What's the difference between Missions and Quests?
Lion's Arch (General) « Guild Wars 11/21/07 1:03:59 PM
Once again the GW Community comes through! Thanks everyone! We had a blast last night doing the first two missions (The Northern Wall and Fort Rurik)... I couldn't believe how much fun I was having with my girlfriend and a henchie as we ran panicked back to the wall to report the Charr were hot on our tail... -- and wow, the epic battle and the catapults were fantastic as well... Yet another reason why I cannot believe I never picked this game up before... Why did I spend 2.5 years raiding the same bosses over and over again in WoW when I could have been having more fun with no commitment and schedule! GW, Im a believer!

What's the difference between Missions and Quests?
Lion's Arch (General) « Guild Wars 11/20/07 5:17:16 PM
My girlfriend and I got a "Primary Quest" called "Defend the Wall" (or something like that) shortly after arriving in post-searing, but after handing it in, we didn't get a follow up. We are currently doing a myriad of quests around the area but can't get another "Primary" quest to drive the story forward... After some research I found out that each area has "missions" that you complete to advance the story? Is that true? Or is it quests that do that? Where do I do these missions? How come some areas have class and level and party # above players heads but others dont? --and why do some zones say "Cooperative" in the fade-in zone title? |

Hello again guys! :) If you read my other thread you know I'm new to the GW game with my GF... should we buy these packs? Or is it sort of cheating if you havent already played through the game on your own ? *EDIT: I guess I dont really know how they work? Do they immediately make all skills with the exception of elites available to you? |

Noob questions from a new Guild Wars player ... (Old EQ/WoW player)
Lion's Arch (General) « Guild Wars 11/14/07 12:39:28 PM
Another question.... where are the official GW forums? Are there any? Maybe I'm blind but I couldnt find ANY on Guildwars.com. Oh - one more question, how important is it to get the upgraded armor set from collector's pre-searing? Do you get better armor immediately following the searing? |

Thanks so much! Coming from WoW I'm sort of conditioned into expecting an uber attitude (complete with l33t-speak) and so far the GW community has been so helpful it's actually been astonishing. We are very excited about playing and thanks for the guild invites via post and PM! I think right now we are just getting our feet wet and have a lot of thinking and growing to do in-game before we take on a guild invitation but we appreciate all of the help and kindness! After raiding 4-5 nights a week for 4-5 hours a night for nearly 3 years this has been a refreshing change... The pleasure I get out of blasting through baddies with my GF is a lot better than loot-greed, waiting for a raid spot, or wiping on a boss all night... See you in game! |

Noob questions from a new Guild Wars player ... (Old EQ/WoW player)
Lion's Arch (General) « Guild Wars 11/13/07 3:53:08 PM
Amazing ! Thanks for the replies! I guess my question was - is it possible to finish the game/campaigns with just my lady? By your response I would assume "Yes!" which is fantastic. A few other questions -- I noticed no armor really drops... so is armor ONLY crafted? Is there a huge difference between all of the armor sets or is it just cosmetic? I saw some elite armor sets that look really cool! Are these "upgrades" to existing sets? Do you collect them a piece at a time or do you get them all at once? ...and weapons - are there crazy legendary/rare weapons? Or is it again, mostly about cosmetics and your playstyle/skill? Excited! |

Noob questions from a new Guild Wars player ... (Old EQ/WoW player)
Lion's Arch (General) « Guild Wars 11/13/07 2:36:34 PM
I quit WoW after I met my girlfriend, and have since been buying games that are two-player so we can experience them together... She has a strong aversion to the MMO lifestyle/raiding, so we have been playing NWN2, Hellgate London, and coop-Halo 3... I picked us up two copies of Guild Wars & EotN, and our hope is that we can play through the entire campaign alone at night together. Without the need of other party members or a guild. She only really likes playing with me and doesnt like "the group dynamic"... Im trying to figure out a way to keep her happy and get my game fix at the same time. So far -I LOVE guild wars and cant believe I never played it before... the graphics DESTROY WoW's in all ways... Cant wait for GW2... I also like how this game is about skills and combos and whats on your bar -- not what gear you raided for. Any and all help would be appreciated... we are VERY new to the GW experience but again, we are looking for more solo PVE... (well two of us)... Thanks! DMXKREW *EDIT* - I'm a warrior/monk, shes a ranger/mesmer |

Sure it's also fun to play, RP, craft, explore, whatever - but for me, I want my character to look cool, and I want to WORK for it. I want my appearance in-game to reflect my accomplishments... and for the record, I'm really sick of uneducated WoW/EQ noobs just brushing that off as "this dude grinded 5 months to get these"... as you stated above. It isnt a GRIND. It is teamwork, dedication, devising strategies, and exploring new game mechanics. Taking down Cthun with 39 of my friends was an ENORMOUS accomplishment that required a tight bond with my teammates and lots of planning... It wasnt hitting boars in Elwynn Forest repeatedly. A game that can provide that kind of challenge with equally impressive rewards is a game I enjoy. That isnt to say that other should feel the same way. I raid 5 nights a week. I also make a great living and have a beautiful family that I love. I have a fantastic and rewarding life and my game-life in WoW is equally as rewarding. Your above statement is completely unfounded and furthermore, uneducated. Learn about the games you are speaking about before you take a hard accusatory stance. Thanks.. DMXKreW!

