Cool :)  An even cooler (aka 'cold') video from last year:  http://youtu.be/P33aoWulJUY  LotRO under snow.

And from the thread you mentioned, a perfect shot for the arriving end of this 2014:  http://lotro.talonsoffreedom.org/images/ScreenShot01353.jpg  Happy New Year everyone!

(ok, it's still a couple more hours left, but just in case I'll be offline  )

Some nice scenery in that video, the game does snow and ice really well. Though I had to laugh at the character playing in game instruments to the music, it was a bit cheesy.

That fireworks picture is a good one too. I'm guessing that SweetFX is used to saturate the colours a bit.

But then if you play the game long enough, those cheesy musical annimations fit the game very well...  And tell me, what other game has a music system that actually lets you play your own compositions...

at the right distance, i don't think the human eye can tell the difference between HD and 4K, at least I cannot

Something we can agree on.

20/20 vision can't distinguish 4k from 1080p at a normal distance.

http://carltonbale.com/does-4k-resolution-matter/

Nice read,  and it shows the bennefit of having a 4k 40" monitor over a 40" HD monitor, when you sit at 2 feet away from it....  Its the same pixel size as a 20" HD monitor...   As i said before, its the combination of HD and huge size that gives the most benefit

i also realised that sitting in front of a screen and not being able to see the left and the right side at the same time adds a lot to the immersion..  ( i think a curved screen would even add more to that feel)

http://youtu.be/6y_GEvObFRQ

this video shows the 4k performance of the top graphics cards with the most demanding games at their highest settings, its totally acceptable, and the much cheeper GTX 970 keeps up with the more expensive competition very well...

(as a side note, current MMO's are much less GPU power hungry, which makes them perform much much better)

almost all current games support 4k ressolution

As nice as 4K is, I really hope that big strides are made with Oculus Rift type technology. The level of immersion you can potentially create with a fully filled field of view is much greater than any number resolution/monitor combo you can devise.

I'd have to agree with this. We should hopefully see something more with VR in 2015 and for the price, VR will be more immersive for much less.  $1000 or so just for a monitor or $350 for an Oculus Rift?

I personally will be waiting for 4k to become more affordable and practical.  I'm just not sold on the Rift or any of the VR that are coming out.  I'm not saying their bad or not worth it just a personal preference .

Vr is far from ready for release...  It makes you dizzy ( tried de Oculus several times with a friend ) and there is no good controll schemes yet, you cant use traditional controllers, but need to use some kind of VR gloves.... Which are not supported by older games, there is no backwards compatibillity in games....  You just cant use mouse and keyboard effectively with the oculus rift..

your video you posted above is not really rresentive anymore, it was made in June, since that time the top graphics cards in sli have i proved the 970 wasnt available back then....  On top of that, 4k is entirely different on a 40" then on a 22" monitor... No small pixels, but just lots and lots of details...and about the 60fps requirement, even thats highly discusible, i think stable above the 30 fps is more then enough for a convincing MMO...

the whole point of my post was to proof that 4k gaming is now.... And that 4k gaming on a 40" monitor blows you away withouth the dizzyness of a VR system...

Ok no offense but your post does not prove 4k is now. In my post it states it a year or two out just like the TVs. Sure if you have enough money to piece it together it might look nice.  But 4k gaming is not now...come back in a year or two.  Btw I'm pro 4k and will be picking 4k over vr I'm just not putting the carriage before the horse...

Well, i have 4k gaming going on here in my study room, i told you the configuration, i told you the specs, i told you the performance, ...      Its here at my home, and it works awesome.... Point is 4k gaming works better on a large screen then on small screens, where it does not add as much ....

Spend €2000 euro and you have a 4k gaming beast with a 40" monitor that works like a dream...  Sure its not cheep and its not mainstream, but it works for me...

I guess its come down in price, was definitely 595 TP last I played.

Point is: they charge their subscribers for a fairly standard feature, and they didnt even take the time to do it right, making it something you have to equip as opposed to a menu option or even an NPC toggle is poor design.  At least they finally lowered it past the point of the monthly stipend, but its something that a subscriber should never have to use their stipend on in the first place.

It's definitely 100 now - I bought one last week for 50.

Not all games offer an experience disabler, and don't forget that once you have this you have it permanently, whether you're subscribing or not.

It should be a buff or something rather than an equipped item, sure, but that's not an issue with the revenue model.

