This discussion is interesting but it's a moot point, like most discussions about Eve - The central, insurmountable, problem with Eve is that it's becoming obsolete.

Why bother with 3 separate games (Eve Online, DUST, Valkyrie) when you will be able play a game that aims to do all 3 facets in the same game (such as Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen)?

Eve becoming obsolete isn't a question of 'if' - it's a question of whether it will happen in 2015 or 2016.

Warhammer 40k did have a version of X-Com game play. It was called Chaos Gate by SSI.

You're right and you're wrong! Chaos Gate is a 1998 game. If you try Chaos Gate now, you might find more fun trying to get it to work than you have fun actually playing it! Chaos Gate does not have the complexity that the X-COM (or more recent XCOM) games have.

In addition, some of the sound effects of Chaos Gate (which can be turned off) make the game crash.

So there is a void in the computer games market that Games Workshop have not filled.

That was an excellent review. Very well researched.

ESO sums up everything that is wrong with MMORPGs today.

The problem with this upcoming mobile game (Warhammer 40,000: Carnage) is that it hasn't got anything to do with the traditional gameplay.

This mobile game is a platform game. Games Workshop should have looked at XCOM: Enemy Unknown (iPad version) for their inspiration - using this format with the 40K universe would have been awesome.

Why can't the fans have nice things?

My perfect game is science fiction, rather than fantasy, and it's actually being made at the moment - Elite: Dangerous. The first version for release should be approximately September this year.

The idea is to make a living, breathing universe and you can do what you like (only limited by how far the game has been developed at that moment).

It's not a sandbox in the same way that MineCraft is, but Elite: Dangerous should allow for a lot of freedom, and it's the concept of liberty that really appeals to me.

I cancelled my 2 accounts because the cost of £80 per year was too much for the small amount of new content that was being introduced twice a year.

My money was being used to fund flops (DUST, WoD). Valkyrie should do OK, but I reckon it will be upstaged by Elite: Dangerous.

I think CCP is also spending too much time, money, and emotional energy on PR.

I don't think CCP will be able to maneuver in time in order to counter the threat posed to them by Elite: Dangerous, which is releasing in a few months.

Even if CCP maneuver quickly, they have the insurmountable problem that Eve Online, DUST, and Valkyrie will play as three separate games. In Elite: Dangerous, all these aspects will be in the same game - in about 2 years' time - so CCP will still get beaten eventually whatever they do.

You'll notice that in the article's illustration, Eve Online, Valkyrie, and DUST appear to be in the same game - but this is absolute nonsense.

I've been playing Eve since 2007 and I totally agree with you.

CCP have a history of failures since 2008 (DUST 514 and WoD).

I don't think Valkyrie will be as good as Elite: Dangerous, which will  be released first.

CCP are up against a legend - David Braben. I'm a realist - I don't think this is a war that CCP can win.

CCP should have just concentrated on Eve Online and made it the best game it can possibly be. That game is their strong point, and I think they have wasted their chance - that boat has already sailed in 2008.

That's a good, detailed review. Well done.

For your interest, the review that influenced me most was Angry Joe's review on YouTube. The advantage of YouTube is that you can see a demonstration of the gameplay.

If you want to make money out of doing reviews, you could do the same thing.

Personally, I am waiting to try ArcheAge (when it becomes free to play) and Elite: Dangerous when it comes out in a few months.

I'm enjoying Heathstone, Dungeon Keeper, and the X-COM games at the moment, and that's enough for me.   :o)

The people who are not having fun with ESO always say exactly why they don't find it fun.

The people who are having fun with ESO never say why they find it fun.

Therefore, I'm far more inclined to believe the opinions of people who don't like ESO.

Detail provides credibility.

I'm a critic of CCP, but I must admit it was awesome to read my name "Mors Magne" on that monument.

No thanks. A pseudo-sandbox which is in reality a gankfest with no woking justice system where the cyberbullies rule the world doesn't interest me.

I'll be playing Archeage instead. At least there are consequences for acting like a psycho in that game.

I don't usually agree with you, but I do agree with the broad thrust of what you are writing here. However, to the developers' credit they have just introduced a mentoring system that might encourage gankers to turn into mentors.

However, your point still holds because despite the mentoring system, there isn't anything else to do in this game except gank somebody. For example, if you want to be a lone explorer - forget it - the system and geography is loaded against you - you really are the 'fresh meat' to be ganked and harvested without mercy.

Yes, it's very difficult indeed to make any sort of ground-breaking game.

The creator of Elite (and upcoming Elite: Dangerous) is a high-flying Cambridge University graduate who has experienced his fair share of making games that were not quite so successful.

It's all about having a vision and expressing it using applied mathematics.

They were good times, I was actually an old guild leader of the deceased and her BF in #11 and was present at the funeral.  I must admit I was pretty pissed at the time, but to even have that moment listed, it is worth it being enshrined forever for her, even if we all died in the snow....

If it were my funeral, I'd rather be remembered for having the funeral that resulted in an epic fight where lots of people had fun!    :o)

ESO is probably the best mmorpg out there right now, but its not sandbox. Therefore i will not buy it, cus i played wow/gw2/allods etc. The last like 5yrs and im a bit sick of themeparks

"ESO is probably the best mmorpg out there right now..."

Really? REALLY???!

Sweet Jesus - the other MMORPGs I haven't played must be far worse than I thought!

The author has probably been paid to promote ESO.

He writes a lot about the faults of WoW - this serves to avoid all discussion of ESO. He doesn't mention any facts or evidence that support his unpopular opinion that ESO is "the future of MMORPGs".

Read the article, silly boy! ^^

You're right - there are a few minor tweaks with those few bug fixes.

I reckon BioWare have 1 programmer working on SWTOR + a large PR team hyping up every minor change.

This ratio of programmers to PR people has been similar right from the start of SWTOR - I reckon it's how they wasted the $100 million that was supposedly spent on the game.

I almost felt like they paid MMORPG.COM to hype people.. Why else would they write YAY.. smells like a hidden comercial

Pretty much what I think. Plus the lack of innovation generally makes the smallest tweak seem more significant than it really is.

The world is still seamless and if you like to quest and level not rush rush rush to 90 then yeah its fun, with the crossrealm opening up there are now people in the lower level zones hunting as groups, no more empty zone because you picked the lowest population server you could then complain there is no one playing on it.

Flying is not as big a problem as people say, you don't get to fly till 60 on the main lands, then later in northrend and same with Pandalands, so if you think that being able to fly all over at 90 is a problem, I'm sure you can pick at more.

Open world PvP is dead, good it was a gankfest anyway

The LFG/LFR tools help people learn to raid, it shows and can be frustrating, but if no one will explain the fights and just expects you to know them then it good that they get some face time with the boss before they get thrown into flex or Normal.

Apart from Pandalands being very cute and fluffy, wow is doing fine, lots to do if you want to do it, if not then you will hear the children crying out about "I've bored, I've got nothing to do" like anyone is going to entertain the self entitled little.....

End game raiding is still huge, but as the new expansion is coming people are doing other things as they are getting to that hang out till it comes phase (as all your epics will be replaced by greens first day)

Bullshit.   This 2007 YouTube song, WarCrack (Peein' in a bottle), captures how playing WoW used to feel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so-vj2yp5GA

If you Google the term "WarCrack" now, you will find that the last entry for this term in the news was 2009.

I think this is a good idea because after the trial, DFUW's developers should get plenty of honest feedback.
