Alganon: David Allen Responds
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 4/07/10 6:34:39 PM
Heh, Allen should of stayed in hiding. If he thinks that about a game that is clearly in trouble, and thinks that his staff was talented when he hired junior programmers and payed them an unusually high salary then ok. I mean don't get me wrong, I would of took the job. But the people he hired were not some rare breed of super human developers. Either or, cival suits are useless for the most part. Part your ways, move on and be done with it. If he thinks his name is tarnished, he should of quit a long time ago. I'll do him justice though, he pay's his employee's which means alot in this day and time. But he has never had any good business sense. I mean seriously, he was trying to make a replica WoW .... just um .... yeah. |

I love it, even when a good update comes, people have something to say about it negatively. If some of you thought Allen was doing something, then you were fooled. The tribute system wasn't even halfway done before Allen left and was almost about to be yanked from the game. I'm not going to show proof, you can either believe me or not. And the UI was totally revamped, not just fixed like Allen was doing. Allen wanted this game to be a "WoW" game, and the investors wanted it differently. Allen was about to destroy this company, and the only thing people can talk about is how big of a mouth Derek Smart has. Yeah, he may be an upfront guy. But he does get stuff done, and that's what this game needed. From what I read, things seem to be going good and if this update comes, it could be a small turnaround for a game about to be placed in the junk pile. To be brutally honest, I'd rather have Derek Smart at the helm then Allen. David ALlen is thee worst CEO I've ever had the pleasure to meet in person, and loves the double talk. Derek Smart, while rather chatty kathy, atleast has some business sense. He may not be someone you want as a neighbor, but atleast he's not in hiding. So in a sense, yes Derek has done things, hes got the ball rolling, whereas it was about to stop. Is that not enough? |

Alganon: Derek Smart vs. ex-Alganon Employees
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/19/10 6:29:11 PM
I think we all know by now who Derek Smart is. But regardless of that fact, David Allen did screw this game up and it's not his first time either. I know Derek can be off the edge and more out in the open but that does mean he's at fault. If anything, I like the fact that hes talking about the situation. It may be considered drama and not needed by some if not many, but at least no one can really say hes lying. In fact, not one post on gamesutra states hes not telling the truth. The former employees almost seem like they would rather hype up a former boss who almost stopped them from getting their last paycheck. I can almost see it now, in about 5 years, this same click of employees with David at the helm will be killing yet another company. And are people still going to gloss over that fact, or will they finally let David have it. Anyways, I hope the best for the game. And as a last note, watch the editor video for the Alganon Editor. It will show you why this game has the issues it has. |

Your question is more than valid, if he was talking about the game going free to play. But this thread is moreso for people interested in hosting a KoDC server. Hence the reason he stated partners. =) |

General: GDC 2010: EA to Publish 38 Studios' "Project Mercury"

EA is publishing the single-player, not the MMO as of yet. It's an introduction to the universe which the MMO will encompass. It will also be coming to the PC, which sounds good. Wonder if they have dx10/11 built into it. |

My only gripe with consoles over PC's is SIZE! My thought on consoles is that they should be smaller than a PC and more portable. But it's almost as if things are going backwards. Besides Nintendo, which it's consoles have relatively stayed the same size if not smaller, consoles just seem to getting larger. PSone, two and now three have seen increased sizes. The PSone is now a lot smaller but it took well over 2 years for that to happen after it came out. And the PS2 is still large, and PS3 is even larger. Xbox and it's 360 counterpart have always remained large also. I see notebooks and laptops coming out monthly that seem to get smaller, thinner and more portable. And this is while upgrading tech. But consoles can't do the same? Hmmmmmm. If things progress they way they are, consoles will no longer be what I believe they were intended to be. And will become a PC in itself. And Microsoft will be the first one to attempt to pursue it. I guess when this happens, this debate would be mute, wouldn't it? =) Don't be surprised when the Xbox720(if that's what they call it) pops up with a $1000+ price tag and ways to upgrade it's speed and graphical assets to be comparable if not better than a computer. |

I noticed your title says MMORPG, but post doesn't. So if not an MMORPG, then i'd go with DIRT 2. |

Multiverse is good as been stated for indie developers. But if your starting from nothing I'd go with the UDK(Unreal 3) engine. Here is probably the best place to start. The first link is the best in my opinion and Good Luck. If nothing else, you can use your game in a portfolio as a tech demo or what not. EDIT: fixed links |

LOTRO and Age of Conan because of DirectX 10. But EvE comes in a close second. I would add TERA to the list but it's not out yet. |

The original developers have given up with this game and are working on something else. It's sad that things are going this way, but its the nature of business, which a lot of people tend to forget when talking about games we like to play for fun. While we sit here wanting an enjoyable experience, investors are only thinking with their pockets. Put yourself into a business and you can see the whole picture. Money is > then your fun enjoyable experience. |