Thats why subscribers get 500 tp free each month, to buy stuff like this...   You are making an issue of a non issue here, just so you dont have to admit your example was wrong..

I received this lovely 4k monitor (40") as a christmass gift...  It was meant for my work as system admin, allowing me to have everything one could ever want to monitor on a single desktop... and still have a window open to monitor the forums of these boards..

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/philips-to-launch-bdm4065uc-40-uhd-4k-monitor.html

But then as an offtime gamer, i decided to buy a couple of Nvidia GTX 970 graphics cards ( total of $650 )  just to find out that there is no way back... the system with a fast i7 and 32Gb of RAM is running all MMO´s currently on the market at max settings in 4K..

I tested ; ESO, LOTTRO, GW2, TSW, DCUO, Neverwinter Online, EQ2....    And they all ran fine far above 30fps with all settings to the max..

Its incredible, gaming in 4K on a 40" monitor.... and there really is no way back for me, incredible immersion  and it can be done for just above  2k $

LOTRO certainly has the worst payment model of any AAA game.

Here is an example:

LOTRO has a lot of content as you level, and games like WoW and EQ2 offer you ways to lock your level so you don't outlevel other content.

LOTRO also offers this option-at a cost of 6 bucks per character you want to do it on, even as a subscriber.  It even takes away an inventory slot to do so.

Good game, shit model.

No way, the item is account bound, and can be reused...  I certainly can live with that

I think they should disquallify all accounts created after the poll was up for voting...

My two favourite MMOs of this moment in the final, with 7 years under its belt and so many good memmories however i can not do anything else but vote for LOTRO..

but if ESO does as it promisses, that might change over the upcomming few months

Well I saw this thread and thought I would give the game a go. I've not even got in the game yet and I'm already not impressed - the installer says "game ready to play", but then it loads another window and starts downloading more files. I know it's only a little thing, but already feel lied to...

Also, the payment structure of this game looks like a complete and utter mess. I read earlier in this thread that by subbing you'll have no restrictions. But on the VIP subscription page, there's this small print: "*Helm's Deep™, Riders of Rohan™, Rise of Isengard™, Mines of Moria™ and Siege of Mirkwood™ are not included" - so it seems subbing doesn't unrestrict all content, and looks more like a version of Rift's Patron system.

The wording in the copy puts me off too - for the quad expansion it says "all expansions for xxx", but this doesn't include Helms Deep, so it's not "all expansions" but rather a portion of them.

I know I may be being a bit picky, but after dancing with Trion with ArcheAge I'm very cautious about the games I play. I do not want to play a game that'll be riddled with extra DLC, or parts locked off unless I fork out more and more money on top of a subscription.

It's free to try, so I'm going to try it, but my initial view of the game is it's a mess.

Actually its the best F2P system of any MMo out there...   As long as you realise nothing in this world is free..

You get the first 30 levels for free, allmost unrestricted, during that time you can earn ingame store points for those little things you need...

And after level 30 you need to pay for the content, weather in expansion packs, or questpacks.   Which actually seems rather fair to me..  If you buy all the content you need, there is no reason to subscribe.

If you want to play the whole game for free, be prepared to invest a whole lot of time, as you need to do all the little deeds and other things that give you free storepoints... but it is still possible.. Just takes dedication and an awfull lot of time.

Otherwise, be prepared to pay a little fee once in a while... nothing bad, as long as you realise its not a free game.

Sadly with your current mindset, i guess your game experience is doomed to fail... just try to enjoy the game step by step, get pas the intro and venture into the world enjoying the quests and story it has to tell...

I dont share the OP's views.

Without elaborating needlessly, all I will say is that this game is getting gutted from a MMORPG to a single player game with the added benefits (not for the players, but for warner brothers) of a cash shop and/or a monthly sub.

The lotro that I played and loved is gone and all the friends that I made here have moved on as well. I will remember this game for what it was and good luck to those who still play it for what it is.

LOTRO was never very focused on groupig anyway. A lot of people enjoyed it for the levelling experience, the quests, lore and to see the world. It has always suffered from mediocre group content and very few raids etc.

Did you ever play it when it first released? The opposite is true. It was made very much with grouping in mind including the unique Fellowship Maneuvers and it had some pretty damn good raids.

Later on, after it went F2P, they did go with the solo flow and changed a lot of the former group content to give you a solo option, but in the beginning it was pretty obvious they wanted you to group and encouraged it heavily.

I played it at launch and it was definitely not mae with grouping in mind. There was group content but the vast majority of it (90% or more) was solo content.