Does LOTRO remind you of the old days?
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 5/02/07 4:30:51 PM
Few games have made me feel "involved" or struck me with that magic nostalgia... Im happy to say that LOTRO has done that, surprisingly well... The community is kind and helpful, the lore is respected and non-RPers (myself included) find themselves RPing because it comes naturally to the environs... I find myself staring at the screen and hitting f12 and just looking around and taking it all in. I find myself playing slower than my usual grind/power-game/recipe stat technique and reading the quests and exploring. I actually played with Music, and spent an hour in Bree RPing with two elf characters laughing about how awful I was at playing the horn. I stared at the blinking lights of the nearing city of my first ferry ride. This is magic, capturing, convincing... well done Turbine. Reminds me of Ultima Online definitely... Even Ultima 7. For some reason also brings to mind the beauty and vastness I saw in single player games such as Moonstone (Amiga), Hero's Quest (Quest For Glory I), Kings Quest III, and touches on the childlike escapism I felt when reading these books and drawing hobbits in my school notebooks... Great post, OP. /Agreed! CEREMONY - Dwarf Guardian - Nimrodel. |

Originally posted by peenk LOL. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. Spoken (most likely) from someone who has NEVER raided successfully or accomplished anything in any MMO beyond PVP or solo-grind/crafting. For me, MMO means MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER, and part of the challenge therein means working together with large groups of people to accomplish LARGER goals for great rewards (rare as hell loot). I enjoy showing off my accomplishments, being a part of server firsts, and competing with other guilds for progress. A noob, however, I'm not -- I have have played MMO's (not counting MUDs) since UO in 97, and succesfully raided through EQ, EQII, SWG, and WoW - clearing every major instance and boss, (Yes Naxx, AQ40, Kara, Gruuls). So putting me down in that regard is bullshit my friend. Everyone is entitled to their own play style, so try to have respect for the fact that there are people (a great many of them) in every MMO that are there to accomplish more than the next guy and push the limits of character advancement and tear through the endgame. A person who hates the idea of rare drops is probably someone who doesnt have the time (or skill) to obtain them. Now, lets please get back to discussing TCOS. |

Im a TCOS noob, so help me out if I'm missing something here... but:
I just heard about this game, downloaded every trailer, screenshot, and read every interview on the web... The artwork alone sucked me in -- distinctly European, harkening back to my days in highschool reading Heavy Metal magazine... the illustrated realism was beautiful -- The skill system and class system, body types, races... Post apocalyptic... I was thinking "more more!" Until Iearned that gear has ZERO impact on your character's abilities. Stop right there. "WHAT?!" One of the *greatest* joys in any MMO is showing off your hot new rare drop in the village. This sets you apart from other players and makes you feel good. If clothing and armor sets in TCOS serve little purpose other than to cosmetically set you apart from your peers, then WTF exactly is the point? Seeing someone walk by you in difficult to obtain endgame gear is a rush... you want to get to that level (maybe), or obtain that gear yourself. Vice-Versa as well.. walking around in sick endgame gear makes you feel good. Is this game basically going to be Halloween? You dont know who the hell is what class cause anyone can wear everything, and its just costume dress up? You can put points in skills and weapons, but so what? Basically everyone is the same with little reward for endgame accomplishments, rare drops, or crafting. Lame. Please prove me wrong here.... ??? I really wanted to love this game. |

Help a recovering WoW-addict find a new game, or new life... Is there anything?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/03/07 4:46:34 PM
The moderation is the hardest part for me... Having levelled 5 chars to 60 and seen every endgame boss, tier 4, etc... It is very hard to play "casually" and sit out on raid night, knowing those loots are there, knowing that endgame is there. But yeah ... it's tempting... just to be able to talk to my old buds again and feel active in that world.
Exercise is definitely on, hitting the gym 3-4 nights a week and I do work full time on top of this... I guess there really is nothing like WoW if you are a real lover of the game. |

My first post... Hey everyone!
I have pretty much played it all. UO since 97, EQ, Shadowbane, FFXI, SWG, Ragnarok, etc etc... Found WoW in 04 and didnt look back. Played 7 nights a week, became a hardcore raider, and beat the hell out of the endgame, ending with Gruul's Lair, a gquit, and a farewell to WoW one month ago. In that time, I have sort of freaked out... I have played FFXII, God of War 2, Oblivion, Crackdown, Titan Quest and even Diablo in an attempt to gain some sort of game satisfaction back in my life, and have failed at all turns... I have researched UO Private shards, checked in on developments in Betas and even played LOTRO and Granada Espada and Dungeon Runners... Nothing is doing it for me... I miss the comradery, I miss the socializing... etc... Nothing feels like Home like WoW did and Im afraid if I go back, even casually, Ill get sucked back into the raiding... I simply CANNOT dedicate 5-7 nights of my life, 4-5 hours a night any longer to the raiding endgame.. I would love to find a game that lets me advance far without having to enlist in a virtual army. Id love to find something with the atmosphere and feel of WoW... I dont know -- Maybe these are just withdrawals but Im beginning to go nuts over here for want of something that has a lasting appeal... Where I feel like im a part of something cool without feeling like im WORKING. Help! DMXKrew! |
