side note: anyone know of the status of the new upcoming CCP World of Darkness?

Thanks for the update

I was pleasantly surprised to see Bioware's crafting direction for their upcoming MMO. What if DC universe looked at this angle to implement crafting in the game?

True, few heroes craft themselves. However, can they hire / befriend/ someone or an entity that could? Villains can do this in spades because many of them have henchmen.

It could work, yes?

The UI sort of reminds me of guild wars

I hope I get to play in open beta or the stress test event to see just how these power sets pan out. I thought an invulnerability/ might set would be available like in all current superhero MMOs, but seems this is not the case

All I hope for is there is enough content per tier to give the impression to me that what i did a week ago could still be in place. I understand the concept of resetting the chain of events. I just hope there are many places you can go at a certain tier. Do I have to do the Centaur scenario every time I create a new toon?

SOE did the same thing with DCUO. That release date is so bogus i can't imagine what they are doing with this game

What if a free to play model was based on style of gameplay? Lets say you make a game whose content is free as a casual gameplay behavior is concerned. You can play to max level.  You can solo your way up or group.  You have access to loot in what you kill/ complete missions.

If you wish to : craft, form and manage a guild ( you can still be a member in a guild in f2p, but no access to guild related content), access to pvp loot (either direct or via vendor), engage in raids, access to achievement rewards, housing, and any other meta game then you must pay. Either access or subscription.

This could serve to attract the casual players and really get them invested in the game. Build the community, etc.

This could keep sandboxers because they are dedicated enough to enjoy all aspects of the game and it would filter the casuals..

Up until World of Warcraft, most of the people that played and enjoyed the MMO genre were accustomed to sandbox style gameplay. Wildly Successful games boasted a few hundred thousand subscribers. The ease of the game WoW was attracted the console gamers. It was enjoyable enough for them to stay on board. WoW became #1.

WoW attracted the casual gamer, the veteran MMO player was left to grumble in the proverbial corner. Money talks and the evolution of MMO games went from niche metagames and chat drama to a glorified easter egg hunt to win.

That is not to say WoW didn't have its share of drama and metagames. They sure did. I do not recall Everquest, DAOC, Shadowbane and the like having so many videos made like WoW. Player made documentaries, dramatic movies and the like are everywhere.

They aren't fun for the OP, because he is an aging breed of player. He is a sandboxer. Just like in the early 90s, there will be few games that will quench your thirst, always. Why, because developers will no longer invest millions of dollars and tie up those funds for 4+ years. Indy developers will slowly forge out their niche games for you, but they are handcrafted, flawed and require lots of patience for the sandboxer to endure.

For the casual player, MMOs offer an opportunity to wade into the online pool and splash around. Sometimes they continue on to become veteran swimmers and even lifeguards for others. Most will move on to the next swimming pool that offers a slide or another trinket feature. Nothgin wrong with it. just the way it is.

And these are usually the first people to start crying when it starts raining outside. The pool jumpers who usually don't spend very long in each pool, but will complain the heaviest when it starts to pour or even sprinkle a little.

These "fair-weather fans" basically control the industry right now..

I wish I could disagree, but I can't.

When I saw the non MMO related ads disguised as Recent blog posts I shook my head and simply buried them.  At  least i did what I could for this gaming site. Now the companies are getting smarter. Now you click on those BS blogs and they take you to their website. unable to bury them at all.

MMORPG - are they paying to advertise on your site or not? Is this fair for all your other advertisers? At least give your members an opportunity to bury these ads so we can find new blogs on the mmo industry. Not how to buy viagra.

I'll reserve my judgement till i know more.

Me too, the comment that this will come from the East might make this a grinder we all become accustomed to. Who knows?

I agree with Commitus. SWG had its pinnacle niche with crafting I suppose. So this game is not crafting. I agree . I do like the direction it is going because it seems more true to the heroic role. Luke didn't eat a bunch of muffins or had his lightsaber rigged so he could take on the Emperor. I want to manage my minions because I am a taking on a leadership role in this game. I am done with running around in my full plate to look for iron nodes.. with a pick.. Take the grind away from me. yes. I want to spend the few hours a day I have adventuring, not staring at a crafting table. If you want to forge your items and take pride on those things - games like Istaria catered to the crafter.

Now more women will be interested in MMOs since the Entropia 335,000 sale.

Mama wants a new pair of shoes! Play Entropia!

Jesus WoW

I admit Circe doesn't leap out in my mind as a major baddie in the DC Universe, but since Wonder Woman is famous, they prolly used her arch nemesis as a mentor for the villains.

On a side note, I believe the level cap at launch will be level 30. I wonder how SOE will utilize these mentors. Will Robin be a mentor for lvl 1-10? Batman for level 30? and perhaps Green arrow or another mentor for 11 -20?

Or will they spread the mentoring out based on gear they can hand out?

Anyone know more about how it will work?

I am warming up to SGU. It was a decent series

As I type this reply there is a small banner ad for War of Angels

"Epic Armor or Bust!" and sure enough I see a bust about to fall out of a breastplate.

Far East MMOs are overrepresented in their ads. Only Age of Conan (M rating) has a suggestive ad.

::shrugs:: it is the nature of this business whose demographic are primarily young men

1. Batman

Batman is already a mentor, silly. So is Robin

Considering I just lost my post somehow. Here is my thoughts:

Heroes:

Aquaman

Green Arrow

Mr. Terrific ( although he isn't confirmed in the game yet. :(

Villians

Gorilla Grodd

Black Manta

Darkseid won't mentor anyone, but Granny Goodness just might.

Edit: Trickster seems to be the Flash counterpart
