EvE works becuase there is a well balance economy, pvp, pve.  People don't have to PvP. That is why a fishing ship would ve been a great idea.  You can build a serious economy just on fishing.  This will create a community of chatters, and group play.

Background:  When POTBS was introduced to the MMO Community, all of us EVE pilots were very happy to see a game that will compete against EVE.  During Beta Testing this game showed alot of potentials.

The reason why POTBS is great:

ship to shore, Walkable character
Ship based game with customization
Ports contention battle

what we asked for:

Fishing economy, similiar to mining... but an economy culture beside a PvP or PvE.
Manual crafting, pointing and click just won't work. current system is too easy!!!!
Manual resources collection economy.... point and click will not work
Huge maps, This will give more random on PvP. (in EVE it takes hours or days to travel from one corner of space to another) 
Social card game, chess, casino or what ever in tarven.
More Ships types, i.e fishing, rowboat, small boats. (When you think about POTBS has only one type of ship, combat ships)
DONT RELEASE THE GAME UNLESS U CAN DO THE ABOVE ITEMS... i remember all of us yelling at FLS,... that POTBS was not ready... 

why this game failed:

1) Didn't listen to us.. i think FLS didn't listen to a single beta tester. If you read the beta tester forum.

It is funny to read fans of EVE defending their position...   I swear EVE players don't look in the mirror before typing a reply... so, if i were to summary their talking points on EVE:

It is the new players fault for being a noob and stupid.  Deal with it.   You are going to die, there is nothing you can do about it.

Am I right?  Seriously, if you analys their replies, you will see that you are no longer playing your game.  You have to do XYZ in order for you to be safe. WHY DOES NEW PLAYER HAVE  TO DO XYZ in order to be safe? So far we got a few replies and all of them have the same underlining theme.   Question to anyone that wants to waste 14.99...  Go read their forum on "War'Dec" and noobs killing.. You will get the same theme message.

words can't xplain how insane it is for new players to start.  you can read  all the fanboy threads.. but even fan boys will be hard to explain this simple logic.  This is what you are paying 14.99 for:

More experience players can kill you anytime.  If they can't, they can do the following things:

1. war'dec you (granted permission to kill you anywhere) 
2. Sudicide attack, (attacking you at their lost)

you can read all the explainations, justification, and EvE's "love me" threads.. but the bottom line, if someone want to kill you... THERE IS NOT THING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.. what does is this mean? imagine you spent 1 mth working for cash to buy a nice shield, sword, armors and spells, but out of nowhere some more high level player just gank on you.  Once you are dead, all items are gone and so is your 1 mth hard labor!!

 

it is your 14.99... you are more than welcome to throw it away.  EVE older players are looking for more noobs to kill.. please  be a victim!!!

FLS & POTBS Community,
 I remember when I got a warning for posting, "the pink elephant in the room is SOE” in the POTBS beta forum.
When FLS announced the partnership with SOE, everyone in BETA was really angry. The outcry was so loud that Mr. Rusty has to make a statement on this subject...
Cute's Top 5 assumptions regarding FLS and SOE backdoor deal that killed POTBS:
5- "Release soon, so it won't compete with other next gen MMO, such as Pirate of the Caribbean Online"
4-"Release this game within the time frame of the movie, while hype is still hot"
3-"We (SOE) are the world leader for MMO business, just look at SWG and Vanguard"
2-"SOE will enable FLS to focus on the creativity and maintaining the game, while SOE will enable FLS to get rich in Marketing, advertisement, promotion and subscription"
1-"Because we are Sony Online Entertainment (SOE)... we got great PowerPoint presentation, oh by the way, we own SWG and Vanguard...so FLS, you can be rich too... what ya say??" [Little giggle in the boardroom]

It is nice to meet you.  This discussion is in context of PvP failure.  I think most of us agreed that the map is too small to do open PvP.  That is why it feels like level 50 is everywhere.

I think you all remember how much flame I got for suggestions that POTBS was not ready to be released.  POTBS needs to work on core Economy, Crafting, and PvP system.  Also, everyone hate my "manual crafting" idea...  but since POTBS didnt listen to any ideas. It doesn't really matter.

