The most important part to me is whether the chicken TASTES GOOD... not whether it was fried or baked.

For games all I want is for it to be FUN... whether it's a themepark or a sandbox or twitch or tab target...  all is far secondary to simply having a fun game.  Once we have bunches of THOSE then we can start to haggle about the details...

I have to disagree with your first statement.  Sandbox and themepark are entirely different styles of game design.  So it is a huge deal that nothing has emerged in the marketplace lately with that kind of design.  I will have to grant you there really has not been much in the sandbox design box for ages, so it is understandable that you don't grasp how different the two designs are.

I have to agree with the fun factor though.  If the game play is not fun there is not much point in playing and it has to continue as long as you play.

I would argue that they do NOT have to be mutually exclusive.  I would argue that even a good sandbox game will have to have well developed PvE.  I am not saying they need quest bubbles and exclamation points, but the world should be populated and a reasonably well developed AI should control the creatures/NPCs.  But that is just my takeaway from most modern sandboxes I played... again.. all I want is a FUN game.  If a fun sandbox comes out with zero PvE.. that's great too.  I don't see how, but I'd love to be surprised.

Yup.  Today people are more obsessed by the adjectives than the resulting FUN factor.   People actual post things like "Yes I agree game XYZ is horrible but it's the only game around in 1st person, Open World , Full Loot PvP, with twitch combat, classless skill system, with auction houses in a fantasy setting"

Just makes me scratch my head...

Still one of the best games I ever played.

If they would just update the netcode I would go back in a heartbeat.  Really hoping Camelot Unchained turns out to be a close spiritual successor.

I find that most games can be easily categorized by how the majority of conversation about that game goes:

Bad Games = Most discussion is about what the game will become or could be in the future

Good games = Most discussion is about how the game exists now

Dead Games = Most discussion is about how things "used to be"

Just figured I would share.

Linking to a video often leads to an area where the hack is discussed or links to the hack can be found.  I think that this site took steps to sterilize the gif so it doesn’t lead to hacking info.  The video may not be the problem, where the link to the video can lead to is the problem.  I don’t want to turn my post into a how to guide, so I will just say.  Your method was more dangerous and therefore in violation.  Their news report was less or not at all dangerous so is in compliance.

Actually if you read the article and follow the links you will now see that every instance of the video/gif has been moderated from the forums, but it's still in the news file :)

The forums and moderation are actually not run by the same people that do the features and news.

By that alone, the community manager has no right to enforce a forum rule on an article.

It's actually fairly funny that the "News Article" now links to a forum post that was moderated to remove the video that the news post highlights...

There is no need to comment, as said before, those rules apply to users and not the writers themselves.

If they did remove posts of animated gifs or videos demonstrating hacks, even by users, that would be silly however.

I'm sure YOU said it before, but I hope you understand my not wanting to assume some guy named Fdzzaigl speaks for the site...

And yes they have removed tons of videos claiming to show hacks in other games.

The OP is actually most likely in the right here.

I can also say that I've been warned / given infractions myself for just mentioning that a 3rd party program exists. No links, no telling peope how to find it, just mentioning that it's a thing that exists in the world.

The real kicker is the way they have their rules setup here is it doesn't matter if it's a hack, or an endorsed 3rd party program (an addon the game devs themselves approve of), you are not allowed to talk about any of it on this site.

That said, getting mad about these rule inconsistencies seems a bit moot. Because this site periodically breaks / skirts the lines of their own rules anyway, and pointing it out seems to do nothing but piss them off or get yourself warned / suspended. So, you might as well just accept that this is the way this site is, for better or worse.

Oh I'm not mad.  Just asking if the rules changed because I have plenty of similar videos for other games that I would like to share.

Really wish MikeB or someone would pop in and comment.

I never linked to any "working hacks" nor any video that said where to get them.   In the past simply showing a video of a hack was against the rules.

It's the same thing...

Link to a video or link to a gif of the same video.  You want to start debating the definitions of "is" next?

  • 3rd Party Programs
    • MMORPG.com does not allow forum discussion concerning programs that go against a game's EULA. This includes, but is not limited to, third party programs to automate gameplay or gain an unfair advantage over other players. Please check with your specific game's EULA for more details on what is or isn't allowed.

When I attempted this same discussion regarding other games by linking to videos showing obvious hacking those posts were deleted and infractions issued.  I was told that even if you did not LINK to the hack, it was against the rules of this site to discuss or make allegations and link to videos of those hacks.

Has MMORPG.COM changed it's policy? Now not only is a discussion allowed as well as a  video of an alleged hack, but it's actually HIGHLIGHTED by MMORPG.COM as a "news" article?

So my question is simply:

A) Did the site change it's policy regarding the enforcement of the code of conduct and can we now freely link alleged hacking and third party use in games?

or

B) Did the site just mistakenly break it's policy?

I'm OK either way, but if you're policy changed I'd like to know because there is a certain game that I have plenty of video evidence of hacking that I would love to post.

