I am going to disagree in principle, to something mentioned by the first two replies to the OP's thread. They are entitled to their opinion and that is fine, but I am wondering if they only really tried one leveling path. I say that  because WoW really does let you start a character in one of several places or swap to the play area of a different race whenever you want.

Anyway, what WoW did reminds me of a science show comparing the basketball player Michael Jordan and Cheetahs. They analyzed what makes them so dominant in their respective environments by breaking down every little strength each had. And each of the strengths were measured to be slightly above average, but it was the total combination of all the strengths in one package that allows them to have long-term success at their professions(playing basketball or chasing down a small kill.)

I bring this up because I think WoW did that in 2005 with all the seemingly little decisions they made. Everything from keeping the graphics low to (increases the size of their audience), to making it super friendly for non MMO gamers, to all the Easter eggs and cultural jokes they put in the game.  And I think it was also a little luck with the timing.

Now fast forward to present day and compare all the new MMOs to WoW.  A new MMO has to compete with 10 years of content, 4 continents, 2 additional classes (Monk and Death Knight) in a game that already had 6, thousands of quests, fluff systems like battle pets, casual raiding for people who like to solo or don't  have a guild (LFR gave me some of the worst experiences of  my life). PvP, Arenas, etc... You may not llike WoW which I think is fine but that is quite a competitor to take on for a new product right out of the starting gate.

I'll gladly come back to this game when I no longer have to pay money for all the skill bars. I am an enthusiast of nearly all MMOs, and as a developer, I cut game developers slack when no one else will because I know how hard these products are to create. But I think forcing people to pay for the UI crosses a line.

Ok, rant over, good luck guys!

As others have said, normal is super easy for all classes now. I started a new wiz to play with my daughter and he wasn't taking as much damage as my original wizard did at launch. And I was shredding everything without mana dropping too.
until they make it so any class can use any weapon i am not interested. In Diablo 2 i loved having a necromancer walking around with a giant unique scythe named "The Grim Reaper"
They are going to announce they are going "double secret free to play." Everyone will get a login screen for free and anything beyond that requires a  purchase from  the cash shop.

No, everyone is getting high off the possibilities their expecations are generating.  Come down is a bitch.

Tell me why is everyone getting excited about this?

Good question.

I think it would need to introduce some substantial changes to the game mechanics before I would, particularly since I couldn't even get to 80 in the original before hitting the wall.

Odd, I made it to 80 on my 1st toon b4 hitting even 20% world completion.

after that I went exploring to finish the remaining 80% of the world it was an amazing adventure.

That said, right now I'm finding it a bit hard to log in, legendary weapon chasing is not my idea of endgame, it's just an enormous grind fest, and while the whole game is suppose to be endgame, I'm feeling the lack of a proper endgame exclusive to max level characters only.

After you have a couple of max level toons and you have most of the exotic armors and weapons you need, unless you want legendary weapons there's little reason to login at all.

It's a shame really the game is awesome and gorgeous it only needs more incentives and proper rewards to keep people playing.

This coming from someone that loves the game and thought it would be awesome, you know the whole idea of no grind and the whole game is endgame.

in theory it sounds awesome and brilliant but in reality, hmm no grind yeah right, if you want anything that looks remotely awesome you better be prepared to endure some of the most horendous grindfest I've ever endured in any mmorpg ever !

To much RNG ruins the game completely !

And we need proper endgame exclusive to max level characters otherwise what's the point of a max level toon other than explore mode dungeons, either that or give us a harder version of dungeons with better rewards and by better I do NOT mean RNG crap or yellow rare items only once per 20x runs...!

I won't even bother to mention the ascended gear issue at all, good idea bad implementation !

Dispite all these annoying issues, I will most likely still buy the expansion, the love I have for the game is higher than the hate I have for the things I don't like about it and because I hope to see them turn things around.

also because A.net is one of the few developers that I currently trust, in contrast for example I like the premise of neverwinter but....I thoroughly do NOT trust perfect world to keep their word at all, all their games turn into a dissapointing p2w after several months of release.....they hook you in and than they start the milking once they know you're invested in their game !

