From lvl 1-12, you move only with mouse. But....after GC1 or lvl 13, you get to learn lightfoot and only need to hit 'alt' to travel long/short distance. So for the most part, you move with the 'alt' key, better than WASD imo. |

Maybe you need to lvl up some more, or go to Hefei to see if a quest is available there. This game has, "on average", one quest per lvl, so if you don't see any quest, it probably means you haven't leveled up enough. Yeah, leveling in 9D past FD is a real chore. What keeps me going though, is most 9D's quests ultimately lead to some sweet rewards, like a ring with +2 to all attributes or some hat with +80 attk rating, things like that. That and the fact that 9D is the only MMO letting me play a fist fighter wearing a cool oriental coolie hat, are two reasons keeping me in this game. |

Voyage Century is a nice game, having much, much more to do than 9D's boring monster bashing. But there are several things 9D does better than VC (and most other f2p games): 1. Less pot spamming. In VC, potions are cheap so it's whoever owns most potions (and item mall stuff) wins in pvp. This is much less an issue in 9D as ginseng is a rare drop and normally available only through events/quests. 2. In 9D you can't tell someone's level by the clothes he/she wears. In VC, your armor and ship's icon betrays your level. 3. Balance issues: some items sold in VC's item shop are just too overpowering. Also in sea battle, you always start the fight with same position (i.e. head toward each other), giving players less time/space to maneuver so one with battleship has a huge advantage as its large number of cannons can one/two hit and sink anyone else. So as far as balance goes, 9D's warrior vs hybrid vs nuker system just seems better. 4. Money sink. Like many f2p games (Heroes, Rappelz etc.) VC is probably going to have serious inflation issue as time goes by with extra gold accumulating, whereas 9D players have less to worry because hefty weapon repair/refinery cost provides a great sink for extra gold.
But I do like VC's game structure, which is much harder for potential botters to take advantage of than 9D's brain-dead monster killing, not to mention VC's great crafting options and player-based economy. So both games have their good and bad points, and both being similar grindfest games with emphasis on skill grind, it just comes down to which subject matter one enjoys more. |

Asian Games vs. "Western" Games (Poll)
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 2/04/07 10:09:37 PM
I feel differently. In terms of innovation, western mmo's are definitely ahead of asian mmo's. But asian mmo's do take the existing ideas/features and make them more polished. It also has to do with their business models, the purchase+subscription model allows for some risk taking, free+item shop model doesn't.

Originally posted by Astropuyo Only the beginning was like that. Now I have a lvl 43 hybrid that can only take on one yellow creature at a time. Later maps I heard are pretty difficult to solo. As for pvp, they need to do a bit of work to balance out all classes. Yeah, skill grind is one big problem, it actually discourages ppl from grouping, because you don't want to lvl up in a party with skill lvls lagging behind. This game is only half finished, right now it's hard to tell how it'll be like when released in full. I too hope that its pvp system is worth all the grinding we put up with. |

Between silkroad and guild wars, I'll take silkroad's persistent world, historical flavor, and triangular caravan system and mesh them with guild wars' skills and character builds/customerization to make a perfect mmorpg. I feel between these two games, one's strength is exactly the other's weakness. |

After playing this hidden gem for a month, this is what i feel:
Pros: - Free, for folks who see MMO companies as crooks, free MMO's with item malls are lesser of two evils. - First MMO focusing on martial arts (no, SRO & Heroes are only asian themed, this one IS about martial art fantasy) - No heavy armor/shield/paladins, again it faithfully adheres to martial art theme, so none of those. - Great animation and moves. Smooth graphics with minimal lag except in town/village. - Lightfoot instead of mount, so another plus for sticking to martial arts fantasy theme. - No uber must-have skills in this game. You pick skills with best looking moves. - 4 classes in each clan, and each clan has several sets of clothes/make-up, so toons don't look alike. - A nice break from all generic Sci-fi or eurocentric medieval fantasy MMO's out there. - Skill level separate from character level, so higher lvl players don't always beat you. - Nice quests with useful item rewards; good story/lore with role-playing potential if pvp is done right. - Nice variety of crafting, item collecting options. Dungeon in each map for additional player challenge.
Cons: - Free, so there's a potential for botters and gold farmers to catch on, so far it's pretty clean. - Leveling at high lvl can be really slow. ( = an invisible level cap) - Skill level grinding (this can be a plus, as real-life martial art learning is all about practice/grind.) - Quests reward too few xp. - Still in beta, many features and some clans are yet to be implemented.
Overall, this one has a lot of potentials if endgame content and pvp are done right. If Indy 21 folks are smart to provide us maps allowing open clash between white & black clans, and add in another layer of pvp like allowing anyone to join either rebellion or imperial government's force, I can see myself playing this game for a long time.
Bottom line is, if you don't know anything or don't care about asian martial arts, it may be a hit or miss for you. But if you are interested, definitely check this baby out since it's free. Don't buy into negative stereotype spread by a few with possible industry agenda behind them. As a consumer you owe yourself the right to try every game, free or otherwise. |

No one needs your pity, Poornstar, it's you who needs pity from all ppl who enjoy playing free MMO's, because they're having fun, and you obviously aren't. Go back to waste your time in grinding for those epic gears, that is, until they are made obsolete by WoW's next expansion. 9 Dragons is still in beta. Yes, it's a grindfest, but players in 9D would rather grind as a shaolin monk or a Wu Tang swordman than a stupid orc/elf/dwarf. Btw, go learn something about Jin Yong. His history-based martial art stories are as much an icon in chinese pop culture as rock'n roll in the west. Whether it tanks in the west or not, 9D is the only MMO's out there that shows some attention to authentic chinese martial arts, which alone justifies its creation. With more content and pvp added, and continue its no-subscription model, it will be a hit in asia. So what if a game is a grindfest, as long as enough people can extract fun out of playing it, it's a good game. No one has the right to tell others how they should play or enjoy their games, least of all someone who drifts from game to game. |
