This right here.  From what I have read, all pretense at choice is being thrown out of the window.  Although what I have read broke it down a little differently, but then, I could be behind the times. 

 

The intel I got was from an October 21st interview, which basically stated that in 90 levels, you get to make 6 talent choices.  As well, at level 10, you get to choose 1 specialization, which then grants you preselected abilities.  So, in total, it looks to be 7 true choices to make in 90 levels.  Some people may love it, but it is a little too much hand holding for my tastes, and will definitely not draw me back to WoW.

 

Does this expansion spell the end of WoW and a mass exodus to TOR? I don't really think it will.  I think TOR will most definitely be a success, but I think the WoW machine will continue on.

Yeah, this. I can't even count how many posts I've started and deleted over the past few months  to try and explain this game to people.

But you see, you responded to my post that bunion left a message about, where I was responding to someone talking about the number of hits over a year ago, so I'm not misunderstanding the discussion I was in.  I even explained to one responder that I was talking the incident over a year ago.  Now, the poster I was originally talking to may or may not have been referencing what you were talking about, but I wasn't referencing that discussion.  I was talking directly about the large number of hits that happened roughly a year ago.  

 

After that, I made a mention about current hits in the post to bunion, and that wasn't the post you responded to.  And again, I would be hard pressed to believe that the number of hits on this site reflect anything happening in game, especially when I still see plenty of back and forth arguments, complaints, and defenders to the game.  The DF forums have had a kind of ebb and flow, sometimes being busy, sometimes not, and right now, I would be hard pressed to say that it is on a permanent upward trend.  A lot of the traffic tends to hit around when a new story is posted (a Tasos story was posted not too long ago), as you have many defenders and critics alike checking it out and commenting.  Drama attracts a crowd.

 

But if it is on an upward trend, then fine, great, don't misunderstand me, I have no problem with that.  I just believe it's a little early to breaking out the champagne.

 We just recently had an increase of 11 new recruits. Things are looking up...and the update hasn't even been released yet.  

That's cool, and I am happy for your guild, but it doesn't have much to do with an increase of hits on these boards over a year ago...which is consequently what I was discussing.   Seriously though, kudos to your guild.  Glad to see they are seeing a slight increase.

No, the increase we are talking about happened awhile back when DFO on this site began to show an incredibly large number of hits, which put it in the number one spot for everything on this site hit wise.  It still holds the number 5 spot for the year from that, and the only list it is on otherwise at the time of this posting is number 10 for the month, but there have been a few DFO articles the past month from what I remember, and plenty of people revisiting old dramas and board wars.

 

It really isn't getting more traffic and climbing the boards at the moment from what I can see, and I would be hard pressed to tie any activity from this site to any increase in players in game.  Which is by no means a commentary on the numbers in game, so don't read too much into my words.

These types of debates always happen here and its usually take a great deal of effort to pull the name of ANY game out of people who make these points as you have other than 'well any game' or all other such predictably cute comments such as that.

Alright, well, if you have scanned the text of what I wrote, then you would in fact see the name of two games, but that is neither here nor there, and neither were MMOs.  BUT, the post you just responded to was the first post I have made in this thread.  I am not the original person you were responding to in the post I quoted, and I am not debating the merits of DF versus other games.

 

I am simply talking about facts versus opinions.  Hence the need to pull the name of a game out of me is pointless in this case.  I don't truly care if you like DF, or if you think it is the best game out there.  I find the statement that DF blows other games away in game versus game debates to be a bold statement, since it is truly a matter of opinion.  

 

I mean seriously, I never made statements even close to "well any game", and I am not trying to put other games out there as being better than DF.  My point was quite simply, there is truly no game better than another, because it is all opinion.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Reading my statement applies equally to anyone that states another game is truly better than DF and blows it out of the water.  Your statement just got picked for my little soap box tirade because it caught my eye.

 

How is that for predictably cute? I mean, it seems you didn't even bother to read what I wrote, and clumped me in with other posters, because if you had read what I wrote, then I would truly have expected a different response than what was given.

 

But hey, since we are here, I'll give you my opinion.  I finally played DF.  I found it boring and I found it lacking.  It didn't appeal to me at all.  But hey, that is just an opinion, just my opinion, and I am not throwing it out there and saying "DF sux" or some such comments.  If DF is your cup of tea, fine, rock on with it and play it.  It doesn't affect me or my life.

 

What MMO does have my attention right now? None of them.  There is not a single MMO on the market that has caught me and taken me for that magic ride since old school UO, old school EQ, and probably SB.  I'll keep trying, testing, and playing until I find one worth my dollar, hence me still visiting this site, and sites like it to see what is out there.

I am going to have to respond to this, because this is just false.  It is impossible for any game to blow another game out of the water in debates.  The problem here being is that it is all based on opinion.  

 

Some people may feel a game of Monopoly or chess on their PC blows DF out of the water.  Are they wrong? No, they aren't, just as someone who prefers chocolate over vanilla ice cream isn't wrong, or someone who prefers rap over rock isn't wrong, vice versa, etc, etc.  It's all a matter of opinion, and choices, and in debates of game versus game, where a matter of personal taste and opinion plays into it, there is no right or wrong.  Just what you prefer over what you don't.

