I think not. Have I played completely different MMO's prior to WOW that I've enjoyed far more like Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies? Yes.

From January 11th, 2011 to December 20th 2014 I have not spent a dime on a new MMO and it's just saddening the state of the genre, truly is. But, as thread states, is it my fault? I'll continue to fund WOW and Blizz for what they've done. Let's be real, if WOW was not today, what else I would be left to play out there?

Many blame WOW for the state of the genre and how many copy it, but that's not my or Blizz fault. So, it is what it is...P2W and cheating/botting has dominated this genre over the years. Rushed, hyped products with little value and empty promises...2014 imo was the best example for most MMO gamers to truly see the state of the genre and learn to appreciate and value some of the few choices we have left like WOW, Path of Exile (not a MMO but close) as example.

P.S: I truly was into Star Citizen early this year. I was following it closely and hyped, but all the shipmart they have running quickly made me lose any hype I had going for that game. What truly is saddening is that Asian/Korean countries seem far ahead when developing MMO's these days. From Black Desert to Lost Ark...I never even played Blade & Soul. Lineage 3? Idk, it seems like they have a lot going on, which again is good for us gamers.

Free to play is very difficult model to run, but props to SOE for attempting it with Everquest Next...I just have a strong feeling it will backfire. If the game cost like $30 with $7 monthly fee, imo would be the perfect and simple monetizing model that would work for them.

While you enjoy WoW, others find it bored and they are playing the MMOs and games that they enjoy and love.

Yet strangely, as the games get simpler and more casual, the amount of people playing them is increasing massively !

The "problem" is that the average player wants to be entertained. They want to be able to passively consume content without too much effort (like watching TV). In fact, many of them like consuming their game content WHILE watching TV ! Quests are designed so that players can complete a satisfactory number of them in the average half-hour play session.

And there must be a clearly laid-out progression path. Preferably clear enough so that Youtube will have 100 "walkthroughs" posted on launch day !

Open worlds (and sandboxes) are too stressful for the average player. That's why in modern games the concepts of penalties and/or failure have been replaced with scaled rewards (i.e. if you can't fully complete a task, you don't get as much gold as the one who does). The only "risk" that is acceptable is the one without any negative consequence...

No. People have Works, a Real Life, University, Etc. Then pretty much u just have 2 or 3 hs a day to play, sometimes u dont have even an hs, the average Player.  Dont have the real time to spend more than 4 hs everyday in a MMO or Game, Even worse if on those 2 hs u need 1 roaming around an huge sandbox world doing nothing more than, trying to find what to do.

Thats why we have GF, Battlegrounds, Quest lines. Etc etc etc. And thats why the ¨Sandbox¨ is just a game for a really small core group of players.

I'd be all for a new Star Wars MMO. But sandbox this time

It Wont Happen, If we ever get a new SW MMO it wont be sandbox.  And so far the only rumour of a new star wars game is about SWTOR II.

And Battlefront III, but is a FPS not a MMO, and we have nothing more than a teaser about the game.

I already un-subbed... This expansion sounded good, but not only did it screw up a few of my toons it also is a freaking money sink now if you have alts...

It was the same with RohC, i remember the forums full of people complaining about this. A few weeks later, it wasnt even a problem.

Everyone else combined have more people playing than WoW, whats your point?

The top 5 will be:

1) WoW

2) SWTOR (12xp bonus + Revan xpac)

4) ESO

5) Archeage

And at the end I have to question myself what use I have with my money if I have nothing to spend them on? Yes, the game is expensive for what it is and we are living in a world where interests are divided and scattered across so many different things, outside of gaming as well and it's one of the reasons why despite having the technology and tools we don't have those fully open, player driven, persistent, virtual worlds where you'll have so many paths to go, choices to make, that such things as lack of content and things to go will be nonexistent.

So, I'm 100% certain and happy with my decision. I'm just fortunate that I found valid reasons why I'll be very happy with my decision (for me it will be even more expensive since I'll be purchasing new headset with working mic, my parrot owned my old one and microphone makes things a lot easier for both PvP and PvE).

