I don't know how it is over in the UK, but in the US shops, I notice that there's not many gamers that come into places like GameStop - it's more the friends / parents / grandparents of gamers that want to get a gift.

It's pretty common for an employee to ask 'Are you looking for anything?' and hearing in response, 'Not really.  Could you tell me what's good?'

Digital distribution is just so convenient.

Digital distro is convenient. Especially when you bought most of your games from Direct2Drive who are now Gamefly. Did I mention that all the games I purchased last year (Borderlands GOTY, DC Online, Rift) have become unavailable since the changover despite their CS assuring me that my games will appear "in due time"? Sorry the covenience has been destroyed by the realization that I am totally dependent on Gamefly getting their act together, which seems increasingly unlikely. Boxes only for me in the future.

But then a single player game that you bought the box for such as football manager2012 has to be pqlayed through steam so if something goes wrong there you have the box but still cannot play.

Which is why I've avoided them as well. This issue isn't wether I can play the game without a net connection. The issue is I can't even install it unless I feel like going out and buying another copy of the game. The 2 MMOs I'll give a pass to as I can get the client from their respective websites. With Bordelands and its 4 DLCs I'm screwed.

This is exactly my issue with digital as well. Having digital downloads as an option is fine and dandy, But when I buy a boxed singleplayer game, Put in the disk and it says I have to log in to steam and use steam to download the game, I'm left wondering "What the hell is on the disk then?"  I buy retail copies of my games because I like to actually own them. I feel like I am just renting the game until the company no longer supports it or shuts down their network. It is a given risk with digital downloads, But with physical retail disks it is preposterous. Put the damn game on the disk! Sheesh.

Screw digital.

I like having the freedom to get some of my money back (even if its a store credit) when a game turns out to be crap, or is over and done with after 3 hours of playtime.

I say if developers/publishers don't want people to trade in or resell their games, they should make games that people actually want to keep instead of pretty, but short-lived trash games.

It also means the end of taking your games to a friend's house to enjoy together. Its bad enough that you can't play multiplayer games in the same room as another person anymore. Social ineptitude is on the rise

+1 Well said.

picked up this in  the UK ,lot of jobs going http://uk.news.yahoo.com/10-000-game-workers-may-lose-job-122313224.html

That is the saddest part of this news, The fact that 10,000 folks may be out of jobs. I wish them all well from across the pond.

The wonder and the freshness of the then-new concept. Oops, That was two!

I didn't even know this game was revived till recently. I used to play it back in High School, and I must say it is like getting in a time machine.  I feel like a teenager again! :)

Simple question really. How similar is The 4th Coming to Ultima Online and what are the differences? Also is The 4th Saga the same game but just a different server? As an ex UO player this game looks very interesting from what I've seen in vids. Thank you all for your time. :)

gw2, biggest letdown of the decade. get a beta key, you will see lol. ill take tera anyday and if you have read the changes that will be in the live version you will see this game is fully headed into the right direction.

But....But what if I end up liking both? Will my head explode?

Correction: I'm sure they want to avoid anything that has to do with NOT making cash.

Actually this here is a really good point.  Now that gaming is no longer a kids only endeavor (not that it ever was entirely, but moreso now than ever) since many kids from the 80's and 90's still play as adults, we have the situation of making a game intellectually stimulating for both youngish kids, older kids, young adults, and older adults.  Very hard to please all of them.  And very hard to make it intellectually stimulating for all of them.

Actually in the 1980s/90s *pc* gaming was close to an adults only environment, since very few young kids had access to a suitable pc in the first place, as they were very expensive. And further, since it was pretty tricky to configure a pc to run games at all, due to memory limitations, most players were techies of one sort or another. That's why a lot of older gamers have a background in programming and other IT related skills.

Great point Roqoco! I happen to be one of those "old-school" pc gamers myself and am an IT. In the beginning MMO's certainly were for enthusiasts mostly and not as much handholding was going on as we see in many titles today. I agree with Gainesvilleg as well on the point that it is a difficult and sometimes near impossible challenge to appeal to all types and demographics equally in an MMO, And is also why I think it is a waste of time to attempt universal appeal. In my opinion, Devs and Pubs should pick their audience or audiences and not try to tailor everything in their game to every kind of player. But of course, This is just my opinion.

Now that I got that previous post off my chest, I am going to say something that may be unexpected. Or maybe not. I kind of agree with the OP and I also kind of agree with the opinions of StoneRose as well. I think that between these two schools of thought, i.e. "New" and "Old" schools, There lies some sort of middleground. Perhaps the next blockbuster MMO will be one that takes the fundamentals and tried-and-true elements of the old school, and mixes it with new school elements that have come about since the release of WOW. It is always good to make progress for certain, But devs should not throw away or forget what has worked in the past. The genre has evolved this is for sure, and we should embrace new elements and  mechanics when they improve the genre, and reject them when they detract from the experience. But we should all the while remember where we came from and never forget the elements that forged this genre and made people want to go exploring with their friends in the first place.

You're to good and PRO to play with the rest of us.

It's really sad to see such short sightedness and ignorance from a 35 year old.

Another skiimer only reading what you want to read and missing the whole picture. Look at me, I can do that too click on one page and nothing else.

Assume much? I have been here a long time and read many posts such as this...as well as seen  your postings. Most of which are like the one you put here.

COMMON sense is what keeps me from wasting money on the hamster wheel garbage out these days and keeps me hoping for one that actually incorporates the things the OP mentioned. I vote with my wallet.

Would also tell you that how you and I choose to engage in these game will be a very different expiance than the next guy sitting next to us. OPs post doesn't speak for everyone and doesnt't anwser for what we think would be wrong with the gener.

The OP never claimed to speak for everyone, the title includes "why this gamer" and is littered with "I thinks".

Yeah, I am scratching my head as to why Stone thinks the OP is attempting to speak for all of humanity. It is clearly an opinion piece and never once does it seem like he is attempting to assert his opinion as fact. Hey Captain Obvious, I think everyone is aware that experiences and opinions are different from person to person. Did that really need pointing out? I am really sick of rude people trying to derail a thread started by a unoffensive post by a person who is attempting to put forth their opinion in a rational manner. I am not saying that people can't or shouldn't disagree, But if people do disagree it would be nice if they just explained why they disagree and actually contribute to the conversation/debate instead of posting insulting or sarcastic one-liners and/or juvenile memes. Is this too much to ask for?

Unless you bought the game boxed or on steam all you can download is the trial. If you are trying to download the trial it's up there. But I would just wait a couple days when it goes free to play. I think the 11th or 12th is the day EQ f2p is supposed to launch.

http://www.everquest.com/free/

I cannot speak for WAR or Mortal Online because I have not played them, But the rest of the titles on this list are doing just fine with decent to good player bases. What it really comes down to is what style of MMO you wish to play.

The new screenshots look very nice. Wonder if it will actually be implemented (finally) this year.
