Actually the merges keep the band playing a lot longer.

Last night I logged into one of my unmerged servers. It was 2AM EST, but when only 1 other person is there, that isnt a good thing. TOR has lost a number of folks due to dead servers. That is no longer the case as they have bigger numbers on servers than they ever have.

The PVE side of things is getting fixed up. Group finder n more new content are next on the list. I have no clue what they can do about the PVP folks.

The sad thing is most of the PVE additions should of been in at launch.

on december 26 when on official forums you got a thread thats " OMGAD SKILL DELAY PEW PEW PEW" and theres 1000 comments and its been viewed 100k times and devs actually commentate saying that everything was working as intented (who saw it knows the comment im talking about, was left only a few hours untill removed from mods but I saw it) insulting the players telling them they are at fault....really explains everything.

Thats pretty much exactly what the lead dev from Mythic did to to everyone complaining about broken bright wizard DoT stacking & pvp magic resistances not working at all (with evidence). Maybe since biowares been helping them out with WAR the dev in question has been "mentoring" the SWTOR devs ? ;)

All of the half decent Mythic developers left after they were moved to WAR btw. Mythic being blamed for Warhammer is like Bioware being blamed for Mass Effect 3's terrible plot holes and gameplay. We all know that EA outsourced most of the code for ME3 overseas, and then took a slightly "Creative" direction with it after the basework was done. All of the talent from the original Bioware are gone, and now it is EA-Bioware...the name alone.

Damn you havent a clue.

The plot holes are obvious in the ME3 ending, but the game itself is the best of the 3. ME3 is an upgrade to the combat of ME2, and a more RPGish experience that harkens back to ME1. To top it off, the MP  turned out to be a good time.

I understand you wanna call BW the debil, but it would be nice if you dealt in reality. The ending of ME 3 did indeed stink for some, but the game till that point is a very solid RPG experience. The gaming world would be a much better place if all games "stunk" like ME3.

If SWTOR really has only 200-300K players left, then EA will shut it down very quickly. They shut down E&B because it wasn't "profitable enough", so they definitely won't run a loss-making game.

So as long as SWTOR is open for business, it means EA are making "enough" profit, regardless of what third-party sites may say about the population

Remember they have to be as "surprised" as us when more factual numbers are released. Even then there will be multiple cloak and dagger approaches to finding out.. Expect some "delays" with the whole shut down. An attempt to maintain face..

Suuuuuuure.

The game either floats on a P2P approach, or they go F2P with the mega cash shop. Either way, TOR isnt going anywhere.

I hope it doesnt go F2P, but that seems to be the business model these days. Games like EVE double dip.....sub plus cashing in on plex sales among players. I hope we see a non P2W item shop long before they consider F2P.

If I was in charge, I would add a bunch of DLC PVE content in conjunction with kicking out as much free PVE content as possible. EQ used that route(although the free DLC was minimal), and it was top dog until WoW hit. IMO the most important thing you can do for PVE gamers is keep the new content rolling.

Eh not sure how they've been messy..

Very very few problems with the actual transfers. They process very quickly. The transfers are pretty obvious. (West coast PvP servers -> to west coast pvp servers, RP-Pvp servers -> to rp-pvp servers...)

I think this is much better then what Rift did with the free transfers early on. All the other games I've played have always charged for server transfers or just merged servers completely.. So that's about the extent of my expirience.

I transferred four characters in barely 5 minutes. For me it hasn't been an issue.

KT the issue once again was communication. They must have Ohio State folks informing the community. We hear about the minor stuff, but the major things are hidden so deeply it takes a Freedom of Information request to get to the heart of the matter.

I am of the same mind though when it comes to the actual transfers themselves....my characters were there faster than I could get logged in.

One thing that really irks me about F2P are the typical limitations.  I cant stand currency limitations or chat limitations.  There's all sorts of others too, such as inventory, making a guild, all that stuff.  Almost to the point you are handicapped and thats just not enjoyable.

So sure Id mess around with Swtor some if it went F2P and I can deal with a cash shop even a pay to win one in that type of game.  What I cant stand are the limitations and if that game has those, I wont generally mess with it.  I was kind of looking forward to playing STO again when it went F2P but then I saw the limitations and never even tried going back in.

Its just not worth it.

Yeah, I saw that shit when I logged in my old EQ accounts after it went F2P.

Having established characters, I didnt have to worry about class/race restrictions. The money/AA limit though was in full effect.

I got a sneaky feeling that if they do look convert a F2P system, they packed as many of us subs on server in the hope folks will stick with a premium service. Use the freed up servers for the free folks. I doubt I hang around if it goes F2P. I will more than likely finish the class stories, then be on my way.

