Wellcome to ESO, where skill is required to make things work for you...   even at higher levels, certain builds just dont work well...  thats something that comes with the system, many skills are very situational or just shine in a certain setup..

Be prepared to kiss the floor in this game, its easy to overpull and attackt adds

Whats the current state of this game?

what has improved since release?

would it be a good time to return?

how is the player created content comming along?

is there any good PvP going on?

is there enough grouping pve content and is it not to hard to find groups?

By law software developers are required to provide you reasonable access to any digital property you have purchased.

I thought there already was a lawsuit in the US courts based on that premise.  People who paid for MMO clients no longer have access to their software due to the company shutting down the MMO.  This wouldn't apply to most free-to-play MMOs but there are still plenty that charged for client downloads at least when they first released.

OP:  They don't have any legal ground to prevent people from running privately-owned servers as long as the servers don't violate copyright law.  From what I understand, the server code is almost always created from scratch due to the difficulty of obtaining the code from the company.

Define reasonable...

I ersonally think 10 years of access is still reasonable for MMOs...  somewhere some judge should have an opinion on this...

I personally see nothing wrong with the genre. Right now I can think of at least 6 games I would love to be able to play all at the same time! There are many others I could play and be happy with as well.

Everyone keeps beating up the genre, and comparing games from the past. Many of those games are still there to play. I hear epic tales of DAoC and how superior it was, but no one plays it. To me it's the players, not the genre.

When WoW released there where 2 games i wanted to play, WoW and Eq2..

currently there are 10 games, that i regularly play, and i like them all, switching between them....

I have learned what parts of MMOs i like most, and so i decided to enjoy those parts

Did we see any update on the combat system...  So far i dislike it because of the extemely low number of active skills on your bar combined with a CD system.....

Did you mean how Landmark is right now or what has been said about EQN? Landmark did add a third ability to each weapon but nothing else so far. As far as EQN there will be 12 active abilities at one time. 4 skills of weapon set one, 4 skills of weapon set two (hotswap) and the four interchangeable abilities that are tied to categories in the class you're currently playing.

Having a CD system may seem off-putting but that combined with a resource pool means that spamming abilities should be inadvisable. This is needed because of the reticle/action system they went with. We'll have to see the end result.

Eso has a resource system withouth CDs.... It works great...

it prooved to me that there is no reason to have cds

I left this game before craglorn came, I left because of the AoE caps bullshit, I have 1.3k hours on GW2 and I can't play another zerg fest AoE spam, did they change or fix something about that or even actually said WHY they had AoE caps? Hows the rest of pvp? It was pretty shitty and unbalanced when I left.

Did they fix the horrible optimization issues? Like stuck forever on loading screen, walls not loading properly, game lagging a lot after some time inside cyrodiil? Did they change that fucking cowards skill bolt escape that made sorcs impossible to catch up unless specifically built for speed?

Did they fix the guilds and trading? That shit was horribly clunky. What about culling? Still pretty much a solo game on PVE? Anything else new on pve besides craglorn? I enjoyed the class roles but tanking was pretty much useless and people could go withouth it and clear it faster by going mad dps and aoe

Yeah man there were a lot of bugs at launch. Not any more. There never was culling. There was lag in Cyrodiil because 1000 people there were too many. They lowered the cap to about 750. ESO has always had awesome fps optimization except for 2 weeks during 1.2. 60 fps on good comps. Guild traders all over., booming economy. Stamina builds are good now. Bolt escape was nerfed months ago. New trails scaling dungeons ect.

Yeah you must have left the first month ;)

I think this sums it up perfectly, the game has arived where it should have been at release....  Its a very fun place, both in PvE as in PvP.

My patch was about 13 GB last week, i also tought it was redownloading... But while patching it seems the foles to be replaced are rather big
SOE hit the nail on the head with a lot of things in this game...    There is no game with as much content and progression as this game, and the fanbase is still playing and very very loyal

Fully voiced, much more immersive...   For me there is no way back..

however, i dont mind subtitles...

