Originally posted by elvenangel So who are the customers to whom you sell your software and engines? Are they gamers or are they companies looking to build games? And when you listen to your customers, the users of your software engine, do you design it so they can turn around and based on what their marketing plan is, develope something to sell to the public? And do you think for one minute the buyers of you engine give a flying rats gentailia about what people want or do they, these users of your software, look at the demographics and find the one that will make the most money on the invesment they made in your software. Sorry, MMOs are not some grand art form, they are a way of making money. And companies go with what there marketing department, as well as other departments, tell them they will make the most money. I am not saying that developement companies dont pay attention to customers or the market. What I am saying is that in the end, everything said and done, they do what their numbers tell them will give them the biggest return. When a company does something that the public hates, that decision was based on what they percieve as being their best investment. Read what I am saying, companies don't care. They decide based on what will make money and if the public agrees great if not then they made a mistake and do something else, but they dont care. |

I work for a company associated with a software company and they don't scratch their collective ass until marketing tells them to. Player wants and needs? Companies dont give to shives about player wants and needs. They call it the MMO MARKET for a reason. Money is the bottom line and don't you think that if SOE, Blizzard, NCsoft, EA/Mythic, and everyone else thought that a Barbie MMO would sell that we would be swimming in them? Sure someone with a known name, like Richard Garriot, may come out and say "I have an idea" and then make the game they want, but even then look at TR? Do you think that TR is exactly what Richard wanted? Most devs are nameless hard working stiffs who do what they are told. Smaller independent dev teams maybe able to take there idea and run with it, but if this was truly successful why are there not just as many small indie titles as big name flops? How many of these indie titles flashed in the pan only to fizzle out if they got off the ground in the first place. |

Originally posted by devacore This is so true. MMORPG.com represents a small but vocal section of the MMO public. Add to the official forums and the other gaming sites you still are not catching everyone who plays. Then you take all the people who have an opinion and divide them into groups by wants and you have to look at the largest group. THEN you have to talk to the marketing department who totally ignore the players opinions and decide that a MMO based on puppies is what the public really needs (j/k) Really tho few games are made in a vaccum. You have the devs who answer to so many other people that what the public wants becomes a secondary concern. Companies run the numbers based on some formula and the wants of a small segment of the overall population get lost. Even if that segment posts alot. |

Doesn't matter whether it was released in it current state or a highly polished one. The situation would be the same, people would hate it, people would love it and in the end people would play it. It wouldn't kill WoW and some would hate it because SOE was involved. So in the end nothing would change. |

WoW is an MMO for the masses. As has been stated before people who would never have played a computer game or at least not an MMO play WoW. Grannys to banking executives to house wives to hardcore gamers play WoW. When WoW came out, and this is still pretty much the case, anyone could take an off the shelf machine from Walmart and get WoW to run. Hell I played it when it first came out because the other MMOs that were scheduled needed a much heavier machine and I couldn't afford to upgrade then. WoW is an enigma, an once in a lifetime event. Thus it is a mutation and its success will probably never be repeated on this scale. |

OMFG!!! Does stuff like this happen in EVE?!? The way the OP describes this situation EVE has gone from being a "game I have heard of" to one I really want to get into. The intrigue, the transporting, logistics, is what is being described a single incident or is this a major part of the game? I don't really like PVP but having fleet battles sounds awsome. Sorry I dont mean to hijack your thread but to me this sheds a whole new light on EVE. |

I tried DDO and it wasn't really my cup of tea. But having said that, the game is fun, entertaining and plays well. For those who play DDO, I can see why you do. |

I find the chat channels to be fairly active and helpful. But yeah I dont see many people but I know their there. This fits well with my style of play tho so I enjoy the big world with few people. At least you dont have to decline 10 or 20 duel requests every time you go to town like in WoW. |

Originally posted by Shoal As far as the grass growth I haven't noticed Doors still lag but no where near as bad and once you click on them you can run thru them More armor pieces are showing but not all Yes there is still a chunk where you seem to drop a little after lagging but I didn't have any crashes I noticed invisible hills above some rock so that you float over them. Also, you still porpoise when you swim with your head above water. Over all my experience coming back the last few days of my free return trial were much better then when I played before. I leveled to 10 bought a mount and actually enjoyed the game. There is a certain challenge to V:SoH and I dont mean from the lag and such. I didn't get into crafting but will if or when I reactivate my account. |

Because Gamma World was my first paper and pencil RPG and since then post holocaust has been my favorite. Also, you can only play Fallout 1 and 2 so many time before you wish you had someone live to talk to. |

Originally posted by markoraos I agree with this observation. To many MMOs do not have the longevity but place players in a race to the endgame. A true MMO should be setup so that the players never feel that there is an end game, there should always be something else to do. The only way to achieve this is to some how create a world where what the players do has more of a direct effect. I know it is difficult but really games need to be more dynamic, more player run. This is difficult because of balancing the game, new players versus older players, and there is always some prick whose only joy in life is breaking the balance, looking for exploits and griefing newbies. I do not envy devs the task. |

Originally posted by markoraos Good point. Compare Wolfenstien 3D or even Qauke's gameplay to say Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. The graphics have come a long way but so has the story these games have to tell. Also, look at Dune RTS compared to some thing newer, I really have played many newer RTSs but even something like Starcraft. The story and number of activities has come along way. Awsome graphics are great but if you find an older MMO more captivating, more fun then newer MMOs have missed the point. |

Unfortuneatly some games that may have been great games had very bad launches. Vanguard for example has some intresting game play but was very clunky, unstable from the start. The games is better now but to many people have a bad taste in their mouth so they won't go back. Companies only get one shot to launch and if you launch an unplayable game your pretty much sunk. It would seem that many companies have been in such a hurry to get the game out that they miss the basics in their attempt to make something new. Players are more savvy and the internet has made players more informed. This being said coming out with a game that is revoultionary is not safe. Coming out with a WoW clone is safe, at least from a marketing department stand point. What marketing departments fail to realize is that there is only one WoW and no one will recreate that kind of population. Hopefully games like AoC have learned a lesson, better to delay and release a stable game than to scre up the launch, but even here they have delayed twice so we shall have to see how people react when they do launch. |

I tried the official forums and there is not much info on making the game run better, opening ports in the firewall and router. Is there any where to find this info? |
