I'll be 40 in May.

First of all, is there anything that you would really like to experience in your life? I think other people have touched on this by suggesting things like outdoor activities. At your age, I really wanted to visit a deserted desert island in the ocean and do some scuba diving. I managed to get that experience.

If I were the OP, I would try to get a job that you enjoy so much it doesn't seem like work.

This could be a very big challenge though!

In your spare time, you could try internet dating sites. Finding the right person and settling down feels more important later on - particularly if you haven't by the time you are 39 years old, like me!

I agree with the person who suggests that when you hit 40, you feel really old and aware of your mortality. For one thing, your parents become more frail. It's not a great experience, so if I were you I would make the most of things.

Start thinking about your financial future when you retire - but I know it seems a long way off.

Don't worry about games too much because you can take them or leave them at any time at a moment's notice.

I've only ever had 1 character and I can't find the motivation to level beyond level 86.

So I'm now doing pet battles - that rewards with XP, so I could hit level 90.

The same person (you) will want different things depending on their mood and situation.

If a game can satisfy a significant number of people at any one time, that's probably good enough.

I think you've only listed the US servers.

My EU server, Defias Brotherhood, isn't listed.

This error means your survey can only collect information from US residents.

If this was the intention though, fair enough.

I used to play Darkfall, and I invested an awful lot of time into the game.

However, I don't have any inclination to grind from the beginning again.

Money is not the most precious resource - it's time. So I'm not going to let this company waste my time again.

Economically, the Greek economy is not doing well and so playing this game is a risk - it could be a further waste of time if the company gets taxed to death and folds.

I'm sticking with WoW and Eve Online because they are reliable. My in-game efforts are likely to build upon themselves and progress. That's satisfying.

I first played WoW 10 years ago, and now I've returned using my old character.

I think the OP has started to play WoW at the right time. In my opinion, the best feature is now the 'bet battle' system. This is only months old, and growing.

True - a big fault of the modern WoW is the absence of world PvP (even on a RP PvP server). However, in my opinion, this is actually an advantage for pet battles because you can concentrate on having fun with this without hassle.

WoW was not released 10 years ago? :D

I'm rounding up to the nearest 10 years!

Blizzard is now a very established and well-resourced company. I'm sure they have well thought-out protocols for just about any customer-related issue.

Hang in there - I'm sure everything will be ok, but it might take a bit of time because your case might have to be referred to a senior person.

If I were you, I would remind them about the issue every couple of days or so, in a polite well-written way.

I've just discovered 'pet battles' and I'm hooked. It's all I do, but there is so much to do it's amazing.

It's a bit scary though how addictive WoW can get. However, this is more of a critisism of myself, and enourmous praise to the devs.

I work in the PR / advertising industry and I'll let you into a little secret:

The best way of advertising a product is to have a good product in the first place. Otherwise, you've got nothing to sell.

Adversiting agencies never say this to clients because it makes us appear unimportant.

In my opinion, WoW is better than SWTOR because it has more variety. For example, the time and effort that must have gone into pet battles is absolutely enourmous.

EA did a full court press for SWTOR when it released.  The marketing and IP generated 2.4mil box sales.  The quality of the game will keep them playing, and it did not live up to the billing.

I don't disagree with you.

No - I think Blizzard should make new expansions in the style of Vanillia - i.e. have the choice of 3 lands to quest in at any one time, rather than just 1.

The pet battles in WoW seem fun so far.

Here are the actual reasons for the death of gaming/MMOs:

1) Solo leveling being as fast or even faster than group leveling (so many players nowadays who don't even chat, you can't tell them apart from bots)

2) No challenge / easy mode questing / pve. "Everybody is a winner, there are no losers"

3) P2W cash shops

4) minimaps and interactive maps ("exploration" = no need to learn the landscape, we will tell you where everything is, you just have to play connect the dots. You will never get lost ever...)

5) AHs and RMAHs (AHs are worse though)

6) cross-server 1-button dungeon queueing

7) Instances (arenas/bgs/dungeons/raids)

8) daily quests

9) flying mounts

10) culling

11) Devs and fanboys hyping their games with lies

12) "F2P" that are endless trials in disguise (paying players having an advantage in PvP)

Is what you're suggesting is that MMO's need a new model that addresses the points you've mentioned because what you've said is a very big statement considering many mmo's impliment a number of these points. Can you provide alternatives to your 12 point summation?

Sure.

1) Make leveling in groups about 2x as fast as soloing. Force people to become social. Communities will be much better if you teach players to be nice to eachother from the start (and if they aren't they will have to resort to soloing which is slower)

2) Make games challenging. Let players fail / die / wipe / lose if they are playing poorly. Don't design the whole game around bad players with no patience. Make the world feel dangerous and scary, not a kids playground.

3) Cash shops are cool as long as they aren't P2W.

