Just started EVE, any tips/advice for a new player ?
Jita (General) « EVE Online 1/21/12 8:20:04 PM
I made a mistake when I first tried it of treating it like any other MMO. I didn't know what I wanted to do so (like I did in every other MMO) I wanted to try everything out then settle on what I liked best. This simply can't be done in EVE, it's too big and too complex for you to really get a grip on everything. So on that I suggest you pick something you really loved in another similar game (trading or manufacturing from Anno, combat from space games or even PvP) and do that well (devote your skills and time to getting better at that). Once you have that one aspect of the game downpat you will have enough EVE experience to branch out a little into new and interesting areas. Basically don't make the same mistake I did. Pick one thing, do it well and your time in EVE will be far better for it. |

The rush is getting old already

That is exactly what killed DDO online (a similar game in regards to awesome story telling). To counter this though you simply group up with friends/guildies instead of random pugs. I know it's not always possible at times but tbh I find it's just not worth my time to do it with a pug. Even if I really want the story I will simply come back at a higher level and redo it or help a friend through. |

artickle about top 10 flaws of guildwars 2.
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 11/28/11 8:44:18 AM
I'm sorry but no 3 and 2 are by far the most bullcrap things I find in PvP.
It shouldn't be 100% obvious what an opponent can do before you get into combat. You should get some hints (hes in plate armour and wearing a big axe, hes probly a bit tanky and melee) but a quick glance should not tell you 100% of what they can do (like it is in WoW).
Silhouettes have been a bane for me in many games as I feel it destroys the game in an attempt to keep "recognisable" silhouettes (WoW is a good example, their armour got stupid very fast). |

Beta review by Lobotomist - *( non fan point of view )
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/27/11 4:59:55 AM
My views of the game where slightly more favourable but I am still tossing up whether its worth buying or not.
Ultimately it comes down to the endgame and what they will offer and unfortunately it seems like this will be a weak part of the game.
Still, beta testing this game was fun and I do hope future MMO's take the good parts of this game and carry them forward. |

League of Legends: Legendary Skin 'Blood Lord Vladamir' Announced!
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/21/11 7:30:24 PM
I understand that you need to crosspromote your new website, that little box on the main page is more than enough. Spamming the main news section of the MMO part of this site however is just silly. Please stop and go back to MMO only stories (why most of us come here) and keep plugging your other sites in their sections of this site. |

Uncharted Waters Online: First Anniversary Event Kicks Off
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/04/11 7:30:52 PM
I find it fun but my god is it grindy. Plays out kinda like a 16 century sim. You can trade all over the world (literally, they are only missing North America (coming soon) and East Asia (coming in a few weeks). You can also battle pirates/bandits all over the world or (if you don't mind getting barred from ports), other factions (France, Spain...etc). Finally you have adventure which basically involves sailing around the world searching for hidden artifacts. It has never really caught my fancy so I never bothered with it but some of my company (guild) members do it and they enjoy just cruising the world hunting down artifacts. |

Are the wrong people developing games now?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/29/11 2:42:08 AM
As someone who is currently studying games development (not at some stupid degree factory, but at a place started by and run by actual games developers), I can tell you that most people who get a "games degree" wont make it into the industry. As much as people would like to blame crappy games on too many inexperienced devs, the fact of the matter is that the games industry is one of the hardest industries in the world to get into. If your crap (like many of my classmates) then you wont get in, period. The problem with the industry is more the direction studios are taken after a few successes, by the management team (who are chasing $$ and not fun games).
If you look deep enough you will see that most game studios start out small with a dedicated and talented team, they release some awesome games and make some money and expand. Eventually a publisher teams up/buys them out and that's when the talent leaves and the studio stops innovating and producing fun games. Those guys who started it all (and are now gone) move on and start a new company and the cycle starts all over again. |

Age of Empires Online: Launch Day Impressions
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/16/11 9:03:29 PM
Its quite fun, as for the MMO elements...it's lacking a little. I did have loads of fun playing co-op with a friend.
I'd like to avoid buying a premium civ until the Romans come out. Thats about my only issue with this game on launch, only 2 factions is a bit lame. |