I'll come back later on and share my top reasons why spending every $ is worth it on WOW:WoD and as I've said before you can't go wrong buying the game, especially how things have turned out with the rest of the ARPG/MMORPG over the last couple years. At the end also 44% of the community can't be wrong, while 16-17% were still undecided. I doubt any other game out there has such backing, which by the way is just another extra evidence anyone needs to finalize their decision.

Although, being patient and waiting out a week or so post launch was a good idea. There was DDOS'ing and it was resolved. Everything is fine now. The only thing I'll do later on is give my reasons why I'm getting back to the game and why I'll be enjoying it more than everything else I've been playing this year.

¨I'm getting back to the game¨.  That pretty much say it all, since the only people who love and play WoW is the same people who have been playing the game for the last 10 years.  That make WoW the best game of the planet?, NO, just for the people who have been playing it for the last 10 years.

I can't help but to feel they are making a mistake, a monumental mistake.

On this site over the past couple months we've seen posters say they've had enough of cash shops and cash to gold conversion systems. Even Bill Murphy while reviewing Arche Age asked why not have a premium server? Within the mmorpg genre, I think free to play has ran it's course.

What do you guys think? I'm really looking forward to EQN, but for me it already has 2 strikes against it with the art style and the free to play monetization model.

If you wanna know how the F2P model will be on EQ Next, you should take a look at Planetside 2, is not bad and it have a p2p option.

looks like SWTOR fans should be excited, wonder what he means by "our big year".

Star Wars VII, BW and EA dont want to lose that plane.

q2 = we want to create more solo content including flashpoints that are soloable because most people want to play solo and feel "special"

q3= we want to make more silly items for the cash shop

q4= were changing skills to disciplines to make things easier (ie to stop players making good hybrid builds) with some balancing

q5= its easier to make 1 lot of new content for both factions

q7=everyone wants more story

q8 = next year will be awesome (marketing spin)

Certainly, you dont play the game.

Recently bored to death of ESO endgame (or lack thereof), and I haven't played any of these, but I've been seing that SWTOR and Aion are both much improved since their initial launches.

IIRC all 3 have F2P options, though I'm more than willing to pay for a sub, I don't want the game to be P2W by any means.

Was hoping the community here could lend some direct comparisons to how the PVE, storylines, endgame etc match up between these 3 titles, or any other MMO's you think are a good match.

The only game who is not P2W of those three is SWTOR, also the new xpac is coming in a week, so if you wanna pay a sub, is a good time to try it.

That makes sense.

This is first day sales only. WOD is still not available in Asia?

I guess it tells everything about real numbers (for the first time ever, we have official info):

  1. Everyone who is currently playing bought WoD (show me one person who havent)
  2. No release in asia = asian numbers excluded (for the FIRST time ever!)

WoW real subscribers number: 3.3 million

Shh!. Thats a secret!!. Let just keep talking about 10 Mill of subs.

The PvP on this game was just amazing in the old Codemasters years, The Three faction PvP, Chip Wars and the Politics. Great PvP guilds born on this game, I have great memories and friends from those days.

Now the game is just an insane grind were you need a few years of your life to hit the cap.

Dungeons and Raiding are hardcore.  If you think it's easy, then why has it been 5 months and only 5 guilds are tied for most progressed at 7 bosses of 9?  Eugenic and Enigma have proven themselves in other games, and go at progression 7 days a week.

Outside of Dungeons and Raiding, the game is decidedly NOT hardcore.  Leveling is easy, albeit, same quest system as every other game.  The story is all rather simple to solo through (I have never been into the story of a game, but Wildstar's is quite fascinating to me).  Housing is...housing, how can it be hardcore?  According to Wildstar forums, a lot of people were waiting for the latest content patch to muck about with their house some more.

If you don't like the combat or the art, that will not change, and you should just ignore Wildstar.  And I can only hope that they NEVER go F2P or any derivation therein beyond the CREDD system.

It wont go F2P, it was never an option for Carbine and now they probably dont even have the resourcers. We know where this ship is going.

There wont be a F2P model on this one, more like a Tabula Rasa deja vu.

For the three months ended September 30, 2014 , service and other revenue was $454 million , primarily driven by

FIFA Ultimate Team, Titanfall, and

Battlefield 4 Premium. Service and other revenue for the three months ended September 30, 2014 increased $109 million , or 32 percent, and was driven by a $171 million increase primarily from Titanfall and the FIFA and Plants vs Zombies franchises. This increase was partially offset by a $62 million decrease primarily from the SimCity franchise and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

What is this, 3rd? quarter when they mention revenue increase was offset by decrease in SWTOR. Specifically.