This nails it.

does anyone have another link for the zip download? I click on it and i get a page that says they are undergoing maintenance. I think they didn't plan for this response :)

The biggest effect we have on games is after they are developed. Our opinions are considered "white noise" by game developers who have already decided for us, what we like. When we respond with our gripes, the number of complaints gets attention, instead of the content:

"500,000 people are complaining on forums about [insert game mechanic]. It's time to go free to play."

I don't understand the sense of entitlement.  You bought the game knowing that you could play the game as is for $15/month.  You still can.  Your original terms haven't changed, you have just been offered a limited alternative for free.  Why is that a bad thing?  You get prefered status for your previous investment(as does anyone else who spends money/subs in the future so they are not taking that away from you).

My questions is this: If you ignore the FTP option that wasnt available a week ago, what has changed from the day you decided this game was worth buying?

If the only thing that changed is that the game isn't worth a sub fee to you anymore, then think of this: I have a collection of about 25 MMO's that I have bought and don't play anymore.  Also add to that the hundreds of other games that I have bought at full price over the past 20 years and don't play anymore and I think we can say that games aren't meant to play forever (I currently play about 5 games).  I feel that out of all those games that I may have made a bad purchase on maybe 20-40 (roughly 15% I'd say) and you couldn't pay me to play those games now, let alone get me to play for free.

I haven't played SWTOR, but may give it a shot at some point now that it is FTP.  Just curious as to whether or not I am missing something when I see recent forum posts are always littered with posts about how "done wrong" people who purchased this game are with the FTP transition.

To answer the question in your title:

Most of them are not upset about the F2p part. They are pissed that the game was poorly developed at release, and, instead of spending their resources to polish/finish the game, they removed even more of the existing game and now charge money to get it back.

Since you have not played the game yet, I will offer my opinion on the state of the game ( I bought it at release). The game did a decent job with the personal story quests, which was the majority of what they showcased before launch. However, there were a significant amount of other problems that caused the mass exodus out the door. I will list the problems I had with it below but since it is my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

1. Environment is lifeless and restricted. If you decide to go exploring, there isn't many places you can go that is not the road to the next levelling area. Not a lot of ceatures, and the NPCs usually just stand still and wait for you to attack them. There aren't many extra sounds either. If you are an explorer typem stay away from this  game because there is only just enough content surrounding your feet to get you to the next zone.

3. Questing is very linear, and there isn't much reason to return to most zones on a particular toon, once you levelled up. Basically, you consume content in the usual ways in an area and then you are sent "down the road" to the next zone. Rinse and repeat. You will sometimes be sent to another world for a particular level range but the pattern is still the same.

4. Graphics engine is poor by modern standards. I didn't mind the graphics too much, once I learned how to tweak the ini files to get better performance, but doing so really throttled my high-end machine. And the default settings were just too old for me.

5. Pvp was eSport that had its own grind. The classes were not balanced at launch (which is always a tough one to get right).

6. Too many bugs to mention here. I hate to be general but there were so many and in so many areas that the subject would need its own post.

7. No replayability with a toon once it reached max level. Unless you like random arenas for pvp gear grindign, or maybe hunting the datacrons, the only thing left to do is start over with a new toon. That got boring quick because even though you get a new story, it's still int he same zones.

I've only mentioned the negative here for you, and to be fair, there are some positives. But I wanted you to see what I call the "worse case" so you can understand why people are upset that BW decided on a restrictive p2p scheme instead of fixing the issues listed.

The problem with all of the "f2p" threads is that the subscription model they use doesn't matter. The game is bad, and the game needs to be fixed, not how people pay for it.

This is what happens when  you get non-gamers to manage your titles. Some of these people don't even know the names of the products they oversee, they simply hop from one high-level position to another, applying generic business logic in each case.

I am honestly surprised the guy even knows the name of the game. Show me proof he even played it and I'll subsrcibe for a year...