 

A debate over opinion is just silly, but a debate over facts is another thing altogether.  But to say one game blows another out of the water is just silly and a matter of opinion.  It may blow the others out of the water in your mind, and the minds of others who play it, but it doesn't make it a fact because you or anyone else says so.

 

If you like the game, then hey, game on and have at it.  But just because you think the game is the "bees knees", doesn't make it a universal truth.  Flame on.

Its normal since the 1st mmorpg of all players nowdays is wow. Even myself, wow was my 1st mmorpg. When i started playing DF, i knew that i had to get the mindset of those who played hardcore mmorp's that we had before like Ultima online. Thats what i did so i quite succeded. The only part i didnt succeed was in the stats progression, listed in problems that will soon get fixed with the upcoming patch.

In respond of you last paragraph, just know that please. Darkfall is not for everyone. How much time did you read that? Wow is considered to cather to any type of players. DF had never been made to cather to all type of players. Thats why it will always be a niche game. If you cannot understand that, there is no point to argue further on since we simply dont want your kind to change our niche game into a mainstream with full of safe zone and other stuff that theme park mmorpg's have.

I did see your post, and I am not arguing those points.  And again, what he did or did not do is beside the point, because the discussion is newb ganking, it is not him complaining about the consequences of his actions.  The idea he was proposing was about guilds and players practicing newb ganking/griefing and changing player attitudes to help the player base grow by not driving of newbs.

 

As for MMOs bub, I started with UO and EQs FFA PVP servers, and MUDS before that.  I've run the gamut of the MMO landscape for a long while now.  DF isn't for everyone, you aren't telling me anything I don't already know.  But if the game is to survive, you need new blood, and IF newb ganking is an issue, then it won't help with the new blood.  And I say "IF", because all I have to go off of are accounts from players on forums like this.  So, if it truly isn't an issue, then this is all a moot point.

 

As for my kind, don't presume to know what I am and what I play.  I never argued any points for changing anything to be like a more mainstream game, so where your last paragraph came from, I really have no clue.  The idea is to change player attitudes, and to stop or curb the practice of newb griefing.  Much like the hunting analogy, once you hit your 1-2 deer limit, maybe you should think about moving on and hunting elsewhere.

 

So, to clarify one final time:  I am not talking about changing the rulesets to make the game more mainstream.  My points were about player attitudes.  That is it.  Plain and simple.

 

As for your whole first paragraph, I've got two things to say:  1) 24 hours, regardless of the changes being made, still hardly makes anyone truly competent or competitive (IE - they are still newbs), and 2) You talk about not wanting people to make your game more mainstream...well a lot of these changes you have discussed and many of the changes already implemented since the games inception, well they sure make it sound like DF is already on that path...just some food for thought.

Alright, I am going to go one last round here.   24 hours may be enough time to learn the ropes, but 24 hours hardly makes anyone fully competent or competitive.  So you can run around the world, harvest, and click your attacks? Does that make you PVP ready, or put you in the right mindset? For most, the answer would be no.  Regardless, 24 hours doesn't take you out of the newb phase of the game.  The point still stands.  You hunt your prey into extinction, then you have no prey to hunt.  It is that simple.

 

As well, the discussion of him running back to get his gear, that's really not the point.  It was just part of his story to get the ball rolling on the topic of discussion.  What he should have done, or did or did not do, it's all beside the point.  The point is newb ganking and it's effect on the population of the game.

 

Again, I am not going to fully speculate, because I have read accounts saying it is that bad, and accounts saying that no, it really isn't that bad.  But if it truly is a problem, then it is just another issue that could drive potential players away, and if people truly like the game they play, then you would think they would show some restraint to help the population grow.  But hey, what I do I know...

When does a player become killable? Not an answer I really have.  I wold hope that anyone that has an interest in the game is aware of what lay in store for them, and I would hope they would expect pvp at some point in time.  I think it is really more of a matter of not ganking newbs to the point of excess.  If you are going to participate in such activities, you have to be smart enough to not hunt your prey into extinction, IE - Not ganking that same newb until they log out in frustration.  That activity will drive players away...and for a PVP game to thrive, you need players.

 

Personally, when playing a game for PVP, I don't get enjoyment out of newb ganking, never understood the fascination with it.  I prefer my fights to be more on equal grounds or slightly more challenging.  Newb hunting = Not really a challenge.

 

But I digress.  I don't know how big of a problem it truly is, because I have read things saying it happens a lot, and things saying it really isn't that bad.  I think the truth lay somewhere in between.

Well, those are the popular complaint and your complaint dont fit in. For the newb's, they had the 24 hours protection. After 24 hours, you are suppose to know enough basic to know what to do. After all, after the 1st time you get kill, you already lost your gears. So getting grief dont add further problems at all. Learn to survive, get use on losing gears. Join a clan if you think you cannot solo in a sandbox game with free for all pvp.