Not good.

Ok, so to break down the investor-business PR speak, here's what's actually being stated.

EA is comparing online gaming service revenue from Q3 2014 to Q2 2014.  There was a 32% increase in revenue ($171 million) over the last 3 months compared to the 3 months before that.  Most of that revenue came from FIFA, which is going like crazy in Europe, Titanfall, which has also been successful, and the ever-reliable Battlefield online revenue, as well as Plants versus Zombies.

"This increase was partially offset by" actually means "we lost money on the following."  Between Sim City and SWTOR, EA took a loss of $62 million.

The bottom line here is that SWTOR is currently costing more money than it is bringing in, and it's losing enough to be named in EA's quarterly earnings statement as being a primary driver of profit loss, along with the Sims.

Now, there would need to be a trend of big losses that lasted for at least 6 months to a year before SWTOR was in any danger of being cancelled, and even then, the licensing agreement for the game likely requires EA to faithfully operate the game and pay royalties for a fixed number of years.

One thing to consider is that if a major change to the game or content expansion is being developed, that would also lead to the game, with low revenue coming in, to run heavily into the red.

Any way you slice it, something is going to give with SWTOR.  Either resources will be spent in order to boost revenue, or major cutbacks will put the game on undeniable life support until such time that EA can legally pull the plug.  Considering the fortune that's already been spent on the game to end up where it is, I'd bet on the latter.  EA took what should have been a great gamble with the Star Wars IP and managed to lose on it.  Like any company that makes a bad business call, they're going to minimize the damage from that mistake.

After almost 3 years is amazing how some people are still waiting for the ¨doom¨  that never came. SWTOR is doing great, dont worry about that, is you care that much about EA financial and how it will lead to the long awaited Doom of SWTOR, just wait till the next Quarter Report.

It wont happen.

Pretty much all the MMOs and online games have ¨repetitive endgame content¨  or ¨daily quest¨, someday it will change but it doesnt look like it will change anytime soon.

But SWTOR after almost 3 years have really a good amount of endgame content or things to do, so it doesnt feel repetitive at all.

Any game is p2w if you pay real money and have an advantage of any sort over players who don't, So, yes, of course ArcheAge is p2w.

But this is where you're wrong

In ArcheAge *everything* can be bought for in game gold - so there is NO advantage from the cash shop by your own definition.

What item in cash shop can you buy that WINS that you cannot buy with gold in AH?

It doesn't exist.

Also by your definition - ALL games are P2W - because in a 100% subscription game paying for multiple accounts will give you an advantage over other players who play a single account - so you are paying RL for an advantage - so all games are P2W.

What about a player who spends RL money on a max level fully geared character in a P2P game - is that not P2W?

So all games are P2W, no?

Just to be clear in a way that everyone can undestand.

P2W = When the Player who spend more money on the CS can earn and do things faster that someone who doesnt.

A few Examples that everyone knows:

In SWTOR a guy who spend $10000 on the cartel market in a single month will have the same benefits that someone who is just paying the sub. we cant say the same about AA.

is AA P2W, YES. like pretty much 99% of the F2P Korean MMOs.

No. Bioware gave out a 1M+ a month "somethings" number recently and a 1M+ a month number last year; based on the wording though it could have been 33k a day or 1M a day.

As said above it could have made a loss - but all we know is "it made less money than last year". Which EA should have expected. Destiny though may have made things worse.

Next quarter they will have assumed another number - probably an uptick due to Revan and then a drop etc.

And there will come a point when their projections indicate that the game "won't be making enough profit". (Could still be day-to-day profitable.) And then they will take other factors into account such as:

  • SW Battlefields next year - some sort of f2p they said; will players move to it if SWTOR is closed maybe?
  • to what extent is SWTOR promoting the brand?
And at that point they will announce that in a years time - or whatever - the game will be closed. Maybe next year maybe at the end of their agreement with Disney.

There is already a SWTOR 4.0 in the works and the only rumour about a new SW MMO is about SWTOR 2. But is pretty much a fake. since BW and SWTOR have now a 10 years license.