I have 2 80s now and in all honesty, I feel the same way you do. And not just about GW2.

I have always been a fanboi of all games. I revel in new games that come online because I love having choices. But even though GW2 has its problems, it ruined some of the other games for me and I can't go back to them (I tried). And at the same time, I am tired of GW2, so I am stuck wondering if the genre is dead.

At this point, my intuition tells me that anything "themepark" is not going to cut it long-term.

How much money would it cost to create a fully-polished sandbox game a la UO? I think that is about the only thing that will generate long-term buzz any more.

Well whatever it is, we better start our ramen diets now so we can save enough money to buy gems so we can then turn around and buy keys.

My favorite is shrimp, whats yours?

It is just skins you know, and you can actually farm keys, you have 2 months. I have gotten 30 keys in 2 months without bothering to farm them, and it seems I been a bit unlucky even.

Or farm gold instead and buy the keys, each key will cost you about 75 silver so you can easily get 2 keys a day without any specific farming tricks not including drops. Then you get a key in every second chest or so as well.

Besides, this is useless crap. Skins matter little or not at all (my HoM sword skin give my swords fire damage which matters a little, it is the only skin I have with some use).

But sure, if you must have them, enjoy your ramen. :)

Where are you farming keys? I have played since opening day and I have 2 level 80 characters. I have a total of 11 keys and nearly 60 chests.

There is no realiable location to farm them. They drop at the rate of epic world drops in WoW (hardly ever). Beyond that zone completion will sometimes net you one.

That's what I thought. Ironically, I haven't had anything decent come out of one yet. Not anything I wanted anyway.

Interesting, yeah i knew this was happening because my roomie is waiting for the servers to come back up.

Funny, been talked to a thousand times about the game I'm playing now, three guesses which one, and how they don't have authenticators so my characters aren't safe, but this ....this is just astonishing.

Then again, it's not really because you see, my account was hacked twice by gold farmers even with an authenticator and the second time they had help from the inside. GM's who were getting kickbacks from the gold farmers to remove security long enough to hack the accounts. It was in the news, just not mainstream news so it wasn't noticed.

Please tell me you are joking. Do you have a link to the story or video?

Dungeons are not messed up, the players are. They are used to showing up, standing in one spot, doing DPS and getting a reward.

These dungeons were deliberately designed to be challenging and require thought and real teamwork.  They use new mechanics, and once learned, will spawn a new set of complainers on the forums about dungeons being too easy.

You can't stand still, you can't fight several mini-fights at the same time and you must read what the boss' mechanics are. I remember in SE, we struggled with the fire golem minion of one of the bosses; we struggled for at least 20 minutes; Then we noticed his description that revealed he turns damn near invincible if you use conditions on him. So we changed our tactics and he turned out to be a simple, slow, dps burn. No surprises this time.

Also, I am a bit surprised at all of the threads that decry the removal of the trinity; because it wasn't removed at all. Anet didn't remove these roles, they simply gave all classes the tools to pick which of these roles to play. As a Necromance, a squishy, I routinely tank in dungeons. In WvWvW, I choose to heal. These changes require a respec of traits, but that is inconsequential to me. The point is, I have a choice as to the role I want to play. People still tank, heal and DPS, but now that distinction is left up to the platyers instead of being pre-assigned by the choice of your class.

TL;DR: This isn't WoW, stop trying to play the game like it is.

I'm starting to slow down myself. For me the biggest draw of the game is the open, explorable world. And now that the novelty is wearing off, I would like something else to use that explorable land for.

It might be fun if we could place housing that isn't instanced. I know that isn't possible and I remember the funny problems it caused in UO, but we need something to make us feel like we are vested in the world we walk around in, and housing would be one way to help.

I am starting to feel like an outsider to everybody else's conflicts; the centaurs, the orr, etc...Like it's their world and I am some visitor breaking up fights, and helping people sell their wine so they can live happily on their plot of Tyria.

I had a post disappear 2 days ago and there wasn't anything derogatory or mean directed at anyone in it. Are you guys having db issues?
