gate grind like EvE is.  Also,  does EvE allow people to go down to a planets surface?

you can in the next update (but thats beside the point).

The real problem with STO is they are aiming very much at the casual MMO market which really detracts from the depth of an MMO and results in (most cases) a boring game

in my mind the best system is one that i picture from the Felix and Gotrex books.

Both Felix and Gotrek basically beat the living crap out of everything quickly and before they can hit them.  Those that they don't kill quickly require blocks/parries (active block mechanic?) and those that manage to get by (very few) either (with luck) only graze them (slowing them down but not killing them) or severelly injuring them.

Such a system relies much more on active blocking and parrying (as most of the time you would either miss or be blocked or parried...much like in real combat) and keeps the BBEG relativelly the same (the Dragon isn't going to dodge much but his scales and size make up for it with armour and lots of HP).

Such a system in my mind is much better, there are still heals, dps and tanks but there is less of a focus on those specific roles

e.g

Archer:  Doesn't need much armour as he isnt going toe to toe, really good damage (arrows freaken hurt) but he misses quite a bit (it's hard to aim a bow in combat).  If needed hes able to dodge well enough to avoid most missile shots from the Dragon

Warrior/tank: The Armour is there to make up for his slow dodge,  He uses his big ass sword and/or shield to parry/block most attacks (most of his attention is focussed on his block timings as one slip will be painful but not fatal like the other guys).  He doesn't need to do much damage as his main focus is to be in the beats face trying to get a killing blow

Rogue:  Better armour than the archer, has very very good dodge and if against blades, a decent parry (not so good against a dragon tail or claw).  His main job is basically dodging any attacks aimed at him (few if he does his job well) and positioning himself in a decent spot for a nice blind spot attack.  He doesn't specifically do more damage than the tank but his positioning and his quickness allow for more painful and quicker attacks (if hes lucky).

Wizard/healer:  Tossing a few magic attacks here and there to see which one will hurt the beast.  His defence is mostly magical (so he doesn't need armour or dodge) and need to work on shifting his magic from defences to his offensive spells (like the block system).  Heal wise he can toss a few small heals on the tank if he misses a few blocks but most of his attention will be on taking down the dragon.  After the fight he can heal more than just wounds such as helping the others regain their energy or calming them down.

To me this system has enough of the old elements to be somewhat familiar while improving upon the lame aspects of the old system.  The only downside is the active defences as some people can be slow to react or get confused.  Everything else is already done in most MMO's (positioning, aggro, switching abilities to suit the situation)

wait, what?  when did it become Space Marine only?

Screw that, i had an awesome view that it was going to be 5+ planets that 5+ factions (or species) battle for.

If its Marine only then that MMO has officially been ditched by me

What went wrong:

People named Abe like Game A, and similar games.
People named Bob like Game B, and similar games.

1. SWG sold a game like Game A.
2. The Abes liked it and stayed.
3. The Bobs hated it and left.
4. SWG patched the game to be like Game B, in order to appeal to the Bobs.
5. The Abes hated it and left.
6. The Bobs were still gone; they weren't coming back.

this.  I don't know ANY business in the world that thinks it can release a product, change it some time down the track and expect people who tried it before (and hated it) to try it again.  In this world you have 1 shot, don't waste it.

if your level 10 then for memory your not past the fairly linear section of Vanguard (the tutorial).  After that its questing all over the world (no linking quests to the other continent, just pick the one you like most and  go for it) and of course (Vanguards best feature) its dungeons.

The way you vented you dislike for WoW shows you have no doubt already made your mind up.  Anyway i highly recomend Vanguard and i suggest keeping your LFG option on every time you log in because the dungeons are just superb and a blast to play with others.

i'm always amazed that people can write such long winded posts but can't seem to do this in other aspects of their life (School, work...ect)

Anyway the only real decent part of that entire post was the ending.

Yes, please just shut up and play (for those who want to play)

Have a few questions before i retry this game:

Back in Beta and release, the sword fighting combat seemed rather clunky and awkward. From the new trailer, it looks a lot more polished.  Is this so?

It is a hell of a lot smoother than in beta (i too was a beta tester) and it seems to flow much more smoothly

Has the character creation changed at all since opening?

Not that i can remember, seems to be the same old options (although you can make some pretty varied outfits)

Is it very difficult for new players to get decent ships, for example, new players would have to grind several hours a week just to be able to afford a ship?

