EQ2 Programmer Maevianiu has been working over the last few months on some significant performance tweaks to the EQ2 client and server, including at least one change that touched 10 year old code. As a part-time semi-amateur coder, that scares me deeply. So I’m gonna say it’s uberimportant that players login to Beta and test everything out to make sure these changes don’t impact any existing systems. It won’t just be a testing session though as it looks like there’s going to be quite a turnout of EQ2 devs on the Beta server today!

From Maevianiu:

We have our first round of performance increases on Beta right now. There are more coming, but this first round we want to do some load testing and get it out to live as quickly as we can. This affects every aspect of the game: quests, tradeskilling, items, combat, pvp-combat even housing. So we need to test as many different things as possible.

Please join us on the Beta server, Wednesday, August 27th starting at 3PM and going on until whenever!

Gninja is promising Punch and pie!

Your concerns are understandable but this is hopefully a great thing. It's the only problem I have with EQ2. I can't wait to see if this pans out some seriously golden frame rate increases across the board.

Guess I'll ignore my Monk I recently started playing again (since my first brief encounter with EQ2 years ago) and check out the Beta.

ludicrous my ass, there is money being deducted from my bank account under the guise of Trion Rift, for the purchase of a Trion Archeage founders pack, they obviously have my credit card details on file somewhere from years ago when i payed a sub for Rift, and now some newb in there has decided to charge me for a game i dont even wanna play, so all your bs about they "cant " do this and they " cant" do that, is ludicrous

C'mon man. Its not some clandestine charge under the "guise" of Trion. If I steal your credit card and buy a soda at a 7-11. The charge is going to say 7-11 on your statement. Doesn't mean 7-11 stole your credit card info and bought themselves a soda to buff their bottom line on the next financial statement.

I've taken to downloading authenticators onto my smartphone and setting them up...even for games I'm not going to play anymore. People are shifty fucks. I had the same thing happen at SOE once . It does suck regardless.

He clearly has some legit family and health issues and still there are stupid comments? Seriously, where was the turning point in gaming/internet where d-baggery began its infestation..

The guy blatantly doesn't care for the well-being others why should I care for him and his problems? It's a very legitimate reason~ Just going by his "no bullshit" policy anyways. Something like that finally comes back to bite him in the ass and now he realizes it. Just a case of someone who cared more about business than health/family.

Perhaps that was his policy. Corporate America sucks. But it's not like he's a hypocrite. He apparently went untreated for nearly a year and finished a job  while family members dropped around him.(granted MMOs are almost never finished by their nature) He seemingly took a "No Bullshit" policy to heart...even for himself.

Of course..I am just outside looking in ...so...

And paid the price for doing so which was my response to begin with. Why should I care?

we should always care. i'm sorry you disagree.

again..i'm am no fan of corporate America...or of much of anything anymore...

I am a fan of "hope" as cheesy as that sounds and as intangible and improbable of a concept as it may seem in these times.

Really?  The guy had cancer, ignored it for 9 months to get Wildstar out the door, lost 6 family member over the course of 9 months, and you are calling him greedy?  Really, what kind of heartless person does that?

You have to have had a heart at one time to have less of one at any point later.

The man did a job under such duress that would have likely driven many a person to put a bullet to the brain.

I commend him and wish him and his family the best of times ahead.

Wow. What a harsh year for him and his family.

Best wishes and what passes for a prayer from me these days.

To a shining future.

I feel sorry for people who hate games. They've let their standards get so high they can no longer enjoy doing something they love and have now poisoned their fun to the point where this is all they really have left.

When you hate things long enough I don't think you can ever really come back from it. It becomes part of who you are. You learn to find fault in everything instead of finding fun in what you're doing. It's why kids can enjoy just about anything where adults tend to think so many things are stupid.

I'd rather be able to find fun in what others consider a bad game then be the most right hater on the forums who doesn't like anything. People sometimes post that they've given up on mmos and act all proud of it. Yet they're the ones that lost something.