Dungeons

the main story book quests

a lot of open world areas

all required grouping....  Thats more grouping oriented then any other PVE AAA+ ( with maybe the exception of Vanguard) since the release of WoW.

to advance, grouping was a requirement,

It was at launch. A few of the epic book quests required groups to complete. Even the non-instanced group content required a group.

Now you can select a solo instance or your given a buff stone for the open world stuff. IMO the introduction of Mirkwood and skirmishes killed the game for me.

It does have a huge open world however it seems Turbine has turned it's back on doing anything with it. Especially the Shadow of Angmar stuff.

You had great raids then aswell. Helegrod, The Rift. Moria introduced Filikul, Vile Maw. Loads of 6 man fellowship stuff on top of that.

Have to agree with macwood and SlyLoK.

Much of the grouping content scales to player level and is still availalbe...  Seems they will add some new grouping and raid content in this years updates....  They might stick at level 100 for some time and add some progressive group/raid content for that level, and offcourse more story/books/skirmishes/epic battles...

Everquest Next will be a mix of sandbox and themepark features, yet still leaning more towards themepark... I would not consider it a sandbox

I had to report this unwanted poll, i dont think its fair to www.mmorpg.com forums that players create this before the real final.... its undesired and unwanted

Also maybe its just me but it sounds to me the primary point of your post is to belittle MOBAs and their fans - maybe I am mistaken but that is how it comes across to me.

Its not an unneccesary forum, on top of that creating  specific MOBA as well as RPG, FPS and RTS forums clearly specifies that these games are not MMORPG´s but have some form of relationship

Plus, the butchery of lore? Come on! PJ already did it with those crappy " "Hobbit" "(two of those just for a measure) movies.

Besides, it all depends how broadly are you willing to look at it. Why? Because you most likely DON'T KNOW what transpired in the background of books! Maybe LoTRO things? Maybe bfme things? Maybe neither? Who knows such things anyhow.

The same applies for those made up parts of the Hobbit(yet the b brothers don't get five minutes screen time! Oh and wtf is with Gloin??? He is the fkkin father of Gimli! Please DO feel free to mention him!). They could've happened. Or they might've not. One thing is for certain-they had no place in "the Hobbit". Perhaps they should've saved them for spin offs? A series? /meh who cares...

Still, RKs are a lore break. There's no other way around them...

its a game mate... and it was never meant to be an exact copy of the tolkien lore, still yet it comes close, and i am pretty much sure, that tolkien himslef would have loved to walk around with a character in the virtuall representation of his world.

Lore purists in general dont understand that movies require a whole different approach then just copying every letter of a book in a movie, same goes for games.

The current ingame lore and stories are far beyound anything i found in any other MMO´s so far..  espescially combined with the tools that Turbine uses to tell them.

I have a life-time subscription account which I bought when the EU servers were still under CodeMaster's license. Back then I'd agree with OP that the game was the best and unique MMO out there. But over time the unique part kinda left the game and it became extremely generic. The only thing still worth to mention for LotRo is the story and lore, though the latter more and more becomes a rape of Tolkien's legacy.

Needless to say, despite having a life-time subscription, I haven't touched LotRo the last 18 months or so. To me it's no longer worth to play :(

Generic?

skirmishes

big epic battles

mounted combat

all very unique parts in MMO worlds, ...  I think you just grew tired of the MMO, which happens when you play them to long... They become stale on you...

I was in closed beta, bought a pre-order, am a founder (still have my cloak and the other stuff), and I stopped playing seriously when the game went free to play to only do the story lines. The quality had started to drop before though already anyway.

At release, LOTRO was a good theme park MMO despite having one of the worst combat of the genre. Nowadays, the game is just aged, totally lacks any kind of quality maintenance by Turbine, and the good parts can no longer compensate for the crappy combat and other flaws the game has.

To bad you base your opinion on six years ago, the first years after release the combat imrpoved dramatically making much much more fluent.    And they actually kept improving and adding more and better content over the years..  Graphics seem timeless, and annimations still are on par..

Had potential.  If it wasn't for the forced storyline (i.e., locking zones until you perform quests), I'd be in it right now.  If a zone is too high level for my character, then let me walk into it at my own risk.  Do not lock me out because I didn't have the patience to sit through a series of boring

Point taken, this is not your game, its all about the story line, and all those stories are wrapped in a multitiude of mechanics to add diversity..  If you dont like reading books, dont play this game, because this game tends to feel like a book featuring you..  Its a themepark very much

I really want to try this game and thank you so much for this post. Every time I convince myself to give it a fair chance I go to the forums and read horror story after horror story about Turbine and the Devs. Yeah I know; "Every MMO forum is like that!" but the fact of the matter is there is some compelling evidence on them.

