Do you think it will be a "crafting lite" game like WOW or be in depth like EVE online or fall somewhere in the middle.
Do you think they will end up supporting player made endgame gear that will rival the best dungeon drops or just be something to fill space so they can say .. look we have crafting.
I'm curious about this as one of the biggest things I miss from any MMO was the strength and diversity of player crafting in the original version of Star Wars Galaxies. I hope it will be fairly in depth but I fear its going to be a "afterthought" that is uninteresting at best. |

nah its not dead..
its a game being developed by people who dont' seem to have commercial support and have to work for a living in other areas. What it looks like to me is that they are fans of MMO's and probably even the concepts behind the orignal SWG game and have decided to "do it right" instead of pushing out buggy crap. |

This was the only MMORPG which broke the Everquest mold.
SWG Veteran Refuge « Star Wars Galaxies 8/31/07 10:49:29 AM
ya know the funny thing about SWG is that I'm still learning things about it. The most recent one was from a former employee of lucasarts who said that SWG was released before it was debugged because the marketing department at lucasarts said it was time. So instead of a good game, you got the incomplete beta game that we all loved despite its flaws.
Learning a bit more about Lucasarts from him has taught me a number of things that we say are about SOE may in fact be LucasArts fault. For instance when I commented about how all the new Lucasarts games won't be for the PC he said that sounds about right as most people at lucasarts didn't want to deal with the customer support the PC causes. Consoles are just easier to deal with as there are few to no support issues. He said it was common during his time working there to hear employees complain about the amount of support in the PC and wish for not having to support the PC. (if this is incoherent at all I apologize I'm very tired atm)
The final thing he said was that marketing controls everything at Lucasarts and that development etc gets little to no say about when things are released etc. To hear him speak, most of the issues we had with SWG fall squarely onto LucasArts shoulders and blaming SOE for much of it is a mistake. In the end, from what I'm seeing coming out of Lucasarts now, what he says doesn't suprise me. Disappoint me? yes but suprise, no.
As for MMO's that broke the mold, you do know that Ralph Koster (the man with the original vision for SWG) is making a new MMO right? I'd even bet that many of the mechanics that made the original SWG special will find their way in a more refined manner into his new game. I am watching for news about this rather avidly and praying he does create something which all of us can flock to. |

I've no idea who is behind it, but there are certainly and awful lot of rumors going around about a KOTOR MMO. Considering the current state of MMO's and what is coming out in the near future. I think a KOTOR MMO would be a poor move on Lucasarts part. But then they aren't releasing games for the PC anymore either so who the heck knows. All their recent announcements are xbox/ps3 only stuff. bleh. |

For those of you that think SWG 2 will be the answer.
SWG Veteran Refuge « Star Wars Galaxies 7/22/07 5:21:32 PM
Ya know, I don't see why so many people have shifted focus from SOE in this.
It's almost as if SOE had nothing to do with how poor the game was.
I think if anything we need to look how SOE has continued to publish exploit and bug ridden games. Yes Lucas Arts had issues, but I think SOE has more to do with many of the major faults of SWG and other games than people here seem to think. |

I'm looking at a Dwarven Ironbreaker or Hammerer Of course I also like the Human Warrior priest (that video just looked too cool :D )
I'm sure I'll end up playing both sides but I think I'll enjoy playing a choppa too. |

How do you think release will affect WoW? (poll) and not a flame war.
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 7/09/07 10:10:56 AM
I think that if Warhammer continues with their ideas of Public questing and less reliance on conventional groups of tank/healer/dps you'll see quite number of people leave WOW.
My guild is already talking about it because most of us are sick of the raid raid raid to get anywhere in WOW. |

What should be the Next Star Wars Online Game?
Rumor Room « Star Wars Galaxies 7/09/07 9:59:05 AM
KOTOR online would be a mistake. Kotor is a single player story driven game. MMO's are by their very nature not very story driven. You would lose too much of the KOTOR fun when you move to a MMO format. I think they could make KOTOR with a Neverwinter Nights type game where you can play with a small group of friends online. That would work but making a MMO out of it would probably ruin the KOTOR franchise. |

