was wondering. you can't use the same name for your game. so , the name, who owned it? Interplay , Atari?

Actuallly the name neverwinter comes from the forgotten realm campaign and its just a virtual town. Wizards of the coast is owner of the IP, and can allow anyone a contract to produce forgotten realms  games, as long as noboddy has an exclusive contract. Since Neverwinter excisted long time before the irst Neverwinter nights game, i dont see a problem.

Long time i have been hoping this would be the game to bring back the roleplying into my mmorpgs again. The lore, characters and stories of the vastest fantasy realm available should be able to do so. But despite some really nice stories and lots of lore.. And seeing some of the best foundry quests, i just cant get attached to my charcter.  Why?  Probably because a mix of things, like not being able to choose the camera position i love ( just behind the shoulder), and voice acting is very dissapointing, combined with the graphics style thats nice but unaspiring. On top of that the characters dont need to make any meaningfull choices. The game feels like the ultimate themepark..

But, ... ,  its fun. Its arcade, the combat feels fresh and crispy, even with all abillities rooting me in place, there are some bloody awesome foundry missions, and those things will only be getting better as time lows by.  Where i was hoping for depth, i found a lovely arcade style hack and slash dungeon crawler. And its fun, and even challenging.

there are some great stories in the oundry, but sadly i have been spoiled by swtor voice acting, and the oldfashioned textwindows have lost most of their charm for story telling. Sadly the awesome player made story content failec to charm me, however the combat and scenery where fun enough to make me want more..

So what about PvP?   Its simple, if they can add an orriginal PvP game , like a 3d version of L.o.L.  Where a party can choose their own patrolls and such, or something with several of their companions involved, if hey can add somethingorriginal and fun, they might even become a new cult game..

there is a lot of work to be done, but by the end of this year the game might have a true cult of  followerz.

I was comapining a lot, how the characters in NEverwinter seemed to have lost all freedom possible in 3th and 3.5 edition DnD. And i blamed Cryptic for it.  All the freedom of creation available in DDO seemed to be cut from the game..

Untill i read the 4th edition player handbook, which showed me that Cryptic actually delivered a system close to the PnP version of DnD 4th edition.  So basically all of the complains of DDO and oldfashioned PnP DnD players like me should be directed at Wizards of the Coast and not at cryptic.  Reading the players handbook showed that cryptic actually did a very good job at sticking to the rules..

My sith sorcerer was a blast,  great story (espescially the end of chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2) awesome companion, fun combat, awesome healer....

Untill at level 4 i got a AoE lighting spell, channeled and with not cooldown... There is almost no other healing then to use anything else in PvE.  It killed the fun for me.

I think any class that has a full rotation of AoE is a shame..

Its the same old thing just in different graphics

And you got all that ni 4 minutes? Figuring it takes longer to get out of the tutorial...which I agree is sorta lame.

Not saying like it or hate it, but don't insult something without having a fuller picture.

Same start as usual...

make characer.... login.... go to the nearby npc..... then just quest after quest... all with just new graphics.

I dont need to see more I got the jist :P

So you don't like mmorpg's then? Becasue that's how 90% of them work. This game has never pretended it was going to be anything different. Why are you even on this site?

Precisely...

Having quests and character geberation does not make a bad mmorpg...

Tough so far i must conclude that the quests and story depth falls miles short of SWTOR  which is still leading, and combat is less spectacular then other action oriented games like GW2, but somehow  its still fun, espescially the mob ai adding much to the picture.

if the community fixes the foundry, and creates some awesome background stories, it will be a very very fun experience.

Tough choice. I personally like the commando who is heavier armored.

But then the armor is mostly looks, just heavy armor alone does not add much as defence

what you want sir is a D&D cleric.

and i dont blame you as it is one of my two faverite classes to play.

But only in ddo and not in Neverwinter, as neverwinters cleric is full caster..  In ddo however i had some very awesome mellee healers.

On top of that, one has to conclude that the old dnd rules 3 and 3.5 allowed for most freedom, you could litterally make any type of classbuild you want..

Inlove to play healers that  need to be in the thick of battle to be efficient at healing. Not like the wow paladin that turned intoo a backline caster when he was in a healingrole, but more like the vanguard disciple and the AoC Bearrshaman.

Sadly not many games offer such healing classes.... None of the recently released games does... Hoping Neverwinter will add such a lass in the future, but i dont think they must be a priority right now...

Anyone else loving mellee healers and hating the fact they are so rare?

Many games have them, including the game you mentioned, WoW.

Off the top of my head, I can think of warrior priest form WAR, Monk form WoW (new), heck even Paladins (the class you crapped on) need to melee strike to regen mana.

In the vanilla wow years things where different and Monks where never heard of..

