You obviously do not work for the government. So with that being said maybe your company has restrictions on its computers so that maybe the employees can be doing work and be  productive instead of stealing.

I think it's odd that on reviewing this game (even a partial based on the first few levels) you didn't mention the lack of well... Star Trek-ness of this game.

I think that makes the review stronger actually. There have been some claims that the Star Trek fans are demanding too much. Well here is a review that focuses mostly on the gamer aspect, still not up to par. I admit, I am a fan of the series but not everything Star Trek. Even overlooking the nonstop kill everything in space, kill everything on the ground aspect of the game, I found it lacking for the price they were asking for it.

I know where you're coming from, but this is a licenced game, not just "a game". The game play definitely needs the review, and I agree with you that it's shoddy in it's own right.

But it's also supposed to be a "Star Trek" game, and it fails in that aspect too. I'm not a big Trekkie as a sci-fi series it's one of the few I could take or leave (I'd rather see a Babylon 5 or Farscape based game tbh).

The big draw for STO is the franchise after all, if this had been a "insert random space game name here" game it would have sold much less than a million boxes and the gameplay would have been all that mattered.

But here you not only have a bad game, but it's a bad game that doesn't really capture the essence of the franchise it is supposed to represent.

What  they need to do is change the skins and music in the game and call it: GENERIC Warhammer 40K. the mission system and game play in general is more reminiscent of that franchise...

Change Star Fleet to Imperium of Man, and kill all that aint of the empire.

Feel free to post the link where it says WoW had 400+ hours of gameplay at launch, rofl.

Also, 80 hours to endgame isn't "80 hours max of content". It's nice that you want to try to twist the developers words but perhaps you'd have a better time with the next game whose nda you want to violate. Personally i couldn't take a word of yours seriously after you knowingly violated a legally binding contract you freely agreed to, but that's just me.

Actually the game only has about 1/2 hour of content as the entire game is kill 10 rats in SpAaAAAaaAAaacCCccEE!! and a couple of click on this item 5 times over and over again. well theres pvp too so Ill give ya 1 hour. 1 hour of content.

I wouldn't want to piss that community off.

LOL.. that community was fun to piss off in high school though..

Post another review in an hour...

I would really like to see a movie adaptation of the Horus Heresy.. that would be sweet. From what I understand, this will never see the big screen, its direct to DVD, but a series on the Horus Heresy would be amazing.. good story there.

Sure, you can be well informed about a game. You could have taken part in the beta, if you have the time to trawl obsessively over forums that advertised it.

Or you could be an average person, who bought the game in a store where they saw it. Just like people who buy music, or film do.

Or you could find that everyone says how great something is, and find that it still feels like a dud to you.

It's amazing the number of "great" games I find unplayable, Fallout 3 and the Elder Scrolls series for example. The frame rate and motion makes me sick to my stomach, I don't care about the story arcs because after 15 minutes I need to puke. It doesn't make them bad games, it makes them bad for me though.

It also means that I lose a shed load of money when I buy a game like this. But at least I'm not paying to re-use them for months after the fact either.

Yes, the beta was available (and it was so bad that anyone who bought the game following the beta deserved everything they got) but not everyone knew about the beta or could take part in it. I don't believe for a second that there were in excess of 1 million people in the beta. And they should be able to get their money back if they feel it was mis-sold.

I agree with you man. Im not talking about the Star Trek fan walking through Best buy and seeing it  and saying "Oh wow a Star Trek MMO!" buying it and then tragicly found having hanged himself by his family the next morning...

I'm talking about the people who knew about this this game for the whole 8 hours it was in production for.  Those guys. STO = WoW killer. OMG they completed their first line of code, and have opened per ordering!! Im there!!! Those are the guys Im talking about.

Im talking about the guys in this video. Just change "Britney" to Cryptic and STO.