It doesn't matter if no one listen to me now, since I am not a member anymore.  But, why keep your head in the sand?  

I remember one article I wrote questioning habor tax, I was wondering why is it 15%, vice 75%.  At 15%, no one care about losing a PORT.  

you know what.. thinking about it {the problems}.. just make me even more mad... I am not going to waste anymore time.. trying to help... good luck POTBS!!!

Duh!!

We told you all the reasons in BETA... I know the development team is reading.. 

-Lesson learned for the next company... listen to your testers!!!
-Don't rush into releasing your game...5years wait, so what is 1 more year?
-Why SOE? Nvm.. u didnt listen...

Recap again for the general public who was not in the beta forum war....

Economy
 -Crafting is too simple, {2 mouse clicks, viola!!!}
 -Anyone can master the ecnomy in a short period. {days, vice mths}
 -Poor Market watch
 -Loot, rewards, risk system is not cleared
 -No manual crafting
 -No other type of Market, you got PvE and PvP only
 

PvP
-Map is too small for local PvP
-why Lev 50 ships is the king?
-All ships are combat, even if u dont need to do combat
-No naval fleet stratgey, either you are in the fight or not in the fight
-Any ships can travel from anywhere less than 1 hour

Misc
-Not listening to the testers
-Avatar combat was not ready {but that is not the issue, we know it is a ship game}
-ASSUMING you know the consumers better than mmorg.com's readers
-Chat room IU is horrible... (I wrote a long serie just on chat)

POTBS Beta testing was such a huge disappointment, I was actually afraid to contribute my heart into another BETA. The biggest problem with POTBS beta testing was that we felt that the development team was not listening to us. I am sure it was just a very bad perception and misunderstood on our part.  However, Requiem doesn’t really have this problem, but at least we don’t have negative perception on each other.
Forum Community: 
This game knows it audiences. When you log in to their website, you are required to do age verification. After all, it is an adult game (17+)!! The message board is universally open. Sometime, gaming companies explain too much about stuff. In my opinion, I think Requiem either doesn’t care, they don’t have enough staff, or they are just letting people be adults. I am not sure if this working, but at least it doesn’t have a negative perception you will find in other MMORPG beta.
Errors/Glitch/Lag:
Since, I am no wiz on the computer; I have to say that I didn't experience anything that required me to reboot my computer. This beta looks like the final product.
Game Play:
This is a Korean game without the Koreanness. At first I was really annoyed by the huge amount of monsters in respawning area. But after a week of recommendations in forum, I did notice a huge decline in monsters. At the beginning, this game was similar to "sword of the new world” with the use of monster respawn, but it appears that the developers did listen to the Beta tester. Now, I think the monster spawning is similar to WOW, LOTRO and SWG.   The control and IU is similar to other western MMO. The control movement is similar to Guild Wars, not the same, but similar.
Best feature that is really unique from other MMORPG.
This MMO offers something that is very scary at night time, Requiem called this NIGHTMARE. I guess the best way for me to explain a Nightmare is something that has gone horribly wrong during late at night—if you are outside of a town all alone and without friends in sight, you will die!!
Storyline, Quest, Plot of the game:
-I have no clue about plot [believe me I look everywhere]
-I don’t know why we are killing monsters, or how it gets there
-I don’t really know why I am doing quest. [All the quests are just there to help me level]
Beside going back and forth and lack of storyline, the quests are pretty simple. The false senses of simplicity of the quests cause me to be in extreme shocked when I ran into Nightmare situation. 