The article was pulled, so no clue what the status of things are. I thought Daniel Erickson was be the one to talk about this stuff anyways, but according to what I read, more info would be available in GamerTM magazine's next issue IIRC.

The way TOR is sinking like a rock in the mariana trench, SWG is going to look like a stellar success, LA may have to beg SoE to bring it back out,  so that someone is still playing a Star Wars MMO....Either that or they will just give up, and settle on people playing the new 1313 (which BW probably isn't too happy about since they can't keep subs as it is).

Yeah OK.....keep telling yourself that.

SWg was so bad they revamped it not once, but friggen twice. When TOR has its first in game mechanic overhaul, come talk to us.

SWg launched as burnt n crispy as Owen, and folks were a lot more forgiving back then. Hell the devs over at Bethesda were high fiving each other cause there was a buggier game than theirs. Unlike the ES games, there wasnt shit for PVE content in SWG. The game had huge ass parking lots waiting to be built on.....and the players kept waiting until they could actually build their future ghost towns.

Whatever happens with the sub model, TOR will be fine. Those wanting SWG back....not so much.

I dont care what their reasons are, I hate the sale of game items for cash. I say bravo to them, although China is the one that would put a huge dent in the problem if they would do the same.

WoW already does WoW good.

If you like icecream, doesn't mean you only want Ben&Jerry's. If you like beer, doesn't mean everyone'll only stick to one brand or type of beer. So I don't see why there should only be 1 WoW-style themepark, just as it makes little sense if there'll only be 1 MMOFPS for everyone, or 1 sandbox MMO for all. Not everyone only wants to play the same MMO in a genre for 5+ years, they might like to taste other ice besides Ben&Jerry's, but still icecream and not apple pie.

This is why your analogy sucks. Well...besides the fact all analogies suck. Many aren't saying themeparks are bad. They're saying copying WoW is bad. Big difference there.

Actually WoW isnt bad, but it should be the end of one side of the scale. EQ should be the other extreme end....themeparks should aim somewhere in that range IMO. TOR went too far away from that scale for some to wanna keep playing.

the TOR guys could of given the game skills to go along with lvls ala EQ/WoW. Crafting has it....why couldnt combat as well?Dont tie a player into a single weapon type. That mechanic alone gives a completionist mega hrs to finish their compulsion. Throw in some collections like EQ2, and they are gonna be sporting woodys for many months.

Worlds.....did we need so many? Eight or maybe even less would of been fine to start. Give a reason for high levels to go back to lower level areas, like the named MOBS that smacked ya when low level.

PVP....the whole thing has been a cluster fuck. Was it needed? If so, why not reserve one world for it, and not spread your population to so many servers. Had they made those folks an addicting game style would be one thing, but they didnt. Throw in the letting the exploited stuff on Ilum stand, and it is a major black eye.

Still not awake yet today. There are other things I could add.  People think some of us cant see issues, but to that I say constructive criticism is good. Being a spamming troll in a live game forum is not.

I was waiting for another SWG to... (my first sandbox)

It doesn't surprise me that that dream was crushed, but it doesn't bother me so much either, as I saw this coming from a mile away and saved my 100 bucks :) that and I had no hope to give

I guess that this can serve as a warning to future devs, be careful of following your vision if you are retarded

I know what you mean, but SW:TOR was pretty blunt about what they were doing game-wise. Daniel Erikson even was mocking people for suggesting that an open world where you can bump into people at random would even be of value or fun. That and the SW:TOR fanboys keep refering to have SWG as the "Uncle Owen experience" whereas SW:TOR is somehow is "heroic" (note to fanboys: SW:TOR is anything but heroic).

So they pushed it into being a instance-based grinder WoW-clone. And there are enough of those already.

And you shouldnt be?

I really get tired of you guys holding SWG up as some kind of gaming Nirvana. It did so piss poor the gaming systems were revamped not once, but two friggen times. EQ was a much better game during that era.

The server merge is needed. It would of been needed by normal attrition. BW seemed to want to open a new one on the drop of a dime at launch. So not only did they spread the crowd out, they seem to enjoy having folks bitch about them. I say this cause everytime you turn around it seems they wanna make a bonehead move.

Other than too many servers at launch, the only error that is as severe is the PVP....and it was major. I dont like PVP myself, but if you are going to advertise a great PVP focus, then you better get it right.

I love the PVE portion of the game. Some of the decision making going on behind the scenes......not so much. Right now they have folks waiting on server merges till next week. It is minor, yet once again it gives folks a reason to complain. Had they been up front since the process started, and let folks know "X, y, and z  server wont be moved till next week" , I think they would of been much more accepting. Instead they waited all week, and were told the news today.

The game isnt going anywhere, but had it launched in the direction it is going(new content), it wouild be sitting much better.

