The stories and the world keep pulling me back...

And then each time after a week or so, the combat chases me off again...

Everyone complains about the combat, yet they never even tried to repair the dullness of their system, how can this be, these same people developed the awesomeness of AoCs combat system...

What MMO game does have the deepest most diverse character building?

(I am not talking viuals or gear, but actuall skills, stats and traits)

Thanks... Explains a lot... Sadly mousing over does not work on my ipad, have to wayt till i am home behind my laptop

So why does DDO feel so much more like dungeons and dragons then Neverwinter, despite all the player generated content in Neverwinter...

Are there any MMOs actually trying to grab the stuff that actually pulled us intoo PnP roleplaying?

Unless you spend heaps of money in the "Cartel Shop" you can forget about any kind of decent experience...

90% of the game is 'Subscriber only' and they let you know this almost every minute of the game with little 'Subscribe Now! to access this feature" buttons and messages.

Nice try, but everything that's in the "Cartel Shop" can also be bought off the GTN (auction house).

A few expensive items will be problematic, because people will sell them for more credits than a F2P account can pay for, but it's still doable if they go the extra mile and get the escrows to go above their limit.

"90%" of the game. Sure, if you mean level 50-55 content and completely dismiss everything that comes before that. Tons of flashpoints, planets and every class' unique storyline.

And subscribing for one month will permanently unlock the level 50-55 content.

and what  are the downsides of the ftp system, for people just leveling alts?

- There's a credit cap (340k for F2P accounts, 400k for preferred? Or something close to that) - which won't impede you if you're just leveling alts to play through the storylines.

- Subs get 25% more xp than F2P/Pref accounts. The latter also don't earn rested xp. Basically this means you have to take care to not skip too many missions while leveling, or make up for it by running flashpoints or doing PvP.

To see the full list:

Short answer, it's very doable as F2P if you just want to level alts, just as Gorwe said above.

If you want to participate in the endgame stuff you're better off subscribing though.

How is for example flashpoint acces limited for preferred status?

I remember something like only 3 free acceses a week with a character?

Comparing Destiny to MMo´s is the same as comparing battery life of a smart watch to that of a traditional watch..

So we are almost at the next expansion...

what has been improved and added to the game since release?

5 out of 7, not bad...----

Nice article, looks very much like they are combining Dynamic events from GW2 and invasions from Rift intoo something new..

For me personally these worked very good, as long as there where oldfashioned quests around to tell the main stories.  I just love deep involving quests in a world that actually feels alive and where things are happening... these story bricks make the world feel alive for sure...

But still for me oldfashioned epic quests like the personal story in GW2 or the main quests in SWTOR or ESO are what makes me move around.  If you combine them with these story bricks, you can actually bring back the RPG in MMORPG.

Oh no... the earth is moving... again...

Every team needs to make changes from time to time to keep things fresh innovative and improving.  In my opinion these are just that kind of things.

Its funny to see all the doomsayers of the forums jump in and comment, while the people still enjoying this game are probably to busy enjoying themselves to even notice this post.

Now lets all sit down and wayt for their first big expansion pack...its overdue for sure, but eventually thats what we are wayting for, justy like with WoW and all those other games.  Played over  1000 hours since release, and still discovering new things in the gameworld on a daily base.

I read on a post on reddit earlier, and supposedly it's some hacker group is doing a DDOS attack on gw2, LoL, and some other games.

Hackers need to be electrocuted if they do stuff like this...  Bloody DOS attacks interfearing with my gaming

The PvE in the game is exceptional while you're character is still progressing.

Probably the best leveling experience I've had in any game.

But unlike other MMOs were the experience slowly deteriorates at end game, GW2 stops abruptly.

One day it will hit you like a bag of rocks. Then you'll never look at the game in a positive light again.

I have statedtime after  time ever since long before release, the gameneeds a horizontal character progression system. At max level..

yet, there is still a lot to progress when you hit max level....

- personal stories

- dungeon progression

- fractals of the mist progression

- worldcompletion

- heroic weapon

- sPvP progession

- titltes

- personal story..

the only thing missing is characterprogression, which is their main problem, if they add horizontall progression, which would give access to more skills, traist, weapons and suchto choose from, then i guess everyone would be very very happy..

You could have replaced everything after "personal story" with the word GRIND. There are things you can do in every endgame, that doesn't mean they are fun.

Grind is a mindset...  In the end everything in MMOs is a grind...  Did you mean the grinding is not rewarding enough in this game?

I think a system like the foundry would do very well in certain MMO´s..... espescially those that are not endgame driven....

GW2 and ESO come in mind...

I was a huge fan of GW1, so I keep trying GW2 in the hope that it will eventually 'click'.

To me GW1 was one of the most innovative and unique games ever made.  In the WOW era it was heavily instanced, story-driven, had a low level cap/ did not rely on levels as the carrot, had duel classes, had a free skill choice, had skill capping, had a vast amount of content at cap, had fantastic pvp, had aesthetic rewards.  It was the anti-mmo, a truly fun, interesting and alternative experience.

