Open world PvP without ganking. Is it possible?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/29/12 5:48:57 AM
its possible, but not from the game mechanics perspective. i mean its up to the player to choose the safest routers from one place to another. do you really want to go to this fabulous place.... which is infested by gankers? you dont. you avoid that place and make it impossible for yourself to get ganked. genius isnt it? thats the price you have to pay for playing an open pvp game.
another way is obviously the point of mmorpgs - grouping with players. |

out of all comments 90% are idiotic whining. 1. same thing over and over again? just like every game in this genre. you knew what you were buying, they didnt promise anything more in that regard. its like buying multiplayer only first person shooter and expecting story for no reason at all. 2. easier blacksmithing: lets say you spend 50k upgrading and 50k to get a RANDOM item. or... you can go to auction house and pay 10k for a specific item. blacksmithing was pointless, period. anyone with a little bit of sense knows that, which means in this case - everyone here are speaking bullshit. 3. oh easier game! if you actually played the game you would understand that patch log actually is more confusing than you think. melee classes suffer from survival issues a lot, attack speed makes them even harder (due to most of their survival coming from life on hit items). so some things got harder, some - easier. you dont have to be genius to get that. 4. 20 comments and no one commented the actual retarded change - magic find not working on environmental items like chests, bodies etc. so since you didnt notice this change in a game that revolves around finding items... well.... ;) 5. dumbing down difficulty vs omfg blizzard greedy bastards: on one hand people are whining that you have to have insane ammounts of gold to get proper gear for act 2, and items proper for that act only drop in act 3-4, which means youll have to use the auction house, filling blizzards pockets... on other hand blizz now kinda removes (or atleast lessens) this issue.... and people are still whining. 6. gold, ah, repair costs: so since you can now finally find items that you can wear... youll have to spend less gold on AH. so that gold still retains some value its now gonna be a repair cost sink. how is this whole thing COMBINED a bad thing? 7. 'no ammount of skill is gonna beat enrage timer without gear'. as much as it hurts me, diablo series and actually most hack and slash games were never about actual skill. you would only be challenged in pvp. is that a bad thing? not exactly, without putting artifical difficulty stuff most games are easy unless you have to play against real players.
conclusion: im not saying diablo 3 is perfect, but some people fail to see the real issues. blaming diablo for things that are either genre specific or exists in countless other games. unfinished auction interface (since you have to consider more than 3 attributes later in the game, 3 attribute limit is insanely ret#arded etc), insanely cliche storyline (pretty sure anyone could figure out the story from the first lore announcement), no build variety (too many must have skills resulting in 1-2 builds for late game at best), class imbalance, outdated graphics here and there (still rather pretty, but some things like cutscenes that use in game engine... bleh) etc |

League of Legends: RTSGuru.com | Why You Don't Ban Kassadin
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/24/12 9:44:15 PM
have you even watched any tournaments? seriously go see some statistics from lets say IEM world championship. kassadin is never banned. there are many counters to him and many more versatile champions out there. the reason why people rage is that they arent even playing ranked in the first place = blind pick. even if they are playing ranked, they are clueless about such thing as counterpicking and why banning exists in the first place. the only reason to ban kassadin or any other pub stompy champ like lets say tryndamere is to calm your team down. |

EVE Online: CCP Planning Overhaul of Ship Training
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 3/07/12 3:04:38 AM
most of times people forget that they dont actually need the big ships. the 'oh my god look at my huge ship yo' attitude is really disturbing. this isnt typical fantasy mmo where people brag about their penis *cough* i mean armor and mount size or whatever. no, the biggest ship wont autowin you all pvp battles. no, there are no best ships. you have to be able to afford losing the ship in the first place. by the time those people realise what those big ships are all about... i guess they will play long time enough to actually fly them. hah |

Heroes Of Newerth: 100th Hero Celebration Kicks Off
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/28/12 8:25:20 PM
so you are saying that dota2 should have a really bad camera angle, sped up gameplay and some questionably balanced heroes. i guess not everyone can agree on that, im sure you can atleast understand that. the only thing that Hon has over most competitive nature games is customizable UI. thats it. |
|
|
individual and/or team skill and reputation is where it belongs - gvg, arenas and so on. WvW however... there isnt much point in seeing enemy names actually. some people are forgetting that one of the 'worlds' will probably be asian one. does it help to see one guy with SAKLDJQWLDKJWQ nickname and another with MVDNLVDLSFDSF ? it certainly doesnt. as long as you can distinguish class its all good. customized visual appearance is ok as well. it would really break immersion to see 10 identical rangers running at you. seeing personalized capes is fair enough as well. |

The best pricing model for the consumer: B2P with content cash-shop
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/09/12 10:17:27 PM
b2p with content cash shop is bad. why? lets see... remember the times when we would get game patches for free? with more than a few maps and some new features? well those times are pretty much over. now if you want a new piece of content you have to buy it. those short DLCs cost as much as expansions some time ago yet they dont offer even nearly as much content. hopefully things like battlefield 3 karkand dlc right at goddamn launch wont be inspiration for developers, because its definitely a rip off. 'oh look we sell a full price game with half assed maps so if you want better ones go and buy them trololo'.
some say that content cash shop is great, because you can skip the stuff that you dont want to buy. whats the solution here exactly? to go and make such shop? or... simply make quality content that people would like to play instead of putting a lot of fillers. look at DDO - you can buy pretty much every dungeon separately. is that good? ofcourse it would be if most of them were good quality content. but they are not. lets not for get the good old buy 100 coins, get piece of content for 51 coin and youll have 49 useless coins left untill you buy another coin pack. freakin ridiculous and most companies are actually doing this retarded trick.
personally i like guild wars model the best.