Originally posted by uttaus Lucas Arts didn't pick the time period SOE did. I remember reading one of the interviews with one of the developers who said they thought after the fact that it was probably a mistake. Game should have been New Jedi Order or pre movies Old republic. Unfortunately they picked a time period with no flexiblity for everything else they tried to do. AS for who's fault this game is, there's enough to go around, but mostly I blame SOE for not fixing exploits in anything resembling a timely matter and for creating new bugs/exploits every patch released. Further I blame SOE for releasing a game that didn't have functioning classes (bio engineer, droid engineer, pistoleer) etc etc. You should never release a game where the MAJOR professions/classes don't even work. All around SOE bungled SWG on so many levels that you can't even point to one thing. I will say that they got certain ideas right, entertainer profession (too bad you could afk macro it, how stupid was that?) And crafting with harvesters etc. The game was ambitous, I think too ambitious for what they delivered and instead of fixing things so that basic gameplay was working they focused instead too much on new technologies. It's a shame because if the game had been ironed out properly it probably would be the number 1 mmo out there. I don't trust SOE to do anything right considering how fundamentally screwed up SWG was at the management level, not even the production level. The game was just so incredibly mismanaged it confounds me how it is still around today. |

For those of you that think SWG 2 will be the answer.

Originally posted by T3hpwn I call BS on this one. I was one of the first to unlock the Jedi slot. Did in 7 professions (ya that was a dumb system good lord) Jedi were forced pvp WITH PERMANENT DEATH. Sorry no choice in the matter there. My first death occured while I was on Endor from gee go figure a client disconnect. Ya real fun. Next 2 were from some idiot who found me and called his friends into the clone center to catch me as I was rezzed gee thats fun. The problem with SWG originally wasn't the ganking, the TEF system or anything like that. It was the exploitation of players duping items, credits etc etc etc to the point that everything became unplayable. You can blame the failure of SWG on Lucas Arts all you want but to myself and most people who I know who quit, we got fed up with the lack of exploit fixes and the continous "a fix is coming" from the devs when in fact every patch the just created new ways to exploit the game. Somehow I haven't seen that that attitude of SOE's has changed and for that they've lost quite a number of potential customers, probably for good.

Poll:LotR the 3rd Failure of Turbine ?
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 7/09/07 9:18:33 AM
Originally posted by DubonEngevenGod how can anyone believe that Difficult = more mature.
If anything the people who are mature, 30-60 years of age don't have time to play the long grind games will be playing these games and forcing the direction of entertainment companies. Remember that these are the people who have the $$$. If you think games are going to continue to pander to the 15-25 yr old crowd, i'd have to go with you're in for a shock. The companies will chase the people who have an income at the expense of people who don't.
Which means more casual games, easier to get into play for a short time and then leave. You don't need to look any further than warhammeronline to see this trend with their public quests. |

is auto assault death a good thing for MMOs?
The Drive-In (General) « Auto Assault 7/19/06 9:59:38 AM
Everyone here is pretty much in agreement. It wasn't the cars or the setting that ruined this game in the end it was the monotonous gameplay. The translation of tank/healer/dps/mage to cars (horrible thing to do) and a crafting system that on one hand was phenomenal, also took too much time to get anywhere with, the lower levels become fairly hard to grind thru without the support of many people, the lack of a working auction/trade house really killed that.
In the end though, there just aren't enough people playing it, its amusing for a few hours, after that.. ehh.. no one has much patience anymore to generically grind. i'd even go so far that the game really felt like CoH did early on with a different setting. It wasn't the setting, the failure of this game is its generic "feel" of playing it. |

THE NEW ARMOR FOR 1.11.1 WHAT DO YOU THINK OF IT?

it may be that blizzard uses a counting system to up its numbers but given that, they still dominate this market currently.
Me, I'd like to see something new, different and with something near the numbers of WOW. I play at odd times and finding a zone with 4 poeple in it is depressing. Going to new games and hearing no one talk is even worse :( |

What game would you like to see, become a MMO?

I Don't think that bodes well, are there any active servers now? Everytime I log in, its dead created characters of all races and on a couple servers.
Poeple in the end are what make MMO's fun and this game is just lacking poeple. |
|

I know what your saying, i got a character up to level 26, saw nearly no one.. log in for some viscreral playing at destruction but without more poeple i might as well be playing a console game. The game really looks like its got a lot of potential, but with no one to play with .. bleh.. they did a major update and i didn't even know it until a couple weeks after the fact since I log in so rarely. You know, it almost begs the question. Are there too many MMO's out there? |
