A WoW player's guide to Star Wars: The Old Republic - ARTICLE
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/14/09 12:36:01 AM
Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen this article. It's probably not really accurate since we know so little of the game, but it was an amusing read. |

Dragon Age is a good sign that the corporate culture that balances creativity and talent with financial and business necessities is still functioning at Bioware. That bodes well for TOR but doesn't change the fact that it will be the company's first MMO and it is a different office producing it. I don't put much into my experience with DA when it comes to my expectations of TOR. |

Rampant Fanboism on the official forums.

Fanboism may be at bad levels, but it's still better than Darkfall fanbois lol |

One of the reasons I'm avoiding this game. It's bad enough getting all the spam from player traders/crafters, but RMT spam on top of that? No thanks. Pity, the PvP looks interesting but that's not worth putting up with that kind of experience the rest of the time. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Hands-On Preview
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/07/09 12:25:51 AM
The first article I've read that mentions the rough feel of the game, but that's to be expected at this point. It's a good reminder the game is still far in development. The article also mentions the same problem with full VO that I'll have. I prefer having my own character silent even if I'm responding to NPCs. I wouldn't even mind if other player characters were all silent and only NPCs talked, but it's not a huge deal. |

I was in the Mythos beta as well and while it was entertaining, I think I'll be playing Torchlight now. Mythos was fun but Torchlight is like a more polished, even more entertaining upgrade (no surprise considering who's working on it) All Mythos could offer is an online aspect, but even then I'm not sure I'd try it again. |

Aion: "Vision" Trailer Not Footage of Patch/Expansion
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/01/09 12:49:20 PM
Originally posted by Sovrath Sorry, I call shenanigans. Developers are always so clear to point out when they show 'in-development' footage before a game's release. Videos they put out AFTER the release when they're trying to get subs shouldn't be any less accurate. This video is misleading. If NCSoft wanted it to be a video of not-yet-implemented mechanics then they should SAY so. Calling it a 'Vision' video is being deliberately obtuse since Aion marketing is already so full of flowery text. A 'Vision' could be a vision of beauty as well as a vision of the future. And don't think the PR types didn't know they were be misleading. They may not be brightest bulbs but even stupid people know how to bend the truth.

One of the MOST Pathetic Things I've Ever Seen...
Off-Topic Discussion « General Discussion 11/25/09 11:26:55 AM
Jack Thompson may have been disbarred for being the incompetent moron that he is, but his spirit lives on! I liked how the noob in the article included some good ol' silly showboat courtroom tactics. You're still with us Jack! |

So, is NCsoft listening? I don't know but HOLY HELL CHECK THIS OUT!
General Discussion « Aion 11/24/09 3:19:11 PM
I'll admit the vid looked nice. I might think about getting the game once these features are out and there are people who can confirm they're not causing any big bugs. BTW - Have they done anything about the spam-tells in the game?

Star Wars Galaxies: Three Million Quests Created This Month
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/22/09 1:28:30 AM
A much more impressive statistic would be how many of those quests were actually played and how much they were played. What was the most popular quest out of those millions? How many people actually did it? |

Sounds like they've already been shown the last two TOR classes. Well, I guess those will make a nice post-Thanksgiving treat for the rest of us lol |

Darkfall Community Publishing Program - BRILLIANT

But I think the only people who are throwing up their arms and exclaiming that this is a stroke of pure genius are the Darkfall/Tasos fans. The rest of the community is scratching their heads at it and wondering how it will turn out. |

General: Wood: Bridges, Cash for Players and CoDO
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/19/09 4:13:59 PM
I think the point of the article was that AV's player incentive idea is weird. It's too early to judge whether it's good or bad or even effective, but however it turns out, it is weird. That's not a necessarily a bad thing, innovation often seems strange at first. But Darkfall's already had a bizarre development history and Devs who seem to thrive on controversy and doing even more stuff like this to further add to that reputation could either help or hurt the game. Like I said, it's too early to tell. But it is weird.

World of Warcraft: Mr. T "Mohawk Grenades" Commercial

And people continue to wonder why WoW manages to entertain so many gamers? Yes, it's silly. Yes, it's ridiculous. But it's also funny and fun. Just like a good game should be. |

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: Major Layoffs at Mythic
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/18/09 4:05:11 PM
I remember people posting warnings when Mythic let EA into the picture. But I can't really see EA as the one to blame. Mythic had to have known there would be a price for getting help from a big company like EA. The price was that they either had to deliver on their promises or there would be consequences. These are the unfortunate consequences. The people who were fired have my sympathies. There were elements of WAR that I did enjoy. The general PvP mechancis, the Scenarios, Public Quests and some parts of the open world RvR were fun. But things like the forced mixing of PvE and PvP (esp in Endgame content and Crafting), the absolutely terrible zone layout and design, and the mediocre PvE content and needless timesinks really made the game suffer. Then there was the awful lag which I understand has only recently been fixed because of bottlenecking bugs they only discovered a YEAR after release. http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=949 Game performance lost Mythic hundreds of thousands of subscribers, no matter how good their PvP is. Waiting 1-2 minutes for a letter to be mailed was ridiculous. Crashing issues in open world RvR when it's supposed to be the main feature insured no one would stick with the game. I guess this just goes back to the old lesson that publishers still haven't learned. Releasing a MMORPG full of bugs is no longer acceptable. If it means you have to wait another year to fix them, then fix them. If it means your company has to post losses for several quarters because of that, then that's what it takes. Because you won't make any money trying to release a game too early. Accuse Blizzard of whatever you want, but they don't release a game before it's ready. They'll even cancel games that aren't turning out right (Remember Ghost?) One has to wonder why the brilliant CEOs of other companies (in any industry) haven't managed to figure this out. They're just too busy looking at the next quarter's profits instead of the long-term reputation and quality of their products.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: How Important is Marketing to Conan?
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/18/09 1:48:01 PM
Microsoft spent millions marketing Vista. Remember the Seinfeld ads? The whole 'Mojave' experiment? In the end, people still ended up hating Vista and it ended up being considered a failure. A bad product is a bad product. The fact that Funcom is slapping on bandages to AoC won't be covered up by clever marketing. It's not ActiBlizzard's marketing that made WoW into a juggernaut. We should all remember that all the ads with celebrities and South Park episode came AFTER the game became huge, the ads were just ActiBlizz's efforts to make the game even bigger. Blizzard made a decent product, no matter what some may think. It sold itself. |

Darkfall Community Publishing Program - BRILLIANT
General Discussion « Darkfall 11/18/09 1:37:37 PM
AV can't even advertise their game without stirring up the community. You have to wonder if they sit around trying to think of weird, pathetic ways to get attention. But the forum entertainment value of this game continues, so that's a plus. |