I find it retarded that appearance tabs aren't in all modern MMO's (WoW has enough of a dev team to be on par with the modern ones). Lotro has it and its one of the best features about the game. Not a single person looks the same and the game is better for it. Anyone who thinks it will ruin PvP with that stupid silhouette crap (a quick mouse over works too...) will be happy to know that Lotro found a solution in that appearance items are disabled in pvp areas.
As for whether it would make me play WoW again...no. I have had my fill of that game forever and I have moved onto other MMO's (not before clocking up nearly 1000 hours though). |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: The 15 Year Plan
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/31/11 8:10:33 AM
Because Everquest 1 didn't need to complete with a massive market of compeditors on release. Everquest 1 also looks like crap and lets be honest, has some seriously archaic gameplay elements (but what do you expect from such an old game).
One thing I think people are really missing out on is how detailed said plan could be. On the one hand they could have designed some crazy expanded universe full of features...on the other that 15 years could literally be a few dot points and years for when they expect expansions to take place. |

Its pretty good but it is no MMO (unless you count clan wars...but thats a stretch)
As far as the game goes the balance is a bit whack (you can get paired up against tanks you have no chance of killing) and there is Russian bias/German hatred. In other words, don't play Germans unless you really like those tanks and can stand to get knocked around by your "equals" from Russia.
Overall the game is decent and is very fun at low tiers. It gets a little bit grindy the higher you go (double that if you have no premium) but it can be very rewarding. |

As another poster stated above, the chinese games industry is all about copy paste tried and tested formulas. While i am sure more and more chinese studios will buy up western ones, i do not see a chinese studio (on it's own) making a successful AAA mmo for the western market. |

World of Tanks: E3 2011: World of Tanks Impressions
News Discussion « General Discussion 6/21/11 8:48:40 PM
Yeah i personally would lable it as an online shooter rather than an MMO.
Then again you do unlock tanks through XP (grind) and Credits and you also upgrade the tank and crew so it's not exactly like an online shooter either (where you pick your class which is exactly the same as every other person using that class on the map). |

Why the free-to-play hate? Does f2p = p2w
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/06/11 1:47:50 AM
f2p is fine and no it does not = p2w. Having played both heavy PvE f2p and Heavy PvP f2p with cash shops I can say that I have found cash shops to be perfectly fine so long as they are balanced.
So long as the cash shop doesn't offer a pay to win option then it's all good. |

The one thing that could 'kill' this game's mass appeal in the West...
General Discussion « ArcheAge 5/31/11 7:29:14 PM
If open world PVP means the economy is stable and actually a viable avenue of play (Crafters, traders...etc) then I am all for open world PVP. Having it for the sake of having it when it has next to no impact on the world is just crap and why most people dislike it.
Was just playing a game similar to EVE but set in the age of sail and it had safe waters and hostile waters. Hostile was open world PVP (with factions and Pirates) and it worked wonders because the hostile waters where all along trade routes to the richest trade goods. That meant if you wanted the big bucks trading you had to take risks. It also meant the open world PvP'ers could actually make money by raiding merchants. Of course the option was there to simply stay in the safe waters and trade but the money wasn't as good. That kind of system works wonders for both parties involved. |

So for those who play this on an Xbox (i don't) you guys have to fork up a monthly fee for online play and now a monthly fee (if you want "premium") for the no1 fps on said console...man thats lame. |

World of Tanks: Patch 6.4 Explodes Onto Servers
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/17/11 9:07:10 PM
It's awesome that this patch is out (though there are a few bugs in it at the moment) but I really think they need to look at how they patch things. As it stands this patch is huge (in both size and changes) and could have easily been broken down and delivered over the course of the past two months. releasing big patches with huge gaps of time inbetween sucks for balance issues (seems like they aren't working on it) or bugs as you often wait as long as people who wait for new content.
Still, at least the patch is out and they can focus on the clan war (i.e the actual MMO part of this game) and the new American and French tanks. |
|
|
Well it sounds like you want clan wars, which are expected to be in the next patch.
At the moment there is a serious void in the game when it comes to team play as the options are too limited (3 man platoons, compedetive 15 player teams but require other 15 man teams to be online too (they ever are) and the training room (pointless)). I still disagree with the community being 80% terrible but I guess I may have been lucky/you where unlucky with the matchups. |
