The mentor system is clever because it encourages the hardcore players to become mentors of new players, rather than gankers of new players.

However, I believe the main problem with this game is that if forces you to do only team PvP and does not provide other roles, such as "lone adventurer" (not unless you want to be relentlessly ganked and harvested). The new changes do nothing to address this central problem.

I think DFUW could easily be fixed by re-introducing the 100 or so small islands on the edge of the map (and exclude them from the tithe / feudal system).

I don't find any of this a problem. Levelling areas were populated, yeh, people use flying mounts but you still see the people.. it's like cars and walking in real life. People use a car cos it's useful.. same as flying mounts. You see plenty of people driving cars, usually more than are walking except in city centres. Same thing.

Ignore the naysayers, they are probably hating. If you're on a populated server there's plenty of people everywhere and it's definitely like a world. If there isn't, try some other servers. Low population servers usually have a messed up economy anyway so you'd definitely want to change.

I'm not hating or trolling: writing what I believe is the truth brings me no pleasure at all.

I am genuinely sad at what has become of WoW. It used to be a very very addictive game (WarCrack some people used to call it - can you imagine that? Can you imagine people calling WoW that name now?).

If you loved playing Fire Mage pre-2008, as I did, you will be very disappointed if you return to WoW now.

The lovely old skill trees have completely gone. You no longer feel a sense of achievement while leveling because there are no new talent points to spend at each level.

Fire ball is a lame spell now, and kiting has been nerfed for Fire Mages, so Fire Mages are now pathetic (until max level with max gear, but by then what is the point?).

I want the old skill trees back. Oh God, how I miss my old pre-2008 Fire Mage.

Until then, I'm waiting for Elite: Dangerous, not WoD.

I think you're not understanding the type of game this is. It's more of a Diablo style game than MineCraft or WoW. Play any of the offline lego games and you'll get an idea.

So it's not actually Lego then. What a brilliant idea (sarcasm).

I totally agree with the OP. However, I think the OP is highlighting a symptom, but not the disease.

Pre-2008 in WoW, there were DPS classes, tanking classes, healing classes, and the game was more of a challenge. Therefore, it was perfered to have social contacts in order to do really well - so socialising was considered normal, but not compulsory by any means. These days, everyone can do similar things - especially DPS, and crowd control can be a substitute for tanking. The game is also easier, so nobody really feels a need to socialise at all.

Most other developers have followed Blizzard's new model, and the rest is history.

Somebody mentioned Darkfall Unholy Wars as being a social game. I don't like this game because you are bullied by gankers into socialising, rather than it being a pleasant option.

I really miss the pre-2008 skill trees.

I loved the way you had freedom to customise your character more every level.

I liked building up my Fire Mage's fireball spell level-by-level until it could take down the average monster in 2 hits! I even managed to partially spec in frost so I could kite masterfully.

Does anybody else miss them, and is there any sort of campaign to get them back?

i love my fire mage and i can still do all that right now. Although the skill and talent trees have changed drastically over time, they are still pretty good. I would agree that a little bit more talents would be nice but i do like that  right now every talent that i choose now is viable. Back when there was a bagillion talents everyone was limited to one cookie cutter build because the rest was useless and the elitists wouldnt accept your home made build.

I disagree with you, but correct me if I'm wrong...

These days, the Fire Mage build only works like it used to once you have reached level 90 AND you have attained all the best gear (that will elevate your critical damage percentage adequately).

Until these conditions are met, Fire Mage is the worst of the 3 specs: Leveling as a Fire Mage from level 1 to 90 and then doing all the activities in order to get the needed kit will make most people rage quit well beforehand.

If you can only get a Fire Mage to work right at the very very end-game, there's no point because there is nothing more to play for!

I hate to say this, but I think you are the worst kind of fan - you applaud a game / developer when they do the wrong thing.

Ruthless comparisons will be made to MineCraft.

With the sort of budget Lego has, we should expect all the features that MineCraft has (which was made by 1 person) and so much more.

The bar needs to be raised for MMOs. We need to move on from WoW.

I really miss the pre-2008 skill trees.

If the game is good enough, I'm more than prepared to pay for it - regardless of the payment system.

However, I'm not paying or playing any MMORPGs right now because they're not good enough.

Hopefully, Elite: Dangerous will be good enough.

Blizzard's Fireside Gatherings are a particularly good idea. It's a pity that there are no Fireside Gathering events in the UK - I would certainly go.

The Fireside Gathering events work because the focus is still on the gameplay.

In contrast, CCP with Eve Online has been making bad decisions since about 2008. For example, I have bought all of the Eve Online books. However, the content of these books is all about the Eve universe outside of your spaceship, e.g. - nothing to do with the gameplay whatsoever.