As per is expected in any MMO now-a-days, the server came up about an hour and a half late since the pathcer was screwed.  Well, according to them, the company that hosts the patcher service.

No biggie, came up pretty quick.

Get into the game?  Well, this is why they BETA launch instead of calling it a full launch.  The servers are so pounded right now, 90% of the population can barely move (ok, just a lot of ping-pong and lag).  Again, kinda expected sadly.

Hopefully by tonight they'll fix it *shrug*.  Personally I have nothing invested in the game (didn't even like closed BETA much) so I'm not mad (nor would I be anymore, I've sadly resigned myself to all online games launching poorly).

WOAH! You should see the chat though; it's like BARRENS circa 2006.

SO! For anyone that didn't know, OPEN BETA IS HERE!

Its worse then Barrens 2006, as this is a free to play game, many people only logged in to trashtalk the game,  with all the lag, they got a lot of support from unnowing people...

It was officially worse then Barrens in 2004/2005... it really hurt my ears.

Camera controll is not in...  you can use the [B] key and get intoo an observation mode which allows you to zoom in and out, but this can not be used in combat.

Took them about an hour and a half to get things running, obviously the webserver used for the background information of the launcher.

Sadly as we got intoo the game itselves, we got extremely bad lag, pings of over 2000ms from overhere in europe..

Its obvious to me that they just could not handle the numbers, i can only advise people to stay away for a few more days untill rumble has cleared.. Numbers must have been overwhelming..

Basically with their prices of $200 and $60 for early access they failed to spread the access of new players...

Seems like a classic example of underestimated launch  crowds...  By the way, it launched at Eu main prime play time..

There is a reason they launch in open beta state, and not with a true release.

I like roleplaying games where i can be whatever healer i want to,like sniper healer, martial artist healer ,1 handed blunt healer or pistol user healer or unarmed healer who uses DOTs  but sadly theres no such games anymore :/ Anarchy online used to be like that.

I think you hit the nail on the head...

We´re all wayting for a game that lets you design your own classes from scratch, just spend your points in skilltrees and see where it gets you...

But developers are to much worried about artificial ballance, my opinion is to give the players freedom and let them ballance things themselves... such a free system allows people to create what they want, or build something to counter the flavor of the month builds..

But back on trak, there are not that many true mellee healers, (Yes disciple and Warrior priests in WAR where awesome too) which makes me a sad panda.  Offcourse in EQ2 some healers have mellee builds, and obviously inf FF XI you could mix and max everything, and in GW2 you could have healing builds but no true healers..

Just lets hope some developers read this..  And get some fun ideas from it.

I've stopped playing any mmorpg with item mall, whcih kinda meant I've stopped playing any mmoprg at all.   It's rather interesting to watch from side-lines in between RL and playing other genres and types of games.

Go  back to wow, thats still your best option... The last fully subscription mmo left....

There have been games that allowed it but I hav never agreed with casters being ale to move and cast.  Call me old fashion, but casting a spell of any kind should require a phrase and/or gestures to be performed perfectly and that would require total concentration.  If you are moving you are not fully concentrating on casting the spell.  That's all my opinion though.

But, we are talking about "games" here and to each there own.  If the OP wants a game where he can run and cast, then have fun playing that game.  We don't all like the same things after all.

Movement during casting of arcane spells should be limited, it is part of the lore just like casting spells in melee combat is risky (attacks of opportunity). Divine spells are usually less restricted but also should be less offensive.

In D&D this is a balance thing, arcane spells hurt a lot more than anything else but wizards are very easy to kill (and everyone go for them first).

I think Cryptic have made a misstake here though, D&Ds ruleset is not a great base for action MMO combat and they actually nerfed movement here so it is even worse than in D&D.

I think they should have gone a bit closer to GW2 and TERA, or they should have kept the D&D rules a bit closer to the P&P mechanics.

It is still something you get used to but it will feel a bit slow and clumsy to Tera and GW2 players in the beginning and it might turn many off. NWNs strenght is the foundary, not really the combat mechanics.

Think they did an okay job at translating the dnd pnp 4e rules to a more actionbased system. And combat is still fun espescially in PvE because of the very good mob ai.  For Pvp however themovement  restrictions and rooting of all classes even mellee classes works strange and unnatural, removing a lot of the promissed action based fun. They really missed the nail with their hammer here.

And about movement while casting, i still think vanguard hit the nail right on the head, it was just the perfect....

Is there really any rules of D&D or name is used only to attract more public?

Its fully based on 4th edition D&D rules... actually almost 1 on 1, except for the hit rolls.

But then many old time roletime players loath the 4th edition rules as they take away much of the freedom that many pnp players love so much..

