Wurm online...if you only stay in the starting area (capped at 20 in all skills and you can't access a few (the only important one being Masonry).
A tale in the desert may also be f2p, i can't remember exactly |

I never said the industry was difficult, only that it took a certain person to do well in it. The same goes for every job on this planet and in certain cases it does tend to favour one sex over the other (Soldiers, Beauticians..ect). |

DDO had some sweet ones, but i would expect that being based off of DnD
WoW had some nice non combat quests (though very few and far between). I agree that there needs to be more (and a focus on crafting too) as combat is only fun for so long. |

Playing games and making games are two very very different things.
Just because 50% of gamers are women does not mean 50% of devs should be women. It takes a certain person to put up with an industry like this one and that bill often fits men more than it does women.
Also what about the other jobs in the industry? Why not get more women in the business side of things. Who said that we must have more female coder and artists (not against that but still) |

Are we talking races or factions?
WoW and WAR have 2 factions but both have more than 5 races.
Anyway if your after loads of races (and different ones at that) then look at Vanguard or EQ2. SWG has some nice ones and STO lets you make your own. |

11 year old whizz kid releases his own computer game.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/02/10 5:25:13 PM
An 11yr old making a facebook game is set to revolutionise the Northern Ireland games industry.
Either 1. There is no NI games industry and this kid plus that nerd who lives in the next street are the only devs or 2. The NI games industry is a sad sad excuse for a games industry.
Still, all props to the kid for making the game. All my games so far have avoided online/MP due to my hatred of networking. |

So long as it's not gonna spam ads at me or force me to pay for features i could not care less.
There are plenty of other programmes out there that do exactly the same thing as Xfire. |

General: Game Designers Address Misconceptions About PvP
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/02/10 5:12:59 PM
I dislike PvP due to the jerks who either 1. play the OP class to win or 2. glitch/use super dirty tactics to win.
I'm not against using some dirty tactics to win but constantly abusing the ones that are borderline glitching (shooting through terrain or abusing the collision system) is just bullcrap.
Thats really the only reason why i dislike PvP but unfortunately that pretty much sums up PvP in just about every game. The only game where i did not experience that (as much) was Darkfall but because i could never catch up to the other players i often found myself getting killed. |

What game(s) have dungeons that NEVER end? Are infinitely deep?
LFGame « General Discussion 8/02/10 5:05:35 PM
The genre you are looking for is Roguelikes
These are (mostly) procedurally generated games that generate an infinante dungeon (or dungeons) for you to run your character through.
However these games are not MMO's and nor will they ever be as currently procedurally generated stuff is a bit hard to do (smoothly) over a network and it's almost impossible to balance. |

Publishers, how much do they get involved in a game?
General Gaming « General Discussion 8/02/10 4:57:36 PM
it varies quite a bit on how involved they get.
Publishers often act as the bank for the game devs, they give them a notable investment in money (like a loan) which gives the devs the money they need to make a solid game. Sometimes the devs (if they had money left over from other projects) already have a prototype up and running or considerable early concepts up (or even have started making the actual game). In that case the publisher likes what they see and funds further development/full scale development. On the other side you have companies that set up at trade shows with nothing much to show but an idea. These devs are basically shopping for a publisher to fully fund the project before they set out to work on it.
In both cases the publisher often pushes the dev team to release their product asap (often with some very poor results) this is because the main source of income for the publisher is through sales and royaltees. The publisher often gets the biggest chunk when it comes to the income for the game (and rightly so as they provided the biggest investment).
At the most basic level the publisher handles all of the distribution for the game that a studio has made. |

General: Community Spotlight: If You Could Revive Any MMO...
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/22/10 4:16:20 PM
Ok i'l just get the stock standard answers out of the way
EQ1, the first game for many and (apparently) an awesome on at that. (from what i hear) The raiding was top notch, the questing was great and the zones where epic. Overall the game was awesome...hell it practically spawned the modern MMO industry. UO, The original sandbox. People have been crying out for a good sandbox and why not remake the one that started it all. An awesome array of skills to choose from and a world that let you be a part of it. It's only real downfall was time and some questionable dev decisions. SWG (Pre NGE), What can i say, this one has been discussed to death (it even has it's own separate forum on this site. The Pre NGE SWG was a highly unique sandbox game and while it did have it's bugs and it's issues, overall it managed to captivate it's audience and provide and experience they have never felt before (and apparently never will again).
That should just about cover 90% of the responses in this thread. Oh and i'd like to point out i have never played EQ1, only tried the UO trial (in 2009) and loved SWG to bits (Pre NGE). |

What mmo game world (the land itself) is the most intriguing?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/19/10 6:47:18 PM
I'd say Lord of the Rings ranks up there alongside Vanguard.
WoW gets an honourable mention but i really disliked how the zones transitioned (always bland or contrasting textures/environments) also the mountains as zone borders pissed me off to no end.
SWG gets an honourable mention too for being the only game with half decent terrain but overall a somewhat bland environment (though it was an old game). |

I thought it depended on the type of the weapon (Axe, Sword, Spear) rather than the level. |

it's a toss up between DDO and Vanguard
DDO: traps, voice over from a DM, solid stories, varied locations (to a certain extent), classic dungeon crawl feel Vanguard: Part of the world (big open world), hugely varied, fluid and open with enough quests to guide you but solid enough mob placement to allow constant action.
No game comes close to those two. WoW gets an honourable mention for their boss fights but thats about it |

Why Movies Will Be Better Than Games
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/16/10 6:37:28 PM
Originally posted by wisesquirrel i'd like to point out both MO and Darkfall are classless and i know for a fact Darkfall has player founded and run cities... The AI in Darkfall is also 1 step above the rest as it tries to flank you or gang up on you.
Anyway as far as Films vs Games. One is built to entertain for 2-3 hours the other is built to entertain for 10 times that. To be perfectly honest, if you find films better than games then stop playing games. I think almost every gamer plays games because they find them better than the other forms of entertainment. |

Questions from a potential new player
General Discussion « Star Wars Galaxies 7/16/10 6:32:20 PM
(from memory...or Pre NGE) there are mission terminals scattered around the cities.
Artisan terminal : gives off crafting missions Bounty Hunter terminal: Gives off missions to BH only. Involves tracking down and killing a single mob (can be on other planets) Mission terminal: Everyone can grab these ones. All are kill the creature lair for XP (they are usually 1-2k from your location)
That is all that i can remember but i am sure there was 1 or 2 other terminals out there. |

80h...holy shit dude.
I'd say take a look at Guild wars (gotta buy the boxed game but after that its 100% f2p) Dungeons and Dragons online (Very good game, was P2P and is now F2P) Lotro (not yet f2p but it will be). This one is most likely your best bet as far as solid raiding/grouping goes (though only towards the end of the game). Aside from that all the other f2p game are fairly weak in many/all of the aspects your looking for.
I'd seriously consider Guild wars though as there is so much content to enjoy and the PVP is awesome. |

With TOR, ME3, and DA2 all due about same time next yr....
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 7/14/10 7:42:06 AM
considering all three are from the same company i highly doubt they will come out at the same time.
Anyway i too would prefer a nice spacing between the titles i want but we all know that such a thing will never ever happen. |

The bounty hunter profession

dunno about the crafting. I always saw them as purchasers of awesome gear, not makers.
Aside from that i'd say your nailed it on the head. |

Will you be playing on PS3 or Computer?
General Discussion « Final Fantasy XIV 7/11/10 7:00:02 PM
Where is the option for both?
Will get it on the PC first (because it comes out first). If it turns out to be a decent game that i am still playing by March then i will grab it on the PS3 for relaxing grinding. |