In typical Bioware / EA fashion, too little, too late. It is good that they are finally getting around to server merges, but until they actually start getting ahead of the curve with this game, and starting to roll out updates & fixes when they are needed, instead of after people have been complaining about them for months, I really don't things improving much. SE had the same problem w/ FF. Beautiful looking game, had some strong points, but they just took way too long to fix things that should've been there from the start. By the time they fixed the things that should've been in @ release, they were already behind on some of the early problems that arose after.

You can't consistantly be late to the party and expect to come out ahead.

Agreed

They need to steal Scott Hartsman from Trion. What he did with EQ2 after getting the reins was simply awesome.

No need to pan handle now.  SWTOR has shown that themeparks are not a safe investment, and now maybe some devs will be more willing to take risks.   And even if I am wrong here, and the bean counters will never ever ever ever ever ever agree to make a sandbox game, it doesn't change just how bad a game SWTOR is.   At the very least developers will think twice about cloning WoW.  And why would I want to get over myself when I'm so great?

Lol thanks for the laugh. it is nice to have dreams though..even though they are just dreams. Themeparks will always be proftable a lot more than sandbox can ever be with exception of EVE.

Keep dreaming.

KOTOR was the wrong themepark, people want Vader, Han, Luke and Lea.   Thier biggest mistake was not the theme but not rounding out the game, you need a little sandbox in it to make people happy.    That was the single most disapointing thing for me, no place I could call my own.   Having a bank in your ship and calling it customizable is marketing lies.

The single best feature that SOE had going for its games is housing and item placement in the housing.   Second best thing SOE does is crafting, SWG had the best crafting and resource gathering system ever in any MMO.    Another thing that disapoints me is that the worlds are theme park roller coasters.     They dont look alive and are completly static spawns.    Maybe its me but the open world map is the way to go.    Random spawns make the map look and feel like the game is changing.

You can pick out alot of the good points of all the MMO's and it amazes me that the developers arnt designing games that people want.    I hated the NGE but damn was the pvp fun.    Whoever blends a themepark and a sandbox and gets it right will be the next king of the hill.

Give it a rest would ya?

SWG couldnt beat out EQ, and WOW took it to a whole nother level. Lack of housing/crafter centric loot system isnt the issues that have faced this game.

In no order

Rubber banding

Claiming a good PVP game for folks into that type of gaming when it sucked. HUGE backlash.

Typical MMO mainstays....group finders, Custom UIs, etc

Lack of end game content. Too short to max lvl for most causing nothing to do at 50

Setting servers to hold very few at launch. They adjusted like 2 weeks in, but by then most had their server

Communication.....they ended up firing the community manager.

BW has shot their selves in the foot the entire way, and whether B2p/F2P/stay the same, it still is sitting in much better shape than an Owen fest. The problems are being sorted, but for many, they left and arent coming back. There are quite a few of us still playing, but there would of been a bunch more if the items I listed hadnt been an issue.

122 servers down to 19. Thats a rather large transition.

They are not finished, and there are 214 servers not 122.   Theres probably giong to be 14 servers when they are done according to scoprs predictions.

there are not 214 servers in total there are 171 in total, 123 US, 45 EU and 3 Asia-Pacific.

if 123 servers are becoming 19, the ratio is 6.47 Servers to every 1.

EU is suffering from the same issues, so 45/6.47 = 7ish

Asia wont transfer because they only have 1 server for each rule set totalling 3, unless they merge into the EU or US servers in which case Asia would be 0.

so after ALL "Transfers" *cough mergers*

26 or 29 total servers from 171, depending on if they close Asia-Pacific or not.

All servers are listed at http://www.torstatus.net/

Click the North America, European, and Asia Links at the top to see ALL listed Servers.

There never should of been that many servers to begin with. GW2 actually has a good idea about the overflow servers. If BW didnt wanna raise the caps to start off, stealing the overflow idea would of taken care of the matter. Instead they launched 2 billion servers that werent close to being full. They all would get up to normal at night, but that just doesnt make for 24 hrs a day worth of folks.

Between that, and every way BW has found to shot themselves in the foot, I am still seeing the reduction as a good thing these days. There is a buzz in the air, and others around to actually see on planets again. I have never seen 200+ plus in the station...I did tonight.

I see no way they will ever get back all the PVP folks that bailed. What they can do is grow the PVE portion. Filling in on standard MMO items(group finder/interface etc), content, and folks to game with is the way you do that.

In this yr alone I have bought/will be buying ME3, Kingdoms of Amalur, NCAA CFB, and Madden that I know of. That is basically a third of my yearly new release purchases on average.

As long as EA continues to make games folks like, they will keep buying from them. For some reason folks just dont seem to get it.  You can hate their practices all you want, but when they produce good games, folks are gonna buy. As long as they keep money coming in, it puts them in position to take over smaller companies.

