In 2008, CCP made a massive mistake by dividing the Eve universe into 3 - Eve Online, DUST, and later this year Valkyrie. Between 2008 to 2013, it did not matter because CCP had literally no competition whatsoever.

 

Fast forward to 2014 - now we have Elite: Dangerous coming out roughly this September, which should eventually do the same job as each of these 3 games, but in a far more immersive way, and Star Citizen on the more distant horizon.

 

I am sure that CCP are absolutely shitting bricks. However, I can't see how they can do anything about it - they've been complacent and left things far too late.

Another irrelevant adjustment.

 

If they reintroduced the 100 small independent islands, I would re-sub because this change would make solo adventuring a realistic prospect again, rather than just being sport for team gankers.

 

CCP went down the road of making irrelevant adjustments to Eve Online since 2008. CCP have been successful up until now because so far they haven't had any serious competition at all. However, Adventurine have more serious competition, that's why their plans always fail.

On reflection, I now realise that Warhammer 40K Eternal Crusade is a 3rd person version of Planetside 2.

 

I still think the devs have approached this from the wrong angle - they should have created the universe first. 

 

There is no point in doing a Warhammer 40K game if you are not going to include Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Tyranids, Gene Stealers, Necrons, Orks, war barges, space hulks, Imperial Guards + Commisars, and include civilian populations.

 

You also NEED to have the Emperor. 

The developers have come at this at the wrong angle. What makes Warhammer 40K amazing is the feeling of a living, breathing universe where the unexpected happens.

 

Instead, they are making a huge FPS. However, this market has already been cornered by Call of Duty etc.

 

The developers should have started by making the universe itself, e.g. - solar systems and pockets of life. Proceedurally generated space hulks, hidden necron crypts, gene stealer colonies masquerading as human settlements etc.

 

Combat should have been an additional layer to make things interesting.

 

I suspect that this game won't be deep enough and will lack immersion. 

 

1000 player vs 1000 player combat sounds cool, but if you play Eve Online you reaslise that it's an impersonal, laggy experience. 

 

Warhammer 40K was an opportunity to do something really different - perhaps make a new genre of game. The opportunity has been lost, I fear.

 

This game is a paradox - they have this big open world, which implies freedom, but all activities converge on group PvP and nothing else. Severe punishments for solo exploration etc - which is highly unusual.

 

I reckon that most of the player numbers in the statistics come from a narrow time period 1 year ago when people were trying the game at launch. I imagine the fall off of players has been quite significant.

Content should never be nerfed or removed. Content should only be added to.

I reckon this game will be the surprise hit of the year - the money is being spent on developing gameplay, rather than PR.

 

I think E:D does the simple things well - it's a solid foundation on which further expansions will be built (walking on planets etc).

 

Eventually, it should offer a sense of freedom and immersion that the Eve games don't have.

 

I like the idea of customising my ship. I look forward to using Oculus Rift with a HOTAS.

The problem with Eve Fanfest is that 95% of the presentations are waffle. This is because, since 2008, the new content made each year is so small.

 

So they have to spin it out. If you don't believe me, watch the 2014 keynote presentation. It's waffle until about the 28th minute. Then you get 1 new small feature every 10 minutes or so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k07Uu7qUEa0

 

This year, Eve Online, Valkyrie, and DUST are in for direct competition from Elite: Dangerous, so I would keep hold of your money and watch this space until the end of this year, at least.

I think Elite: Dangerous could be the surprise MMORPG hit of this year. The budget is being spent on development, rather than marketing, which is why it's hardly discussed.

 

Marketing budgets play a big role in hyping games up.

There was a lot of tension in Vanilla WoW, but with this new WoW I'm bored because it is all too easy, I'm just tanking 3 mobs at once and not even breaking a sweat. 

What I hate the most is any time the game offers any challenge, it is always impossible challenge that they have to break the games mechanics so you easily win. For some reason they love to put you against massive bosses but then make you invincible by giving you some NPC to heal you or some buff or something.... IT IS BORING!

The quests are more linear than they were in the past, I mean they literally lock so many quests off so you have to do them all in order now before more open up and they guide you down this narrow path. I used to think it was bad before, but when I play Vanilla WoW, they're far more dotted around and they aren't all locked off until you complete earlier quests either. I often have times where I have one quest, that leads me to a cave where there are several quests, I complete them all and I get sent back to the town, then I only have one quest that sends me to the next cave....

I don't like the new talent system, it is just very restrictive, takes away the customization you used to have. I dunno if it changes, but I just feel locked down a set path, to the point where I'm the same as everyone else. 

 

There still seems to be a world but my problem is the quests are so linear now that if you ever find yourself on the quest quest line as someone else, you will be down on mobs to kill. I've only seen 3 or 4 people levelling so far and each time we've been standing around waiting for mobs to spawn. A way worse problem than it was in Vanilla WoW where there were way more people, just weird because I felt like I was following this other person and just trailing slightly behind in the quests, I just felt being pissed off as he had already killed all the mobs. 

 

I don't like any new stuff they've added like the pet battles, it just isn't fun and doesn't feel good at all. It is as if someone made a weird mod for Little Big Planet (PS3) and you can tell the game engien wasn't really made for it and no programming was involved, they just tried to change the camera view a bit. All the new stuff in the game feels very odd though, it really is like they're trying to do stuff with the engine that it just cannot do. They're finding some weird compromise and it doesn't work out at all.

 

I don't get why they always want to keep making you invincible as well, giving you mobs you have no chance with witht he conventional game mechanics. I tried Death Knight and they do it near the end of that starter area where you fight that big fat naked thing. The most unfun fight I've ever had, there is no point to it, I'd rather have challenge that constantly hitting him for 20 mins while I'm invincible and just waiting for him to die.