I think these two things are what keeps people playing MMOs

while i think graphics, combat gameplay, quest and story quallity, social interface and the quallity of all those other gamemechanics are what makes people play and like the game in the first place, .... They are at least as important as Progreeion and collecting and required to make people play the game..

but progression and collecting make most people stick to a game

progression like:

- gear progression

- character progression

- story progressiom

- dungeon and raiding progression

- area progression ( exploration)

- crafting progression

- housing progression ( building your own castle and outfitting it)

- PvP progression

- archievements

- guilprogression

- rankings

while collecting things like:

- gear

- resources

- colections ( like in eq2)

- titles

- archievements

- housing items and trophies

- skills or skillpoints

- friends

in general men prefer progression while many woman prefer collecting, why?  Well men used to be hunters, while woman used to be collectors in prehistorical times.   Men and Woman prefer different things in games, yet both can be comforted in one MMO if developers realise how to put both those in one package..

as soon as there is no progression left, or nothing left to collect, people will start leaving the game.  Sure some will stick for the social part but only for some time because they feel an obligation towards their friends and the community...

Dont get me wrong, progression should not come for free,  there should be a challenge, because if you dont have to do anything for it, it will feel hollow and pointless.  But there should allways be ways how to further progress in a game within reach of the players.

how hard is that ?  Seems many developers do not realise this...

Seems landmark is really moving forward from a graphically hugely improved version of minecraft to testing grounds for EQ next..

I recently tried the game again and found it to be really amazing except for one thing- the combat!  People have talked about it before but it's just too slow to be any fun.

I leveled up to 50 and started the progression and even with the harder battles it's still pretty simplistic.

It's a terrible shame too because the rest of the game is without a doubt the best themepark I've ever played- graphics, story, things to do etc.- all of it beyond top notch.

Now part of it may be because I was a blm, but still I can't see it being much better on another class.

I recently tried the free trial again, and i must agree on the combat.... it almost feels like the orriginal FF7, so static...

I am finally realizing how much combat has grown ever since the orriginal EQ...   Combat in games like GW2 and ESO is probably more my take, it feels much more interactive then this old stand still and hit your sword type of combat

If you think the combat is static, it's because you probably not reached lvl 50.

The combat is 10 times less static than Wow for example.

But it's true that at low levels (<30) the combat is too slow and you don't have enough skills.

Well, to bad for them, i never got past level 7 in this game (okay level 20+ in beta) and its not getting any better, i will never reach the glorified max level....  espescially not in this game that has you play over lower level content time and time again to level different classes....

I play for the journey, and if the journey is not fun, or even irritating me like with this game, i quit.. simple as that

raid lag was never an issue in EQ for me, and we easily had over 100 ppl on some raids

mob lag when ppl shakerpaged with many mobs, that lagged, but I never experienced much lag with many players, it was usually the mobs causing the lag

My topic was not about mass numbers of players, but mass numbers of NPC, telling stories, and the player(s group) waving trough them like a true hero...

The OP´s definition of MMORPG fails to comply with my own definition of it...   And so i must disagree with his statement, that leads me to believe that not the MMORPG genre is death, but that the MMORPG genre fails to deliver a game for his very specific gaming needs..

Case closed, i agree with the OP, that the MMORPGs currently creating dont fullfill his needs, and that there for his MMORPG career is as good as death...

Which keeps me wondering, why are people allways generalising their own specific troubles?

I don't wish to get in a lengthy discussion as this site has, sadly, proven its self to be quite volatile for anything that specific doesn't quite enjoy for any reason. However I'd like to point out for clarity sake that the above poster is..well...wrong, simply.

Based on what we know, the game definitely starts as a theme park-esque experience for a little bit (unknown how long, exactly). However that's also very common just for games to allow you to get used to the controls, mechanics, etc so forth. "Theme-park" seems to be a new default insult towards a game regardless of its actual content so I can't in good faith fault someone for jumping to that without properly researching the game.

