Quality over quantity. I agree with the cuts, and appreciate the honesty with which they were announced to us.

QFT.  I wish Funcom has learnt this lesson with AoC.

Cancelled mine 2 weeks ago, and went back to Vanguard. Glad I did too.

Ditto.  I think AoC was the best thing to ever happen to Vanguard.

I am an AoC Player and have been pissed over the stupid comments about how Vanguard is getting ALL these subs from AOC.

I never said that Vanguard was getting ALL the subs from AoC.  The number of comments on in-game chat from people who have left AoC and who are now enjoying Vanguard is astounding.  How long that lasts past the free month, I have no idea.  There is however no doubt the game is far more stable, smooth and has much more content than it did when I left it.  Vanguard had a year in the oven to properly bake.  AoC needs that year.

Scream all you want, but in the end you haters all knows this game will reach 10million active sub within a year and top WoW then let's see your whines.

You are kidding me right?  There is no way in hell AoC will top WoW.   WoW is simple, easy to play, has content coming out of its wazoo, is stable and delivers on what it promises ( ... though milage may vary on the later as customers have varying expectations).

Lets see with AOC.

  • The whole combo system will turn many players away for a start.  It suits the ADD crowd, but really it's not all that "user friendly" ... though it is different, I'll admit.
  • The zoning thing is a turn off.  Long live massive worlds with no loading screen.  Say no more on that front.
  • Content?  Grind from level 50 because there is no content.  And yet in the grind leveling past 50 was made so easy that 2 days after release there were level 80's?  Rpleacing content with an "easy" grind is a cheap tactic.  Funcom's strategy for gameplayer retention makes no sense at all.  The game is simply not finished in that respect.
  • The patch frenzy is getting tiresome.  There is little to no testing and they are introducing more bugs every patch.  AND they are holding patches in my primetime gametime.  WTG Funcom!  Make Oceanic servers and then patch them in Oceanic primetime!  WOOT!
  • Classes are not balanced.  We have a PvP world where the classes are spread from godlike to massively underpowered.  So they nerf and boost now ... but this should have been done in beta.  They are just serving to piss off their current playerbase.
  • Lack of delivery on the promise.  DX10?  But, hey lets face it ... few MMO's deliver on the hype.  I blame the marketers and under-estimating, over-promising management for that.

As I said in a previous post, give the game a year and it will probably be a great game.  And during that time it will likely hold enough players to make itself sustainable, if not quite profitable .. enough so to allow Funcom to fix the problems.

But it will not sustain anywhere near the subscriptions that WoW has.  WoW is a game for the masses.  I'm not sure AoC can ever claim that title.

As much money that players have pumped into Blizzard via WoW this security feature should be FREE!

I bet this is/was a greedy idea of Activision.

Buy it, or don't.  It's up to you.  Just like the banks, they don't force you to buy a security token.  It's up to you to decide whether you want to extra security.

And it's only seven freaking bucks for gods sake ... and a one off purchase.  Greedy?  Who's being cheap?!  I doubt they are making much, if any profit on this at all.

Funny, I can't find a single PC gaming chart with AOC still near the top.  Guess they are referring to old charts to make it sound better.

I hope so because for every bug they fix, the seem to introduce two more; it's AO all over again.   I've cancelled my account and am going to revisit in 12 months.  Hopefully FC will have settled down with the patch frenzy and the game is stable again ... and they have a decent amount of content to cover all levels.

Personally I like this idea - it will hopefully save Blizzard some money in that they don't have to have as many anti-hacking staff - it lowers the likelihood of being hacked  and is not always because you downloaded something.

QFT.  I use one for my online banking and it gives an extra layer of security and piece of mind.  I do find it a sad indictment however that it's come to THIS for a game.

Do you guys HONESTLY believe that Funcom are making money off the Beta?   It's the standard Fileplanet subscription fee .... not a fee to play the AoC Beta?

You lot need to get some perspective and stop being such a bunch of cheap arsed parasites who just want to play a game for FREE for a month.

A bunch of lame excuses from Funcom. Paying to beta test is retarded. I call shenanigans.

Ah bollocks!

