This game is alot of fun. Although I am only level 20 or so myself and have lots left to check out. The combat system is what really makes this game great though. Pairing this up with a typical p2p game and you got yourself a really nice and free side game I think.

I agree 100%! The combat is fun and is the thing that I liked right off the get-go. It's not a main mmo, but it is something to play around with for a change of pace.

why not? the more types of mmo's the better! and yes, that does sound like an interesting concept.

How interesting a read would "DF Sucks donky balls!" be really?

I mean the Donky part kinda peaks the interest, then you see balls and it's like bleh.

So.....

The review had to fit Donky balls into several paragraphs. They are trying to seem interesting ya know?

Now that, my friend, is funny. You win!

hehe that was pretty good.

come on dude! easy!

dump the chick...

I guest a english version is about to open... Is that true? . I have really good feelings for this game, and I don't like wow clones much...

hehe...

To the OP, thx for the heads-up. I'll check it out right now.

I don't see any real innovation here with regards to the player's level of interactivity. Where are the games like Spellborn and Hellgate that allow a player's actual skill to have some value.

Aion is a good game, but it's not a great game (yet). It's not innovatative enough to be considered groundbreaking. It will probably do well and have a good customer base through its lifetime. The proof will be in what they do with it once it goes live (retail) for everyone.

For people looking for something completely different, Aion isn't going to cut it. But, if you are looking for another MMO with familar gameplay like you would find in most popular MMOs. then that's what you'll get and you'll be happy with it.

Agreed

I agree also. I don't think there is anything ground breaking or new here, and, personally, I'm not a big fan of the anime style art (no matter how mean and scarred you make your toon...they seem to always be at least a little effeminate. Of course, maybe that says more about me than the style, but whatever). All that said, I am having fun so far. I hope it is not just the "new mmo smell" that is getting me. I guess I'll play it for a while and see.

Managed to swipe a beta key yesterday, and ran the installer overnight. Things went smoothly, besides the initial 'cannot download' bit but thanks to a guide in these forums, that was easily remedied.

I tried running it this morning, and when I did the Patcher said that my version of DirectX wasn't compliant.

"Aion requires DirectX 9 june 2008 or higher".

Naturally, I went "oh, okay " and re-installed DirectX 10, but it was the same version as the one I had. The results were predictable.

Has anyone else ran into this problem?

It asks for DirectX 9 so you install DirectX10? Right...

Install the latest version of DirectX 9 from the Microsoft website and you will be good to go.

Edit: I should point out that DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 coexist on the same computer quite happily as DirectX 10 is not backwards compatible.

hehe...that's funny cause the link on their systems requirements posting in the support forums takes you to a dx10 download...

Why would anyone be suprised the population is going down?  with very few exceptions (EVE/WoW) MMOs tend to get most of their population right away.  DF didn't let people buy the game so they missed their chance.  now like almost every other MMO, the population will drop.

It has less to do with DF being a bad game, and more with it simply being an MMO, the bad game part is simply speeding up the process.

I agree at least for my own peronal intrest in playing DF. When it first came out I did want to check it out, but the ridiculous re-fresh mini game that was in place to try and buy the game turned me off. No way was I gonna sit at the computer doing that for a game.

If they ever offer a free trial, I'll check it out, but with everthing I've heard about it, I doubt I'll ever buy the game.

I'm going to say instanced, because I'd rather have an instanced world that works, than a seamless one that runs like Vanguard. At the end of the day it simply isn't the most important issue.

Sure, it's immersive to run around in a huge open world, but how immersive is it to stand in line to kill a rapidly respawning boss in that open world? And how immersive is it when the whole of creation grinds to a halt because of lag? If you can suspend disbelief for that  and the other problems with a seamless world, then you should be able to handle some instancing as well.

hehehe...never thought of it that way. You've got a good point. I do, however, like most, preferr seamless mmos.

Hardcore died the day blizzard realised they could make more money out of casuals, few games companies will break that trend, they are in the business of making money, and casuals makes the more. Besides, it is just a game, who wants to devote their life to playing it, most people want a game they can jump into, have fun and jump out of and then get on with real life.

The days of hardcore have come and gone, and they will never be catered for as the forefront of mmo’s again. The new model is family and friend guilds, easy to attain goals, look at wow, it has become more successful the more it has changed over the last year or two, and will continue to grow. If you want hardcore in your life, juggle two jobs and bring up a family, otherwise realise its just a game, and if you don’t like the new style of mmo's then move along to something you do like.

That, my friend, was extremely well said.

I've been trying to sign up for this game for 40 days now and to be honest, no game in the world is worth this effort to join.  I draw the line.  I have other games I actually get to play and enjoy, and may or may not have enjoyed this one - I'll never know.

Perhaps if a professional company buys out the amatuers behind Darkfall, the majority might get a look in - but I won't hold my breath as many people say the game is just an empty world lacking in content - I'm just amazed anyone knows.

Still, to actually get an account, you got to be pretty hardcore in the first place so no doubt the few that have are adamant they made the right decision.  Good luck if there really are people who play this game and not just the GM's posting as them to convince us all it exists.

April the 1st might be a good time to give it one last try perhaps - a fitting dated for this game/theory/illusion.

This is why I don't even bother. I have yet to make up my mind about DF (primarily because I haven't played it yet), but it just can't be THAT good. I mean, come on...I've got better things to do than play this lottery of trying to get DF.

hehe...That brings back the memory of the first time I went to the official WOW forums.  I had been playing the game for like a year before I decided to check them out. Well, I was having a ball in game, and when I went to the forums, I thought, "wow, I didn't realize how much this game sucked." :) Eventually you learn to take everything with a grain of salt.

Nice review! And much appreciated for us folks not able to try it out for ourselves. The more I hear these types of reviews (sans hate and rabid fanboism) the more I am glad I am not able to try the game (cause I probably would have tried it at launch) and am forced to wait and see. I think you and a few others are on to something (that the game's biggest asset is that it is, currently, "different").

EQ have death penalties, that at least are "hardcore" compared to many newer MMOs.

Anyways, as I see it: Games are not hardcore, players are.

And hardcore is not a good thing, the people I know that are hardcore players turns down dates because they are RAIDing and say no to partys because of guildmeetings.

A game can be either thing depending on how you play it.

HAHA!! That seems about right.

Honestly if something has this much negative vibes then thats a bad sign. Look at VG, AoC, even WAR. All had this and all ended up gutter trash. DF is a large and pointless UT3 map. If you dont want to pvp 24/7 or macro harvesting then it wont be the game for you. Also look at how the company runs itself. Shouldnt be a hard decision.

I'm beginning to think that this is the case (I won't put in the "pointless" comment because you could argue that with any game). That is not to say this is a negative thing. If that is your kind of game, more power to you. I just don't think it will be my thing.

The only way to know is to try the game out...but I'm not going to play the mini game of purchasing this thing. There is no way a game is that good. I'll wait until it is easily purchased.

obviously, if you get motion sickness in DF, you're too carebare and need to go back to WOW.

Aside from maybe the game itself, there doesn't seem to be alot  that is well thought out by AV...

I gotta say, Czzarre, that was my favorite review so far. I learned some things I didn't know about the game, and the overall review was very balanced, in my opinion. What you brought up about the gold sellers was intriguing, but I guess all games have those. I wonder if AV will be up to the task to combat their type.

Well done!

I imagined him screaming that whole thing in an Adam Carolla voice. Yeah, DF has some issues, that's no doubt.
