I don't care If I get banned, also I didn't give my lotro account mail so it's pretty safe.

Thanks for your support guys.

WoW's game world 9/10?!!!  LOTRO game world 8/10?!

HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED BOTH? WoW has a little and awful world, like a kids playeground. LotrO has one of the biggest and most beatiful world.

5 for WoW, 10 for LOTRO.

Exactly, there's a model of MMORPG that most of the games has and it was not invented by WoW. WoW is just another game, just over-popularized.

A car is a car.  4 wheels, 2-4 doors, etc...

MMO's work the same way and, just like car designers, if it works, and the customers like it, use it.  They'll deviate a little from a successful mode of operations but you won't find radical shifts in how things work anymore.  What works is used and what hasn't worked will not be tried again.

Car designers discovered a while back that they need to implement changes slowly.  Radically different will be rejected but a series of small changes implemented over time can and does work so you follow a "stock model" and adjust as you go but MINOR shifts from the "accepted" model -- nothing truely innovative/radically different or the majority of users will reject it and without a large enough market share, you're out of business.

If you really look at the design of wow at release, it was a pretty radical change in comparison to how mmos were at the time.

No forced grouping, tons of solo content, quest based leveling, story driven content, instanced dungeons, flexible class design and mechanics, responsive gameplay, attention to details, etc.  Sure some of those elements existed spread out through several games, but overall wow was a very different approach to mmos.  That is part of what made it so popular.  It addressed the problems of mmos in 2004.

Many new games are just the same formula wow used rehashed.  Maybe there are some different graphics, tweaks to class structures, a new mechanic or two, but too many times the core gameplay is something most people have played to death in wow.  Perhaps calling a game a clone is being overboard in many cased, but essentially it hold some measure of truth.  Most new games are not addressing what many people consider the problems of mmos in 2010.  They are just regurgitating designs that addressed the problems of mmos in 2004.

WoW was a copy of Asheron's Call, it wasn't original! Just because of WoW monopol people think it was the first of it's kind. IT WASN'T. WoW is just another MMORPG, so populated because of commercials!. DEAL WITH IT

Deal with that WoW is not perfect game, it's boring and monotonous. LotrO is much better game and it's 100% original. As I said, WoW couldnt sue LotrO, because WoW was first to steal something from Turbine. Deal with it, your game sucks.

So is every other game that's coming out including F2P Asian MMOs now.

Just like how every MMO before WoW was a copy of Everquest.

If you don't agree w/ this, you're either stupid or in denial. (Yes, WoW copied a bunch of small things and put it together, that's obvious)."

I came across this quote on the forum today, and I was thinking about it. Is really every mmo after wow a wow clone?

True we have seen some games that looked A LOT like wow. But.. isn't it to easy to say about a game "It's a WOWCLONE!!!"?

To me it mostly sounds like you haven't played this game and if you did you only played it for 15 minutes.

What do you guy's think, are all mmo's after wow trying to be like wow, and are all the people who complain 'thatzz a WOWCLONE!!" noobs? or are there still lot's of mmo's that have their own style?

Actually, WoW cloned UI of Asheron's Call, which was the game by Turbine. Turbine didn't clone WoW, they have borrowed something that was theirs before.

The fact that it had to go f2p just shows how crappy a game it is.  One f2p turd isn't much better than any other f2p turd in my book.

Well, it depends on the point of view. I have played almost every big title MMO, including WoW, Lineage I & II, City of Heroes, Aion etc. I stayed the longest time with LOTRO, for me it's the best MMO game I ever played, and many others can say that. Like someone said before, LOTRO isn't the game for everyone.

The one thing I don't understand about your post is describing the game as crappy because it's going F2P. Ofcourse, Turbine is trying to pull up the population on the servers, which is low, but why is it low? I think it's just because of the WoW monopol and commercialism. Just look on the mmorpg.com game ranking. It's on the second place, far above WoW and the rest.

Isn't it possible to buy deeds and traits and stuff like that, I would defiantlely pay for these as grinding hundreds of mobs is my least favorite thing to do in game. I just started a month ago and my warden is lvl 35, I wonder if it will be worth it to keep paying the monthly fee after ftp is released, is that even an option? and will it be possible to pay the monthly sub while also buying stuff in the store? I don't have any problem spending more money on the game if I'm having fun.

You can keep paying the monthly sub after LotRO goes f2p.  All those who sub during f2p will get a certain number of Turbine points each month to spend in the store.  And of course, they are not going to stop you from spending more on top of your sub in the store if you want to ;).  (Check out the f2p FAQ on the website, under the VIP column).

One thing I'm not sure of is if Turbine will keep offering their $30.00 for 3 months subscription deals.

If you get a subscription in LOTRO F2P, the game wouldn't change much for players that had already been playing it before. Even if subscription would be more expensive, the biggest advantage is that you will not have to pay to enter the game world if you don't have money to pay for subscription. The one thing is for sure, many former players will come back to the game and many new players will arrive, so the great advancement in F2P will be population growth.

