This reminds me of the sort of fussy adjustments that CCP have made to Eve Online since 2008. Like CCP, Adventurine are spinning these fussy adjustments as 'major improvments'. 

 

It's not a successful strategy: CCP have been laying off staff in 2 waves recently.

 

The business model that Adventurine should be copying is Frontier Developments' development of Elite: Dangerous. The idea is that you fix your engine so that you can add more stuff easily to the game.

 

In other words, Adventurine should start to copy examples of success, not stagnation.

If the 100 islands that were removed are put back, I will return. This is a deal-breaker for me because my whole gameplay style required the isolated islands.
From what I have read, Valkyrie plays like an arcade game. The problem for CCP is that Elite: Dangerous plays like an arcade game but also has enormous depth. This explains why CCP are making this a Playstation game as well - they had to find a niche that wouldn't be competing with Elite: Dangerous, if you catch my drift.

Perpetuum isn't a bad game, but one thing to bear in mind - I believe that soon Eve Online won't be the 'gold standard' to compare this game against - I reckon that Elite: Dangerous will be the new 'gold standard' in terms of modern / evolved features.

 

You see, Eve Online has more-or-less stagnated since 2008, so it's no longer a straightforward 'gold standard', even though it's more similar to Perpetuum than Elite: Dangerous.

David Braben seems to have a low key approach to PR. However, the man's an absolute genius - he's usually thought it all through.  :o)

I hope EA do try and rip-off both Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous. 

 

Eve Online has never had any real competition at all, so the more competition they get the better. I've never forgiven CCP for abandoning their original mission objective of making the ultimate space sim in 1 game.

 

I hope CCP get the 'market forces' kicking that they richly deserve.

 

Eve Online is a game that involves market forces, so the poetic irony of CCP getting punished for their greed through 'market forces' will be so cathartic.

There are planned to be roughly 1 billion star systems. Bear in mind that there are only 7 billion humans on planet Earth!

 

I imagine that certain star systems will be far more popular than others, such as:

 

  • Star systems towards the centre of the Milky Way, so people can say that they have been as close as possible to a super-massive black hole. (sightseeing)
  • The Sol system to visit Earth etc. (sightseeing)
  • Seeded stuff of unusual interest. (sightseeing, missions(?), other)

I totally agree with you.

I think 3rd person is a mistake.

 

Oculus Rift will be introduced towards the end of this year, it's 100% certain to be a sell-out. Suddenly, 1st person games will be all the rage and nobody will bother with 3rd person any more (unless it's a strategy game).

I'm happy to financially back both SC and ED, and if just one of those 2 games turns out to be awesome, I'll be very happy indeed. Job done!

This is an unfair and cruel comparison.

 

Elite: Dangerous is already quite polished and is due for release roughly this October. Star Citizen is not yet polished, but that's irrelevant because its release date is way into the future.

 

Elite: Dangerous is about creating a living breathing universe. Star Citizen is mostly about an 'on rails', scripted adventure.

 

You can't compare the two games because you're not comparing like-for-like.

 

Personally, I'm financially backing both games.

 

My personal opinion is that Elite: Dangerous will be better. This is only because I love the idea of having a huge amount of freedom, and Elite is all about exactly that.

 

I expect that people who enjoy military life would prefer Star Citizen because it's mostly about playing your part in a war.

Yes, it's an MMO (if this is the option you select). However, the Elite universe is so large that even if every person on Earth played Elite: Dangerous, you would only see 1 person occasionally. 

 

Encountering a real human player will be a rare event. Encountering another player who has an 'Elite status' will be such a rare event that it probably won't happen for you.

Nope, they allow it as they allow people who make a friendly community for all (like someone mentioned already: EVE Uni which protects its members and fields pretty deadly PvP fleets in response to griefers and I do not know in their entire history if Goonswarm even ever tried to dick around with them so yes there outliers in both directions).

And yes you are quite silly bringing opinions and experiences into a debate based on objective facts, Hell if you even played the game for a weeks, asked questions in noob chat, talked to eve uni reps, etc, you'd find that the dick to nice person ratio is above 1:1 with the rest just going about their own thing. The only difference between WoW and EVE in respect to shit like this is that WoW scammers will find a way to do it that will make you unable to go to Blizzard whereas CCP knows to be so intrusive on player behavior is to fuck with the sandbox nature of the game and has a strict "Keep it to in-game/to in-game personas" policy. They've banned people for proven cases of out of game harassment based on in-game behavior (depending on the resolution of the situation by the players themselves the ban could be temp or full on permanent).

No offense here but first off Elite is not an MMO, it has drop in drop out-type multiplayer but you can also play it completely offline and second off: Learn from the morons who've been championing WoW-killers since time immemorial that an MMO never dies because of competition, it dies because of mismanagement.

 

The main point is this: people are reading this thread because they are uncertain as to whether they should play Eve or not.

 

The general advice is a resounding "No!"

 

The game is expensive for what it is.

 

It's a game that requires long-term commitment. What is the point in playing a game that requires long-term commitment when it's on a maintainance budget, the company is firing staff, and there are better games coming out on the near horizon?

I've been a victim of a GoonSwarm scam (I lost a billion ISK because of it). I don't think that this sort of behaviour is a bad thing - it makes the game more interesting.

 

However, I don't advise continuing with Eve simply because there are better games on the horizon. Elite: Dangerous should be a better game and it's scheduled to be released roughly this September.

 

Eve is entertaining, but it's no longer going anywhere as a game. All the new additions are not much more than maintenance, and there is no scope for anything significant to be added.

The amount of "free publicity" to their game during a content dry spell is why.   This little show was on each week for several weeks on many major gaming news websites.    It's basically a commercial that's ran, but cheaper than running a commercial.   Get it?  As many bad things I can say about Blizzard, I can admit that their marketing team is top-notch grade A and should be given an award of some kind (really wish that GW2's team or Wildstar's team would learn from them).

I disagree. Blizzard shouldn't need a marketing team - the product should be good enough to promote itself.

 

For example, the upcoming game Elite: Dangerous is promoting itself - the vast majority of the money seems to be going on improving gameplay.

You do agree with the rest of the critics on this thread, it's just that you wrote your critisisms in a slightly different way.

Eve ihas a very small MMO playerbase. 500k subs top where most are from players who have 5,10, even 20 accounts.

Which places it higher in subs than most any other MMORPG out there this side of WOW.  Who cares how many players the game has, it makes good money and has remained viable for over 10 years, far more than most other titles.

It is widely respected, even by many who don't actively play it, you can't take away their accomplishments no matter how bitter you appear to be.

Nothing like fanboys protecting there game. This game is filled wil players with 20 or more accounts. Heck when i played the game back in 06 i new about 6 players with 20 accounts. Some of them were into isk farming for 3rd party companies if you know what i mean. It was the first time i new gamers that did this because CCP didn't really care about this at the time. CCP was a really good company when it started out. They used to run the game out of a 3 family house in Iceland and they lived in it. But like with any company that grows it turns into crap when the suits get in. Eve was a fun game in its early days.

In addition, the pre-2008 Eve Online mission statement read something like this:

 

"The goal with Eve Online is to create the most immersive science fiction universe possible, which we will continue to build upon."

 

During 2008, this mission statement was deleted. CCP's pre-2008 EON magazines were far more interesting and upbeat than they are today. The last exciting edition was the 2008 introduction of worm holes. Since then, Eve Online's depth has plateaued.
