edited: trading economy auction size (threads morped into debate about server size)
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 5/24/12 7:06:59 PM
That 650 number has nothing to do with server caps. It was a rough guesstimate made concerning WvWvW map capacity by various players in a thread. No such numbers have been given by Anet for server capacity, and obviously, anyone who knows much about MMOs will tell you that 650 would be a ridiculously low number for a full server cap. |

What class will you be come launch
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/30/11 2:47:59 PM
I have not played in any of the Betas (I want to start this journey fresh for a change), so my choice for main class has not been 100% finalized, but at this point I expect to start as a Trooper and take her in a combat medic direction. I generally always play a healer, and Jedi Consular and Trooper appeal to me the most from a roleplay stand point. Since I expect Consular to be the top healer class for the Republic, I am leaning Trooper. I find I enjoy walking the path lass taken. |

Actually, I have always come here to hear about MMORPGs...not MMOs. The site long ago deluted MMORPG.com down to MMO.com by covering many, many games that do not fit the definition of an MMORPG. Look at the games list and you will find MMOFPSs, MMORTSs, and many other bastardizations that have nothing much of an RPG in them. Why is the MMO so much more important than the RPG in MMORPG.com? If the site covers non-RPG MMos already, why not also cover equally non MMO RPGs? Unless you are like me and would like to see anything not strictly both MMO AND RPG removed from the site, I think turn about is fair and all... That is my stance anyway. |

37 is actually the current average age of gamers in the USA. So, while you personally may not play games when you reach that age...most people will. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: SDCC '11: 'Revan' Cover Art Unveiled
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/22/11 6:05:24 PM
Bad idea for many reasons, I agree. Not the least of which is that by setting in stone details about Revan, you invalidate the entire experience of the original game for anyone for whom those details don't match up. For example: All of us for whom Revan was female. We invested a lot of time, energy, emotion, and thought into a character that can no longer even exist in the Star Wars universe. Very discouraging. The only way to have correctly handled Revan was to keep this particular Sith Lord an unexplained myth, lost in the vagueries of the past. Too bad the almighty dollar won out. |

Sheesh people. It's the writer's personal opinion. As stated at the start of the article. It's not the Gospel or anything. Stop acting like he kicked your dog. Everyone has opinions, and they are usually all different. It's fine to post your own thoughts and lists in response, but what is with the anger? If your own faith in your personal opinions are so weak that they can only be justified by having the rest of the world agree with you on everything, you need some help. |

Originally posted by gobla Personally, I feel the better way to handle keeping class/race in line with lore is to enact penalties rather than disallow the combination. That way, anyone who wishes to play the rare exception to the cultural norm still can, but there is a stiff price to pay for doing so. Which will keep casual falunters of lore at bay. What type of penalties would depend on the game and mechanics of it. As well as how far outside cultural norms the combination might be. After all, these sorts of limitations within lore are purely about society, religion, and norms. They aren't absolutes, merely what is ascribed as normal in the society by most people (and also often the government and the laws). Just because the norm within Society A is not to worship demons, doesn't prevent someone from doing so. What prevents most people in Society A from worshipping demons (aside from peer pressure and parental and religious socialization and indoctrination) is fear of the consequences. So, enact consequences to race/class combinations that fall outside both cultural and phycial norms. Social consequences might be anything from social stat impairment, to unavailablity of NPCs and quests, to outright hostility by the guards, NPCs, and government of the home culture. Physical consequences to say a thin, weak elf becoming a barbarian weilding monsterous axes...well, those would be obvious. I don't like it when I am told I can't do something in a game. I prefer to have all realistic options available. But like in real life those options will sometimes have down-sides. That is to be expected. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: More for Explorers - The Codex
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/11/11 2:24:46 PM
I am an explorer by nature. I explore because I enjoy the process itself and the sense of wonder and discover I get from it. I do not need any tangible results or rewards for exploring, as that isn't why I do it. Yes, getting things is nice too, even if it's just a entry in my Codex. That really appeals more to the part of me that is an OCD collector however. I explore just because I like to explore. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Lead Combat Dev Makes the Case Against Skill Based Leveling
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/19/10 12:15:46 PM
His examples are completely valid, of course. However, using them as an argument for level/class systems versus skill systems makes no sense and is disingenious.
Games as a whole are full of exactly these sorts of unrealistic activities and illogical behaviours. You can't and won't get rid of them regardless of what system you use for your game. In addition, how are the unrealistic impositions on gameplay brought to the table by level-based class systems any different or more realistic? With most class systems you cannot change your class...what? I can't change my job? In real life this idea is laughable considering most people change jobs more often than pants these days. I am sorry, my love, but you can't help me build the deck for our house...I am a master carpenter and you are a novice, so you are of no use to me at all. Go find someone who is building a birdhouse to help. What? How are level-based grouping and experience systems at all realistic? These are just a couple of examples off the top of my head to illustrate that the argument made cuts through any and all game systems, regardless of your personal preferences. It's the nature of building limited simulations of realty versus reality itself. |

POLL: Voice acting or alien races?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 5/14/10 6:16:58 PM
Well, seeing as I am deaf...I don't care much about the voice acting. It's all about the subtitles anyway. :p I would obviously prefer more available races to play any day. That said, I do also want it to stay true to the lore and background. |

The saddest part is that most these annoying players calling everything "gay" and ruining your experience by acting 5 years old are likely 25. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: First New Species, Advanced Classes Revealed
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/13/10 8:42:43 PM
Answer is twiddle their thumbs.
Those of us who work in a game's art department don't work on code or other aspects of a game. We do art. Limiting the art options does not make other aspects of the game get any more attention. It doesn't work that way. Each job on a development staff needs skills specific to that job, like in any other industry. You can't transfer a texture artist or modeler to work on code or story, or combat etc. |

So far I am kinda liking Aika and SUN. But haven't played either for long yet. |

Revan's truth, revealed by Mr Erickson

Maybe because the computer game we are discussing is ABOUT that made up religion? Thus by discussing the characters IN the computer game, we ARE discussing the computer game.

Revan's truth, revealed by Mr Erickson
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 5/10/10 6:58:53 PM
Safety, dear...how exactly is discussion of the story aspect of the upcoming video game Star Wars: The Old Republic somehow inappropriate and not a part of discussion the video game itself, when the video game developers specifically are marketing the game's story feature as a major selling point?
Video games are made up of dozens of aspects. One of those aspects tends to be story. In this case, it is a major aspect according to the studio making the game. As such it is just as valid a part of discussing that said game as talking about combat, crafting, or UI. How you fail to see that boggles the mind. |
