I am huge Traveller fan but I find it hard to believe that any company can create an MMO with the same depth and scope as Traveller.

I have to diagree. I dont think the MMO population would have "grown" if WOW was never developed.

Newly released MMOs sucks these days. Developers have grown steadily retarded and incomptetent. WoW gained an ammas following becuase of several factors.

1. already had a following with previous games

2. easy on the pc

3. easy overall to play

I honestly think those who made WOW their first mmo ever would have ever signed on.  MMO is a dying breed unless the developers gets smarter,

I disagree that the population of the MMO community would not have grown. Someone else would have made a MMO similar to WoW sooner or later.

Also, we have to look at the current batch of MMOs available and the effect WoW has had on their design. Since WoW cannot be taken out of the eqaution we don't know what games would be on the market now or the state of those that existed before WoW.

But in the end, everything said and done, we are speculating about a situation that does not exist. WoW was made, a lot of people play it, who really knows what the MMO market would be with out it.

I only wish I could play the game. DnL in its current state is unplayable.

I agree with Housam. The population of the MMO community would be greater now even if there was no WoW but it would not be on the same level.

WoW has a whole culture behind it, this culture has drawn in gamers for sure but also people who would never have played an MMO if there was no WoW.

We used to call EQ "EverCrack" but WoW makes "EverCrack" look more like baby asprin.

First AoC gets delayed like three times.

Then WAR.

And now TCoS.

I mean srsly?!?!

Is it some kind of marketing strategy?  Do they just like to make people disappointed?

I remain clueless...

I think we should find out what the developers want for birthday and then we give them their presents a half year later!! Mohahaha!!

I think it's because they want to appease fans, they want to build up momentum as well.

However, it doesn't server them. Adopting the "it will be done when it's done" and then when they could release it start a several month pr campaign in order to really work the hype THEN make the release, would probably be the best answer.

Because if any of these companies just said "when it's done" people wouldn't get their hopes up (and it does seem like little kids doesn't it?) and then become seriously dissapointed.

Especially since they don't know how to constructively deal with that dissapointement. Like Kids.

I agree with this. Instead of companies stating that they are going to make an MMO that will be everything to everyone, the perfect game for all styles, and then 4 years later with 6 missed launches and delays they turn out  a game with half the originaly promised content that runs like a dead pigeon on a stick.

What should happen is the game should be almost developed when closed beta starts with little or no hype until they have a good handle on what it is about, after a few months of this then companies should have an open beta and also announce what content will be because now they know what whether they can have full PVP or not, or whether the crafting system works, or if there will be housing, then launch for consumption by the general public.

I would rather a company tell me that the list of content is less than other games and deliver that content well than to promise me the moon and come out with game that is not as well put together as some games that heve been out for 5 or 6 years.

This is true. If your going to have an open world with open PvP then you have to take the good with the bad.

Now, the passage above was meant to point out the absolute paranoia that exists in government bodies today as there are much easier ways to pass secrets and much more secure ways than MMO's.  It is still however there and like a mountain attracts climbers just by being there so do MMO's attract the nut jobs in government for the same reason.  Governments aside we are also seeing developers and publishers regulating the web with segregated servers, IP blocks, CC blocks etc. in order to keep players within their own regions and this, although a different discussion altogether is just as bad, it's still censorship of the internet and that is bad for freedom everywhere.

I dont know about there being easier ways to pass information. While you can,t send documents (as far as I know) in an MMO, with the number of cyber cafes world wide, and the ability to steal accounts, sending a whisper to a foreign agent would be pretty easy.

To compare, back  then, before ET killed the gameing market and before nintendo revitilize it, there were plenty of games to be had, but most of them were cheeply made, and were only publish to make a quick buck. The same thing is happening here, hundreds of MMOs being pumped out, but yet not one of them have made any effort toward innovating the genre. Let us hope that Warhammer or AoC or Aion or something out there makes a good effort and puts out more then just killing pigs, wolves, or bears :p

I think you had better get used to being an ecological disaster on some game worlds fauna for a long time. The market is to stuck on the track created by WoW, until this formula stops paying off we will not see much in the way of innovation.

