Not a good list, I'm afraid.  I'm amused by the mindless praise.  It seemed to miss both Wurm Online and A Tale in the Desert, both vastly superior and far more complex crafting systems than the mindless gear churning of the EQ and VG games.  I also laugh at Eve even being mentioned.  It has a fantastic economy and it's great the crafting system plays into it, but dumping a lot of ore into an automated factory and then waiting several days for your item to pop out like an easy-bake-oven is not a good crafting system.  Sorry.

Someone who has no idea what he's talking about :)

Played all these games, EVE's crafting is by far the best. It has an entire hacking/researching/inventing/manufacturing as all parts of it. Research done is different places, owned by yourself/corp/alliance or NPC station, and that has to do with either rep, or getting the money to build the structure yourself for research and such. There is nothing more robust. Especially considering most things valuable in EVE, are created by the people, and ONLY by the people.

I'm quite sure that most of the new players will quit after a couple of months. I know I did about a year ago.

I'm always curious about people liking DF so much and defending it and why do they it. The only explanation I have is they already have high skilled macroed up characters and want more target practice... When I bought the game it was with 6 month free sub (for a higher price, though), everybody who played the game told me not to do this and buy the simple one month deal because new players simply don't stay in this game. Sadly, I didn't listen.

Let me tell you why the game will never manage to keep new players in (especially the ones who experienced other mmorpgs):

1. 90% of the old players used illegal third-party software to macro their skills back in the days it was allowed.

2. 80% of the playerbase kept macroing even after it became illegal to do so and are still doing it (I saw it with my own eyes, entering cities of one of the biggest alliances on the server and seeing walls of people hitting on each other while afk).

3. It is impossible to play the game without any third-party software to ease the use of your UI. There isn't even an autorun feature in the game and you need to either use Logitech G software or any other autoclicking software for this and lots of other missing features not implemented in default UI (like switching your staff to a sword and shield with one button).

4. Game lets you buff yourself with any possible buffing spell of any possible school at the same time (there are some exceptions for specific builds but it's pretty much true) so unless you don't want to have 30% less health than the player you are fighting you'd better learn and grind all of those magic schools and take your time to selfbuff before each pvp fight. Have fun keeping track of 10+ buffs on yourself at all times.

I did love lots of other features of the game. I think it has one of the most exciting PvE settings and I really love the mob AI and the real world sneaking (even though I hate the fact that shadows aren't FORCED on all the clients because hiding without shadows is just plain stupid). The fact that you can actually hear your enemy get close and unmount, and prepare yourself for the open world fight is quite priceless too.

Considering Darkfall's charm and all the things we do love about it, sadly, I can't really imagine playing a game where 90% of the playerbase have cheated their way to the levels at which they can defeat 20 new players like you while eating pizza and watching an "always on top" movie on half of their monitor screen...

I think my only mistake was that when I joined I was hoping for an FPS UO, where skill matters and gear doesn't, and what I got is a Quake 2 on a private server ran by cheaters.

That's not the darkfall of today, sorry.

Yes it is, sorry.

MMORPG.com is really going down hill. I don't know how articles like this get put on the front page to be honest.

If you don't want to share the information, don't, why in the WORLD are you complaining? It's so stupid. It's just an OPTION, your complaining, about an OPTION, that some people like and will USE.

Why do idiots like this get to post on websites?

I remember in school when people were saying this new thing Amazon was going to take over the world too.

I remember when people were saying MySpace was going to be what everyone was using.

I remember over a decade ago when electric cars we're the immediate future, then so was ethanol, then hydrogen based cars, and let's not forget those flying cars everyone was always told about.

People like to image that the future is going to radically change, but change happens a lot slower then people seem to realize. The reason is that someone has to invent/change something, and then it has to TAKE HOLD. That keep part takes a long time and doesn't always happen. Remember those tiny CDs that were going to replace CDs? Whoops mp3s destroyed that plan.

