I've never seen such a needlessly convoluted account recovery system. You'd think Square Enix would WANT people to come back.

You'd think so, but you'd be wrong. I used to have an account 4 years ago or so that I lost. To play again, they made me buy a new copy of the game, as they made it very clear they had no intentions of restoring my account/characters.

Back before the Return Home to Vana'diel thing existed, that's what they used to tell players, as well. "Go buy another copy of the game. Fuck you."

All you need to do in walk into your Mog House and talk to your Moogle for the first time and he will explain everything to you. Also there is a quest that they have added for n00bs that you can do by zoning out of one of the main cities:
Sandy: South San d'oria >> West Rounfue
Windy: Windurst Woods >> East Sarutabutara
Bastok: Bastok... Market >> South Gustaberg
This quest will teach you about checking mobs and using WSs and such. Also has some nice rewards such as a free exp ring and reraise earring (save this for when you need it for CoP quests ... trust me)
Actually ... here is a Link.

What the hell? I want my damn free reraise earring and XP ring.

Every time you log on it says "Welcome to <xxx>!" <xxx> is the name of your server.

It sounds like there was a problem with installation or updating, and the file became corrupt. A hash check of the files(like ic0n said) will let you know if any files were corrupt and fix them for you. It doesn't sound to me like it's any problem with NVidia drivers. My friends and I all played with relatively new(8800 Ultra SLI for me, 9800 for my friends) and never had any compatibility issues. I run a 64-bit operating system, and that's also never caused any compatibility issues with FFXI, which impressed me.

The last thing you want to try, if you want to go that route, is to obtain an up-to-date version of the .DLL from a friend of yours that may currently play. If you don't know anyone you trust that plays FFXI and can send you the .DLL, then you may not want to bother. If an update was corrupt, it's probably more than just the one file, anyway.

You can go to your Mog House to switch jobs whenever you want. You do not lose any of your XP when switching jobs but you do lose all your buffs(with a few exceptions such as: signet[or similar effects], anniversary ring, empress/emperor ring).

Your mog house is in the residential area in every main town. If you look at your map, you shouldn't have trouble finding it.

It could be any number of things. SE support opens in about a half hour, if you want to try asking them whether or not you'll be able to connect to the game from China. Hopefully they can at least answer that simple question.

If you contact support via webchat, make sure you have plenty of supplies in your house. Normally, it takes support anywhere between 30-60 years to answer your ticket.

Once they confirm that you can play from China(hopefully), your next step would probably be to contact your ISP to see if they have any restrictions in place for ports 50000-65535(or connecting to the game in general).

You could be the next Minidragon. Just don't get banned like an idiot.

Couldn't tell you. You could contact support just to ask them if you'll be able to play from China. I played from the Dominican Republic without any issues on and off for a year and a half.

I'm afraid unless someone else lives in China here, they won't be able to help you. We have very few people that visit these forums as it is.

In the meantime, to try to eliminate user-error as a possibility: can you tell us what error you're getting that prevents you from updating POL/FFXI?

ofcause this slows up the latency because the router has to assign port numbers and "unpack" the bitstream up to the 4th layer of the OSImodel (transport layer) to look up the port number, when a package takes a trip, but as long as it isent to many ips, it is not THAT really notaceble..

Of cause it does.

In FFXI you can pretty much forget about doing anything on your own past a certain level. You'll need help for quests(like to get your subjob), you'll need a group to level(for most classes), and you'll need a group to do some end-game content.

The good news is that a lot of things you can do in FFXI don't require an insane amount of people to get accomplished. For some of the starter quests, one higher level character will be enough to get the job done. For instanced fights(BCNMs, etc), you'd normally take 3-6 people depending on how many people are allowed in.

Full alliances go as high as 18 people.

I've been trying to get my hands on Darkfall, myself, but they only sell copies once every now and then. When their shop is open the demand on the site is so high it always times out for me, and sometimes the shop goes down altogether.

If you want to wait until Aventurine's situation gets stable, you might like Darkfall better than XI as it's a more here-and-now MMO than FFXI is. It will take you several hours of gameplay to build up to the point where you'll start doing things other than grinding monsters for hours.

POL does make use of both HTTP/HTTPS(when you activate content IDs/enter billing info) and SMTP/POP3 for POL mail.

The game itself uses a rather strange and broad range of ports: 50000-65535. There could be a problem there. You sound pretty sure that the ports aren't blocked, and you said you have no firewall running, so there's no use in wasting any more time on that point(especially since you tried bypassing the router).

I'm not going to lie, if you contact the game's customer support, they'll tell you to contact your ISP. If you contact your ISP, they'll tell you to talk to support for the game, etc. etc.

