Oh I am sure this game will not fail. Was it not 500k that the need to make some $ out of it? I don't play WoW nor did I ever play GW1 or plan on playing gw2 but IMO SWTOR will lose lots and lots of players after max. 3 month.

Bite me after the last weekend I cancelled my preorder. TOR has it's moments. I really enjoy some of the cutscenes but overall I don't like it that much to buy it. Maybe after the first expansion..............................

So back to skyrim and battlefield 3 (yeah I know no MMOs), oh and I would rate it with 3/5. =)

I am not a Star Wars purist, but I am an organic pvevp mmorpg enthusiast.  This additional instanced, redundant content, 4v4 UT2004-like, lobby-system, third-person shooter, skirmish mini-map game-play is an addition to the overly instanced, emphasized and promoted game-play, that is furthest from my idea of Massively-Multiplayer.

finally. someone who can make an objective evaluation without letting their bioware fanatism get in the way.

Ironic considering the non-objective evaluations by people who let their TOR hate/ GW2 butt kissing get in the way.

you are absolutely right. its not only a rape to the lore, its a violation to what a proper MMORPG is.

Sorry, but anyone that thinks SWG was a great game while whining about TOR "raping" Star Wars lore is a hypocrite. TOR is much more true to the Star Wars universe than Galaxies ever was.

SWG pre-NGE was as true to the Star Wars Universe as it could be.

It was a true sandbox, with virtually no content (other than repeatable mission system, bounty system, badge collecting).

People had to create their own content. That was it's strength! It was totally driven by the community itself!

C'mon my immersion in swg got blown out of the airlock within the first hour after release. You know that shit with overcrowding creature handlers or pikeman running around and we better don't even talk about combat......

Now after years of MMOs I have only one question for the game, is it fun!

After watching this video from gamescom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=543lyjmr7yM&feature=player_embedded

Let me say, it looks not bad. I like it.

From my pov the are only 2 points in favor for champions online.
One is you have access to power armor and you can create some
really alien looking chars with it, thats it.

In every other point city of heroes is a lot better!

Oh and to some of points like value are you kidding me. Cox is
atm for sale at 1.99$ and goes f2p oh and we better don't compare content that would not even be funny for co.........

Yeah considering that we pay here in europe 150€(~220$). However I paid only 5€ for the pre oder box. I really don't need to buy the CE later on.

Look at the headstart+grace period and think more about a trial with a option to buy the full game later on. :P

Why should the give up on extra $ for server transfers, extra char slots and vanity pets. Think about how much dlc we have seen for all the other bioware games.

EA will love it to sell you a extra pack with new races a new speeder bike and shiny lightsaber crystals. =)

I bought it from Steam yesterday and after a few hours of play, I removed my CC information from it and won't even play the 29 more days on it. The ground combat is horrible....if you even get to do some that is.

And if you want a better deal, check out the same one on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Online-Deluxe-Download/dp/B0044DEPZA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1306669157&sr=8-4

Yes ground combat is a big weakness. Tip use a full engineering away team with turrets.

However good news for you. The add a full new groundcombat to it next month.
So you can chose RPG or FPS mode for it:

dev post...
[...]
btw... not sure if this has been mentioned, but the mouse-click combat has a few additional bells and whistles.

We've added two hotkeys (currently mapped to R and T - but remappable) which allow your Left, Middle, and Right mouse buttons to temporarily access the first 3 slots of the 2nd and 3rd power tray in order to fire off powers.

Example.

Tray 1:
Slot 1 = Primary Weapon Fire
Slot 2 = Secondary Weapon Fir
Slot 3 = Tertiary Fire (most often its rifle butt or palm strike)

Tray 2: (Tap R to temporarily replace Tray 1)
Slot 1 = Kit Power 1 (e.g. Grenade)
Slot 2 = Kit Power 2 (e.g. Smoke Grenade)
Slot 3 = Captain Power 3 (e.g. Targeting Optics)

Tray 3 (Tap T to temporarily replace Tray 1)
Slot 1 = Stimpack
Slot 2 = Shield Recharge
Slot 3 = Resucitate

How it works in shooter mode:
As you move the reticle onto a target, the target and reticle light up. Clicking LMB,RMB fires the weapon as you'd expect in any shooter.

However, lets say I'm shooting - shooting - shooting but now want to throw a grenade
I tap the R key - it temporarily maps Tray 2 to my mouse buttons - so that the next time I click LMB - it throws a grenade where my reticle is aiming and then immediately switches back to Tray 1 weapon mode.
If I didn't want to throw the grenade I can tap R again.

Similarly, if I get in trouble and need to heal - I can quickly tap T-LMB and use my stimpack all while keeping my WASD going.

It is turning out to be pretty slick, but I'm very eager to get your feedback on it.

Also - the PVP playtest today made me realize how huge range changes are now ... sniper rifles can be deadly - but boy does that red targeting laser draw attention to yourself
.
.
.
This is not an NGE situation, this was the first thing we thought of when we went to revamp ground combat. The addition of shooter mode isn't fundamentally changing the game, the prior play type still remains. The main change comes in the class table updates, weapon updates, and critter tuning.

We've heard from players, reviewers, and our own internal discussions that ground combat as it is now isn't up to snuff. We've gone ground up (no pun intended) on this system. Everything from the background math, player facing math, fx, animations, and audio, we left no stone unturned.

With this change we hope players will talk about ground combat and space combat in the same breath, as the reasons to play STO. When you engage in an epic space battle and have to beam down I don't want 95% of our player base to sigh, we want you to be psyched to get in there and fight!

Anyone else seeing an announcement saying that this game will go F2P comming in very soon?