Would you rather Funcom concentrate on the game or divert resources to assigning keys and handling distribution?  As much as you may hate it, Fileplanet is the best distribution method for something this size.  They regularly handle betas distributions and are geared up for it.

Stop being such a tightwad and hand over $5 for one month.  So you might have to make a lunch for one day rather than buy it at the local cafe/canteen?

If CoH becomes F2P with ad supported revenues, then I'll reinstall the game today.

My thoughts exactly!

And it' s because of this unprecedented popularity and advertising that I can go up to 90% of Warcraft players and say "So you ever play Everquest?" and have them respond "What's Everquest?".

I have yet to find a Warcraft player in real life that has even heard of Dark Age of Camelot or Asheron's Call.

I love being an MMORPG Snob.

You're not an MMO snob, you just don't have any friends or know anyone.  I play WoW, and I played damn near every MMO since UO.  So yes, I know EQ.  I hated it, but I know it.  And most everyone *I* know who plays WoW played UO, DAoC, AO, EQ, you name it.

Get off your not-so-high horse and move along, cowpoke, nothing to see here.

Precisely what he said.

I've been playing MMOs since UO.  You'd find that there are a hell of a lot of Older Gamers out there who have.

The other thing you have to remember is that WoW made MMORPGs a lot more accessible to the masses, young and old.  I know many people who turned their nose up at games in the past, played WoW and said "Hey ... this is REALLY fun!".  Anything that can convert "non-gaming snobs" into gamers has to be a pretty powerful medium.

So "perhaps Mr Condescending Director", you ain't that great after all!

I'll admit CoH/V are nich games because of their focos on text based lore and instancing but saying that WoW has more content CoH is a flat out lie.

Have another read of my post.  I didn't say COH had less content at all.

And why would I "lie"?  Such as strange choice of word for who should be an intellectual discussion.

LOL, retarded this article be.  Warcraft relies heavily on the name, theres hundreds of thousands of fanbois , not unlike Finaly Fantasy fanbois, who will buy anything Blizzard.  Also it's a solid game, easy to play.  It's not a work of genius, just a franchise name with a decent gameplay on top of it.

Editorials inherintly suck, so lets stop this garbage.

BOLLOCKS!  WoW has attracted more first time gamers to the market than any other game in existance.  You can't tell me that first time gamers are Blizzard/Warcraft fanbois; they have no prior knowledge of the Warcraft at all.  It's success lies in the fact that it IS and easy game to play.  It has solid gameplay.  It is easy for first time gamers to play and doesn't punish failure ... it's meant to be a game and meant to be fun to play.

I think this editorial pretty much hits the mark.

That said, there are many games that don't want to be 600lb gorillas.  There are still several niche's for other games to exploit ... the hardcore gamers who sneer at WoW simplicity, the gamers who love the challenge of complex gameplay, the gamers who are sick of the fantasy genre.  the gamers that value community over content, the gamers who want the bloodlust of full-on PvP, the gamers who WANT the sandbox and create their own content.  And there is nothing wrong with that.  EQ2, EVE, City of Heroes/Villians, Anarchy Online, Ultima Online, Darkfall (when we see it), Ryzom Ring and even Neverwinter Nights.

There is plenty of room in the market for all games.  Some gamers will not go for the popular game because it doesn't appeal to them.  They would rather go for the game that occupies THEIR niche.  And this is where I think the music anaolgy is appropriate.  You have "popular commercial music" ... and then there is classical, adult alternative, heavy metal, punk, goth rock.  There is a musical genre that will appeal to all niche groups.  And then there's the masses.

That's my 2c anyway.

Not impressed at all .....

..... Look at the animations for instance.  They lack fluidity of movement.  The dragon flying is just abysmal animation as is the combat. Those are the kind of details that are complete "immersion breakers", and playing MMORPGs is all about keeping "immersion" in a fantastic world.  To it's credit though, the draw distance is pretty good.

Lets just pray that the gameplay is fun.  If it's going to steal any subscribers from WoW, it's going to have to be casual friendly.  If it appeals only to the hard-core players, then it will go the way of EQ2.  And before you start flaming me .... just look at subscription numbers.  5million vs a couple 100K?  Get serious.