4) No interactive minimaps/maps. Static maps that have to be explored fully are fine. No "you stepped into that zone = we will show you every single point of interest / town / dungeon etc". The more information is on the minimap/map the more time I am watching them and not my surroundings (Immersion breaking). GW2 the worst culprit in this. I remember playing GW1 back in the day and being amazed at how beautiful the graphics are. GW2's are better but I could not appreciate them because all I was looking at was my minimap/map.

5) AH = Auction House = no interaction between players = shit community. Give me a trade channel that can be turned on or off (PoE does this well)

6) Give me a /lfg channel. No 1-button cross-server automatic group + porting to the dungeon. It is immersion breaking and community destroying.

7) I just hate instances. They break immersion and are horribly boring since they are predictable. Give me non-instanced dungeons, where you encounter other groups of players, sometimes team up with them, and on PvP servers fight with them for a good spot / boss kill (and sometimes even strike a deal with them "give us 20 gold and we will let you live")

8) daily quests feel like a job, not a game.

9) flying mounts will die with WoW so I don't even have to defend my opinion

11) This is the main reason F2Ps are the future of gaming. We have been lied to too many times to believe your shit devs/fanboys! From now on we will try your game for free and IF it is as good as you say we will pay subscription or buy stuff from your cash shop.

12) Proper F2P or GTFO. You can still get money from F2P players if you have a good  game and a good cash shop.

Brilliant! I agree with everything you've said!   :)

This is a very interesting post. I'm reminded of WoW for some reason!

I think "9) flying mounts" is the most interesting suggestion - on reflection, having a flying mount turns a quest list from an adventure into a shopping list.

In my opinion, WoW is the classic subsription-based game and the problem I find with this model is that I waste a bit of my subsription when I stop playing it.

I see this argument all the time and never understand it.

Do you have a cell phone? How much of your monthly fee is wasted because you're not talking on it 24/7?

Do you have cable? How do you justify such an expense when every time you look away from the television you are wasting your sub fee?

It just blows my mind that people have no problem paying $50+ a month on a cell phone and $100+ a month for cable, yet they'll bitch about $15 a  month for interactive entertainment.

I do have an iPhone and I use pay-as-you go.  However, having a phone is essential these days (like heating and electricity) - it's a 'need' not a 'want', so you shouldn't be comparing it to a game.

I use 'cable' every day for work. PCs are also used for business, you know!

$15 doesn't seem like very much, but if you add together tiny expenses it can come to an awful lot - so you have to be careful - this is just good housekeeping. Particularly in this economic environment, and today the EU predicted a further period of economic downturn.

I believe the old saying is true, that you get what you pay for. A decent portion of the MMO community would expect regular updates, patches, hotfixes, expansions etc as a part of the service of a quality game.

To be able to continue to provide these quality services costs $.

I believe that there's room for all but the ones that want the shiney new toys will happily pay for them and the ones that don't want to pay may not get them.

Rhino.

I agree with you - you do get what you pay for.

However, I think you're assuming that people who buy in-game items for F2P games don't want to purchase that much. If they are keen they might pump in more money than you think.

For example, quite a few players in DUST are horrifyingly hardcore - I imagine they pay quite a bit, one way or the other.

The problem is that this sort of information is likely to be a closely guarded secret by companies that make games.

My favourite games review website of all time was Games Domain: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_Domain

It was active from March 1994.

All the games reviews were beautifully written by keen gamers. It was a pleasure to read.

Since then, it's shut down and nothing has come close.

Those were the days.

I voted 'No' because my experience of DUST 514 has been positive. However, I realise that this might not be a typical F2P game.

In addition, I played DUST from the beginning with the intention of paying for in-game items - so I never treated it as F2P as such.

In my opinion, WoW is the classic subsription-based game and the problem I find with this model is that I waste a bit of my subsription when I stop playing it.

For me, this subscription problem is magnified much more with Eve Online. I literally haven't played this game for a year, but I contine to waste/pay my subsription to 'keep my hand in' and keep leveling my characters up (I'm playing this game for the long-haul once I get a bit more free time).

If Eve was F2P I would be far more enthusiastic about that game.

So to summarise, F2P games are probably more suited to how we play these days - i.e. we don't really know what we'll be doing in a few days / weeks / months time.

I can't even bring myself to play TSW now that it's free, due to the combat being boring.  Love the settings, but they really dropped the ball on the gameplay.

Exactly - me too.

I saw YouTube footage of TSW gameplay and it looked boring frankly  - turned me right off.

However, the comments on this thread seem to be describing a completely different game.

Id say if you are a part of the group of new MMO gamer's that are more into action combat it could be boring, but again, I'd say that you need to realize you are playing an MMORPG

If you like story, I think TWS delivers (from what I've seen from YouTube videos).

If you like being a bit scared (i.e. have a bit of realism / gore), I don't think this game's for you.

The combat doesn't look visceral - I think it should.

It looks like WoW mob pulling.