Sound & Music:
This game is not EVE online. You will not be hearing an award winning techno music in the background. The music is in the game, no more and no less. I know it is boring, but what can I say.
PVP:
I think the PVP has some major technical issues. Since Beta test opening, I can only get into PvP arena only one time per day. I am not sure what is going with thisproblem. 
 If you play Elder Scroll’s OBLIVION, Requiem’s PvP reminds me of the Arena fight in the Imperial City, it is not 1v1, but it is group vs group. The PvP system is truly fun!! Getting a PVP fight is as easy as talking to an NPC. Once you have spoken to an NPC, you will be on a waiting list. Unlike LOTRO, you don’t have to be at the right level or find a magic pool. Also, you don’t have to pretend to be a monster. You fight with the armor and weapon that you brought to the arena.
Once you are in this small PVP map, it is really capture the flag game. So far I have only played 8v8, but the game has option up to 64 vs 64. 

The fun part of PvP is not just killing the people, but it is realization that your character is weaker than your opponent. I spent 90% of my time doing quest and killing monsters in the PvE area [main game] so I can betterment my character for the next fight. When you think about PvP as much as I am, then you realize that the Korean grinding system is not so bad after all.

You have no idea how MANY beta testers voice their opinions with development team... go read any post from BETA testing days...especially my post, Cute.

I am an EVE Player that BETA test for POTBS, I wanted this game to be successful so it can compete against EvE. It has alot of potentials to derail EVE 's mighty ego. 

I posted alot of stuff in POTBS Beta forum prior to the release, but I relized that these guys [POTBS dev team] did not care or want to listen to us.  Why would you not listen to your beta testers?

If you go back to BETA forum in  POTBS, you would ve seen alot of debates about PVP system and Economy. 

Some of the area we discussed in the past:

-The size of the map is too small... to have a succesful PvP in an open ended game.. you really need a super huge map.  Not everyone in POTBS want to do a PVP, and not everyone like to be ganked.  A super huge map will separate the battlefield from everything else.

+In EVE, the fights are usually started with small ships in a small localize PvP area, somewhere within this super huge PVP zone.  

+Distance matters, in EVE, it takes a fleet of battleships hours to get to the battlefield.  In POTBS, it takes the same huge ships only a few minutes to arrive at a fight scene.

So the problem is that you will never have a localize fight.  In doesn't matter what you do, sooner or later, a level 50 ship would be ganging on you.   PvP in POTBS doesn't consider fleet stratgic movement, all fights are pure BRUTE forces.  You can't really sneak up on anyone.  Either you are in the fight or you are not.  EVE consider fleet movement to the battlefield as a strategic operations that would take into consideration of a fight.  That is why a battleship may take many real world hours and days to move across space.  So fight locations matter!!      POTBS doesnt consider this at all...       We told you this in BETA!!!

-Economy is too simple... I beat this dead horse many time, most of the POTBS members always slaming me for it. But look who is laughing now.  Why not add fishing, wood cutting, aka "manual labor" into the game.  Some EvE people like to mine asteriod belt for years.  I can see POTBS doing the same thing w/ fishing.  But POTBS wants the economy to be simple/// i.e click a mouse and wait. 

The problem with this economy system is that it doesnt separate the PVP players from the economy players.  In EVE, the economy players are strategically different from the combat players.  In POTBS, everyone can be a economy player and everyone can be a combat player-- It is all the same.  By not separating the gaming path, it diluted the PVP area with everyone else.  I always wonder why have zone at all?

-Ships... in POTBS there is only 1 type of ship--combat ships.  You don't have a fishing ship, a hauling boat, a speed boat, a show boat, a cruise boat, escport and a recon boat... all POTBS' boats do the same thing--combat.  In EvE, it is not pratical to do RECON, or HAUL mission with your biggest ship.  But in POTBS, that is not an option.  It doesn't matter what you do, you will be sailing in a combat ship.  I don't know how many time I asked for a fishing boat in this game.  Why can't I just go fishing in the open sea??  We asked for this in BETA!!!

If you combine these 3 aspects into a small PVP area, the result is a poor PVP game.   It is not too late....

This problem won't happen if you stick with the best, EVE Online... why are you dating a fat ugly girl? when u can date a nice easy hot chick in space....

POTBS' PVP is great.. the sea is not big enough...You will get ganked

 

EvE is soooo huge, you can ninja your way around... U can play EVE for 2 years and never ever see a PvP zone...