There was this game that:

  • Allowed me to be born on the planet Vulcan, Earth Kronos or Romulus.. On these planets was a vast land mass that would be similar in size to those found in games like SWG.. Where one can explore the planet and visit many of the known cities via shuttles or other forms of transportation, like the cycle Kirk rode in the recent movie :)
  • In each city, on each planet would have quest lines that would encompass everything from rescue missions, exploration missions, defense missions, diplomatic missions and even assault missions :)  Each planet would have it's own separate flavor and culture to absorb.
  • On Earth would be the HQ to Star Fleet, which would home the academy in which all star fleet officers would have to start eventually, after they completed the quest lines of their home planet that would lead them here.. or to Kronos if you chose to be on the Klingon side..
  • Along with the major 4 starting planets would be smaller size planets that would home colonies or smaller civilizations to contact and explore.. Approx 20 to start :) or more..  While many of these planets would be within the sector of space patrolled by either the Star Fleet or Klingons , some would be in neutral areas that would be in an ongoing contested struggle of control..
  • The contested planets would be guarded by orbiting defense satellites.. These satellites would have to be disabled by attacking starships before anyone could beam down to the surface.. Watch out for opposing starships that might want to protect their defense satellites :)  If you are successful in the assault and beam down, It is here you must disable the communication dish before a distress signal is sent ..  Watch out for hostiles (player or npc) that might be guarding it.. You have 20 minutes or fail.. :)  This type of encounter will reset every so often.. Maybe ever two hours? Since there would be 3 other planets as well to fight over, giving you 4 in all, every half hour.. Welcome to PvP
  • Each contested planet would home a series of quest and resources only available to the controlling faction (Star Fleet or Klingon empire) Now we have a reason to keep control of what is ours :)
  • The other remaining 16 uncontested planets (8 on each side) would home thousands of quest and quest lines that take you into land encounters or space..
  • Space would be seamless, this means NO INSTANCING..  You have the ability to fly to any of the 20 starting planets without ever waiting for a "Loading, please wait"..  Watch out  tho if you cross the neutral zone, if you do, you'll be flagged PvP.. However if you stay within your own "safe" sector of space, PvP can only be consensual.. This means if a Klingon comes into Star Fleet territory, the Klingon can NOT initiate a fight with a star fleet ship unless the star fleet ship fires first.. Once that occurs both are flagged PvP..
  • There would be multiple Starbases on each side to offer more quest and vendors.. I would even suggest adding 1 or two contested Starbases as well..  Disable the defense system via star ship, then beam over to the starbase to shut down the communication system.. You have 20 minutes or fail.. Same as contested planets :)
  • Tradeskills would be abundant..  Craft stat food and drink.. "Anyone for some Romulan Ale?"..  Craft different levels and qualities of weaponry such as phasers..  Craft a wide variety of ship components.. Craft armor and clothing..  Have a true player economy.. The options would be endless :)
  • Allow Fleet housing.. This would be the home for private crafting terminals, banking and storage for Fleets (aka guilds)
  • Allow for personal apartments.. Everyone deserves a place to lay down and relax.. and store personal belongings..
  • The only time anyone "loads" is when transporting from space to land (or starbase)

It was a dream.. sorry

[Mod Edit]

This is not too far off from a post I put up on the STO forums a long time agao. Very nicely written. Now..how is this guy not a creative director for a MMO company..What kind of a degree would this guy need to prove he can think creativley?

None of the guys out there at mythic Cryptic, whatever can come up with an original creative thought in their heads. Unbeliveable that this guy isn't making the bucks working for an MMO company.

Its all about the ....HIYAH!!!

In response to some of this...

I used to work in a music store, if you didn't like a CD we'd happily swap it for you. If you brought that one back too... maybe, maybe not.

So we'd change it if you didn't like it, just not forever.

The trouble with new games is that they cost a shed load more than a CD and there's often no way to get your money back or change if they're not up to scratch.

I think the general (non-fanboi) consensus is that STO is a bit of a dud, too easy to level, too repetitive and no real depth or longevity to the content. Which is fine if you want to play a one-off "out of the box" game, but is not fine for an MMORPG - which not only costs $50+ at the start but a monthly (or lifetime for the truly mad) fee on top.

Which taken together can mean an investment of approx. $200+ a year when you throw in expansions etc.

For those who paid lifetime subscriptions upfront for STO, based on current content that's an investment of $270 ish, or more than $5 an entertainment hour (based on the 50 hours of content admitted on the STO forum by thier dev team). Substantially more than your average game or entertainment event.

It's perfectly reasonable to feel cheated and want your money back on that basis.

If you can't get it from the publisher/retailer/dev team then it's perfectly reasonable to ask the credit card company to cough up the cash.

Or you could listen to informed, responsible people with common sense, who beta tested the game, or as this site like to lable these people: Trolls...and not waste your money in the 1st place. If you pre ordered and signed up for a lifetime sub sight unseen, well thats natural selection, you deserve to be burned.

