. Enemy races can attack these and destroy the buildings back to the last 'fixed' building point. So MMO starts off after a global catastrophe, war, famine whatever. And the game play is about rebuilding your race. At each stage the building will show improvements. (complete building is obviously finished before launch) Once a building is finished then vendors occupy it and players can use the service etc. Missions would be a mix of PvE and also sending out players to destroy enemy cities. Clans can dedicate themselves to one of the sides and pitch up a front line piece of land and try and develop their base there. etc etc etc... |

Do the Palestinians really want peace?
Religion & Politics « General Discussion 10/18/10 8:44:30 AM
Based on the OP's point. You have to see it from the Palestinians point of view.
Its like someone comes in and parks a caravan on your front lawn and then gradually takes a metre of your house bit by bit. Obviously you want them out of your home and off your property all together so you go all out to stop them. Then they stop and ask you, 'hey, how about we keep the front lawn, front porch and front room and we wont try and take over your bedrooms, just as long as you don't try and kick us off your land."
What would you do?? I personally would walk off and get a shotgun and tell them what I think.
However the reality is, Israel is not going anywhere and Palestinians need to come to some arrangement so they can rebuild what they have left. Until they do, Israel will continue to pick them off like easy low hanging fruit and then raise their hands crying that they have no choice because Palestine keep attacking them.
I wouldn't call it genocide but if you look at the land being picked off by Israel, how much is going to be left in 50 years? Once gaza is swallowed up, Israel will hope Palestine will become another nation that dissapears from the history books. If Palestine went all out for the peace route and didn't attack then they may be able to stir up enough international reaction for Israel to stop.
Personally I think with Israel being backed by the USA and having massive advantage with weapons, Palestine is well and and truly fked. And this will only create more terrorism for the rest of us.

General: Fighting Talk: EVE vs Star Trek Online
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/18/10 8:33:33 AM
I wish I could have taken out some odds on that result. Its like betting on Mike Tyson v.s. Britney Spears. I would put my house on EvE. Still I like to watch a slaughter now and then. STO had so much promise, just look at the instant fan base. I even knew people who don't play MMO's but were going to for STO. It just turned out to be eye candy in very tight, restrictive space. More like an STO postcard than MMO. sad. |

If you are going to put out a statement like this then it would be good to have a few bullet points on ‘why’ it will revolutionise the industry and kill off WoW etc. (Just for those of us who haven’t followed it in detail etc)
However I would be careful with the high fives at the moment. Like one of the earlier posts that listed about 7 MMO’s hailed as the next messiah of the MMO world, they all turned up with a small thud and then stuttered along like an old car, some have since improved and held subs while others have improved and still struggle.
Where do I sit? I love Star Wars, Babylon 5, Star Trek, Battlestar, space opera etc etc. So to say I am buzzing about TOR is an understatement.
However I have stopped myself from reading anything about it and getting caught up in the hype, both for and against. When it comes out I will jump in for a few months and judge how it is for me. Right now I would settle for a robust, good performance and interesting MMO. Anything else is a bonus and I certainly don’t think it will change the MMO genre in any great way. I can hope though… |

I am currently on trial myself but I am not sure of the grind argument. I just look at DFO as another Oblivion. I just play through what I have to do and the skills gradually creep up. Not sure the game is best played trying to grind up your skill as fast as possible. If you think like that then its the same argument with any other MMO if you try and power level through. People moan about having to kill 1000 mobs to hit level 50 etc. I thought the whole point of DFO is that you don't have to camp a zone to gring up levels, because there isnt any! |

My biggest disappointment isn’t the game, it’s the players

Yea I have to agree with the heart pumping stuff even in PvE. This morning I managed 1 hour and I nearly died a couple of times, but I found obstacles actually useful in DFO, so I pop behind a rock and madly try and recover before the goblins got over.
I noticed they have made it very realistic. An NPC even from long distance will spot you unlike most MMO’s where they walk within 10 feet blissfully unaware of you.
The last time I had a feeling like this is running a complex in EvE, deep in pirate territory, loaded up to the hilt with expensive loot and then doing the run back to safe space. Probably the other time I can remember is mining for about 1 hour in Jumpgate in a PvP zone and moving the ore ship out of the belt and back to the jumpgate. It was like a bad dream where you try and run but don’t move.
DFO certainly gets the pulse up. I didn’t know about starter dungeons, I might have to check it out very soon.