Amen.

Me?

Sir, you do realize this is a truck?

Yes, but I want a hatchback.  Take it in the back and do whatever you do to make it a hatchback.

But, it's a truck, we can't just turn it into a hatchback.

Sure you can, just chop off the end and put a hatch on the back.

Sir, but, but ... you have to understand this truck has a faulty engine and no steering wheel.  If you don't fix the engine and add a steering wheel it will crash!

*blank stare*

I would never buy a truck w/o a steering wheel to begin with.

Yeah. I have authenticators on every game that offers. Google app covers a few alone..then separate ones for the rest. Haven't had problems since I started using them. I've only ever had 2 cases..Guild Wars II..which was their fault despite what they tried to tell everyone. I mean...hundreds ..if not thousands of compromised accounts all at once can't all be user error. Especially since they had just announced that their security was compromised right after it launched.

Then SOE EQ2 account . Fortunately I had no credit card info saved and nothing missing. Plus I got some free shop coins from the idiot..$40 bucks worth. I only used the acct briefly 2 years prior and no other SOE games played for about the same time.

Gave EQ2 another chance &  I'm finding it really entertaining (despite the poorly thought out cpu hungry engine) but dead on my server.

Good ideas here.

I also hope they will eventually expand the professions a bit. Like Actually having missions to the various places that you can send your companions.

Off course open space for real bounty and smuggling missions would be awesome..but we all know that is unlikely to happen.

Sounds cool.

I know some people have issues with "invisibility" style stealth but I see no other way for now to simulate the ability  to sneak in an mmo that is not completely first person. When you can see everything in a huge radius around your avatar...it's kind of hard to be "stealthed" upon without an invisibility mechanic.

In first person ..sure.. Skills that make your footsteps silent..or gradually more quiet with advancement. Real camo techniques etc. That would be great. But for most mmos...true stealth is just not possible,

The system here as described sounds interesting and well thought out.

I've had my say about the labor system on other threads. The other problem most people point out is the questing system. Is it great..hell no. Is it that much different from the questing mechanics of just about every MMO out there..no. Did it promise to be different questing than any other MMO in existence? Not that I recall.

Do you have to like it cause I say so? Hell no.

I can foresee where the only quest many of my alts may do are the crafting quests that start you out which basically lead you into running trade routes...and maybe the mount quest. Other than that. You don't need to follow the quests at all. I roam around doing quests all over the place. At many points I was told to go see someone ..only to find I'd already finished the quests he/she was going to ask of me.

I mostly just roam about anyway...hasn't seemed to cause any problems.

I think it starts when some people get that small ego boost from what they once posted on some blog/forum/social media site. When it gained that first form of approval through agreement, appreciation or clicking on a upvote/like icon.

It was like feeding a fucking gremlin after midnight.

The ego bubbled , twisted and multiplied. Soon, in their minds, their opinions became truths. Not just another take or perspective but  dark malignant dopplegangers of something once benign. What may have held purity of thought..was now tainted and darkened.  Any light cast upon such mogwai mutterings will only serve to burn..and any attempts to water down the flames will just produce more trolls..er..gremlins.

Just like a cute cuddly Gizmo first beget the mean spirited Stripe

...a sign and portent of the endless misery to come.

OP is correct. It is just like the same ole Asian MMOs. As a matter a fact...it is really like most Western suited MMOs as well.. Hey..wait a minute...it's kinda like just about every MMO ever. With its quests..Quest givers & takers...its "x" of "y" kill/gather/fetch & grabs. Its pretty shiny eye catching graphics there to lure us in initially to its evil manipulations. I just noticed I have to press mouse buttons and keys as well. How did they sneak that one by me? So much for innovation.

..and I even like the game.

Which one  were we talking about?