Then ANet took everything I loved about GW1, removed the best parts and WOWified the rest.

GW2 just became a generic mmo , but it absurdly pointed out its superficial differences like they meant anything to a crowd tired of derivative games.  'We don't have trinity!'.  'We don't have quest hubs'.  'We have a living story'.

So we got a world without meaning, filled with trivial tasks.  It feels like a playground; every corner is filled with pointless distractions.  There is no sense of a world with an over-riding sense of place.  There is not a compelling story.  There is no sense of freedom in building your toon.  All classes feel the same because they all fundamentally fulfil the same function.

As I said, it feels like a derivative mmo with a few superficial differences.

But the largest problem I have is the casual crowd they were aiming for.  'Casual' to me means that you do not have a great deal of time to play.  It does not mean that you want zero attachment to the game you are playing; no reason to log back in.  It certainly does not mean that you want a collection of unrelated, trivial tasks that have no meaning in the wider sense of the game.  It does not mean that you do not want to be immersed for the few spare hours you have to play.  And it does not mean that you want a 'living story' rather than (as per GW1) a complete and immersive expansion.

Here is my problem.  It seems that some people, and particularly the gaming press, hold GW2 as an example to all other mmo's.  I sometimes wonder if these people ever played GW1.  If you want a truly innovative and alternative example for the mmo industry, then surely ANet's first instalment is the game you should be looking at.

Anyway, they are my thoughts on the subject, please share your own.

I agree with you on a lot of your points.  Dynamic events where done by Rift before and other games had similar things.  Heart quests, so instead of 3 or 4 quest hubs in a zone you now have 8+.  Granted they give you 1 basic quest that might have a few different options to completion but they still are a quest hub. Plus there are other examples of how GW2 was not as innovative as they claim to be.

Unfortunately there still is enough of a playerbase to that game that if Anet ever makes another sequel it will most likely be fashioned more like GW2 then GW1

You cant compare rift dynamic  events with GW2, in rift they are a mechanic ( tough i love the invasion parts) but in GW2 they are used to tell the stories of an area, and they are very very good at that...

So basically because the OP is missing Horizontal character progression at max level and the semi trinnity of Gw1 he calls the game tedious...

i agree with him, these two features are missing but the game is far from tedious...

- solo PvE is awesome, because the world feels more alive then any other MMO, there are things happening everywhere around you...

- combat is deep and engaging, fast paced and rewarding for people with skills

- sPvP is the best and most fun  instanced PvP  setting of any MMO, this is the hardcore part of the game.

- the world is just plain beatifull and challenges people  to explore

- the game is fun for casuall play

- personal story is good,... Tough the game needs much more of these story based quests to keep people emgaged in them, as said its a casualls game and most casualls love story and soloing these quests

etc etc etc...  There is so much more goodness, but some people are so much connected to what they love about their favourite game, that they feel to see how other games are different but still entertaining.

the gw2 numbers are just the box sales, not including China.... And not including the gemshop... They put those numbers somewhere else...

i am impressed they are still selling boxes, i am less impressed with the fact that there is not auction pack yet, hell no its not even announced yet...

Might be worth doing a new alt then (and set yourself on not actually buying any traits but earning them). Then again, a new expansion will hopefully get us a new class or 2 anyways and at least the Chinese players got this from launch.

The game does not need any more basic classes, i am hoping that they will add  a  kind of hero class system, where each class gets 5 hero choices....  Each hero choice gets new traits, skills and a weapon...  Players can gain skills and traits in all 5 hero choices., but only have one traitline active with 3 extra traits....  Also every weapon/comb would get a 6th skill, which vrafters can add to these weapons (new craft)  and then  there would be a 4th utillity slot...

this is just an example, but i really hope they add more depth to the excisting classes instead of just adding more classes

im sorry but could someone explaine what the OP means exaclly? i know you dont get trait points till 30 now, but is there soemthign im missing? (oh and the fact it does not take 5 points for 1 increese)

From 30 to 80 you get a total of 14 trait points...

Minor traits are still set and for free..

but there are now 13 major traits for each line, still in 3 steps.  All these major traits use to come for free as soon as you got access to the stage...  But nowerdays you either need to perform a certain deed to get access to a major trait or buy it for  skillpoints and gold..

With the latest AAA MMO entries ESO and Wildstar not being fresh and new anymore, this seems to be a good moment for another of these alltime BEST polls...

1. GW2

2. WoW

3. EQ

6. TSW

7. EQ2

8. Wildstar

9. DCuO

10. ESO

Honnorable mentions : DDO, Neverwinter, DAoC, Rift, AoC....

These are also the games (with the exception of EQ and DAoC) that i will keep returning too,

Subtop 1 :

Best graphics top 5