Problems like this are particularly tough to troubleshoot for that reason. The servers are up and running, and people are connecting without any problems. As far as the game's tech support is concerned, it's a problem on your end(or your ISP's).

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to offer much more help here. It's frustrating when things like this happen to me, because I'm also always sure that my networking configuration/router set-up is flawless. In the end it's always a little thing I've overlooked, or my ISP's fault. Unfortunately where I live I have no other choice of ISP, so sometimes my only solution to a problem is to cry quietly in the corner.

Sorry I can't offer more help than that.

Check your firewall settings. Also, games don't run on HTTP ports. Applications require you to forward TCP/UDP ports(sometimes both, but TCP is usually enough). If any of the following ports are blocked on your router or by your ISP, you will have connectivity issues.

Ports to open:
TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
UDP 50000 - 65535

Also, if you're on Vista, I assume you've already downloaded the Vista version of POL. I don't have Vista, so I don't know what effects running the non-Vista version will have on your game.

Remember that there are two applications that need firewall permissions. POL and FFXI.

You forgot to mention that RMT is not against the rules and encouraged in many EQ2 servers. I forgive you, but it does make your victory slightly less so.

Actually you're wrong, RMTs get banned and players get rewarded! I actually got 1 plat for reporting one that they managed to prove guilty and banned him.  As for the guy you quoted, you've proven nothing by listing those games.  My statement was based on POL's behaviour regarding how one would create an account with them, not how lousy they can create a game.  Yeah, I agree, The Matrix sucked, Pirates of the Burning Sea is a cheap cop out of Pirates of the Caribean, Star Gate Online TCG? well yeah, seems SOE are getting despirate for ideas, I mean they turned SWG and Everquest into card games! >_>  Either way this has nothing to do with account creating so you don't win, you fail.

Do you actually play EQ2 or did you randomly pick it out of any game you could think of to avoid saying WoW?

Never seen the official Exchange servers in the game?

Anyway, since it seems you know nothing about the game, here's something from their official site to help you next time you try.

http://soe-ing.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/soe_ing.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=19603

You can pay real money to SOE to fund a virtual wallet, which lets you buy in-game items for EQ and EQ2. That's real money trade as far as any reasonable eye can see.

They may be rewarding players for reporting third-party RMT, alright, but only because it costs them business.

LOL you sure ic0n, "he" said "me and my b/f".....

Oopsie!

Yes.

It's not about development price, it's about the PS2's limited technology. If it wasn't for that, this game would probably have DX10, water rippling effects, support resolutions of 20,000,000x20,000,000, and you'd be able to move your character by attaching movement sensors to your body.

So thanks, PS2.

So we're idiots because we can follow logical rules, and you're a genius because you can't read a tiny snip of the Terms of Service? You're the kind of person that makes a purchase online on some of those sites that now require you to receive a phone call from them. You read "your purchase will require a valid phone number" and say "Why do they want my phone number? I'm not giving it to them!" Then you bitch and moan when your order's canceled.

Brilliant.

Anyway, I can't really hold your anger against you. After some of your more recent posts, I figured out why you're as pissy as you are.

Thanks for the laughs, and enjoy EQ2. I liked that game.

I could make an argument about lighting. Some zones are meant to be dark by design. Someone with a lighting enhancement could see a mob where someone without it would not. I mean sometimes it is very hard to miss a mob with a big name over it head, but .. ya know flees. Someone with enhansed lighting might see them bouncing around when others can. I know someone could just adjust their monitor's brightness. It is not the strongest argument I have.

You know, I've never said this before on the internet, but I've never experienced anything where it would be appropriate. Until now.

Here goes:

/facepalm

It is an anti-RMT measure. Using Hotspot Shield, or webproxies and using fake e-mail addresses are the most common things for RMTs to do, so they can create a thousand accounts, log into a game and spam the hell out of people.

If there is a next time, use real e-mail addresses. Also, if there's two of you, I assume there's two computers(unless you devised some magnificent way to play split-screen FFXI). That means one key per computer. No need to even use Hotspot Shield, and I don't see why you did. Even on the same network, different computers have different external IP addresses.

Good decision. Out of curiosity, what server did you pick?

I have to echo what Satimasu said. If you're partying with pugs, I would recommend against DEF/VIT food, or even tanking at all. DEF/VIT will only really help you if you're taking hits, and I wouldn't recommend you take hits. You'd be better off letting someone else, ANYONE else tank. I tanked in the dunes as Elvaan BLU, I've had SAM tanks, etc.

The DEF/VIT boost you get from most food at your level will not create a large difference in damage intake.

You're much better off using eva/acc(jack-::o'):: if you're stuck tanking or you really, really want to tank. If you're DDing, use whatever the situation calls for. No situation at your level should require you to pop DEF food.
