Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: Hybrid Revenue Model Adopted

I'd say his problem is he's an Apple User, not used to multitasking =P While something downloads you sit there and look at the download bar until it's done. |

I played... well... not true, I tried to play the beta. Tried during 3 different days, 2 hours each during different times, and never got to play more than 5 minutes without getting disconnected because the zone wasn't reachable. If this is what they offer than definitely not a game for me. Never made it out of the tutorial because every time I logged in I either fell through the world and restarted at the beginning or got locked somewhere and couldn't move until I reconnected, fell through the world and started from the beginning. I was really looking forward to this game, but either it didn't like my connection or the game simply isn't ready... I vote for number two. |

Originally posted by huskerman34 I think there is one thing easily forgotten though, FF11 came out in 2001 (or 2002). That is now over 8 years ago, and in that time MMOs changed. It's like saying "The new Porsche only drives 40 miles per hour, but give it a chance, the one released in 1920 wasn't faster!". SquareEnix created a game that is, no doubt, extremely beautiful, but the content of the game is far below anything any other current-gen MMO offers or offered at release. On top of that the UI, for a game FIRST released on PC, is nothing more than a disgrace for a company like that. Even on a PS3 this UI would feel slow and irritating, but for a PC game it is simply not acceptable. In my opinion, 14 has the chance to be a good game. But improvement to the UI, as they tried with the last patch, is not the way to go... It needs to be scratched and started from the beginning. Or, for gods sake, allow UI modding. Doesn't need the depth of WoW modding (so the game plays itself in the end), but give it EQ2 quality. Make it possible for people to create a UI and controls that make the game playable, since SE seems not to be able to do that. The game has a chance, Final Fantasy fans are not your generic MMO players, people still try FF11 nowadays, and you still have new players, where a game nearly released at the same time (see Anarchy Online or Everquest... yes, both were off several years, but you get the idea) are fighting to keep the current subs, let alone find new ones. The name itself, though, is not a guarantee for everlasting success. Not with Cataclysm coming out (which, whether or not it's good, will monopolize the MMO market for a few months), and with Guild Wars 2 being an MMO that seems to bring so many new ideas to the market that 14 feels like it should have come out ten years ago. Not to even mention Rift and all the others. Simple as it is, FF14 might have the same amount of content 11 did when it came out, but that was 8 years ago (go flame me if I'm off by a year), and might have the same UI, but that's like denying evolution ever happened... Be a SquareEnixCreationist, but I prefer my evolved MMOs. |

They probably noticed that those that moved to FFXIV now all come back to XI, because XIV really sucks. And decided to give the returners a bit of food =P |

You are completely right. I have sent emails to certain people working here at MMORPG.com and I still get the same almost autmated BS excuses of how things are done. The right way would have been to have the first 100 work this way , and reserve the other 400 to active members, not just one day wonder F5 mashing people that have all the time in the world to sit here. Hell I wonder if many of them wore Depends to make it through the time they waited. Most people have lives and can t commit this time to that, but they don t give a crap at all.
I think it's funny though, the one day that the working people have time to do this, they don't do it. They only do it on "working" days, so those taking the typical 9 to 5 job have no chance. Just hate that decision. |

Originally posted by ktchnflrrpst I'm not seeing this out of the point of view of the company though, I am quite aware a games debug mode and the typical stress test offers a good amount of information, but to say it as ArenaNet does (taken from Wikipedia, as they took the original statement down)
ArenaNet considered that player expectations for open beta tests of MMORPG had changed, and the beta was no longer used to test the game but to trial a nearly finished game prior to purchase
Thus the reason why GW2 will have a "betatest" very close to the full release, and it will be considered a trial for them, so they said. It's the point of view of the so called betatesters that is pitiful, I remember, being a betatester for APB (and trying my damn best to make that game worthwile... and obviously failing) how the community treated the newly arrived Fileplanet-Betatesters... I don't think I have to detail that here, as you can probably quite imagine. And seeing how the Rift community is treated, and how VIP-beta-accounts for all beta-states (which is already an odd phenomenon, seeing that you would have beta-accounts that download the software yet only play in very limited timeframes) are handed out like precious fan-packages, I simply feel like we should stop calling these things Beta. Or our understanding of the word has to change. Please feel free to correct me on that point of view, I know some share it, I know some don't... But I think we can all agree that ignoring the active community, the active forum members and everyone who is interested in the game, and handing codes out to those that hammer the fastest on F5 is wrong. |

I think the problem is that Betas are not Betas anymore... that was long... long ago, nowadays a beta is a free trial, a chance to try the game before it's out. How many of the "beta" testers still file bugreports, document how to reproduce a bug they found, or even actively participate on the forums? 70% of them install, try the game, and then uninstall cause "it's so buggy", and "it's gonna fail anyway". 20% test it until it goes live, and another 10% maybe actively do anything... It's just how it is, and MMORPG with their "100 first" jumps on the bandwaggon, turning a beta from a chance for the community to help improve a game to an event to get free trials...
It's pitiful. |

Final Fantasy XIV: Free Trial Extended
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/17/10 12:43:01 PM
At one point SquareEnix will understand that "Free Trial" means "Free Trial", not "Free month after you buy a game that isn't worth the DVD is was burnt onto". How can it be free if you have to buy the game in the first place? |

Yeah, it doesn't seem to work at all anymore... sadly. You could even use it to buy cheaper or not available games on steam (if a publisher decides not to publish a game worldwide, or if it's a censored version in some countries). Cause Steam believed you are in USA if you used the program... doesn't seem to work at all anymore though, I can't run mabinogi either now. |

I think using wireless lan, even at home, is a requirement for it to work. I am not sure if you can get it to work on a cable connection. If you have the possibility to use Wifi, do it... then you can use that program easily. |

There is one quite effective way to play... www.anchorfree.com offers a "Hotspot Shield", which creates a VPN (virtual private network). In return for putting a small one inch high ad-bar in your browser (which firefox and adblock plus removes nearly completely) you have an US IP suddenly, works fine to do specific stuff, like play MapleStory US, play Mabinogi, or even buy things on Steam you can't at home because they toss the localized version at you... Even after roughly three hours of checking every information on the internet I couldn't find any negative reports about it, besides the banner and the 10 GB / month limitation it seems to have no negative side effects, even CNet suggested it. It's officially made to make surfing on public Wifi hotspots safe, but can easily be used to hide your non-US IP. I can only suggest trying it out. It works perfect for me, and even the professionals suggest it, so it can't be that bad... Damn I love Mabinogi =P |

If it's like the achievements in Lotro... then I can fully understand it =P Just I can't imagine playing lotro full time...
And what do you mean, it costs nothing, I think you only had one? So isn't that your soul you gave away or anything? hehe
