I disagree with the article. A working example of the author's beliefs is TSW - the gameplay is rubbish.

The gameplay should be the main focus. Stories should be considered additional - the icing on the cake.

I think Elite: Dangerous has the right approach.

That article is pure advertising rubbish - there isn't enough detail / facts in order to substantiate the claims.

It's the sort of vague rubbish that career politicians trot out.

Elite: Dangerous. The public alpha test went very well. It's currently started beta testing and should be released around September this year.

Darkfall Unholy Wars as reasonably good crafting. The 'mini game' aspect would be the collection of materials without getting killed and totally looted by another player.

However, this game comes with 2 big caveats:

1) You've got to like teaming up for PvP - everything in this game is ultimately directed towards this.

2) You have to pony up the money up front. Therefore, you could look at gameplay videos on YouTube to see if it's your thing. It isn't most peoples thing!

In my opinion, it is going to be an MMO, it's just that it's not going to be a very good one!

The creepiest aspect of WoW was the Legend of Stalvan quests in Duskwood. Unfortunately, they were removed via a Cataclysm patch.

I can understand why they might have been removed because the story-line hinted at pedophilia.

However, I think the quests should have remained because the story was done in the style of a horror mystery (e.g.- a mysterious event, an investigation, learning about the characters and how they changed by reading diaries and letters, dangerous encounters related to the plot along the way, discovering the horrific truth, the grand finale with a show down, closure, and the aftermath), and was all very well written and executed.

Here is a link that provides more detail:

This a good example of why I won't be re-subbing. Good things were not valued. I think Elite: Dangerous is the way forward for MMORPGs, but it never gets any coverage because the PR budget is nil - all the money seems to be going on development, which is absolutely how it should be.

I wish Blizzard would just focus on the gameplay.

I imagine some PR person has convinced Blizzard of how important they are. I think Blizzard needs to have more pride in the work that they do. Make good games and be proud of it - just concentrate on doing this.

This leaves the Eve universe vulnerable to future competition. This is a BIG problem because all 3 games require players to play for the long-haul (years, rather than months), and subscription to Eve Online is relatively very expensive.

I highly doubt CCP will charge seperately for the three games once they hit the same platform. Players = Content, so it really does not matter for which game they pay, as long as they pay for  one of them. They want people playing, and they know the likelyhood of people paying sub for more than one is much less, so would make sense to just give "all accesss" with one CCP sub. (They kinda teased the concept at fanfest.) You will probalbly only be able to play in one of them at a given time though, unless you multibox.

I disagree with you. The most important fact to consider is that the Eve universe is divided into 3 entirely separate games. This tightly restricts how these games can evolve.

How CCP bill players is a moot point when other games are highly likely to supersede Eve - beginning as soon as this September.

It's inevitable that the Eve universe will be superseded sooner or later because, for example, if you are playing Eve Online, you know that you will NEVER be able to get out of your ship in a meaningful way or pilot a fighter.

Eve is like a dodo on an island, waiting for the faster evolving humans to arrive.

Fact 1 - EVE is an old mmo that will not survive to Elite:Dangerous or StarCitizen.

You FACTS are not facts. They are wild guesses at best.

Statistics are not in favor of the new kids on the block in the MMO genre. Just saying. The number of times WoW have been declared dead due to some new MMO hitting is staggering. Black Prophecy and Perpetuum were also supposedly going to kill EVE. Yeah... I dont think CCP i shaking just yet.

No - the main thrust is that dividing the Eve universe into 3 gimps the evolution of all of them. It puts a tight straight-jacket on what developers can introduce.

In 2008, CCP made a massive mistake by dividing the Eve universe into 3 - Eve Online, DUST, and later this year Valkyrie. Between 2008 to 2013, it did not matter because CCP had literally no competition whatsoever.

Fast forward to 2014 - now we have Elite: Dangerous coming out roughly this September, which should eventually do the same job as each of these 3 games, but in a far more immersive way, and Star Citizen on the more distant horizon.

I am sure that CCP are absolutely shitting bricks. However, I can't see how they can do anything about it - they've been complacent and left things far too late.