Looks pretty good to me.  The fact that the keys are tradable in addition to being able to buy zen with in game currency you earn by playing makes this a relatively great item for them to have to 1) make money and 2) make it so it's available to everyone who wants it.

It's good to have a little in game casino at times, so long as the only way to get it isn't just through the cash shop, but through other venues as explained in your video.  I'd say it's miles better than the system in Guild Wars 2 whereby the keys are bind when picked up, but that's probably more so an issue of convienence than anything else since gold can buy gems which can buy keys.

Interested in the bars you get as a side bonus, just in case you grind for weeks to buy dozens of boxes but don't get the one thing you wanted.  It's kind've like WoW's Justice/Valor system back when it was more valid in raids in that after so many failures you can just pick what you want after all is said and done.

That is indeed very generous of them, as they didn't have to do that (and instead just keep on milking on the fact you want that item).

But then in GW2 the chests dont contain anything usefull at all, and i stopped opening them, putting both chests and keys in my vault.

Ok I was hopeing for for a action game, dungon crawler. But I totaly hate the stand still to attack or cast play style of neverwinter.

If we could move and fight like in most other mmo's it would add so much fun and action to the game.

Its prety much a game braker for me. Ohh well back to gw2 best of luck all.

im curious as to what you mean by most?  im no expert but i've tried quite a few mmo's.  off the top of my head i can think of 1 mmo that allows for movement and combat at the same time.  in "most" mmo's i've played casting roots you in place.

Its not only casting, its also mellee attacks..

Its really bad design, GW2 has shown that its possible to have both movement while still having great annimations.

I also loved the way vanguard handled movement while casting, cutting your movement speed in half, making you walk instead of run.

Every game has its weak points, this is among the very weakest points of this game.

Personally, respeccing isn't a basic feature. Too many MMOs have just made you feel entitled to constantly change your spec.

Some weight to your decisions is kind of refreshing.
There are much better ways of making those decisions count. Locking out respecs with a 5$ mark will prevent most people from experimenting which will at the end result in another meta-game cookie cutter type experience where before you even pick what you like you go online and get the spec for it.

Respecs should cost XP, in game currency, diminishing returns, cost increase with level(skill or overall) etc. but 5$ per respec? that's pushing it a bit too far, i love playing out new and strange builds, experimenting with abilities that are not picked up in most cases and finding new play styles that i might enjoy. However I'm not going to spend 50-100$ per class to do so on top of all the other RWC transactions that the game forces or requires you to use.

Also i really don't see this as adding weight to my decision, it's just restricts you based on the amount of money you can and or willing to spend. This is to me is a bad design model not something that is interesting, i loved the no respec policy of TL2, but this seems to me as nothing more than a cheap money grab.

I was really looking for NWN, but the 5$ respec and the fact that there is no sub way out of it is really keeping me from buying/playing it. So far the "astral crystals" drop rate and their exchange rate do not seem to be enough to allow you to just live with it.

/Sigh.

No, it's nauseating actually. This is basic character development - the best part of any MMO or RPG - that is being barred behind a price tag. This is what is wrong with gaming now. Every turn they can charge, they will.

Both of you are forgetting that you can respec by either pay the 5 dollars straight up, or earn in game currency, aka Astral Diamonds (AD) and use the ingame exchange center to trade in your astral diamonds for Zen (cash shop currency).  It will only take you about 150k - 250k ADs worth to get the 500 zen for the respec.  Guardians founder pack starts with 600,000 AD, and you can make anywhere from 25 - 50k astral diamonds per day by doing daily quests or events that happens hourly.

On top of this, the respec is really not necessary.  Each skill can go up to rank 3, and it costs 1 point per rank.  Each rank only increases the damage by 10% or duration depending on the skill.  You get about 60 skill points total and each class has around 27 skills/passive/daily powers, so a total of 81 point possibilities.  This means you'll only be 20 or 21 points that you won't be maxing out each skill.  You literally cannot mess up the skill tree, only if you really try hard to make it bad.  There are just some passives or daily powers that you won't like, probably won't ever use, and won't need to waste your points on them, or you just get rank 1 of it to have it just in case you need it at some point, but don't need to max it out.  10% damage increase isn't going to win/lose you the game, nor is spending 5 days getting the diamonds needed to buy a respec token if it really is that serious of a problem and you don't want to spend 5 dollars.

The point is that there shouldn't be that option to begin with.No game should charge me for basic functionality that every single worthwhile MMO costs out in-game. The real price option shouldn't be there.

Get a grip of yourself, the game is free, and noboddy is telling you that you need to respec...

Those people spend a lot of money building a game, they need to get a chance to make some of it back out of the players wallets, dont you agree?

Nothing in this world comes for free, ever, remember that...