It still has some beautiful designs but....man i wish they could somehow migrate to a primarily GPU intensive , or at least, not so CPU raping code/engine/whatever. There is really no reason why a 10 yr old game should not run at max settings..the highest settings....with a GTX 780ti ...8GB RAM and an i7 2600 (no K).  Eventually I'll have to upgrade my motherboard to raise the cpu power but I should not have to for EQ2.

Then again, I guess there is a "reason" for it to run like crap in places b/c ..well...it does.

I mean ..spikes down to 8 FPS...come on.

if you think about upgrading hardware;

I run a I7, 500gb+ SSD + extra 3TB HDD system, 32gb RAM, 64 bit obviously, SLI Geforce GTX 780 Ti's on glass fibre speed.

And it still has problems with the game.

Shame, I loved it back in the day.

See..my point exactly. My setup is fine for every game I come across so far..on high to highest settings.  Your setup is at least 1.5x as powerful with the same issues. The game is old..no reason for this except lack of forethought for future (though not that far ahead) tech. It's not like there were no GPUs back then...SO why lean so heavily on the CPU?

Oh well.

Milk.

Spilt.

The last of my tears.

Let's just face it. Many things have changed in gaming over the years. Alpha/Beta's are no longer as they were. Perhaps when the majority of gamers started treating them as free game-time or trials , instead of an opportunity to test , contribute to and help refine a game, is when developers started saying 'people should/will pay for this shit"..or maybe they're just greedy dicks...or maybe we're just cheap assholes....maybe everything combined. Anyhow....Things change. Sometimes for the better..sometimes for the worse. In most cases we'll live.

That said..if you want to have the full patron experience...then that would include paying. That's just the way it is. Would it be cool if they gave us a taste? Sure. But I have seen post ..over and over ..about how this or that game changed everything from beta to launch...because they allowed you to experience the full game...while stating their F2P launch model plain and clear. Still the  foul cries of "bait and switch!" echoed throughout the forums.

In the case of this game. There is plenty of info out there to make a decision and develop a pretty good idea as to the differences between patron and f2p experiences. Even without a free Patron trial.

You just have to tweak down the particle settings. That really reduces lag by a lot.

And if you play on Antionia Bayle (like I do).... a lot of the lag you experience might not be GFX related but server side related due to high load!

I have a character now on three different servers. All under 13th level at this point. Barely anyone about. I think i've seen maybe 15 players total...that I've noticed. Which is understandable...didn't really see too many newbs in starting areas on my server in wow a few months ago either. Anyhow, even at mid range with a few higher settings i get lag spikes down to 8 FPS or so on every one I've played.

Oh well....I do like my Monk and Swashbuckler. And they sure don't shy away from giving out free tidbits here and there. Even to da free bums like me.

You can upgrade your whole rig and get the bleeding edge hardware, but it won't matter...The reason EQ2 runs like this (and I think you probably know this b/c you said it in ur post)  is b/c the engine was designed for the for single-core CPU processors that never came along (basically two generations of single-core CPU's after what was being used at the time of initial development, b/c they wanted the specs to hold up through a few gens of hardware), rather then the multi-core CPU direction that design actually went in. In other words, SoE banked on the wrong tech, and EQ2 has been paying the price ever since. So no matter what the devs do, short of re-writting or replacing, the current engine it won't make much of a difference.

They actually hired a Graphics Developer (Ryan) who did some fantastic work on EQ2 and moved a lot of stuff (like Shadows) to the GPU.

He even did a Whole shader revamp, but sadly was never able to finish the job, before he was pulled from EQ2 to work on other games under Development at the time (DCUO they had major issues With and he needed to fix before launch I believe).

Sadly they never gave him the chance to go back and finish the job with the shaders, as man! The work he already did, EQ2 looked amazing! Much better.  /sigh and cry!

Multi-core CPU support was also added several years ago.

Not to say i didn't notice the changes. Big differences. Still just a bit let down b/c even after 10 years...the game would look very  sweet . If only at times It didn't feel like I was watching through every other window of a speeding strobe-lit rail car.
