How challenging can zombies be?  This game will be a ghost town within 6 months of release.
Thinking that a miniature collectibles game is going to be big is really stretching it.  The only thing Prodigy is going to be is a money sink.

They need to move to a FTP model similar to Rift if they want my attention again. You could put out about $300 before you get unlimited access to all the content, maybe more... whereas with Rift you spend about $20 for the extra souls and that's it, full access.

The grind to get the content for free ingame isn't even worth discussing, it's not plausible. Needs to get with the times...

I spend small amounts of money in the Rift cash shop each month.. just because they deserve it for not forcing me to spend large amounts of money in the cash shop. I'd do the same with LOTRO if they stopped being money grabbers.

I always wonder how people who claim to be long time players can post such nonsense about a game.  Been playing since beta and I think I have subbed actually about 4 months total and spent another $ 35 on the game and have access to everything.

Most people hate grinding TP.  its inefficient and boring.  He isnt wrong.  LOTRO is by far the worst freemium model, even worse than the old SoE model before they loosened the restrictions.

For example, even as a subscriber, you have to pay for an exp lock mechanism...per character.   As. a. subscriber.

I agree with both you and Vannor on this. I've been playing since beta and I don't think Ozmodan is being honest about this. The first several years were p2p which added up to a few hundred dollars, not including the xpac fees. Then after that players have had to purchase additional item and unlocks even if you sub and the 500TP stipend does not go far at all.

Very few people on the forums have done the TP grind. LIfetimers are the only account holders close to being able to do that reasonably.

LotRO has by far one of the worst payment models, in my opinion, of any sub-free game I play. Simply put it's not worth the money to return to the game.

As to beornings: While I think shapeshifting is fun, it is going to trash the look of the game even further. Runekeepers were not out of the realm of the spirit of the IP. Thousands of beornings running around Bree or where ever is going to look stupid. They are supposed to be rare. It's not a deal breaker for me, but it is the biggest stretch they've taken so far.

I only subscribed for a couple months when it came out.  I did not start playing again until it went f2p.  I have two accounts, one has all areas and storage unlocked with the max mount speed increase.   The second account is good up through Moria and there is enough TP on that account to buy the first Rohan expansion.   Outside of the 4 subs, I spent $20 on initial TP when it went f2p and another $14 on a Moria disk I found in a bargin bin.  I wait until something goes on sale and then buy it.  I don't play this game that much either, as Eve is my main game.    I played for 3 hours this morning and got 125 TP.

That is why I can't understand why people whine about the grind for TP.  Either they don't know how to play the game or they are blind.

Item shop money must be leveling off, have to get all those high end players to start buying in the item shop again to get their equipment up to the new level cap.  These f2p games are a real joke, as they incessantly milk their player base.

All I see so far is a standard Korean f2p game with somewhat better graphics.  Certainly do not see what is worth hyping it for unless you are really just into graphics.  I don't see anything in the way of gameplay that looks interesting.

Another sandbox bites the dust even before release.

EQN is all i got now for a AAA sandbox experince.

EQN is not a sandbox, it has restrictive classes and class specific equipment.  That alone makes it a themepark, no matter what Smedley wants to call it.

Not good when a non fantasy MMO dies.

Well this means that they are going to rely on Eve as their only breadwinner.  Nothing else they have done has achieved any success.

The problem with that line of thinking is that the game's ruleset is flawed by allowing many situations that allow bullies to thrive.    This in turn causes the majority of new players to quit.  I would be willing to bet this game has one of the highest turnovers for new players of any other MMO.

The downfall of this game is it is f2p with an expensive cash shop.  Give me a sub option and I might look at it again.

I find it hard to believe anyone thinks this game will be good.  Smedley is delusional if he thinks this is the next SWG, not even close in a thousand years....

If you are impressed by SOE and this announcement you have really low standards.  All it is is Dayz with a some crafting added. Good luck with that.  Go try playing Dayz for a couple weeks, you will be bored out of your mind.  H1Z1 will not be any better.   The pve in most games is more challenging than fighting zombies.  If they go with starting you with nothing, that will fall flat on it's face too.  We have already watched several games self destruct using a similar scheme.

I have to laugh at Smedley, he is so predictable it is pathetic.

SWG, SWG/CU, SWG/NGE and just prior to the transfers they pushed multiple expansions in to the game, in months what would have been years of development.

They also lost 90% of their subscriptions in a few months and never got them back.

People screamed, people begged for a classic server. They got ignored.

But if you feel better looking down on other people, don't let me stop you.

I'm going to largely ignore your initial statement because it was pointless. I will simply say that observable stereotypes exist as generalisations for a reason, and whilst you may not agree with them they tend to offer some accuracy worth considering.

CU and NGE were designed as a response to specific criticisms from players leaving the game, something that was happening long before they came out, and were also designed to allow the game to compete with World of Warcraft. The truth is that SWG was designed to be a mass market title, a genre king (like World of Warcraft); it always failed to live up to those expectation.

Whilst you may not agree with what they did to the game in an attempt to rescue it, it was a fairly reasonable response to the problem at hand relative to the targets the developers had. CU was a poor attempt, and NGE only made things worse, but SWG did not have a "golden age" as far as the finances are concerned, and it failed to deliver from day 1. The game was on a path to oblivion before CU or NGE came out, and whilst the two prolific content updates arguably made things worse, things weren't great to begin with. SWG may have been a critical success on release, but it was never the commercial success it was expected to be, even with the "Star Wars" brand name attached to it.