The difference is that I am paying lots of money to collect cards in Heathstone because I see an enjoyable future lifestyle with the game. In contrast, I have just cancelled my two Eve Online accounts that I have had for seven years because Eve Online hasn't really progressed since 2008, e.g. - players will never have a meaningful experience outside of their ships (despite the teasing marketing).

I'd rather have seen them spend the money and time on the game, which is needed given there's been no new content for ages (and won't be until the expansion).

Yes, I totally agree with you.

CCP started to do small amusing PR events a few years ago, and now they seem to be dominating Eve Fest. A few days ago, they had to sack their entire Atlanta branch, so it's not a strategy that gets results in the long-term.

The problem with it is simple, i for one don't mind that it takes a long time to go from vr1-vr10. The problem is the only way to do it really is to quest. In my mmo's i like to lvl through a variety of ways or atleast one other way such as dungeon runs. We should not have to quest our way to the top, its stupid and not fun for a great many players and will likely hurt the game in the long run. I love this game and will continue to play but for the love of god don't make  me do 2000 quests.

I dont see a problem here.  Everyone knows that ESO is a game based on story questing.

There are thousands of other games out there who offer a different gameplay style.

I have the feeling some people want to change ESO into a generic mmo, adjusting it to the gameplay style like most mmos on the market.

Name 1 major mmo in today's market that doesn't require you to run hundreds if not thousands of quests to progress. Please.

Point is in other mmo's you can get a acceptable amount of xp from dungeons at least, in teso u simply can not.

In WoW, I managed to level my mage from level 75 to 85 just training vanity pets and doing PvP pet battles !  I didn't even intend to level!

I'm just illustrating that other games offer more ways of leveling.

Some 'professional reviewers' are not paid directly by the games companies, but are biased by the prospect of getting professional rewards at industry events, sponsored by games companies, e.g. - "Best Reviewer 2014". This also applies social / peer group pressure.

In addition, a lot of games have their best content right at the very beginning because a lot of reviewers regard reviewing a a job, which they want to complete as soon as possible.

I think WoW 2004 - 2008 was remarkable because playing it felt like an addictive drug from start to finish. I don't quite understand how the whole genre has lost this feeling because in theory games should be getting better, not worse.

I've never played ESO, but I have had a lot of experience playing WoW.

I'm surprised that ESO is boring, because I remember WoW from 2004 - 2008 to be totally addictive.

I wonder what sort of mojo WoW had that ESO is missing?

It would make a great childish game if you base it on the surface of the game that is the art style etc. But agian, that is all based on graphics. The humor, which is also a part of the surface, that is presented in the game reminds mostly of TSW and that is not considered a childish game. Yet the humor is not based on the graphics. Again, it comes down to the graphics reminding us that it COULD be a great childish game. But it is not a great childish game. Children would only get to the easy-part of the end game and then quit.

Why does it bother me? Because people who have only tried WS for 10 minutes are accusing it for being childish in a negative manner even though it isnt. When I first tried WS I was impressed with everything (and as a tough MMORPG critic who have pratically tried every game, it was close to a first time), but when I looked at reviews on various websites, it was the ONLY reason that people didnt want to play it.

It was the only major reason I could find. Now when you look at other games, it is mostly something valid that is being the major flaud: TSW = Poor combat animations, Rift = Soulless combat and character, Guild Wars 2 = Poor PvE system, Vanguard = Poor game support and I could name many more with reasons that make sense. But a game being childish as its major flaud?

People accuse WoW of having cartoony graphics.

People accuse EvE of being a spreadsheet game.

such accusations seem to follow the strongest MMOs too. I wouldn't pay much attention to them, young one.

But Eve is a spreadsheet game.

The most profitable aspects of Eve involve spreadsheets. The reason why alliances go to war is to improve their profits when they use their spreadsheets.

Different strokes for different folks.

I like it.

I think you're a liar.

4 out of 5 of these items are PR and have nothing to do with gameplay.

When Elite: Dangerous comes out (the rumor is this September), I think this should really put a rocket up CCP's asses to respect their customers. So far, Eve Online customers have funded DUST, World of Darkness, and Valkyrie. These were ventures designed to nickle-and-dime Eve Online players as much as possible.

It's about time all these profit-losing distractions are amalgamated into Eve Online.

I apologize for this horrible case of thread necro, but there is an important issue to clarify on this thread because when one types in the words "best MMORPG for pvp", this thread comes top of the search list!

Eve Online is not the best MMORPG for casual PvP. This is because for every 1 minute you spend PvP'ing, you are likely to spend at least 60 minutes collecting resources to fund your PvP. In addition, it takes time to network in order to 'cultivate' a PvP 'team' and therefore be one of the more successful players in PvP.

In most other PvP games, there is no huge 'down time' like this.

Eve Online is an OK game for other reasons, such as community, but saying it's the best for PvP comes with quite a few caveats.

That is a brilliant comment - it just sums up the whole MMORPG genre right now!  :o)