Btw. I have lifetime subscription which would change to lifetime VIP, so the game for me will be the same as it was before and I will be receving 500 Turbine points monthly. That's very kind of Turbine that they didn't forget about game founders.

Well, it's simple.

Most F2P mmos = Gear > Skill

As long as you have money or rich parents, you can have all, exp ten times faster than others and gain max stats in no time. That's how it is in Silkroad for example.

LOTRO = Gear < Skill

Firstly, I've been playing LOTRO for 1,5 years now and I must say that this game isn't and never was about good gear, ofcourse it's important, and helps you alot, but that's not the thing that will make you better than others. For example, a good skilled champion can take 5 mobs at once not dying, without super-hero-max gear, unlike a good-geared champion with no skill. Lately my friend told me he crafted for his friend the best gear he could possible have on his level, but he had no experience at all. And? He was dying one time after another, got irritated, threw away keyboard and stopped playing LOTRO.

Secondly, When I was playing LOTRO F2P beta, I noticed that items in Lotro Store don't give you max stats, don't allow you to gain level faster than others, don't make you stronger (at least not for ever). Although there were permanent options like +1 to Virtue Trait, it was very costly and it could be gained without money in 15 minutes.

Moreover, LOTRO is one of few games that offer gaining store points through gaming, so you don't really have to pay if you play well.

To sum up, I would say that LOTRO F2P cannot be compared to most F2P mmos with item mall, because it is much more fair play among players with and without money. I guess the most of the money would be made by permanent options like more quests and level gap removal, optional maps and so on. Unlike other games, it would not be possible to buy gear and stats in real money.

Thanks and sorry for my English.

Hope it's understandable. And for kiddish and rude people: try to speak Polish fluently, and then question my English. ;)

Regards

Actually it's Star Wars: TOR.

WoW and Aion are boring for me. I think Star Wars TOR will beat WoW.

I don't understand pressing the issue of your tastes on others. I don't go into the Guild Wars Forums saying "this game is bad because I don't like the way it is". Actually, after I try a game I won't even post about if I dislike it. I may agree with somebody on some feature that seemed to lack any excitement for me, but I also understand its appeal to others.

That's why I didn't write it on Aion forums.

Alright, My mmorpg gaming began when I was 14. I was a huge .hack//sign fan and still am. I always wished that I could play a game online with people just like the characters from the anime. to my surprise along came FFXI in 2003. My cousin was the first to get the game. When it first came out I didn't think much of it. I figured "Well If I get it for the ps2 its going to cost me over 100 dollars...and If I ask my parents for a new computer it wouldn't be very logical. Considering my mother was disabled and my dad was working pick up construction jobs. I decided to pass on the game in 2003. Along came 2004 and I was in the 10th grade in High school. A lot of my work started to require me to get a computer. So I decided to ask my parents for a school computer to make my life easier. (No one likes to stay after school to do homework at the computer lab). Surprisingly enough my father was saving up money to buy me a car when I turned 18. He used those 800 dollars and bought me a HP desktop. Specs were nothing fancy, some 120MB graphic card, 512 regular ram, and a 350GB HDD. Pentium 4 and had Windows xp, it was a basic multimedia computer for 2004. So at that time my mother decided to get the internet set up. We got a great deal with SBC for $20/mo basic high speed and still get that rate today.

It was sometime in the Fall/winter when I continued to see my cousin play FFXI and I decided to use some of my birthday money to buy the game. I got it and was so excited. I felt a lot like the characters from .hack//sign already as I was walking home from the store. While bumping my .hack//sign soundtrack I began to install the game. My mother let me use her debit card to pay for it, as long as I gave her the 15 dollars a month which I usually got from my 10 dollar a week allowance. I remember the olympics promos were on TV a lot. Since we didn't have cable, (still don't) seeing this was rare so I was excited to wach it. I wached the promos all night until around 11pm waiting for the game to install on a school night. I ended up passing out waiting for FFXI to finish updating. The total time it took to update was roughly 7 hours. I woke up at around 5am and was really happy to see the game had finished installing. So I started to create my character. I made a hume from Bastok and began playing. I had no idea what would come next.

So as I began playing I met many people enjoyed a lot of content and adventures with my cousin as well as have some really strange experiences. This is the first time I have ever told anyone outside of my close friends about this but I did get involved in a in game relationship with a 35 year old woman. At the time I believe I was 15. I don't know why I did it but I did. She called me at my home all the time, we talked a lot well in the end it didn't work out caused me a lot of heartache and depressed me for around 3 weeks. I was lucky to have met a lot of good freinds in FFXI who helped me understand just what had happened to me. I met an individual named Dave who was studying to be a psychologist. He became my closest friend in FFXI and one of my closest real life friends. To this day I often call him if I need advice or some words of encouragement. I began to notice my grades were starting to slip. I began going home never doing my homework and playing FFXI over 6 hours a day. I neglected a lot of my work around the house, and most of my social interactions began to happen in game. When a counselor told my mother that I was about to end up in the Learning center of my high school something inside me snapped. The mixture of pain from the online relationship with the woman, and the feeling that I was letting down my family really got to me. I was after all the first person in my family to go to school. Let alone High school. So I did what I never thought I would do in 2005. I deleated my level 75 Dragoon level 75 White Mage Character and said my goodbye to FFXI.