As for cash shop, another jump in judgment the above poster does not know the answer to in any way. In fact it's something just thrown around without any proper research or understanding of the game. Allow me to put an exert from another post of mine where someone asked about the cash shop. The bit from it was a little rough and I never touched it up, so sorry about that.

"Pay to win is something thrown around A LOT and in places where it doesn't really make sense. I understand the concern but this game doesn't appear to really be capable of "P2W"....albeit that's entirely on your point of view of what P2W is.

The most I see out of this game is something similar to "double exp" which is common and I don't consider that paying to win. You're just saving time and that's fine.Even from a PVP point of view, you'll only be matched with people of similar Prestige as you (If you aren't aware; Prestige is your overall progress. You could consider it your level but it's not really...).

Buy weapons? Equipment is roughly 1/3 of your power. Even ignoring if you could buy weapons (typically what people consider pay to win), you can still be evenly matched based on Atlas progression and followers.

Pay for classes? Maybe. Obviously we haven't had hands on or even SEEN all the classes but starting classes are to be as viable as 'advanced' classes. I think this game kind of set its self up to where it could be really difficult for them to actually have it be pay to win. Which is arguably fantastic."

An amendment to that I didn't think of until after the fact; I see buying bag space as a large cash shop item as well. However I can confirm you can buy those slots in game. With no "junk items" I'm not sure how often your bag would actually fill up though.

The overall gist of this is in no way does this game present its self to allow, ahem, "wallet warriors". I don't expect everyone to properly research games before throwing around [Insult] but please do so if you're going to attempt to 'trash' a game. I completely approve of anyone that doesn't think this game is for them as that's OK. You don't need to like every game that comes out but please do fully understand a game before trying to 'put it down'. That or at least wait for things to be released before talking about them like they're out (I.E. Cash shop)

pay to win, obviously Allods has a bad reputation when it comes to this, however i agree with you that there is a big difference between paying for stuff, like paying for extra classes, and faster traditional XP is okay... paying for better gear is a no/no in my book..

However, if it will be possible to gain faith faster/more  trough actions in the shop, where faith is an absolute number influencing the power of your godform, then it is pay to win... Its like buying extra stats,

We have to see how they wrap this part of the game up, it is certainly one of my worries and even a possible longtime commitment killer....

Yes there is allways a but, the questions is what size is it?

Skyforge is very prommising for an action MMORPG, the combat seems top knotch, so are graphics and annimations, and there seems to be enough content diversity...  but the things that worrie me are ;

- Could be a death world with no NPC living it, much like DCUO

- Its a lobby kind of game, i hope there will be enough open world zones free to explore

-There is no crossskills or multi classing between then 10 classes, which will make the classswitching feel unnatural

- Allods is producing it, and the Allods has beeen ruined from the beginning by the wrong marketing decisions

-it is F2P lets hope its not Pay to Win, Allods has a rather bad reputation when it comes to this.

- Its a russian company and they have a political situation to deal with

So far those are my biggest worries, for the time being....    the first one being the biggest and a potential gamekiller for me, if the world feels empty and soulless i can not play it over a long stretch of time...

For me tab targetting would ruin all the combat immersion of this game...  I think this is a bad idea.
Eq2, love the game, great AA system, frackloads of content....  Just to bad it keeps crashing as my beatslord is probably the most fun classmechanic in any tabtargetting MMO, i really would like to get the client stable again...

I just got home from the 3rd hobbit movie...  And there is one thing it made me realise, MMOs need mass combat, not instead of the questing and exploring gameplay  ( as in lineage eternal ). But some events that end in a mass battle where you and your friends fight hundreds of NPCs..

i love questing in my MMOs but from time to time i want to feel like a real hero in a war....

it cant be that hard to develope a technique for these mass Combat events..  Because many of us players are realy wanting this

The living storie content should be much braoder, with a new quest every day...  On top of thet there should be a new dungeon atleast every other month and a new zone every 3 months...

and a yearly payed expansion pack..  And every 4 months a new PvP battleground...

And there should be an AA system that regularly expands with new skills and stuff, character progression is a must...