UO's housing system, it's history, problems, and solutions
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/08/12 1:53:15 PM
interesting. some of the solutions are a little too hard on the sandbox concept however. the item lockdown for example is unneeded if you can detect the thieves with 'search hidden'. this would still allow infiltration through social means which should always be a feature in those mmos that are more social. all kinds of 'permission' concepts that some new games have would work pretty well. |

Originally posted by kishe i think what you mean is that when you go to town you have to consider what quests others have, since they are the main source of experience... the problem with that is that there are so many variables in this. people are sort of discouraged to grind mobs even if that means just partying along with your friends that didnt do 10 quests that you did even tho they are like only 1 level lower. early level quests? not many people are doing them in groups as far as ive seen. in world of warcraft for example people would rush to whatever level solo, because simply - there was no benefit to group other than the social aspect. in fact you could level faster solo. so basically: older mmos: more grindy gameplay which is actually less boring, because your mind process is different : 'i have to find a group'. thus the task becomes the secondary thing (the grind itself), and there is more focus on the primary thing (grouping and socialising). you had to make the 'mmo' part happen., one way or another pretty much. new mmos: the task is more important. the reward, the exp. everyone want epic loot, fame and glory. you are not required to play mmo part, so if you dont care you can just ignore it. people are looking forward to epic loot that late game gives them, not the actual new possibilities of multiplayer. even if they want to experience those, by the time they are end game, they will be brainwashed to just want epic loot instead.
so new mmos basically get those very nice grouping tools and such which would have been insanely useful for the older ones. however there is this taint called CASUAL SOLO GAMER that makes those great grouping possibilities quite useless. the mmo which allows to solo everything, most likely kill a lot of their community building potential. |

'It is impossible for this game to live up to the hype it has generated.'
quite often i do indeed agree with this statement... but not always. with skyrim i realised that it depends on what kind of hype do you build up. if devs are promising features that might not be in the final product... then people can get disappointed. however if they deliver everything they promised... how can that game not live up to the hype? thats why i mentioned skyrim - it wasnt a perfect game, but everything devs said on videos was seen in the game, no lies at all. there wasnt a reason to expect more and thats why it was great. |

Everyone is raving about Guild Wars 2, yet I just don't see it...
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 12/29/11 5:37:05 PM
gw 1 was beautiful. it didnt have the extremely memorable character design or whatever... i mean its not nearly simillar as warcraft orcs for example. the style was functional, not annoying etc. gw 2 seems like its going to be following the same thing... tho id say some of the races look retarded and not fitting.
hmm lets take swtor as a comparison... im huge star wars fan, but swtor style just looks awful. the game has dated graphics also.... and yet people still go for it... come to think of it - there arent many mmos that have that distinctive 'holy crap' thing going. |

(Design) how to make gamers want to play Dungeons and Raids over and over without "Carrot of a Stick" syndrome?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 12/26/11 10:27:59 PM
in WoW i felt that a lot of early content was going to waste thanks to insanely increased exp etc. so much time was spent creating those and people would just go for 'the best route to level char to max lvl as fast as possible'. not sure how much the game changed since i played (stopped at woltk expansion release date). still.. i guess 'interesting content' is not enough for majority to go and simply experience it. imo every developer should aim to make every bit of content worth it - if there are too many dungeons for some particular level... atleast make it a good worthwhile choice to choose one of them on one playthrough and other one with another char. etc... |

EVE Online: Blood on the Snow
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/14/11 4:34:59 AM
this is MMO. massive multiplayer online. to succeed youd have to get MULTIple PLAYERS. to get to even higher proportions you need to cooperate with MASSIVE ammount of players. i think it makes sense completely. what do you want? some random 5man corporation controlling the galaxy? or even worse - solo everything? this is mmo in every sense. basically you hate a mmo for being a mmo. also the tactics question. you played the game for a short time. since this is more social mmo than 99% others tactics come in many ways. infiltration is a good tactic for roleplayers. and if you say that doesnt work... well im out of ideas really - no idea how a 'legal maphack' could not be an obvious advantage. |

General: The No Elves Manifesto
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/08/11 6:45:45 PM
hmmm dragons... they are good when they are done sparsely... but ya know... we got such a huge dose of them in skyrim that... ;D i think we got enough of them for a few years.
wizards - with this one ill disagree. most games that had 'wizard' character actually had spontanous casting sorcerer of some kind. going back to the dnd version of wizard we would have the inteligent versatile trickster. i thought diablo 3 will have it, but the return of chainlightning, blizzard and meteor trio i guess im a little bit disappointed. what im saying is that wizard can be done in many ways, but devs choose the most straightfoward three element path which is simply boring.
elves... hmm... yea.. i guess i wasnt much of a fan of elves. in dnd video games, lotr movies and games, countless fantasy games... i didnt quite like elves. the trio of tree lovers, dark skinned evil ones and arrogant mages... it got a little boring. in all my gaming career the only elves that i liked were dunmer in morrowind - they simply didnt look fake, eldar from wh40k could be considered as space elves.. they were pretty cool.
orcs... i loved orcs in warcraft 3, not as much in world of warcraft. the asian versions from lets say lineage 2... well they looked, sounded and felt simply awful. from lotr side... i guess i liked them more when i only knew about them from the books lol. wh40k orc design was awful (liked pretty much every other race in that universe). hmmm... i like beast races in most games (khajiits ftw), but orcs are simply boring to me. |

mostly xenophobic not racist. just because someone doesnt like some particular nation or whatever you shouldnt bash him. its just that persons preference, which is nothing wrong - many have national preferences - they just dont talk or make fuss about it... not to mention your comment is pointless - it wont change that persons opinion at all. just sayin. |