Think this is just single player though... too bad.  Really enjoyed Divinity Original Sin in multiplayer mode.

Why do we care?   All that is important about a game is:

"IS IT FUN?"

I fully understand that the system in its current state is not developed enough for everyone, but I also don't think that the people who don't think it is developed ENOUGH should determine when we begin to monetize the game.  That decision should be made by the people who decide to play not by those who don't.

Interesting take.  I mean, you had people who thought this game was ready for a subscription 3 months ago (heck I know there were people 6+ months ago...).  Not many, just a few of your diehards.  You are now in what, triple digits of players?  That's a really miniscule percentage of the folks you hope to target.  And remember, that really miniscule percent of the MMO population will forever have an edge over new players due to the way you have monetized experience points.  So you can NEVER catch up in total XP.  Yes, I know once again you will claim that in the future the returns will diminish, but even if I were to wait 4 months, I would forever be 4 months worth of experience behind your diehard core. Which is one reason why I am STILL tempted to activate my accounts and let the 4 months prepaid sub time tic.. just to not fall behind... but I shouldn't really have to choose between paying for/playing a broken game or falling behind.

So sure, it's your game and you can (and have) let a few dozen to a few hundred diehard fans tell you it's developed ENOUGH, but you have also made every person who might potentially play LATER (when the game is more substantial) have to at least give a second thought to playing a game where they will never, ever... under any circumstances... be able to catch up in experience.

Maybe a bunch of those people won't care and will play anyway and I suppose that's what you are betting on.  Personally, I have no doubt that this is and will drive a substantial portion of potential players away.  I just think it's a question of how many, not if.

BTW- I would like to give respect for you coming to a 3rd party public forum and fielding these tough questions and differing opinions.  I may not agree with your answers but the fact that you, the guy making the decisions, is on here having this discussion gets a lot of credit in my book.

Lot's of people in your position use words like Will Be, Hope to, Potentially...

My point is simply that you are charging a sub now.  That should be based on what actually IS and not what might someday come true. I believe that everyone in your game right now has ALREADY paid at least $100.  I personally don't think it was too much to ask for you to launch with an actual loot system, ESPECIALLY if it's really just a few weeks away.

Graphics can come later, content can come later, classes can come later, but basic things like the combat system SHOULD be finished before you start charging a sub.  I mean way back in early Alpha you instituted the ranged self-stun (you call it root) as a "placeholder".  It's still there...

3. The minimum product right now is about social cooperation to kill monsters/harvest resources, and then refine resources into crafted goods.  That part so far is a lot of fun.  My settlement, Ozem's Vigil, is well-organized, with a lot of good people who like to cooperate on common goals.  We had a bunch of us in game last night, talking on TS, and working our bank toon and coordinating who was gathering/crafting what.  It was a lot of fun, and it is towards a social goal: getting everyone in the settlement armor and weapon of at least +1 quality.  Love having shared goals like that in a game :)

What you describe is fairly standard MMO stuff.  I can't remember any games I played where I wasn't on voicecom with my friends doing the exact same stuff at the start of the game.

Very interesting and fair review!

I agree 100% that more social tools like a friends list are must-have features for a lot of our audience and they help build a sense of in-game community.  It's a feature that is very high on my "wish list".  :)

As to the graphics, I think they've continuously improved (as we said they would) throughout the alpha and now into Early Enrollment.  If you see the game played at high quality graphics settings on a good GPU, it looks very nice.  A lot of people draw conclusions watching Twitch, for example, where users are often running on simple quality graphics to maximize framerates, and then there are a lot of compression effects.

Check out our website goblinworks.com and look at the screen shots we've posted and the video we recently posted for a sense of where the quality level is right now.  All that material was composed in-game.

Ryan the problem I have has nothing to do with graphics.  It has to do with launching a territory control game with partial looting PvP without the actual territory control (yes there is the silly tower wars placeholder but its nothing like the real system), and without the looting of players.  Most of all the combat itself is really.. well.. let's use the word rough.  I mean, using ranged attacks currently do the equivalent of self stun to your character as they root in place for the whole unbreakable animation.  Cannot move, cannot turn.  Yes, I know this is another placeholder... but you are charging people money now to play.  The minimal viable product should at least have combat down in a fun and functional form that is pretty close to what you envision the final product to be.  You can add all the content you want as you develop, but by the time you start charging people a subscription you should have basic mechanics pretty much locked down.

You can do 2 things in game right now.  Fight and craft (and by extension gather).  I don't know how the crafting is going, but the fighting should not have so many placeholders at the point you charge money.  Just my opinion, but that is exactly why I have 4 accounts from the Kickstarter sitting unused right now.

It actually feels like a living breathing world that isn't on rails and makes you feel like exploring and communicating with others? Just thought I would throw that out there, but please continue.

So can we list some of the "many current mmos" that this game already surpasses?