Mate you are missing the point of the post which other some readers have understood. I dont care about dying in Darkfall in happens, this post was supposed to raise a bit of awareness about the players mentality of a few and how they can potentially ruin the game for others and themselves. It has nothing to do with losing gear or getting greifed that was just the catalyst that let me see how some players are behaving and how they are affecting the game for themselves.

Dude, you talk about 3 players killing you. You say you constantly try to return to your grave and you get kill again. Who is at fault? You. Go check an other near by mobs spawn to raise your stats and skills and leave your stuff alone. You say you dont care about dying, but you seem to care about your loots. Stop contradicting your self and assume that you care about dying for your loots. You lost your stuff, go find an other spawn point. Simple as that. I assume what you want is an insurrance system since you constantly find a way to loot what you lost after the 1st time you die.

Players are not making the game look bad by killing newb's and all that. Its better to reject players who are not mentally ready for darkfall rather then turining it into a trammel. 24 hours protection is enough for newb's. MAybe you should reset your character only to gain that 24 hours protection in order to get use to the game again.

And again, the only problems about darkfall is in the stuff i listed in my latest post. By raising stats rate and HP that they are planning anyway, you will finally go from newb to average player quickly. Then, from average to pvp ready to compete. With prestige class, no need to try mastering everything anymore.

Haven't posted here in awhile, but I'll bite.  The OP is not posting a complaint of his getting ganked.  I am quite sure he is well aware of what the consequences of his actions were, due to him/her being a former player.  They were quite simply trying to initiate a discussion, which most people in this thread seemed to have taken it as.  I think you are taking this thread for something that it is not.

 

For a PVP game to survive, you need players.  That is a plain and simple truth.  Some players are wolves, some players are sheep, and some a little bit of everything in between.  Now, if you have packs of wolves that roam newb areas for sheep, and constantly harass the sheep and drive them off, then you lower the population of the game.  Lowering the population is bad, especially when you drive off players before they have a chance to learn the game, and maybe develop a mindset for it (mindsets like tastes can be developed, IE - if that newb can learn the game, and get comfortable with it, they may begin to like it, pvp with the best of them, and stick around).

 

Regardless of the games other problems, driving off new players by constant ganking of newb areas will not be good for the population.  Sure, kill that newb if you feel the need, but then leave them be.  That's one thing SB did right, you had a newb island, and players had a chance to learn the game before being thrust into the melee.  Now, I'm not saying a newb island needs to be added, or additional rulesets put into play, but maybe the player base itself needs to start policing itself and taking these things into consideration if they want the game to gain players, giving you more people to fight and pvp.  

 

You shouldn't think of it as, "Well, if they leave, they weren't mentally ready for DF."  You should be thinking about how your actions might affect the population.  The more that play and stay in the game, the more people you have to fight in the future.  But, I digress, game on.

It's actually pretty common knowledge that gold selling takes place, there just isn't any spam.

As for it seeming risky because of the environment, it most certainly is. Which turns out to be quite a benefit for those of us willing to capitalize on that opportunity, assuming you are aware of the spots where farmers tend to flock to.

Many a night I've made a sturdy profit from a pack of wealthy farmers. Farming the farmers, we call it.


 

It really just doesn't seem like a winning prospect for the gold selling sites.  Back in my old SB days, we used to make profit off of gold farmers, much like you talk about.  But I guess where there is a will (or cash to be made), there is a way.

May not see gold spammers (which is good), but DF gold is still being sold for cold hard cash (google it).  Seems risky to do in full loot pvp environment, but it's there.

Just to note that battles with 700 are fairly frequent in EvE, and the record is something like 1400.


 

Not that it ever got to 700 (to be honest, not sure how many numbers we used to have in our massive battles, too many little dots to keep track of on the minimap), but Shadowbane used to have some large scale combat in the well over 200 people range. 

@Justin - Other games have seen the massive combat thing, so DFO isn't unique in that aspect, but glad to hear you are having fun regardless.

I for one don't think it's AV, but someone is definitely doing something.  A mod even came on a post within the past couple of weeks commenting on it.

As we sit, 24934 unique hits for a niche game, versus the 7316 of a "mainstream" game.  Now come on, someone is manipulating something.  This topic is running through another thread, and the big jumps in numbers were noted, and times and such, and it does not add up.

Is it AV? Doubt it.  Are these true to life, down to earth unique hits? They are about as true to life and down to earth as MTV's "the Hills", and that is to say, no way in hell.

I'm not saying DFO can't get some hits, plenty of drama around these boards, and people are drawn to drama, but 24K is a bit out of the realm of feasibility, especially since we see the same 5 people (okay, give or take a few, but you get my drift) posting here day in and day out.  24K unique hits, and we would probably be seeing quite a bit more faces posting on these boards.

Darkfall has ALWAYS been a hot topic here, for the past 4 years. The only thing that knocked it off the top of the list was the new Star Wars MMO when it was announced. 


 

Hot topic, sure.  24K worth of hot topic, especially after release? Not so much.