Matter fact, if you watch the youtube video, it states it's something they hope to have done come version 3.0. How people thought it was more than that is beyond me as they can view any in-game video to see what Aion is now. By the way, the title of the video is "AION The Tower of Eternity 3.0 Vision". |

Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising: Interview with Tim Schubert
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/23/10 6:16:41 PM
From an EX-Internal Beta tester's standpoint, this game had huge potential. This was going to be my game of choice before being canceled back in 07. It was the one game that encouraged exploration. Anymore remember the hundreds of easter eggs in the game? Or the pretty decent combat with fatalities? The fact that a monster could pick you up and rip your head off and send you flying? The one downfall in beta, besides bugs, was they made the Gods less worthy and almost turned them into quest givers that really played no part . I hope Heatwave extends on this. GL and I will definitely be biting at a CB spot if they have it. Here are some memories for some of you "vets" that were also IT testers: 1. To get into towns, you talked to the smurf people. 2. People spending half there testing time climbing around the starter island. 3. You could zone into a zone the climb or walk around the zone line to an empty zone. 4. BINKY!!!! <--- (which is who I hope they got back) 5. Low levels instances that had high level mobs. I loved this game for a ton of reasons. It never made it to release then but did have huge potential. Zones were huge and the armor looked badass. I also liked how one of their easter eggs was a set of armor that you had to search for each peice by I believe answering riddles. All in all, if you liked just exploration and lore, this game is for you. And someone please go over to Earth Eternal and tell Andrew to re-apply to this company. Wouldn't be the same without him. |

Allods Online: Item Mall Opened, Prices Stir Uproar

This must be an attempt to get players to not try the game. Seriously, $42,000 to put in max rune slots, in-freaking-sane. I guess you might want to sign over that 401k plan while your at it. |

Somehow people forgot this and think Frogster originated this game when they really only bought the license to host. This game is great on paper and does have some good things to do for a F2P. But if your wanting PVP in this game, get ready to shed some dollars. To be even remotely PVP ready, your going to have to spend around $300-$400 on the cash shop. While this isn't really a bad thing seeing as I've spent $15/month * 48 + $120ish in box and exp sales for WoW to be good. This is for one character, whereas I have a lot of characters on WoW that have amazing gear. I honestly wish games would get away from loot centric and become more story centric. That is another discussion in itself though. But yeah, this game has been out for a lot longer then what Frogster has had it for. Just a hint, look up RA. |

Allods Online: Open Beta Begins Next Week!
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/10/10 4:49:29 PM
Tisk, tisk. People depend so much on everything else but them to provide the 'fun'. I remember getting G.I. Joe's for Christmas and was simply excited. To most, it was just another doll or w/e. But to me, it had unlimited possibilities. I guess its truly hard to actually 'think' of something to do, right? Cheers! =) |

I think people need to start learning how to make their own fun instead of a company doing it for them. On the other hand, I don't mind being looked past when I sent you a tip a few minutes after it was official yesterday. =) |

some wow servers still have queues.
queues are a fact of life in this industry.
and the recent mmo's that i played all had much longer queues than in STO. Everquest 1 - no queues even at launch Darkfall - no queues EvE online - no queues. PoTBS - no queues. All the games I play have no queues. Saying it is a fact of life in this industry is a bunch of crap and as long as people like you keep paying for sub par products shit will never change. We need to hold these companies accountable for their shitty products but as long as people like you make excuses and keep giving them money for their crappy products and rushed games this will never change. We have the technology today to not have queues but developers know that customers will just wait in the queues and make up excuses because gamers refuse to hold them resonsible for shitty designed server clusters and games period.
You should really learn about technology and actually work with it before you continue with your rant. It clearly seems obvious you know little to nothing, and before you try, saying you work in the gaming field is only that, words. There is a reason games like Eve and DarkFall can have no ques. Look at the way they launched and that should give you an obvious reason. And there is no technology in the world that can compensate for 1000's of player characters along with NPC's/Monsters and the like and still promote lag free game play in an open world without some type of clustering/instancing that also comes with ques. Tell you what, work with the UDK and try building a small playfield, get a server up and launch about 1000 bot's on it. You will find out why developers choose instancing and ques over open worlds. It's all about playability, something you think technology can just bypass for your leisure. People need to get away from this chair developer stand point and realize that this is how games work. An mmorpg is a work in progress. For all you people who want instant satisfaction, and think we have the best tech possible for that, live in a fantasy world. I can sit here all day and hope for a open world game with dx10/11 graphics and content galore, but in reality I'd rather just like to game then wait 10+ years for development of such a game. Cheers and move back into reality, we are not hurting the development cycle and they are not hurting or taking advantage of us. EDIT: And to add, never put EQ in a category when trying to talk about tech. Seriously, you blow all credit. |

when did mmorpg.com get a DL store O_O

That is either doctored or you need to clean your internet cache. The mmorpg.com logo is not on that site for me on both of my computers. |