Let's see how many noobs complain that "It's all about the Ultramarines! Waaaaaaah!" when games like Dawn of War actually focus on the Blood Ravens. I'd like to see a  Dark Angels movie myself, but I'm not crying because I like Ultramarines, too.

Fixed!

I agree with the OP.   When I eat lobster, I go slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww.  So I can enjoy every bite.   But then again, there are those that like to gobble there food down every time.  Sad.   Why the rush in MMO'S?    Take your time, enjoy it, have fun.   I spent an hour just talking to peeps about ideas and so on, all in-game.   I think people forget that it's not only about the game, but about making friends, being social, and mostly HAVING FUN!!!

This game aint lobster.. Its a box of mac and cheese.. and mac and cheese is vile.

This game has a lack of content.

most MMOs at launch have the ability to keep people interested in their game for more than 15 minutes. STO cannot compare to other MMOs in this regard.

This game has about as much content as WoW did when it launched. Oops we're supposed to pretend like STO is different than all other mmos.

Also, it's quite possible to reach the cap in WoW in a couple days /played time. Then you get to grind loot/badges.

this is simply not true.

OP is correct. Some people feel the need to piss and moan relentlessly when they do not like a game. Discussion is one thing but the constant flaming gets old. My guess is that people really wanted to like this game and when it didnt live up to their expectations feel the need to rant. Get over it, if you dont like STO find a different game. If you preordered and or purchased a lifetime sub then get over that too and think before spending.

OP is not correct..

So did you buy the lifetime sub or just preorder?

Neither.. I played the beta, and as a consumer made the wise decision that this game was not worth money, when I can play the same game in a number of different skins like Last Chaos, Rappels, Perfect World, Kung Fu Land (or what ever it is) for free. An asian grinder is an asian grinder... all of them are free why would I pay for this this one? This one has an instance every 2 seconds.

despite what you fanboys think not everyone has to like a game you are playing, they are allowed to say so and they don't need to write a 50 page essay  to do so

And on the flip side, not everyone has to hate the game because it doesn't meet the expectations of some.  Voicing an opinion about a game and moving on is normal and expected. Going on a crusade on a forum because a particular game is not right for you is just unhealthy.

You know what I find weird   The op was expressing his opinion and some people jump on him.  Posting about forums are about posting opinions. HMM hypocricy at its finest.  Maybe its late but I never read in his post where forums are about liking the subject.

Sure: "But quit being so self-centered and coming on these forums calling the game a "failure" because it's not exactly what YOU want" can look like hes saying you cant post but only on the surface and if you read way to much into it.  Sorta like if ones wife says "stop being an @55" sure I could take that as her trying to control me but only if I take everything way to personal.

Ur right op most of them dont actualy play an mmo or they play one called EvE which is the elitist Flavor of the month...more like flaver of the years. Has been for awhile seeing as the "deep and complex games" hold subs worse than "dumb downed casual games".  But thats the mmorpg forums for you, a sea of complaining and arm chairing.

And the the guy who compared makeing a game to a movie. That was silly.   The fact you compared a guy telling a grown man how to play pretend to writing code and designing software for a large project means youve never done it.   And to be perfectly honest is a rediculous comparison.  Plus critics are worthless all they like is indie films that only a few people like..... wait isnt that like.... nm i wont go there.

DragonShark: when did he ever say you cant post ur opinion. He was just posting his opinion on those who complain about the game over and over. You talk about intrest in other people opinions but you care little for his.  Reminds me of the saying about a plank and a eye.

Gamers have complained and trashed games since the prehistoric days of UO.  Some of you new comers to mmos might think thats impossible since you heard UO is the greatest MMO ever on these forums. But its true  even EQ and WoW who are known as huge commercial success also had scores of "this game sucks I coulda done beter".  ALL OF THEM EVERY SINGLE ONE.  Gamers who post on forums (yes thats right not all gamers post on forums)  Complain and say they can do better.  Its a union rule.

Did you read the OP's post? There have been threads saying basicly STO sucks, and heres why.. thats it. No one made a post saying to the effect of: People who like STO are morons. The OP is basicly saying People who dont like STO suck. He's putting his opinion about how he feels negativley about informed consumers with common sense, and trying to teach us how to act.

Absolutley not. Both of the people subscribed to the game now tell the industry its ok to put out crap, and thus we have games like Champions online and STO, MO ect. The quality will continue to go downhill as long as peple tell these companies that their awfull performance is acceptable.

Poor panda, just because you didn't like the MMO's doesn't mean they are bad games.

the numbers speak for themselves.