Such as "If you come from any other MMO, you'd have to be pretty damn determined to fight through the clunky gameplay to reach the goodness that is this game."

"Riders of Rohan ruined the game for many! Mounted combat great in theory but bombed."

"Punishing game for anyone new to the game without friends and isn't a part of a well established guild."

"Isengard was and remains a abomination."

"Turbine is falling prey to the entitlement generation (thought who want everything but do not want to do anything to get it)."

"Free to play quickly turned to pay to win in the moors."

"Radiance ruined the game and created a divide in the community."

"Dead servers."

I don't know what any of the above stuff means, but it seems consistently complained about overall. However one thing that is praised is the story which is the main thing I care about. I also trust you judgment and almost always agree with what you say, so I will be checking it out.

Thanks again for this thread.

 Its free, just some advice

- make sure to pick a populated server

- make sure to join a friendly leveling guild, with helpfull people, they tend to be all over the place

- take the stories step by step, leveling is the game and not the road to endgame

It is a nice game that is sadly outdated on every front.

Story? Swtor/TSW
World? wow/eso
Combat? Everything
Animations? Everything

As is evident, there is very little reason to play LoTRO besides the IP and community. If I were to suggest a game to LoTRO fans, it'd be ESO. Maybe swtor, but that one is SF so...

One mustn't forget that if you want a themepark game, there are 2 HUGE games out there(wow/eq2).

With all this said, if only they updated combat(to feel more responsive) and animations(lol horrible! :P )

Story, sure swtor and tsw have a nicer wrap around the story parts, but the lore of this game is much much deeper if you tend to read.

world, nothing beats the scenery and open world feel of Lotro, and i mean no single MMO comes close to this feel except Maybe Vanguard.

Combat is as good as it gets in tab targetting MMOs personally i think minstrell is the most fun healing class in any tab targetting MMO, and Warden is the most fun class in MMO history...

Annimations are still acceptable even after 7 years, and comming from me, that left a lot of games for bad annimations, it means a lot.  Maybe you only played at release, because back then annimations where stiff.... But my hobbit warden annimations are spot on and one of the reasons i love this class

I tought most people have forgotten about how good this game actually is for players like me that are into lore and stories...   I think this was the first game that put story so high on their agenda, and set the scene for the newer story based games like ESO, TSW and SWTOR.  And yet still it feels like a unique place..

here is why i keep returning to this game..

- even after 7 years the graphical art style is still convincing

- the scenery is still the best in any MMO, traveling the lands has so many beatifull sights

- despite many storie areas and dungeon being instanced, it really feels like a huge open world, more then any other themepark game

- mounted combat, best in any MMO

- big epic battles, being part of mass combat in PvE feels unique

- skirmishes...  Quick group content..

- fun dungeons and raids, very diverse, many of them scaling in level

- housing, still one of the best systems, part of the sociall system

- Quests and lore, having a story paralel to the big events in the books, makes you really feel part of the tolkien lore

- Society, is unbelievable, no other game has so many player organised events

- the music system, and people performing in the game world

- all those little fun things implemented in the world, like chicken runs

- Magic in the Tolkien world feels quite rare compared to other fantasy MMOs, as it should be...

- Regular content updates, like 3 major updates over the last year..

- Class diversity, all classes feel and play totally different, with unique mechanics for every class. Adding to the replayabillity

- so much story and quests, that you need several characters to see and play it all

- monster play, i love fighting other players this way, it does not break the worlds immersion

yes, its a leveling game, not an endgame game currently, but there are people everywhere, espescially with the new class recently released, level 1 to 50 zones are booming.  And while the lore is not totally true to tolkiens books, i am sure Tolkien himself would have loved to play a character in this game build around his very own world.

Yet the story is allready in the 3rd book, and progressing towards the probable Mordor Climax, which got me wondering what will happen after that, but then thats another discussion entirely.  So far they they succeeded to make new content feel fresh every time, at allmost every update the game gets a new push into a different direction with new things to experience.

as a game hopper, i really hope that i can allways keep returning to this game and feel like getting home..  Its currently the only MMO that feels closer to a virtuall world then to a game