Mistakes were made. Smedley even went so far as to explicitly highlight, take responsibility and apologise for those mistakes. That's a fairly bold and brave thing to do, and worth a lot of kudos imho. He has also been frank about WHY those mistakes were made; SWG was on a life line practically from day 1.

Yep, SWG was hosed from the start.  It was hemorraghing subs well before the hated expansions.  I know a couple of folks who worked on SWG, and their private tales of mismanagement and screwed up development are just terrible.  They advised me against starting the game when it came out.   I've always suspected that one of the reasons they went to new systems (aside from the old systems just being broken) was that a lot of the coders left the project and there were huge parts that were unknowns to those left.

Nothing wrong with liking it at any particular point, but the rosey remembrances of everything being wonderful probably grow in the telling.

Seriously your inside information is not very reliable.  I worked in the same complex, lunched with the SWG programmers almost every day.   Smedley had a completely separate team implement NGE, the SWG team was not aware of the change until the day before it was implemented.  Hence the huge bug problems with NGE, the team that implemented it was not familiar with the code at all.  The SWG team felt betrayed and many of them left.

Actually they had about 450k subscribers at the point of NGE and they had just released a new expansion about a week or so prior to NGE and a lot of players had resubscribed.  A good number for those days, problem was that Wow had millions and both Smedley and Lucas Arts thought if they made the game more Wow like it would take off.

SWG was a game light in RP.  And heavy in the themepark quest to achieve Jedi.

You must have played after NGE because no one in their right mind would think SWG was RP light. That was THE RP MMORPG and none since has had an RP community even close to it since.

AGreed... "Themepark quest to Jedi"? What deos that even mean in reference to SWG?

Well I am sure he was talking about the original grind to unlock the Jedi character slot, but that was still such a small part of the game and also didn't come until around 5 months after release.

I was there from day one.  I was there before there were speeder bikes and you had to run every where.  FYI, Jedi was in the game from day one.  SOE just didn't tell anyone what the path was.  What I was getting at by quest to Jedi, and any so called sandbox.  Is that there is an unnamed / unspoken QUEST given out.  In a sand box it is typically go forth and thrive.  In SWG it was that and become a Jedi.

As for the light in RP.  I was going based on the number of weekly events that were published at the time. If there were 2 to 5 per server a week I would call that a moderate level of RP.   I would say 6 to 8 per server a week is heavy.  But one a week for all server at most 3 over all server in  week that is light.  Now I am not saying that there was only 1 RP event going on per week over all the SWG server.  But that one event probably ment 10 other were going on as well.  I don't count the load of sexting and dirty talk that went on in the Theed Cantina as RP.  Which I am sure the both of you do.

You cannot have played SWG with that kind of comment.  There were tons of rpgers out there if you took the time to look.  As to Jedi, most people ignored it because of the heavy time commitment.   That was the entire problem when NGE hit most of the servers were very heavy with RPers and the changes completely ruined their experience.  When Jedi started appearing everywhere the rpers left.

Next time don't post comments that anyone who played the game would know to be untrue.

As to H1Z1, Smedley long ago lost his mind, why Sony has kept this fool in charge at SOE is one huge mystery.  H1Z1 has failure written all over it.  The only successor it is, is to Smedley's constant failure to deliver anything close to the old EQ success.

Seriously, name me one Korean f2p game that has a different payment model here in the west?  Might be one, but I don't know of any.  Generally once it is designed as a f2p, there is far too much work to convert it to another payment model.

There is no difference in design among F2P and P2P games for sure. Or we shall believe that making AA, Rift, SWOTR, AION, Neverwinter and so many other games F2P changes their design?

It IS a major undertaking changing a payment model.  How can you be so naive?  Localizing one of these games is no easy task, converting a pay model just adds a lot of additional work.  Then you have to plan for game updates and converting them.  It is pretty obvious no one is going to bother changing the payment model with all the work that it entails on top of localization issues.

Sad Bungie is such a clueless organization.  Console players have short attention spans, they just don't stay with a game very long.  A 10 year cycle, that is ludicrous, they will be lucky to keep the servers up a year.

If you want a long term game, it needs to be on the PC.

Nice graphics, but that does not help gameplay much.  If it is true that classes are gender locked, what a waste.  It just means it is a prettier typical f2p game.  They all play the same with lots of grind.  Korean tastes and ours in the west just don't mesh.

But it is not f2p game. It will be in Korea, maybe in Japan, nobody knows what will be the marketing model in Russia or EU and NA. Because dev doesn't sell the game he sells the franchise for the game. And franchiser chooses the marketing model.

For the exact same price you can buy a blue ray player with Wi-Fi that gives you the exact same abilities.  I just do not see what this box offers over what is available and it does not even have a blue ray player?
PvP survival, the game is dead before it even started.  When will fruitcake developers grasp the overwhelming fact that games like this die on the vine extremely fast.  If you can't take the time to figure out that rules sets like this have a very high failure rate then you should find something else to do instead of wasting everyone else's time and money.

I did not even play 30 days on the last expansion.  I got a couple levels on my mains and stopped.  This game has lost it's luster for many of us.

Please stop wasting our time with this junk.  Mobile MMO's are years in the future when the hardware will support it.  This trash you are trying to push is just that, complete junk, that does not even come close to giving you any kind of a MMO experience.
