The history of Darkfall, by and large is a history of trolling. Not the Darkfall fans or players, but from other people. The first people to start trolling Darkfall were the Age of Conan fanboys(lol).

It started when one of the AoC developers started making a bunch of accounts on various forums across the net to promote that Darkfall was vaporware. He may have gotten away with it at first, but he made the mistake of trying to do the same on the Darkfall boards themselves. The community lead, Brannoc, tracked his IP back to Funcom HQ and called him out to his superiors. A public apology was made, but the damage was done. People who followed Age of Conan would occasionaly hear someone mention "Darkfall", to which the AoC sheep following would say "lol vaporware". I was briefly one of those sheep. In 2006, after my dissapointment that Middle Earth Online had been warped into... LotRO... I followed AoC. I heard people mentioning Darkfall, and it was quickly followed by "VAPORZ!! LOLOLOL", so I started doing the same, cause I figured "Oh it must just be common knowledge".

When Age of Conan started to smell fishy in late 2006, I decided to look up what exactly Darkfall was (if only more trolls had done the same). I saw the feature list and said "Oh man, that's quite ambitious, I'd love for this game to come out, too bad it's vaporware." Then I went on the forums, and read the developer updates, and it became quickly apparent that the game was completely authentic and that, once again, I was faced with the fact that the internet is full of STUPID people. I officially joined up with the Forumfallers. (not that anyone really cares)

Over the next 3 years, especially on THESE boards, people came up with the most elaborate excuses as to why Darkfall was fake. The conspiracy theories would have put the Lizardmen believing New World Order nuts to shame. Several dozen posters just dedicated themselves to derailing and flaming every Darkfall thread that came up. Eventually, some members of the Darkfall community decided to argue back. A few of them, however, were a little overzealous, and did more harm than good, but most argued logically and gave plenty of evidence and feedback supporting their arguments. However, we're working with trolls here....

Some troll tried to google Earth the Aventurine office address, and said that they found no trace of any building and that it was a fake address. Later, it was found, that the moron had translated the name of a Greek street incorrectly and was searching somewhere on the other side of Athens.

More trolls swore up and down that Darkfall could never, ever ever handle 50 man battles with twitch combat, much less the advertised hundred and two hundred man battles. Arrows would NEVER actually FLY across the map, there must be some kind of targetting. There couldn't POSSIBLY be collision detection.

Conspiracies were made as fast as they died, the trolling community grew, and they grew angry, because they sensed the battle slipping away from them.

Then, the 20 minute video came out, August 2008. All trolls vanished all at once from the boards. Many new people flooded the Darkfall forums. It took just a few weeks before several trolls started popping up again, saying that the battles were scripted, that the graphics don't really look like that, that it was all done with Gary's Mod and doesn't prove the game was real. But the number of trolls was greatly lessened.

Then, come September, beta went into operation. The trolls tried to have a field day with this. There were very very few leaks from this beta in the early days, so trolls figured that must mean there was no beta at all! It was all just a scam, they knew it all along! A few leaks popped up, but that was counter intuitive to the troll argument, so they ignored the evidence.

Come time for semi-open beta in January, the Darkfall forums got DDOSed. The trolls claimed that it was all Aventurine's inside job, so that they wouldn't have to send out beta invitations. The irony is, the day the servers got DDOSed, I got my beta invitation, and was playing one of the smoothest betas I've ever been a part of. (sadly, launch was not the same story, I concede).

Trolls went nuts, screaming that they knew it all along, Darkfall was a big scam!! and then... the forums came back up, aw, trolls silenced again.

Fast forward to game launch, most of the trolls decided, their fight was lost, so they had to go covert. They are among us now, making new accounts almost daily on the Darkfall and MMORPG boards thinking they can pass as subscibers. They made half attempts at trolling features they didn't fully understand, or had only read about, and this carries on to this day.

With the launch of the North American servers, and the first free expansion(a la Eve Online), the forums will mostly locked to anyone who doesn't have a subscription. The game will continue to grow and get constructive feedback, because I've never seen anyone as critical with their game as the Darkfall fanbase. They pull apart every detail.