 

 

The game is a mess, it is a shame because the fantastic world is all there, sadly though it just feels like it has had bits edited so much that it is very inconsistent. I've had quests that point me somewhere, only they've changed the way you get there now and they've failed to update the quest text to tell you how you need to get there now. There are weird map inconsistencies too, I don't like the map when you're in Teldrassil, feels very broken and you cannot zoom in at all.

 

You only got to level 20...You were essentially doing all the quests that were back when you quit...So ya the exact quests you left to are going to be the exact quests of now. Only a few actually got changed. So whatever you quests you are talking about that are dotted around is wrong. The quests are still the same quests they were in Vanilla, with a few areas that were changed due to cata.

From what it sounds like you probably wont enjoy any game you play in the next 10 years probably. You have this thought of nostalgia that is still in the game but you dont remember it right so it will never live up to your expectation.

That just sounds worse, I like having a massive library of skills. What I loved about SWTOR, I feel engadget managing all my skills, why I think GW2 and TESO online combat is so boring, you get like 5 or so skills and that is it..

You only have about 6 abilities you use in SWTOR. Not sure what you are talking about. If you are using more than 6 abilities than you are not using your rotations correctly.

Also they are just toning down some of the skills you need to use. WoW you have to use about 10-15 during a fight. They are cutting it down for some classes that takes more skills.

 

 

Well I dunno what SWTOR is like now, but when I was playing I had a few hot bars full of skills that I used actively. 

 

 

I dunno what you're going on about with quests not changing, I went back to Vanilla servers and the structure of them all are totally different. They used to be mostly all open for you to do when you want, not they lock them all and make them so linear.

 

I disagree with you totally - Especially when you write that the level 1-20 quests today are the same as in Vanilla WoW. 

 

For example, the Goldshire starting area has been stripped of all the Defias quests. Instead, they have these horrible slay 10 orc quests.

 

All the good quest stories have gone.

 

Even the Worgen starting area gets boring and it has a nasty bug that can make the game crash.

 

You never see enemy players trying to attack or infiltrate cities. These things used to happen many times a day.

 

WoW is definitely not the game it once was.

I've suddenly realised what the problem could be. I reckon somebody could have hacked your account and used it to sell ISK.

 

Did you notice any ISK missing?

 

Otherwise, you could write a letter of apology to the CEO and say how much playing the game means to you. If I were you, I'd use a fountain pen, write it by hand, and send it recorded delivery air mail. It's got to have a good impact. Get someone to proofread it first before you send it.

I bought ISK once from a website 5 years ago. CCP quickly found out I'd done this and came down on me like a ton of bricks. They took all the ISK back - so I actually had negative ISK on my main character because I had bought stuff with it.

 

They said that if I got caught doing it again, I'd be banned!

 

If I were you, I'd wait until Elite: Dangerous comes out and get into that - I reckon it will end up being better than Eve anyway.

So it is not the Trees you miss but you miss Ghostcrawler making Mages the ultimate...sorry they got nerfed.

 

Classes haven't been "nerfed" they've been made equal, so they are all now mediocre and lack flavor. For example, all classes now have some degree of healing ability, which they didn't have before 2008.

 

These 'new abilities', such as healing, makes classes more 'versatile', but makes every class more boring and useless. I don't care for my mage's healing ability, but he's got it anyway, whether I want it or not.

 

Does anybody specifically need the services of a fire mage, a priest, or a warrior any more? I don't think they do.  

I agree that Eve Online's strong point is the social aspect. So far, it's unparalleled. 

 

The downside to this is that it requires A LOT of time.

 

However, gameplay-wise, I can imagine Eve being superceded by Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous.

 

It will be interesting to see what does better: social interaction vs gameplay?

I reckon the underlying problem is that Hearthstone is the massive success that MTGO should have been, and now Wizards is under pressure and fighting for survival - doing everything it can. 

 

The reason why I think that MTGO might be fighting for survival is that in order to continue as they are, the number of new players has to at least equal the number of people who no longer wish to play MTGO. Heathstone could totally mess that equation up for Wizards, which means they have to do something or lay people off etc.

Actually... its pretty possible to play as a solo player, I do it myself for the last year. Its a matter of politics, with the Territory control patch some regions are way more solo friendly now. And there still exist some nice, hidden/unpopulated places you can live where you will see only another solo players around.

 

If you look at the map as it is now, every single area is between 2 player cities / towns at the periphery and even more inland. This means that you can easily be attacked from at least 2 directions at any time - and nobody has eyes at the back of their head! In DFUW, creeping up or zerg rushing with loads of people is pretty standard, so if you are discovered, you know you are 95% likely to get killed and fully looted.

 

Every part of the map is a potential route for hostile players to travel from A to B.

 

What this means is that solo players are 'road kill' for team gankers or committed griefers. Your chances of 'getting the loot and surviving' are now only about 50-75% per expedition - which is rubbish if you are truly soloing because, as a solo player, every piece of kit is far more precious to you.

 

In contrast, you used to be able to plan what island you were going to travel to, and plan the safest journey to get there. If you did this, there was a 98% chance of success.

 

There is an enormous difference between 25-50% chance of getting ganked and looted per expedition, and a 2% chance of getting ganked and looted per expedition.

 

The map changes totally changed the nature of the game - the removal of the 100 isolated islands on the periphery limits your options as a player massively.

I agree. I like Hearthstone, but I think the WoW team started to lose their way around 2008. For example, the Chopper YouTube series is a waste of time - I don't bother with that.