I don't thin k they could scream it louder.  With Atari divesting, it may be an attempt to pad the server population in order to up the stats to make a sale more appealing also. I think the F2P is not a good move at this point. After Cryptic is sold proably more likely.

It's still a good price , but i wouldn't play past the 30 days.  I think I'll grab a beer and sit and observe what Cryptic and Atari will do next. This may prove interesting.

I doub't it. Seems you miss all the other "fire" sales in the last few month. Amazon(com) sold the gold version for 5$ in dec and in march the german amazon store sold it for 3.97€. I know it because I bought it to add another 30 days to my account.

The still stack and a extra XL t-shirt for the gold version is not bad.

Yes I am even crazy enough and bought for 2.75€ the deluxe sto version from steam. Add that this deal included 500 atari points and you get even cash back from it.

Well I like the remastered stuff like the doomsday mission: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FePdEi_f0I

I don't care if the go F2P or if the have a monthly sub of less then 5$ this way..

update another sale this time again from amazon for 3$  http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Online-Deluxe-Download/dp/B0044DEPZA/

I don't know about the PS3 version but I prefer even to play the PC DCU with a PS3 gamepad. The combat is much more fun (brawler/mind) to do so.

Overall not a bad game but you can see it's more a console game then a pc game and no I won't buy it. I prefer more the play-style of CoX or WoW over this one. :p

Because it is important to move around  the world, he you can't even jump down 10cm in the ffxiv world. No sorry you can't go down there or up over there because the don't allow it.

For me you run into so many invisible walls because the program does not allow you to go this path down there because you have no way to jump down that way.  Bad design. :P

Well the last Star Trek show I did enjoy was DS9 and so far I like STO. Played only the last 3 days in closed beta.

Can't say much how good it will be in the long run but honestly the last MMOs that I played more then 2 month are EQ1 and SB and I really don't care if the game don't last longer not with so much other games around that want to be played like ME2, AvP & B:BC2.

True the ground combat looks in a weird way like CO, special when a Gorn throws a rock at you but the environment I have seen in the first missions looks much better then CO did. Space Battles are absolutely fun so far. I really enjoy every minute of it.

No doubt STO could have much more going, special with the ST background and some systems like the genesis don't work so good atm.

I had such high hopes for this game. Alas they were dashed & my illusions were torn asunder when I was able to try the beta and really experience all the game had to offer (which isn't much).
For a MMO, it isn't very massive. The main zone for instance (no pun intended lol) has an instance cap of 100! That's it. Which is pitiful for such a large zone. Not to mention all the loading screens & having to decide instances every single time gets old fast & kills immersion.
- point 2. You change zones (say to level up) and then you go back to the zone your team was in. BUT if that zone nears the instance cap it wont let you in. EVEN IF THE REST OF YOUR TEAM IS IN IT. So you are forced to either wait for someone to exit that zone which can take a looong time, or else ask your whole team to change zones. AND IF they actually change zones, they are transported far away from the quest and have to essentially start over. Horrible system.
.
.

You have few points but just a note from a other standpoint.

The instance did have higher player limits. The started with around 200 but then a outcry happen on the forums from other players that needed to wait for a quest or did spent to much time waiting for respawn. I guess teaming is so hard for some....

The even said the will change it later again, when the places are not overcrowded, including tweaking respawn...

Switching Zones, yeah I see your problem. Look at me, I like it for the point you hated because with the instance switch you travel back to the entrance point. So you save travel time to hit the powerhouse, fly to a other zone or sell/craft stuff. ;)

Thinking of making a guild just for rich people and we can buy all booster packs and extra stuff and none will stand a chance. Hows that for balance? Over and out :P

Nah I will hire some chinese farmers that do that stuff and can multibox for my amusement, that's cheaper. ;)

I saw a video interview with Bill and it stated that any cosmetic upgrades you can buy in the store can be earned in the game, as well as other little tidbits like extra character slots, name change, etc.  Said items will probably not be game breaking to give it an unfair advantage over someone who doesn't buy cryptic bucks.  That being said, not everybody can buy cryptic bucks due to one issue or another so all those items being in game will give those players a chance to acquire some neat looking stuff.  But like I said before, don't expect any items to be giving boosts over another player in PvP or make your superhero super powerful on a raid scale.  The devs know that is what can break a game.

QFT. The things you can buy are either purely cosmetic, or earnable ingame. Stop whining, you don't have to use the MT, and it just gives more money for developing content.

Not true. Even Bill Roper has a problem:

TTH
[...]
The idea is wanting to be able to have things there that players can get if they want to, but they don’t negatively impact the balance of the game. It’s not like we’re expecting players to go and purchase things through micro-transactions that then give them some huge leg up.
.
.
Right. So for us, the things we’re looking at with micro-transactions are more along the lines of being fun for players to have that aren’t going to be doing anything to disrupt or upset the balance of the game, or give someone who decides to use micro-transactions any kind of leg up on anybody else.

So does he mean the will still give players a minor leg up or none at all. :p

play.com pre order bonus item
[...]

Inborn Tenacity - Damage resistance to Physical Damage types and small chance of a 10's effect that will improve your damage resistance.
.
.

Yeah I know, we can get this kind of item too ingame in some way later if what Bill says is true but if the add that stuff with RMT...........

No clue. But check if you use the correct information. Your ncsoft master login (for the CoX account) can have a different login then the CoX client.

Oh and maybe try the US trial. The freedom server alone has a higher population as all european servers...

You can download the US or EU update here: download.cityofheroes.com/

But if the did not change this in the last years, you can't play with a ncsoft EU CoX account in the US.

You still need a key for a US account........

Yeah only 4 active seems a little boring. I really hope we will see at last a combo system to make this powers even more powerful or change them into something different.