So now, with the expansion being patched in, and North American servers a few days away, this has been long long LONG in coming. To all the trolls that still are sad and hurt that the game actually came out, and try their best to flog and bring down an INDIE developer MMO, that managed to do more than the vast majority of MMOs in the past 6 years I TOLD YOU SO. The game is out, it's growing, and though you tried DDOS, fake reviews, flaming, derailing threads, lies and slander, the game is doing fine.

I played darkfall for a few months but ill never go back unless they remove the guard towers if this Expansion Removes all the Safe zones in darkfall id buy it but a new mount the release of a new Glowie weapon and some Diablo style portal system (which dont get my wrong is awesome) i wont go back until my guild can raid and siege a starter area.

Such as Alfar raid the Orks and take there town over from them guild vs guild race vs race city vs city is what i wanted and im very disappointed that they went back on there word on release and added the towers to prevent any inner city ganking which is dumb. so Mortal online here i come.

AIon's North American 'beta' is more of a marketing stunt than a beta.  Running it for three days every couple of weeks is not conducive to bug-reporting, and clearly designed to build anticipation/hype.

Add to this the fact that the game has been out for over a year in other markets, and will be largely identical when released in N.A., and you can see how judging the game in this 'beta' stage actually is appropriate.

Aside from a few localizations, this is the game you'll be playing in September.   Don't be fooled by NCSoft calling this trial period a beta, its a marketing soft launch.

No its not released anywhere else still in beta in china.

anybody else notice the official poll about how bad this weekend was in relation to the last event.  The majority voted for abysmal compared to the last, by that logic the game is actually getting worse as beta progresses.  Discuss

What official polls?

the point most are forgetting is that you simply DONT have to buy the game twice.

The only reason you need to is if you just can't wait for 3 months on the EU server. and if you have been playing on the EU server up untill now, then i dont get it...why the sudden need to change? just wait the 3 months lol!

Or do we have to buy it twice and i am missing something? i can't find it anywhere in the forums?

Won't there be a $50 dollar fee to switch servers in 3 months anyway?

LoL yeah.

oh god thank you AV this is all we needed haha! ok hands up i admit Darkfall is going down!

Ok i dont realy think that :) is it just the NA server that is delayed then? if so then that's not bad at all for us EU users :) on a selfish note that is...sorry! But again AV it was pretty obvious if you were implementing a large patch on the 7th, why did you even anounce the server opening on the same day? wouldn't it have been better to wait to see if the patch works first so only one server would be messed up.

Anyone with MMo experience knows that a large patch is followed by many smaller patchs fixing things.

Tasos has 0% logic and critical thinking so im not surprized.

There track record says " Let the Buyer Beware " in my opion if you left once you will leave again.

Lol ofc he will leave again, nobody plays a game forever do they?

Game has improved and now would be the time to come back, not sure, try the trial.

You can make level 10 in an hour, and a few hour later you can be out of Tortage, so you can really see what the game is like.

The servers are really populated at the moment as well, since the 1.05 patch a lot peeps are back to see what it is like.

There are people who still play L2 like it just came out. Hell there still devoted EQ players that hav played and still play since Beta of EQ. Most of them havent even tried another game there so devoted.

So yeah you find the right game that fits you like a glove your gonna stick around.

Aion/Mortal are what im looking forward to if they fail im done with MMO's till Blade and Soul.

But Aion going to go Gold and i feel that same for Mortal cuz they actually did a wonderful job on this game but its still to early to tell on MO but Aion i play and have played for a little bit now on CAion its 5 stars.

If people really cared about chairty wouldnt they just donate directly to chairty?

And most people do. This, however, is more like a gamble charity thing. While your donating there is a chance you could get something really cool or really lame in return. Adds a bit a spice i guess :)

Yes, lets spend our time arguing that the person who won the auction didn't "really" care about charity because they didnt donate it directly.  Am I the only one who sees as absolutely ridiculous?  A charity got money cuz someone gave it to them.  Can't you just be happy about that?

No. to put it simply i cant.

We do stuff like this at work all the time. For example, the bosses have front row parking spots and we will let people bid to have it for a week then we will give the money to a cause. Or we'll throw in money to have someone shave their mustache. Fun little games that earn money for good causes.

LoL sounds like you live in the movie "Office space"

Arm them and go rob a world bank.

The bid for the lifetime account on Ebay is already over $2500. Why would anyone pay that much? You don't even get to try it first. What if you don't like it?