Almost that same week my grades began to pick up. In 4 months I had turned an entire progress report of all Ds and Fs to all Bs and Cs. I had a much better grasp over my studying but my addiction was not over. A freind from school recomended me to play World of warcraft. He said it was a very casual game that I could play at my leisure. So I decided to give it a try. Long story short, I did play World of warcraft for about 9 months. I did enjoy it and had a level 60 Hunter, and level 60 Paladin. As the BC was announced I said my goodbye to world of warcraft and focused again on school. My grades had kept strong at B average but I just was not having fun anymore with WoW. I ended up graduating high school without a problem, Being the first person in my family to do it.My family came from all over Mexico to congratulate me.

Fast forward 3 months and I started going to college. At first I decided to make my major culinary arts, and due to the low homework load I had a lot of free time. I decided to pick up my old drug of choice FFXI and re-make another character now with the knowledge of control. It turned out quite well actually. I would play 3 months, and quit 2 months. I got to level 60 and stopped. At the beginning of 2008 I began to notice culinary was not for me. I did not feel like I was challenging myself enough. I decided to change my major to psychology.

This was the best choice of my life. Not only did my friend Dave who I met thanks to FFXI influence me in this but the choice also helped me understand myself and others much better. Right now I am in my college's Psychology honors program. I am getting paid by the district to be a research assistant to professors at the university. I also have a 3.0 GPA and just got a $2000 scholarship in the summer. Needless to say I went from the depressed kid who had fallen in love with a virtual diva and was about to ruin his life forsaken to remain in poverty like my family has lived for 200 years to an honors student making his entire family proud and more so myself. I do not blame mmorpgs for my initial problems, I think they were a very useful learning tool and actually helped me grow up a bit faster than I would have otherwise.

Ever since I got into the psychology honors program I have been trying to figure out a way to play mmorpg games as a casual player. I no longer have time for FFXI as a lot of you know it takes up a ton of time. I started to consider playing Free 2 play mmorpg games. I figured, "At least I won't have to waist money" Well thats not true. As I started to progress in one or another free 2 play mmorpg game I noticed that you have 2 choices. Ether you spend a lot of your hard earned money on this game, or you spend a ton of time. Nether which I was willing to do. I am only able to play about 6-8 hours of total time a week. I have read many stories of college students playing mmorpg games. I would like to know of some. If you are one of the people who can balance MMORPG gaming and school, or have found an mmorpg game that is casual enough to let you do both without maxing out your credit card please let me know.

I made this post for 2 reasons.

#1 I just wanted to share my story with the mmorpg community. I'm sure some adult readers will get to the end of this wall of text. For this I thank you.

#2 I also wanted to inform that as a college student I have found no way to play mmorpg games and balance a high GPA, and research part time work (10 hours a week). Again if you happen to be one of those people who has found this casual blessed game for the college student please let me know. Otherwise any comments on my story or productive discussion is welcome.

Thank you

If people wouldn't do this, there would never be a problem with people defending their game. Solve this problem, pretty much solve the other. That will never happen though. People feel to important to shut up, if they dislike something,  they gotta let the entire world know.

Is it the end of the world if someone can't stand the graphics, the story or the extensive grind of your favorite MMO??? I get the need to defend thing you like, but getting angry and rude over it. Is it really any need??? Why not just ignore them??

Then there's the other question...Why do MMO gamers...or again...gamers in general...feel the need to make fun of the games other people play...It's not like the other people are stupid, because they can't see the 'benefit' of your game is it???? Do they really need to be playing your game to be 'cool'.

Taste is like the ass people...it's divided. I'm rather new on this forum...I know that...but in the time I have been here, I have seen so, so many threads ending up in just general shit throwing...and yes...I know by posting this I probably just inflame another shitstorm. I just had to post it, because there's no need to be so freaking rude all the time...and it's not fun having to wade through hours of needless and childish fighting to get to a good point in a thread...

Someone likes the daughter, and others go for the mother...it's a fact of life.

Sorry but there a difference between:

Hey so I tried X game and it sucks ass a proper epic fail!!

And

Hey I tried X game but after playing it for several hours/minutes I got it's not for me, what are your thoughts?

Now if those that don't like a particular game go for 2nd type of topics OR ATLEAST provide real issues there wouldn't be flamings.

Yeah, I played Aion for some days and it was a total failure for me. When I told it gently on forum, a group of hungry superEGO angry Aion fans were about to kill me. Also they found that i don't speak english very well. Thanks, I know that.

Agree, I just wrote that I didn't like Aion and I have been eaten by it's fans...