Facebook is sad and pathetic, and it consists mostly of people making posts like "Trying to find my car in the parking lot" or "Mmmm spaghetti for dinner". Enough people will get bored of it and move on, facebook isn't going to rule the world. Farmville already posted a major loss for the last quarter, showing that even those crazed facebook people can realize something is crap and not want to deal with it anymore.

The only accurate part is MMOs will no longer be giant download clients, and likely a lot of them will play right in the browser. It's not like there haven't been browser based MMOs for a decade now already. But there is still consoles as well. Let's not forget that there are more console gamers then PC gamers now, which would in turn mean that the biggest push is to get the first major MMOs on console and make a fortune. But there will definetly be a push for streaming MMOs on PCs.

I believe this to be more true than the article.

What I am saying is that if something isn’t done, good-natured and healthy MMO communities might become a thing of the past.

Already done.

Some problems with the article:

Sure there are different ways of watching movies, however there are some movies that their theater experiences cannot be replicated outside of the theater.  If so theaters would be closing down and movies wouldn't be breaking weekend attendance records.

These user interface hardwares, that are being wrongly attributed to a Third Age, have been around since the very beginning of gaming and continue through their fads today.  There have been racing wheels forever, fully featured flight sticks, and lets not forget that one Mech game that had a huge freaking console controller.  Nintendo's powerglove, the light guns, etc etc etc.  These "new" input devices have died off more times than any other fad in gaming so to proclaim them the "mammals" while traditional input methods are labeled "dinosaurs" is a whole lot of nothing and shows a distinct, imo, lack of knowledge of that which has gone on before.

As to the whole social networking nonsense, not everyone uses facebook.  Not everyone is a self-aggrandizing, narcissistic asshat that actually believes that their own little narrow view of the world means jack squat.  Sure these developers may try and rope you in with iphone apps, or ways of interacting with the game in some limited fashion from your watch (people do still wear those right?) but that will lead, quite simply, to more and more people running into problems with the real world.  Things like work and family.  If someone truly needs to keep track of the virtual toon that they rent from blizzard 24 hours a day 7 days a week they probably should pick up a less destructive habit like crack or heroin.

I agree with this. I believe it needs to be quoted more than once to show that a lot of the point in this article, to me, just don't make sense. Some things do, there will be a "third" age of MMO's and games in general probably by the middle of this decade at the latest, but I very very highly doubt that some special interface or Facebook and twitter will be at the heart of it.

What Arguement?

Every time I've ever talked to someone about the 2, no matter what they play, or if they prefer the consoles for some games or the controls or what not, they always agree that the PC is still far superior in the things it can do.

When I can get on my Console and be able to

-check all of my different e-mails

-check my bank statements

-read the newest Penny-arcade

-surf for porn

-download all my games directly off the internet onto the console

-sign in to all of my chat programs and talk on all of them at the same time

-download all new patches for all games in the background while not slowing down my system

-check this forum and all others I wish to check

-Watch movies at anytime I want(Not just netflix)

-Listen to iTunes or any other music player

-Check Ebay or any other sort of site that I wish to sell/buy things on (Amazon, Overstock, Tigerdirect, ect.)

-Has a control scheme that is so easily set up and customized as a computer

-Allows me to customize it in anyway shape or form and download things so that I can change it as I see fit

-Set moderator tools for all of these specific functions

-Oh yea, and play multiple games at the SAME TIME.

When consoles can do that, there might be an arguement.

For new player thats a damn big reason, but if you are so ignorant it isnt. Thats enough said about your comment.

If you are going to quit because of dying, then preventing you from dying during "newbie" phase will just prolong you from quitting.  People who quit the first month will just quit the second month. The only thing I'd like to see AV add is maybe a 5hr invulnerability shield since that will allow people to get used to the interface and the game before dying, without making the system exploitable. Newbie zones are a waste of development time unless they are intergrated into the game's story

Edit: I love how every time a "I quit the first month" post is made, regardless of the game, its always a new MMORPG account.

I quit my first month. Do I have a New MMORPG Account?

I just went there today and the content was deleted, is this already over with or what?