If you would look at the people who bidded as well they where 2 accounts with no prier Referances it seems 1 person made 2 fake accounts and bidded the price sky high and then laughed when they thought he would actually buy it.

I've been trying to find this answer for a while now. I understand there is the option to turn off click to move, but is the game set up to play well with the wsad movement style?

Most games seem like it's one or the other.  L2 is click to move and it can be turned off, but doing so makes it almost unplayable. Same thing goes with WoW but opposite.

I'm hoping it will play well with the wsad movement system. I can't even imagine how click to move would work with the flying combat anyhow.

I preordered this the other day, so hopefully I can get into the beta and provide an update.

They both work great. iv never had a problem with the movement at all. As a scout/Assassin you can use a ability to increase your speed get a running start jump and hit your Pgup key and Fly looks real to. I like to Cliff jump and uses my wings at the last second. Fun fun so that should answer there movment system isnt blocky and slow like L2 or other various F2P's. and that was in Chinese Aion.

At least the combat seems different, but still it being a normal korean grindfest seems to be more than likely.

God that just sounds like a horrible idea.

Just watched the Video and OMFG that game is raw the pvp is like some Mortal combat styled shit but in a MMO. thats wild ill be buying this and beta when it get closer.

Keeping my eyes on this one.

I see all over various forums people using the term "grinder" or "Asian grinder". Well I will tell you this, I have never seen a MMO with more grinding then what World of Warcraft has turned into over the last few years. Grinding faction rep in WoW use to involve raiding, so you could get your rep, get some loot and have some fun all at once. With BC and WOTLK expansions Blizzard has turned WoW into a total grind game, hours and hours of the same old crap to get the rep from various factions. You want the a drake mount in BC, go grind for a month strait. You want that little pet? Go grind for a couple months. You want the new shoulder enchants in WOTLK, go grind for a couple months. GRIND I say, GRIND!!!!

The only grind I like is when my woman is on top of me.

Ever played Lineage 2 alot more grinding involved in that game.

Like grind for a few years to hit 80.

play L2 on a private server with 50x exp rate its easy to get to 40 but after 40 even with 50x exp L2 takes the cake in Grind.

Now im in no way suggesting playing L2 like at all play Aion much better.

I don't pretend to understand those who feel that stongly about it.

I'm just saying that it might not be a smart business decision to pretend it will be an insignifcant percentage of your player-base that will in fact decide it IS a big enough issue.

Heck, I'm confused about those who get all EMO about a little bug getting squashed... but there are quite a few people who think it really is a big deal.

If nothing else from your time here on mmorpg.com you should have learned that there are in fact people who get upset about the smallest of infractions from MMO companies.  It isn't just DarkFall, but pretty much every forum.  Granted, Darkfall is probably number one on the crap-list right now... but that will change in time.

Tasos could have handled the situation in a way that only a fraction of those who did or will quit will never return again.  I still think they will reverse their decision on this before July 7th.

You post on ForumFall as well, do you think this is just a tiny issue that will have minimal impact on DarkFall?   The 3-4 hours queue times are about the only thing that seems to have come close to this magnitude on the Official forums.  If it doesn't blow over by the weekend, I fully expect a reversal announcement from Tasos.

I honestly dont think that there are enough gamers in the world that would stop playing a game they like in order to protest some random promise that was made by a developer.

If there are, then games are over and all we will have is really bad games with great promises but in all reality I think think you WAY over estimate you power

Umm... are you completely oblivious to what happened to SWG?   There were quite a few of us that left that game for good when they pulled the NGE despite promises from Devs, and everyone else connected with the game.

SWG never recovered.

I think that you over-estimate the loyalty that Aventurine has instilled in DarkFall's NA player-base.  We will see how this plays out over the next 3 months.

I'll still be around and posting 3 months from now.  Feel free to bring this post up and call me on it if I turn out to be wrong.  You might want to go back and check some of my previous posting from before Beta and leading up to the Release though.

downtoearth still owes me on a few "guarantees" from back then.

Yup i was one of them when NGE came out i left and never looked back and i mean SWG pre-cu was my game i loved it to death.

if NGE didnt happen id still be playing it.

Assassin

I got mine :-P

Check amazon.com maybe there.