It really is no different than banks or any other businesses....the smaller ones are going to get gobbled up.

I have been playing mmorpg's for about 13 years, now I'm getting tired of those games, early this year I did decide to give 3 more games a change before I took a major brake from mmo's,those 3 games are GW2, EQ3 and one other that I dont know what it is yet.

Vile having had lots of fun in the past years playing mmo's this is changing for me now I'm not enjoing those games much anymore, offline games like Skyrim and Fallout keep me playing for longer houres than resent mmo's does.

What is the reason why the games dont get a grip on me anymore is probsbly I'm getting burnedout since the games must be getting better and better all the time with new technic and stuff,or maybe they are not getting any better  I dont know:-(

I left for SP games back around mid 06. I understand where you are coming from.

Without the follow up to the KOTOR series being in MMO form, I was done with them myself. More so for the fact you cant make a bathroom run when ya want, and if ya happen to fall asleep from a vico too many that day, you arent paying a price....or worse someone else on your account.

I do agree that SP games are a lot better time than MMOs for gameplay by itself. MMOs shine if ya have a few good friends. The trick is meeting folks with same mind sets these days, as back in 01(or before for some) most of us had a bit of a nerd side.

Side note....Dragons Dogma wasnt seeming like a bad SP game. I havent gotten very far, but it might be worth a rental for ya. Although I bought it, I would never recommend a purchase until actually playing thru a game.

To those who say I should be happy about server transfers: mine is still not on the list (the ebon hawk) and it is a ghost town. At this point there is no reason to keep paying a sub for a lonely game. Somehow my server is medium pop but on either side I never see more than 7 people on a planet or 40 peeps on fleet. Of those 40, 35 or more are busy cybering. Rerolling with my legacy level and toon levels is not worth it either. Giving them more time only benefits their wallets.

Cheers!

Dude, losing credibility by the second....

RP-PVE
Kath Hound --> The Ebon Hawk
Shien --> The Ebon Hawk
Sanctum of the Exalted --> The Ebon Hawk
Lord Adraas --> The Ebon Hawk
Rubat Crystal --> The Ebon Hawk

Well that was after they updated the list. Originally they did not have any rp servers listed. I am happy they finally realized that we needed peeps, but has nothing to do with my credibility since they were added afterwards... Thanks for the heads up tho! Cheers!

I hate it I hate I hate it.

Oh....we got hooked up.....that rocks dude.

I actually made some chars on Ebon Hawk today waiting for some of my characters to get moved. Server was at normal at 5PM EST, so I expect it will start filling out good as folks move over. Well for a RP server anyways....the servers not designated as RP have a lot more servers to help build numbers.

 Fuck that.

Some around here take any debate over a game as being negative. Including the person you quoted. I specifically remember when people were debating over population declines in TOR talking about server transfers or mergers being needed. His response? People were lying, hating, etc. Just to give one example.

Some around here treat any negative discussion relating to a game as "flaming it". Quite a few actually...

As for the OP. The vibe will remain the same. People love to debate and bitch. Regardless the games those two aspects aren't going to change.

This is so true. So many people make this emotional attachment to a game that they feel the need to defend it regardless if what is being said about the game is true or not. This is a forum. The purpose of a forum is to have a discussion. If you do not want to read anything that may differ from your point of view stop reading. It's that simple.

IMO.....There is always a place for constuctive criticism.

There is never a place where folks wanna be subjected to listening to others bitching. It is akin to a chinese water torture. Not just biching though....constant spam of it through out a forum of a game you actually have an interest in.

The next time you wanna feel good about yourself, remind me to come spam a game forum ya are playing to give ya a little taste.  After a couple of yrs of it, I bet you get the same attitude. What transpires around here is childish, and attempting to discount it is rather  sad.

We have the pub to take things up in. There is no need to disturb a live game forum, or one getting ready to launch. If you dont like a game, have your say, then STFU.

I realize that is my opinion, but I like to remember folks dont like the same things I do, and there is no reason for me to bother them in their respective gaming forums since they seem to be enjoying their game of choice. Pity so many others cant say the same.

The answer to the question is NO

It's not me that have to give up on MMOs, it's the developers that needs to wake up and start making MMORPGs, not Onlne RPGs or WoW clones.

Any MMO that doesn't require the help of other players to level up are not MMOs, they are just single player  games masked as MMORPGs.

MMORPGs (bar few exceptions) died in 2004

If what you want doesnt give them the income levels they demand, then why the hell should they make those type of games?

Folks around here act like they are owed.

Sitting around calling others ADD/carebear/PB Cruncher cause your chosen style doesnt have enough is about as childish as it gets IMO. Pick a game n enjoy....or dont. But quit blaming others for spending their money on what they want to.