Theres no good games to play

Everything is boring

1 Month till AoC

how very emo

the market has never been bigger then it is right now, and it's only getting BIGGER as time goes on.  The current is bright, the future is even brighter.

Try back in 2002... when the there were like a dozen options instead of several dozen.

Wouldn't that be EMOMMORPG?

And thus a new internet term is born......

But this brings us back to those games without an item mall, how do they make money? I haven'ts seen much "in game advertisement". For example, when I tried Shadowbane a while back there was a computer ad when you first logged in but I think that was the only one. AO has in game ads but also some content that you must subscribe to play.

"Good times"? This kind of a system sounds absolutely hellish -- and only workable if you are married to your computer console and have no (real) life to attend to. Reading the "nostalgia" posts in this thread makes me much more appreciative for the way MMOs handle crafting now.

Why would you say you have no real life? Let say you play for 2 hours a day maybe 3 times a week and more on the weekend. During one of your 2 hour sessions you run around checking vendors, other times you grind or party, other times you just sit around and shoot the bull with friends. This would probably have no more or less effect on your real life then the people who spend hours raiding instances.

This is not everyones cup of tea but those who would like this in a game are just looking for something else then what in now in most MMOs.

If this is a provable condition then here in the US we can claim a disability and not have to work. Which of course will allow for more time to play while the goverment foots the bill.

Note: The above post is in no way meant to be a negative comment against people who are disabled or who recieve federal or state  funds for a disability of any type.

What you describe is probably what most players want, something to build community. - Actually, no, that's not what most player's want, which is why its not found in games much today.

Todays MMOs dont play into this, they are simple XP machines built to maximize leveling and restricting community to smaller clans or guilds. MMOs are now built on the model of "organized fun". Trade chat that goes to all the server and crafting based on auction houses, along with the item whoring  and tiered loot, have made buying face to face obsolete. - Fortunately.

OK, I'll be the dark cloud in this thread.  I've been playing MMO's for a reasonable amount of time, and my early games were Lineage 1/2, Shadowbane and DAOC.

In most of them, they didn't have auction houses, wares had to be sold by shouting in a trade channel (or global) and you had to chase all around looking for a crafter at times.

Also, in many games, you needed to craft to really make a decent living, as adventuring just didn't return the same payout, so I felt "compelled" to craft, even though I despised it.

All of this added up to one thing for me.  It took me away from the activities I enjoyed doing, exploring, killing mobs, killing other players and gathering materials.

I always used to wish that there was a way to get gear in an auction house, and when I first ran into it in WOW I felt it was the most brilliant thing ever. (yes, I know they weren't first with the concept)

At last, I was no longer had to stand around trying to buy and sell wares (in fact, I turn off trade channels today), nor do I feel compelled to craft (love that about EVE), and in fact, I didn't have to waste a minute on activities that I didn't want to do.

And you know what?  There's lots more folks like me than the people waxing nostalgic in this thread, hence you get today's games, with crafting a shadow of its former self.

I suppose there's a market for a game that has heavy crafting, but until more players prefer it to adventure, its going to be relegate to a minor role.

To each his or her own.

I never crafted in AC. You could make make a megapyreal in a little over an hour of grinding and selling the loot to vendors.

My problem with many games out today is that they become so gear oriented because there is such a race to level that people have gotten away from stopping and smelling the roses. Why would you play a game with thousands of other people if there is no reason to interact with them exept to be come the top raiding guild on the server?

MMOs have become so convienent, the challenge has been wrung out of them. I understand that not everyone wants to have to spend time doing things they don't want to but companies have moved in a totally opposite direction. Now people that would like a game that has more obstacles and more community are being left out in the cold. It has nothing to do with nostalgia and every thing to do with play style.

So before you state that the games to day are better for what ever reason and that the way things used to be are not as good, try to consider that certain people aren't  missing "the good old days" some people just miss a certain style of game.

What you describe is probably what most players want, something to build community.

I remember in AC there was one town that everyone went to to trade. You would basically stand there and shout your wears. So many people would be there that you would be ported out from time to time because AC had a system that if to many people were in one spot people got teleported out side the mob. After Turbine created a shopping mall where you could set up a bot to sell your wears in a well organized way the community died a bit and that city, wish I could remember the name, only saw the occasional passing adventurer come thru.