Depends on the faction.  Roll up Spain and France (underplayed) and if your nice enough some people are more than happy to give you a ship.  That being said you do get a ship early on from missions and the prices of low level ships are quite small (you just have to grind the levels to sail them :P)

Thanks

I jumped back in, spent a few days picking a server and finally decided on Roberts.  I rolled Spain because they needed the population and it seems to have been a decent decision.  Overall its a pretty fun game and is much more fluid than it was in beta.

wow a double blue post, you don't see that everyday...

The above post raises some very good points but is also very general in his view on the programming skills.  Granted jobs can be tough to get but ultimately in this industry you must specialise which means cutting off some options (for further delevopment).  This also means you can infact specialise in one or two areas during your training (e.g i wont be doing 3d programming or networking.  That reduces the math skills i need (but math is still important)).

Does that mean you can ignore some of the more demanding requirements of maths and physics?  Sure but only if your chosen specialisation doesnt need it and only if you know you can get a job from those specialisations.

if you where wondering some specialisations are:

AI

Networking

3d programming

UI programming

Scripting (boss fights for example)

*looks at the current crop of Sci-fi MMO's*

I think there is more than enough room for something that isn't EVE or Star wars in this market.

4. What tv channel is known for video game reviews?

Don't know because we don't have video game tv channels in Australia

5. Who is thought to have created the first video game?

some geek from the 1940's no doubt

i've only heard subpar/bad things about this so no, i don't think it will be the first AAA quality FTP MMO...especially considered DDO online is FTP...

Haha, over here we have strict bandwidth caps and internet protocol shaping, resulting in the protocols used for gaming being given a lower priority than HTTP traffic, for example.

It's really not the end of the world...shaping is about the only issue gamers have to worry about, not bandwidth caps. Thankfully, we're experiencing the opposite phenomenon here as undersea cables for...Africa...are being laid and prices are dropping drastically.

come live in Australia, The no1 place in the Western world for sub par internet

my current plan (there are better ones out there):

10g per month (onpeak) 100g (offpeak , recently changed from unlimited).  Max download speed is roughly 250kb/s and upload is sub dial up speeds.

And for all that (and line rental) your looking at $40 a month.  Oh and if i go over its 10c per mb

realistically a tank is just a fluffing big ship (battleship, flagship, carrier) and a science/support vessal is a repair ship/resupply ship (which are used quite often) and the dps is just a frigate or Destroyer with a crapload of guns on it....

anyway i don't mind so much but tbh...ditch the tank ship and make everyone either a dps or a support with varying degrees of tankability.

This will most likley not end well... Unless they have a very very solid product in their hands this feels abit short on testing.

But then again rumors has it that Blizzard will be releasing an expansion earlie next year so i can understand if they arre scared shitless.

Will give it the benefit of a doubt and stresstest it, also my GF is a trekkie so i guess it comes with the territory

scared shitless of what?

As if any company in this genre can out sell a WoW product (even if it is an expansion).

i knew sound guy was gonna be on the list.  No matter what game it is the sound (except for music) is always briefly praised then ignored.  I want to meet the guy that did all the explosions in Company of Heroes because that man did one hell of a job.

I don't subscribe to many asian games but I've heard that this type of gaming is the norm in Asia.

...

I believe most MMOs in Asia use a Pay As You Go type of subscription model. This is akin to buying a cell phone with hours on it, and buying more hours when you run out of time.

this.

Quite a few Asians don't end up paying as much as we would for a month (usually the non hardcore ones) and so they tend to purchase store stuff to either catch up or because they have some money to spare.  It's also a community thing.  If 60% of people use the shop (and it has a direct impact on the gameplay) then it creates an atmosphere where the shop is not only encouraged but is expected to be used.

i've always found local markets to be far more engaging and fun to play with than a large market.  If it was up to me i would say have the major cities (capitals) linked in certain items (ones that are conceivably obtained in that other city).

That way its possible to send stone between the 2 mountain towns but you will need to transport it physically between the mountain town and the forest town.

just my 2c

i can see it now.  Instead of going with your guildies in raids your forced to use their matchmaking system that randomly shoves you into a raid group.  It then divides the group into teams consisting of everyone with the letter J in their name on one side, everyone of rank 4 or higher on the other and distributes the rest to even out the sides.

/sarcasm off

Cash machine and it wont work as an MMO