You cant kill EVE with twitch-based/direct-flight game mechanics. End of story. Way too many old farts like me playing that LIKE the way you interface with you ship in EVE.

You're right up to a point - Eve Online will still fill a niche for a while.

However, it's only a matter of time before the 3 Eve games are totally replaced because dividing the Eve world gimps the evolution of all 3 games.

You obviously don't have a clue how the game works out play the game at all. Getting people out into the world to farm mobs and super nodes at spawns is irrelevant? Changing the best way to get crafting mats from afk harvesting in safe zones to farming mobs is irrelevant?

Please step away from the Darkfall forums.

You admitted it yourself - "...Getting people out..."

This is not a game for solo play at any stage - even the mere act of "farming nodes" requires a team.

Another irrelevant adjustment.

If they reintroduced the 100 small independent islands, I would re-sub because this change would make solo adventuring a realistic prospect again, rather than just being sport for team gankers.

CCP went down the road of making irrelevant adjustments to Eve Online since 2008. CCP have been successful up until now because so far they haven't had any serious competition at all. However, Adventurine have more serious competition, that's why their plans always fail.

I like the large scale battles in Planetside 2 and when you are running with a good squad it can be very person as your squad can be donig very important things in the battle.. sure its harder to be part of a big battle as an individual because its hard to influance things by yourself but then again a mmo game is all about playing with other people.

Its good to see the devs actually coming on here and posting in the forums... infact that has got me a lot more interested in the game ashe has outlined a few things I did not realise.

I will not be going over to the game site and registering on the forums to check it out more.

On reflection, I now realise that Warhammer 40K Eternal Crusade is a 3rd person version of Planetside 2.

I still think the devs have approached this from the wrong angle - they should have created the universe first.

There is no point in doing a Warhammer 40K game if you are not going to include Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Tyranids, Gene Stealers, Necrons, Orks, war barges, space hulks, Imperial Guards + Commisars, and include civilian populations.

You also NEED to have the Emperor.

The developers have come at this at the wrong angle. What makes Warhammer 40K amazing is the feeling of a living, breathing universe where the unexpected happens.

Instead, they are making a huge FPS. However, this market has already been cornered by Call of Duty etc.

The developers should have started by making the universe itself, e.g. - solar systems and pockets of life. Proceedurally generated space hulks, hidden necron crypts, gene stealer colonies masquerading as human settlements etc.

Combat should have been an additional layer to make things interesting.

I suspect that this game won't be deep enough and will lack immersion.

1000 player vs 1000 player combat sounds cool, but if you play Eve Online you reaslise that it's an impersonal, laggy experience.

Warhammer 40K was an opportunity to do something really different - perhaps make a new genre of game. The opportunity has been lost, I fear.

This game is a paradox - they have this big open world, which implies freedom, but all activities converge on group PvP and nothing else. Severe punishments for solo exploration etc - which is highly unusual.

I reckon that most of the player numbers in the statistics come from a narrow time period 1 year ago when people were trying the game at launch. I imagine the fall off of players has been quite significant.

Content should never be nerfed or removed. Content should only be added to.

I reckon this game will be the surprise hit of the year - the money is being spent on developing gameplay, rather than PR.

I think E:D does the simple things well - it's a solid foundation on which further expansions will be built (walking on planets etc).

Eventually, it should offer a sense of freedom and immersion that the Eve games don't have.

I like the idea of customising my ship. I look forward to using Oculus Rift with a HOTAS.

The problem with Eve Fanfest is that 95% of the presentations are waffle. This is because, since 2008, the new content made each year is so small.

So they have to spin it out. If you don't believe me, watch the 2014 keynote presentation. It's waffle until about the 28th minute. Then you get 1 new small feature every 10 minutes or so:

This year, Eve Online, Valkyrie, and DUST are in for direct competition from Elite: Dangerous, so I would keep hold of your money and watch this space until the end of this year, at least.

(Elite: Dangerous docking tutorial: )

I think Elite: Dangerous could be the surprise MMORPG hit of this year. The budget is being spent on development, rather than marketing, which is why it's hardly discussed.

Marketing budgets play a big role in hyping games up.
